February 18th, 11 am: As reported by The News, the death toll has now increased to 8 as more individuals complained about breathing problems and tightness in the chest later in the day on Monday. Many were shifted to the hospital again.

Authorities fear the number might escalate with less information about the gas but it could most likely be “Hydrogen Sulphide, a highly poisonous gas that is a byproduct of crude oil and also generates in the sewerage system.”

February 17th: According to ARY News, at least 4 people are pronounced dead in Karachi’s Kemari area due to a mysterious gas. Authorities fear the number might escalate with less information about the gas.

“Shocked to hear about the loss of life due to poisonous gases in Kemari. Although the incident is not in the port, KPT officials have been dispatched to investigate the root cause. I request everyone to refrain from making any comments on the media till we have the facts on hand.” says, Ali Haider Zaidi on twitter.

Zaidi warns to not make false comments on media unless the authorities have figured out facts and figures. Reportedly, no poisonous gas was traced near the port.

This is a developing story.

AI Decoded – Accountants And Policy Makers Can Benefit From Ongoing Work To Make AI Easier To Interrogate

Put the user at the core, asserts new report from ACCA, as it reveals 51% of practitioners are unaware of explainable AI

Explainable AI (XAI) emphasises not just how algorithms provide an output, but also how they work with the user, and how the output or conclusion is reached. XAI approaches shine a light on the algorithm’s inner workings to show the factors that influenced its output. The idea is for this information to be available in a human-readable way, rather than being hidden within code.

ACCA’s (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) latest report Explainable AI addresses explainability from the perspective of practitioners, i.e. accountancy and finance professionals. Head of Business Insights, Narayanan Vaidyanathan, said: ‘It is in the public interest to improve understanding of XAI, which helps to balance the protection of the consumer with innovation in the marketplace.’

Complexity, speed and volume of AI decision-making often obscure what is going on in the background (the black box), which makes the model difficult to interrogate. Explainability, or the lack of this, affects the ability of professional accountants to understand and display scepticism.  In a recent ACCA survey, more than double, 54%, agreed with this statement compared to those who didn’t.

Vaidyanathan continued: ‘It’s an area that’s relevant to being able to trust technology and to be confident that it’s used ethically and XAI can help in this scenario.  It’s helpful to think of it as a design principle as much as a set of tools.  Moreover, this is AI decoded, and designed to augment the human ability to understand and interrogate the results returned by the model.’

Key messages for practitioners:

  • Maintain awareness of evolving trends in AI: 51% of respondents were unaware of XAI. This impairs the ability to engage. The report sets out some of the key developments in this emerging area to help raise awareness.
  • Beware of oversimplified narratives: In accountancy, AI isn’t fully autonomous, but nor is it a complete fantasy. The middle path of augmenting, as opposed to replacing, the human works best when the human understands what the AI is doing; which needs explainability.
  • Embed explainability into enterprise adoption: Consider the level of explainability needed, and how it can help with model performance, ethical use and legal compliance.

Policy makers, for instance in government or at regulators, frequently hear the developer/supplier perspective from the AI industry. This report can complement that with a view from the user/demand side, so that policy can incorporate consumer needs.

The report’s key messages for policy makers are:

  • Explainability empowers consumers and regulators: improved explainability reduces the deep asymmetry between experts who understand AI and the wider public. And for regulators, it can help reduce systemic risk if there is a better understanding of factors influencing algorithms that are being increasingly deployed across the marketplace.
  • Emphasise explainability as a design principle: An environment that balances innovation and regulation can be achieved by supporting industry to continue, indeed redouble, its efforts to include explainability as a core feature in product development.

Narayanan Vaidyanathan added: ‘XAI can be polarising, with some having unrealistic expectations for it to be like magic and answer all questions. While others are deeply suspicious of what the algorithm is doing in the background. XAI seeks to bridge this gap, by improving understanding to manage unrealistic expectations, and to give a level of comfort and clarity to the doubters.’

