Ali Zafar has been wrapped around with controversy for the longest time now. The harassment case against him by Meesha Shafi has overshadowed his opportunities to work with bigger brands such as Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020.

The news was circulating on social media to which Ali Zafar responded with:

Zafar took the help of satire to send the message across. He addresses everyone in the video saying if in case something doesn’t work out for you, or an event (Hint: PSL) is not a success, it is probably because of me (Ali).

He then adds that he also has a lot of bloggers working for him. He is the one who has gotten President Trump elected.

Fifth Edition of PSL 2020 Raises 5 Major Controversies

PSL
Source: Geo Tv

The fifth edition of PSL kicked off in Karachi at the National Stadium with an elaborate show of fireworks, music, and dance performances but fans were extremely disappointed with the lineup and the management.

Since the inception of the franchise, this is the very first time that the cricket league will be playing on home ground and expectations are high for fans for PSL 2020.

1. Musicians were not informed about the changes in their performances

The excitement built over the past few weeks was massive and apparently the stadium was packed. Fans across Pakistan were expecting an energy-fueled show but returned home quite disappointed.

2. The Host Mimicked the Prime Minister

The host of the show Ahmed Godil opened the ceremony after the national anthem. His opening speech appeared as if he was mimicking the PM, Imran Khan.

The representatives of the PSL teams including Darren Sammy were called on stage to take the oath to “follow and respect the rules of the league and to play with respect and integrity, endeavoring to serve as role models for people around the world”.

3. The Extensive and Boring Speeches

Sindh Chief Minister, Murad Ali Shah also took the stage and congratulated Karachi for achieving a milestone such as bringing cricket home. He stated that he had asked the PCB in the past to bring at least a single match to the city of lights.

“But it was not possible at the time,” he said.

4. The screens at Iqbal Qasim enclosure and Naseem ul Ghani enclosure restrained the view of 5000 spectators

One of the blunders that took place within the Iqbal Qasim enclosure and Naseem ul Ghani enclosure was the massive screens set up which did not allow 5000 spectators to watch the match in real-time for comprehensive coverage of the opening ceremony.

5. Opening Ceremony’s Director was an Indian

Regardless of the controversies, the fireworks were spectacular last night. We have not seen anything like that in ages.

Over 350 performers including some of the most renowned local artists including Aima Khan, Sajjad Ali, and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan performed.

For the next four weeks, the tournament will be the biggest source of entertainment in the country. Reportedly, 34 matches will be shared among Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Multan with the six franchise-based teams participating.

Why Are Pathans Always The Victims of Jokes & Racial Bullying?

Racial bullying is an activity that involves a wide range of intentional degrading behavior which makes the victim feels low and weaker because of their color, culture, religion, origin, cast, or national status.

Previously, the term “racism” referred only to the color and physical appearances of a person which were considered as a mark of difference. However, currently, this term has been extended to cultural elements as well. For this reason, “the other” has now been recognized not only according to their skin color and physical appearances but also in relation to their culture, origin, religion, and language, etc.

Racial bullying increasing in Pakistan

In Pakistan, racial bullying is getting common day by day and it majorly includes people being bullied for their culture and cast. Racial bullying has taken up many shapes and one among them is racist jokes which have caused Pashtuns its primary victims. Such acts go unnoticeable, leaving disastrous effects behind.

Source: Clearswift.com

It has become normal to get Pashtun jokes in text messages and laugh at them. It is surprising to know that one can purchase a whole book or search for a website on Google under the title of “Pashtun Jokes.”

Until a few years ago, such jokes were only made on Sardars who were thought to have a very low intelligence level but presently, they are replaced by Pashtuns in the worst ever humiliating way. These racist jokes against Pashtuns have reached to media and national television as well.

Pashtuns and Pakistani media

In Pakistani dramas, a Pashtun is always given the role of a security guard, cook, shopkeeper, and some other funny creature who cannot speak Urdu fluently and is completely dump. He cannot hold another job because it is perceived that Pashtuns are stupidest creatures on earth.

The portrayal of a Pashtun man as violent, abusive, bearded, chewing naswaar (snuff) in Pakistani dramas. The purpose of these racist jokes may be to share laughter but they have adverse effects on the other side as well.

Source: The NY Times

Jokes are meant to entertain people but they also have the great social power to make up people’s minds. With this power comes great responsibility as well. These jokes have the power of establishing certain social norms. Under the expression of freedom of speech, people make such racist jokes which produce a risk of harm to a certain group of people against another.

With the intention of creating laughter, they have the strongest ability to convert fun into hatred if certain limits are not drawn on time. When a Pashtun joke is cracked, listeners start perceiving them on the basis of these racist comments without knowing what their defining qualities are.

Freedom of expression must not be used as an instrument to establish a “false truth” in a society. If the trend of these jokes is not stopped immediately, the world will see Pashtuns the way they are presented in-jokes and they will never see how brave, loyal, and welcoming they are.

Before making any racist joke and producing seed of hatred in someone’s mind, one must pay close attention to the fact that “united we stand, divided we fall.” Talking about Pashtuns as if they are from another world will bring laughter on some faces but it will equally develop a very wrong notion in others’ minds regarding Pashtuns.

We must stop promoting this stereotype and giving the impression to the world that Pashtuns are dull. Search a little and you will be amazed to know what true gems they are in every field of life.

Source: The News

History is witness to the fact that Pashtuns are behind no one in any field. If it is the area of science or politics, Pashtuns hold a stronger position. Names like Rahman Baba, Hamza Shinwari, Khushal Khattak, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, Jansher Khan, Jahangir Khan, Shahid Afridi, and Malala Yousafzai are not hidden from the world.

Throughout Pakistan, non-Pashtuns think frequently that Pashtuns are abusive who violently oppress their women. It is claimed that they do not let their daughters go to school and marry them off without their consent. It is undoubtedly true for some Pashtuns as much as it is true for some non-Pashtun families.

Tragedies and injustices do happen in Pashtun families but they alone must not define them. It is similar to the idea of Islamophobia which the Western world is spreading against Islam/Muslims. There are thousand other healthy jokes which can be made without attacking a particular ethnicity.

Nouman Ali Khan’s golden words

Nouman Ali Khan, the best-known Islamic speaker in the English language, states in his book “Revive your Heart” that the popular comedy industry tries to stereotype something of a particular race. They mock the way they speak or they mock the way they dress or they eat and everybody else gets a laugh out of it.

Source: Podchaser

Such behavior does not breed respect for other people in the culture. It actually breeds the idea of intolerance and looking at other people as something inferior. Such kind of comedy leads to assumptions which are harmful. Once it starts as I was just joking or I was just saying for fun, it starts sinking deep in minds. It starts with jokes but ends up in convictions and bigotry.

Discrimination based on a race is never okay

Racial bullying in the form of Pashtun jokes is common among those people who grow up in such an environment where racist views are expressed clearly and it is believed that racism is normal and acceptable.

It also begins as a response to certain world events or stories which urge people to make assumptions but this discrimination based on a race is never okay. It separates people and they no longer stand united. It creates boundaries between people of the same nation.

Source: Dawn

Racial bullying makes a particular race believe that they are not important. Racial bullying in the name of the joke must be stopped as immediately as possible. It is illegal to treat someone differently based on their race. It is wrong even when the person does not realize they are doing it. Diversity must be loved and made a reason to mock someone and feel insulted.

No Visas for Low-Skilled Workers Post Brexit

Labor

The latest law in the UK has been introduced and it states that low-skilled employees would not get visas under post-Brexit immigration plans disclosed by the government.

It is urging employers to “move away” from relying on “cheap labor” from Europe and capitalize on retaining staff and formulating automation technology.

The Home Office said EU and non-EU citizens coming to the UK would be dealt with equally after UK-EU free movement ceases on 31 December.

Labour told a “hostile environment” would make it hard to entice workers. But Home Secretary Priti Patel told BBC Breakfast the government wanted to “encourage people with the right talent” and “reduce the levels of people coming to the UK with low skills.”

However, the SNP called this a “ridiculous or dangerous idea”, as many in this group were undergoing “ill health or injury”.

Under the plan, the description of qualified employees would be broadened to include those educated to A-level/Scottish Highers-equivalent norms, not just graduate level, as is presently the topic.

Waiting tables and specific types of farmworkers would be eliminated from the new skilled sector, but current improvements would incorporate carpentry, plastering and childminding.

The government needs to bring in a “points-based” immigration system, as vowed in the Conservative election manifesto.

Under this, overseas citizens would have to attain 70 points to be able to help in the UK.

Uttering in English and having the offer of a qualified job with an “approved sponsor” would give them 50 points.

More points would be granted for qualifications, the income on offer and working in a sector with scarcities.

Workers from European Economic Area regions currently have the automatic right to live and help in the UK irrespective of their income or skill level.