Petition Filed in Lahore High Court to Ban ‘Ehd-e-Wafa’

Ehd-e-Wafa

On Monday, a man filed a case against popular drama series ‘Ehd-e-Wafa’ in the Lahore High Court (LHC) for the negative portrayal of media personnel and politicians.

The petitioner has been identified as Muhammad Zeeshan. In his petition to the court, he highlighted that the show which is currently being on aired has missed out the judiciary but focused on politicians, media anchors, bureaucrats, and army officials.

The petition read, as quoted on Samaa TV’s website, “four pillars of the state were displayed but the role of the army was shown instead of the judiciary”.

As per his opinion, the drama, first aired on HUM TV on September 22, is portraying a negative image of Pakistan internationally which ruins the reputation of authorities. The show must not continue to appear on local tv.

Ehd-e-Wafa

What is surprising is that the court has apparently taken up the case.

It has not been long since ‘Mere Pass Tum Ho’ had experienced similar fate. A lawyer had filed a case earlier in the court asking for a public apology from the makers of the drama serial for portraying negative role of women in our society.

The cast of the drama serial, on-air on Hum tv currently includes Osman Khalid Butt as an established politician, Wahaj Ali as a successful journalist, Ahmed Ali Akbar as an assistant commissioner and Ahad Raza Mir an army officer.

The show is being produced under the banner of ISPR and Momina Duraid Productions, directed by Saife Hassan, and is written by a promising writer Mustafa Afridi.

Karachiites, You Can Finally Have A Blast At The New ‘Friends’ Themed Cafe!

It’s no mystery that Friends is one of the best shows that has ever graced our TV sets ever but if you don’t agree, you can leave now, kthanksbye.

It’s one of our wildest wishes to get to live in the Friends version of New York City, drink coffee in Central Perk and hang out on the orange couch with six of our closest friends: Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler and Joey.

And now, our dream is finally becoming our reality!

Well, almost. We can’t really chill with Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler and Joey since they’re fictional characters. (Don’t you hate it when that happens?) But we can go to a Friends themes restaurant in Karachi!

Giphy

The restaurant is located at Allama Iqbal Road, PECHS, Block 2. It’s opposite Red Apple and the restaurant serves fast food plus selected Italian dishes.

Here’s the opening of the cafe which looks like a place that can go up on your Instagram feed.

These posters are not a bad attempt to brighten up the place.

Check out those orange seats which from the looks of it seems pretty cozy!

Friends ended in 2004, but the huge popularity of the show seems in no rush to go anywhere anytime soon.

While the café is new and an exciting venture, we wish it proceeds to take more inspiration from the sitcom and lives up to fans’ expectations. You can go enjoy the food and ambiance from 4 pm – 12 pm.

So, when are you guys heading out to enjoy your cup of coffee?

Jemima Goldsmith Wittily Responds To A Tweet That Made Fun Of Imran Khan & His Wives

Imran Khan and Jemima Goldsmith was the most-sought couple in Pakistan; several fans wished for them to come back together following Imran Khan’s nullification of a second marriage with Reham Khan.

There’s no surprise that Jemima has a knack with words and is always standing in support of her former husband.

Recently, Goldsmith took Twitter to prove that she can certainly take a joke even if it included her. The post included her, Imran Khan and his current wife Bushra Maneka.

She tweeted ”who doesn’t love a Lollywood poster? Spotted today by a friend in Lahore…

Caption: “What kind of black magic did you do?”

She then further added, ”Ps. No disrespect intended. Like most of you, I just found it funny. (Plus im a genuine fan of Pakistani film posters, street art & truck art.)”

Her fans really appreciated her sense of wit and how secure she us as an individual.

Jemima Goldsmith and Prime Minister Imran khan got married in back 1995. The marriage lasted nine years and they both decided to split in 2004.

Like any mature couple, Jemima and PM Khan still stay in touch. Jemima is seen supporting her ex-husband in all his political campaigns on social media, but the couple has moved on!