The government states this will expire on 31 December, when the 11-month post-Brexit period will be finished.

The salary limit for skilled workers wanting to come to the UK would be reduced from £30,000 to £25,600.

However, the government announces the threshold would be as low as £20,480 for the population in “specific shortage occupations” – which currently comprise nursing, civil engineering, psychology and classical ballet dancing – or those with PhDs relevant to specific employment.

Nevertheless, there would no longer be an overall cap on the number of skilled workers who could land into the UK.

Well-Supplied Global LNG Market sees Demand Build for Cleaner-Burning Energy

Shell LNG

Global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) grew by 12.5% to 359 million tonnes in 2019, according to Shell’s latest annual LNG Outlook published today.

A significant increase that bolsters LNG’s growing role in the transition to a lower-carbon energy system.

2019 saw key developments that are helping to reshape the industry, namely;

  • an industry record of 40 million tonnes of additional supply becoming available and being consumed by the market.
  • the belief in long-term demand growth triggering record investment decisions in liquefaction capacity of 71 million tonnes.
  • an increase in diversity of contractual structures, providing a wider range of options to LNG buyers.
  • the growing role of gas in improving air quality through coal-to-gas switching in the power and industrial sectors, with coal generation phase-out announcements more than trebling.

Natural gas emits between 45 and 55% fewer greenhouse gas emissions and less than one-tenth of the air pollutants than coal when used to generate electricity.

“The global LNG market continued to evolve in 2019 with demand increasing for LNG and natural gas in power and non-power sectors,” said Maarten Wetselaar, Integrated Gas and New Energies Director at Shell. “Record supply investments will meet people’s growing need for the most flexible and cleanest-burning fossil fuel.”

“While we see weak market conditions today due to record new supply coming in, two successive mild winters and the Coronavirus situation, we expect equilibrium to return, driven by a combination of continued demand growth and reduction in new supply coming on-stream until the mid-2020s.”

Europe absorbed the majority of 2019 supply growth as competitively-priced LNG furthered coal-to-gas switching in the power sector and replaced declining domestic gas production and pipeline gas imports.

New spot-trading mechanisms and a wider variety of indices used for long-term contracts point towards LNG becoming an increasingly flexible commodity.

There was a modest rise in imports to Asia in 2019, compared to the previous two years, a result of mild weather and rising electricity generation from nuclear power in Japan and South Korea, two of the three largest global importers.

In China, LNG imports increased by 14% in 2019 as efforts continued to improve urban air quality.

Also notable was LNG demand growth in South Asia. In total, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan imported 36 million tonnes, an increase of 19% over last year, pointing to emerging growth countries in Asia.

Over the longer-term, global LNG demand is expected to double to 700 million tonnes by 2040, according to forecasts*, as gas plays a significant role in shaping a lower-carbon energy system.

Asia is expected to remain the dominant region in the decades to come, with South and South-east Asia generating more than half of the increased demand.

Shaniera Akram Wants You to Love Your Brown Skin

Mrs. Akram

Beauty standards for women in Pakistan are limited. Whether they’re tall, short, dark, white, petite or curvy – such beauty ideals have affected so many women and their self-esteem all over the globe.

Despite all the mayhem, activist and philanthropist Shaniera Akram pens a note about how it’s enough.

Earlier today, Akram took to her official Instagram to talk about her battles as a white woman who went through beyond limits to look tan because she was told it was beautiful.

Aiming to promote a much-needed message about loving the skin you’re in a society that’s fixated on gora rang (fair skin), Akram let her heart out.