Goldsmith has been in and out of two different relationships after the split. Khan’s marriage to Reham Khan and Bushra Maneka also confirms that the couple has moved on, but it seems like the Pakistanis are still stuck in the past.

It is still unsettling when people bring up the old relationships, expecting that the couple might still have a chance.

What do you think about this these two?

Coronavirus: Apple Warns Shortage of IPhones

iphone 11 Pro Max

The Coronavirus is taking a huge toll on companies based in China. Apple happens to be one of them and due to the outbreak, Apple will no longer be able to meet its quarterly earnings target.

One of the other reasons that Apple will most likely not meet its target is because of the drop in demand in China following the diminishing production capacity inside the country.

China happens to be one of the primary locations where devices such as iPhones are assembled. Since the factories will be working after a delay, there will be a shortage of iPhones throughout the globe.

Expected revenue announced by Apple’s chief executive, Tim Cook earlier in the month of January was around $63bn and $67bn, according to The Independent.

iPhone

Officials from the California based company made a statement saying, “Our quarterly guidance issued on January 28, 2020, reflected the best information available at the time as well as our best estimates about the pace of return to work following the end of the extended Chinese New Year holiday on February 10.”

“Work is starting to resume around the country, but we are experiencing a slower return to normal conditions than we had anticipated. As a result, we do not expect to meet the revenue guidance we provided for the March quarter.”

“All of our stores in China and many of our partner stores have been closed. Additionally, stores that are open have been operating at reduced hours and with very low customer traffic. We are gradually reopening our retail stores and will continue to do so as steadily and safely as we can.”

How The Toxic Gas Leak In Karachi Is Affecting The Lives Of People

Dawn

On Monday, 17th February 2020, Karachi was shaken by the new of toxic gas leak at Keamari Port that has severely affected the lives of many killing 8 people and injuring dozens of people. As of yesterday, the authorities had feared the number might escalate and it did.

Station House Officer, Malik Adil Khan says that the victims are facing serious respiratory problems. He said, “We are obtaining details of the incident and at this stage, nothing could be shared.” Whereas on the other hand, Chairman Karachi Port Trust (KPT) Rear Admiral Jamil Akhtar on refuted claims that the gas leak occurred at the port or whether from a ship.

However, the cause for the gas leak still remains unknown but it is highly affecting the lives of people in Karachi. Here’s how:

1. Port activities suspended due to the killer gas

All port activities have been suspended and Custom House Karachi was evacuated on Monday morning. According to sources, the Custom House was closed and evacuated at around 10AM after an Assistant Collector and several others started feeling extremely sick.

Later, three more people at Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT) experienced similar conditions and the terminal was closed at around 11AM. Operations at Pakistan International Container Terminal (PICT), SAPT, Pak Shaheen terminals were closed at mid-day.

2. Karachi Boat Club announced

AhsanIqbal.com

As a precautionary measure, Karachi Boat Club (KBC) management decided to close the club from Monday 5PM until Tuesday morning. They also requested members not to visit the club while it’s closed.

3. Schools are closing down to ensure safety of the students

change.org

Several schools situated in the areas of Clifton and Defence have announced to close down  to ensure the safety of students. However, some parents have also stopped sending their children to school.

Later on Monday, an FIR was also has registered in Jackson Police Station under the supervision of SHO Malik Adil. As per the complaint, the poisonous gas affected people at 6 PM on Monday at Masan Road, Railway Colony, Jackson Bazaar and surrounding areas.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Ali Haider Zaidi decided to take a tour of the port and as per him, he didn’t come across anything unusual.

People are shaken and still looking for answers!

No one has heard anything from the Sindh government regarding this gas leak

No actions taken

Moreover, an official stated that last night, doctors at the hospital predicted that the gas was ‘hydrogen sulphide’ which is generated in sewage lines. But apparently, on Tuesday morning, it turned out that it belonged to the family of methylene.

What’s disappointing is that an official said that Pakistan has no instrument or tools to detect and identify the gas in the air. However, we would request people in Karachi to take extra care of themselves.

This is a developing story.

The official realme Facebook in the country outlines some of the key specs of the phone and “triple camera” is one of them. The Realme C3 is set to arrive in two configuration variants: 3GB RAM with 32GB storage and 4GB RAM with 64GB storage along with the presence of Helio G70 chipset inside. The smartphone is housed with 5,000mAh battery capacity.

Zainab Alert Response and Recovery Act Approved for Nation-Wide Implementation

Zainab Alert Response and Recovery Act

The Zainab Alert Response and Recovery Act (ZARRA) is a much-needed bill and a long-awaited beginning.

On Monday, the Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights on Monday unanimously approved an amendment in the Zainab Alert Bill, this gives the proposed legislation permission to be implemented throughout Pakistan.

However, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Quratul Ain Marri is not in favor of it as she stresses it violates the 18th Amendment that empowered provinces to legislate on the matter.

On the other hand, Senator Khokar said the Zainab Alert Bill would be made more effective in curbing the increasing cases of child rape and murder in the country.

During the previous two meetings, the functional committee along with the ministry and concerned authorities conducted a detailed review and compiled various suggestions.

The government and the law ministry have approved those suggestions. The existing errors in the bill would be removed to make it more effective. -Senator Khokar

Khokar added:

After a child goes missing, it takes a lot of time to lodge an FIR and the policemen don’t even know under which section to file it.

The first few hours after the child is kidnapped are very important. Delay in the FIR proves beneficial for the culprits and detrimental for the family members.

Moreover, Senator Dr. Meher Taj Roghani suggested adding punishments and fines to the bill for “improving the policemen’s behavior”.

In a mutual agreement, it was also decided that the police should be bound to file an FIR as soon as they receive a report of a missing child and present a challan within 14 days. They will also be liable to keep the missing child’s parent(s) informed about the status.

Failure to register an FIR immediately would lead to a possible prison sentence for up to two years, in addition to a fine of Rs50,000 to Rs100,000. The concerned police officer can also be fired, the panel declared.

It is important to add here that the National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights has added the death penalty as the maximum sentence while 10 years imprisonment was the minimum.

Shan Foods Wants Pakistanis to Know that Women are More than Just Great Cooks!

Shan

Christina Koch- the first woman to spend record-breaking 328 days in space, Aqsa Ajmal the first Pakistani to get selected among Lexus Design Award finalists for 2020 and Nayyab Ali – first transgender Pakistani to register a company, are amongst the many women who have accomplished major achievements in 2020.

Unfortunately, the potential that women can achieve is still not seen by many who limit their roles.

When it comes to women in Pakistan, despite us living in the 21st century where women have made advances in their careers, their real worth is judged by their prowess in the kitchen. Somehow the ability to make the ‘gol roti’ always makes its way into the conversation.

No matter how successful a woman is, no matter how many awards and certifications and recognitions she has under her belt, she still gets judged on the circumference of the roti.

shan

The softness of the bread will determine if she has what it takes to be a good wife and a great mother. Women walk into a battlefield with society and identity crisis almost every single day!

However, realizing how these skilled women are haunted by comments like “tum kerti hi kya ho”, one brand has decided to end this debacle once and for all.

Shan Foods, with its world-famous Recipe Mixes has simplified the lives of women in the kitchen by offering real traditional authentic taste with consistency and convenience for decades.

It has become a helping hand to these achievers in the kitchen by aiding in the process. What matters, even more, is that Shan Foods has broken massive stereotyping and is fighting the mindset that a kitchen is a woman’s only place.

shan

Not only has it proved to be an ally for women, but men as well. Shan Foods has broken shackles and has created ripples talking about how men can also cook and lend a hand at home with their recipe mixes.

In this day and era, in order to strive and emerge, we need to tear down the walls and leap over boundaries that have restricted us for too long, including gender bias-ness.