View this post on Instagram

To all the girls with brown skin wishing they had white, I just want to let you know that there are a hell of a lot of white girls who grew up wishing they had dark skin too, I know I was one of them. We thought that if our skin was brown we looked healthier, prettier and more attractive to boys. We would go to any length to change the colour of white to brown because that what what was instilled in our minds, that brown was more beautiful. When I was growing up we rubbed harmful oil on our faces and bodies and lay out all day in the harsh UV sun and burn to a crisp, just so that in 3-4 days the red and extremely painful burn would die down and eventually we would have a brown tan! We would also spend hours lying in a solarium which is fake sunlight machine risking skin cancers, skin disease, spots and adding years to our faces causing wrinkles and irreversible damage. And when the sun wasn’t available we would also rub toxic stains and dyes in to our skin everyday to give our skin a 3-5 shades darker sun kissed brown look. We would spend incredible amounts of money to have brown body paint sprayed on our body every week that gets in our hair, clothes and bedsheets, a body paint that is almost like a stain on our skin that doesn’t wash off for days and when it eventually wore off it would leave our skin patchy, streaky and scaley. And I have never tried this but some girls have synthetic hormones injected in to their bodies to stimulate the pigment cells that produce melanin and actually change the colour of the skin from white to brown permanently. What I’m trying to say is Don’t try and change who you are, be happy underneath your skin, your beauty is interpreted by you, you are beautiful no matter what your skin colour is!! And just remember, to all the girls with brown skin who want white, you are the envy of half the women on this planet, women and girls all over the world that go to any extremes to have your colour skin, so that’s got to be something worth enjoying !!! #BeYourself #LoveYourself #TheGrassIsNotAlwaysGreener #BeautyIsOnTheInside #NeverJudgeByTheColourOfOnesSkin #WeAllStruggleToFindOurSelvesBeautiful #WhoCaresWhatOurSkinLooksLike

She went on to share the hardship of “half the women on this planet, women, and girls all over the world that go to any extremes to have your skin color (brown).”

Mentioning how white women resort to get a perfect tan that is considered healthy, Shaniera mentioned how she’s “burnt to a crisp” laying in the sun, used ‘solariums’ and ‘toxic stains’ to achieve brown skin.

”We thought that if our skin was brown we looked healthier, prettier and more attractive to boys. We would go to any length to change the color of white to brown because that what was instilled in our minds, that brown was more beautiful,” she wrote.

She went on to lift up all brown girls that are fed the opposite on this side of the world and told that fair skin is beautiful. “What I’m trying to say is, don’t try and change who you are, be happy underneath your skin, your beauty is interpreted by you, you are beautiful no matter what your skin color is!”

Kudos to Shaniera for giving birth to a positive message that there are always two sides to a coin.

Fawad Khan & Xulfi To Gear Up With Others For Pepsi’s Official PSL Track!

Cricket is one sport that succeeds in making Pakistan sentimental! Plus with the annual HBL PSL right around the corner, our enthusiasms are just about to let loose.

From applauding, yelling, expressing on social media and taking not just the various matches to heart but also everything else correlated with the matches.

The Friday Times

The yearly HBL PSL anthems tend to be a huge deal, people welcome them wholeheartedly.

Regardless, the cricket-oriented upbeat tunes are listened to incessantly and ring out on to the stadium in between matches. One thing or another, these anthems become unforgettable.

Pepsi has agreed to add its strength to the show by having a special PSL song composed of its very own.

The song’s teaser will be out later today and packs in the punches with a combination of popular veteran and fresh singers and a composer-producer who has a fan following of his very own.

Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan, aka Xulfi, has composed and produced this track while it is being sung by renowned names that include Fawad Khan, Aima Baig, Haroon Shahid, Asfar Hussain (vocalist from the band Bayaan) and Bilal Ali (vocalist from the band Kashmir).

Including the two young singers from Bayaan and Kashmir with other, more commercially attainable names is a step in the right path.

The song is titled ‘Khel Ja Dil Se’ – quite apt for an anthem centered over cricket, a sport that has constantly been close to Pakistan’s ‘dil’. Some of the verses can be credited to Zulfi while the main chunk of them have been penned by Adnan Dhool.

Furthermore, Zulfi also produced the other, main PSL song, ‘Tayyar Hain’, who has the vocals by Asim Azhar, Ali Azmat, Arif Lohar and Haroon Rashid – a tune that has withstood plenty of critiques ever since its waiver.

What do you think about this upcoming track?

PSL 2020: Quetta Gladiators Will Miss Boy-Wonder Naseem Shah!

Naseem Shah

Pakistan Super League (PSL) 5 franchise Quetta Gladiators will miss having boy-wonder Naseem Shah on board!

The Pakistan Cricket Board Medical Team has advised the franchise to rest their teen pacer for the first 2 matches, reported Daily Jang.!

The medical panel said Shah needs to rest to recover from his injured ribs, despite the fact that he was given clearance last week.

The panel further said that the two-match rest will see him fit for the rest of the tournament.

This means that Shah will not be playing tomorrow in the opening match of PSL 5 against defending champions Islamabad United if the franchise follows suit that is.

Earlier this month, the fast bowler had sustained the rib injury after his record-breaking hat-trick during the first Test against Bangladesh.

We wish the young lad a quick recovery and hope to see him play for his team and Pakistan soon!