It is time to accept that women can be lawyers, CEOs, entrepreneurs, men can cook, clean, take care of children and do the laundry. Together, with the help and support of one another, they make 4-walls into a home and are life partners in terms of companionship, parenting and also financial support.

Kudos to Shan for coming forward as a brand and supporting the idea that a woman’s place is not just in the kitchen and that she should be celebrated for not just being a great cook but much more.

200 US firms Aim to Move Production Base from China to India

China and India

Around 200 US firms are seeking to move their manufacturing base to India from China after the general elections took place, reports Business Standard.

The President of US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum’s (USISPF), Mukesh Aghi stated that the US firms have been in conversation with them regarding their options in India.

In an interview, Aghi revealed, “I think that’s critical. We would advise to bring more transparency in the process and to make it more consultative because in the last 12 to 18 months, we are seeing US companies look at some of the decisions being made, either e-commerce or data localization, as more domestic-oriented than global.”

Aghi also believes that in order to attract investment, the new Indian government needs to be transparent and accelerate reforms.

Mukesh Aghi

He added, “We need to understand how we can attract those companies. And that means all the way from land issues to customs issues to being part of the global supply chain. Those are critical issues. There are a whole plethora of reforms that need to go further down, and I think that is also going to create a lot of jobs.”

He explained the long term advantages of investment in creating jobs in India. He also suggested that it is time for India to think of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the US.

“I think if India is concerned about cheap goods coming from China, an FTA will eliminate that need. You can put barriers to Chinese goods and still have the U.S. providing access to the Indian market and Indian companies having more access to the US market, and issues like GSP would diminish,” he said.

The document will be prepared as soon as the elections are over.

90,000 Pakistanis Get Overseas jobs in first 40 days of 2020

Job

Around 90,000 Pakistani’s overseas have been facilitated by The Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development with jobs in multiple fields of the international labor market in the first 40 days of 2020.

A senior officer in the Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment (BEOE) said, “This is a good start for ‘2020’ and it seems that we will accomplish the target of 750,000 set for the current year.”

He further added, “The foreign remittances, sent by Pakistani expatriates, were a potential source of boosting the country’s forex reserve (FER).”

The foreign remittances had reached $11.4 billion during the first half of 2019 – 2020 as per the Citing the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) quoted by the officer.

However, he anticipates that for the current financial year, the government might as well reach the target of $24 billion.

The government had planned extensively to create a legal channel for Pakistani expatriates to send money to their homes which will eventually boost the flow of foreign remittances with in the country.

The government plans to launch the initiative as soon as possible preferably before the holy month of Ramazan because remittances from Pakistani expatriates flow heavily on  Eid-ul-Fitr.

Under the initiative, a card will be issued to the emigrants which will provide them with multiple incentives such as permission to bring in two mobile phones, allowance of the extra quantity of luggage, and concession on air tickets.

WhatsApp’s ‘Delete for Everyone’: 7 Things You Should Know Before Using this Feature!

Delete for Everyone

WhatsApp users rejoiced when the ‘Delete for Everyone’ feature was first announced.

This feature allows you to delete any message which may want to take back in the group and private chats.

No doubt, this is one of the most-wanted and very useful features the social media platform has.

However, there is more to it than meets the eyes. There are still many things WhatsApp users need to know about this beloved feature!

Here are 7 must-knows of the Delete for Everyone feature:

1. Sender and Recipient Must be Using the Latest Version of WhatsApp

Often, people forget to update their applications. Now where there are many benefits of updates, there are also some downsides. But in this case, both users must be using the latest WhatsApp version in order to be successful in using the feature.

2. iPhone Users May Still Have Images/Videos Saved in Device After Message Has Been Deleted!

Call it a fluke, but iPhone users may want to take extra precaution while sending material on WhatsApp as even though the message may be deleted, pictures and videos are likely to stay.

3. Photos/Videos are Deleted from Gallery and Chat for Android Users

The Delete for Everyone feature works sightly different for Andoird users. The content saved to the gallery is deleted when the message is erased from the chat.

4. There is a Loop-Hole!

Well, it’s really sad this one but recipients can see your messages before you realize what you have sent. Despite them viewing the message, it can be deleted, but it’d probably be too late by then.

5. You are Not Notified if Message was NOT Deleted Successfully

Another downside to this feature is that you will never be notified if this feature was unsuccessful.

6. The Recipient Gets Alerted When you Delete Something

The person on the other end will always know what you did and may haunt you for it!

7. You only have 1 Hour to Delete the Message(s) Before its too Late!

Senders will only get 1-hour to realize and fix their mistake(s).

Happy WhatsApping!

Solis Festival Islamabad, Shut Down Midway After Being Vandalized by Crashers

Solis Festival

On February 15, crashers vandalized Solis Music and Arts Festival in  Islamabad.

The fourth edition of the EDM festival, Solis was shut down around 9:30 instead of 12:00 when crashers trashed the place and injured 100’s in the process.

It took quite some time for the music scene to return back to Pakistan after security concerns were resolved as international DJs made their way back to participate at the events.

The organizers of the event received heavy criticism on social media. They took it to their official Instagram account to express their concern regarding the mishap:

For the 4th edition of Solis Festival, we were really excited to bring the festival back to home grounds- Islamabad. We had to make the difficult decision to stop the event due to hundreds of individuals who fought their way through with fake tickets. This spoiled the night for everyone else that purchased authorized tickets. As always, security and safety is at the utmost priority for our festival attendees, vendors, sponsors and artists. We want all our fans to feel safe and happy at every show, and because of the actions of these individuals we weren’t able to do so. We will be issuing a further statement at a later time, but for now want to thank our fans who purchased real tickets and came to genuinely enjoy the event.

Apparently, the crashers had fake tickets and they fought their way into the event. Many shared their first-hand experience on Twitter.

Gatecrashers trashed the place, leading the stage and enclosures to collapse. The organizers of the event shut off the lights and music in an effort to get people to leave the venue but it seemed as if nothing was working.

DEAR ISLAMABAD What was borne from a love of music and wanting to share a piece of the international music world to Pakistan, Solis provided entertainment that didn’t exist and became a community based on peace and unity, bringing together homegrown businesses that supported our economy and put Pakistan on the map. Despite all the challenges of putting together such an experience in Pakistan (the things you don’t see behind the scenes like finding the right speakers, pyro, the security gates that need to be built from scratch, to convincing our artists that Pakistan is indeed safe and beautiful), we made it happen. Not once, not even 3 times in 2019, but for the 4th time yesterday in Islamabad till the incident hours after doors opened. We chose the venue and our security based on the number of tickets sold and made arrangements based on this. We warned against fake tickets on numerous occasions. However, we underestimated the sheer volume of thousands of “fake tickets” that were being sold illegally. These people were denied entry, but broke our barricades and forced themselves in, climbing on VIP platforms which couldn’t take the weight and destroyed our stage putting everyone’s safety at risk. To those that believed in us and came to genuinely enjoy the show, we are deeply sorry that this experience was ruined by others. We know that you came far and wide and we know how much you were looking forward to this event as we were too. For you, our true fans, we absolutely could not put your safety and security at risk and had to stop the event. What some of you didn’t see was the further damage these individuals caused after we shut down the event. Crores Of damage have set us back even further. WE are a community. WE are responsible for changing mindsets- together! While we will hold on Solis indefinitely in Islamabad, we will NOT let this define us. We will LEARN and PERSEVERE and keep giving Pakistan an experience they haven’t had before, much like we have done in the past. We will NOT let the actions of a few decide for the rest of us. We will be back.

Earlier, the festival did great in the city of lights. Here’s to hoping the festival will return back with better management.

The lineup for the show in Islamabad featured Julian Jordan, FDVM, Mike Williams, Turhan James, and Dannic.
