Instagram to Remove IGTV Button From App

IGTV

Back in 2018, Instagram initiated its long-form video brand IGTV. We’re less than a month into 2020 and maybe the most well-known way to access IGTV is going away.

Wondering what went wrong? Well, there’s more to learn about this news flash.

Instagram will remove the IGTV button that appears at the top right corner of users’ home screens in the main Instagram app. The reason is that no one was willingly tapping on that button.

However, that doesn’t imply that IGTV is going away or even being scaled back in any meaningful way.

That button was just one pathway into the distinguished world of IGTV. You can still find it in previews on your news feed, an entire IGTV page in the Explore tab, and on the profile page of any user who has made IGTV videos. Relieved? Excellent!

It was reported that very few people were downloading the app of IGTV. It was estimated that the app had only 7 million downloads since the day it had been launched.

When compared to TikTok, another popular app liked by the millennial generation is listed on having over 100 million downloads from the launching date!

As IGTV app is not going anywhere any time soon, the button removal and poor app download could potentially see the feature folded into the Instagram core offering soon.

In November Instagram announced a test of removing public like counts. The move was aimed to tackle online bullying and peer pressure on influencers.

Nonetheless, it has prompted some users to accuse the app of looking instead to increase direct advertising by reducing the influence of its top users.

PTV Wants to Charge You Rs. 100 Extra from Your Electricity Bill!

PTV

Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) will now charge every Pakistani Rs. 100 more on their electricity bill.

The reason behind this charge is to overcome its annual financial loss of Rs. 17 billion. Previously, the license fee that had been set was Rs. 35.

Now, consumers that have already faced a 40% surge in bills will have to pay this additional amount to make sure that the state-owned television channel’s operational costs are generated.

However, the proposal now awaits Prime Minister Imran Khan’s final approval. Furthermore, it is vital to add that during a board meeting in October 2019, it was found that PTV was not attracting viewers. Hence, the government has stopped airing ads on it!

Syed Ali Bukhari, a member of the PTV board, shared that it was people’s responsibility to contribute to the revival of state-run television.

What do you think about this? Is it our responsibility to help run the state-own channel? Or is this unjustified?

Mere Paas Tum Ho Writer Khalil-ur-Rehman Slammed by Celebrities for Misogynist Remarks

Over the past couple of days, Mere Paas Tum Ho writer Khalil-ur-Rehman has been in the limelight for all the negative reasons.

Just the other day, Tahira Abdullah zipped the writer Khalil Ur Rehman shut with her on-point speech on gender equality aka feminism.

Now, Pakistani celebrities and influencers have also spoken up against Khalil ur Rehman’s misogynist claims.

Last week ARY Digital aired a special episode of Mere Paas Tum Ho where the cast and crew got together to appear in front of a lucky audience.

However, Mira Sethi took it to Instagram to point out something Khalil had said on the set. In the clip, we hear him say: “Aurat fitratin bewafa nahi hoti, aur jo bewafa hoti hai woh fitratin aurat nahin hoti (a woman is not a betrayer by nature, and if she is then she is not a woman.)”

To this, Sethi shared a caption reading:

Men cheat: therefore men are human, fallible, CAPABLE OF REDEEMING THEMSELVES – please forgive them ⁣

Women don’t cheat: it’s not in their “nature” so when they do, they’re witches, outcasts, aberrations ⁣

humiliate them, drag them through the mud⁣

PS: women in the video are very visibly cringing⁣.

Influencer Maliha Rehman and celebs including Anushay Ashraf and Ushna Shah also responded to Mira’s post.

Do you think Khalil-ur-Rehman’s statements are justified? Or do you think he is definitely a misogynist?

Protest Against Bahria Town Karachi

Bahria Town

A protest has been called out on Wednesday after the owner of Bahria Town, Malik Riaz and his management have sent out legal notices to the people of Karachi to pay massive 35% “unlawful and forced” land development charges.

The land development charges are just for Karachi and not for Bahria town Lahore or Pindi.

The people of Karachi feel that they are being mistreated by the management and are calling out immediate boycott of any further payments that BTC demands.

Official Letter sent out to the people of Karachi.

The date and time of the protest have however not been decided as yet.

A message circulating on Social Media emphasizes greatly on rejecting the charges completely.

“We MUST REJECT this massive 35% unlawful and forced Land Development charges that Malik Riaz and his Management have suddenly imposed upon the people of Karachi. It is time to come together and challenge this hefty and illegitimate imposition. As Karachities we have not only paid heavy premiums on our purchases but have always been ahead of time on our installment payments. Due to the simplistic nature of Karachities, Malik Riaz and his team have taken us for a ride and plundered our hard-earned money in the form of various fees and surcharges. We must STOP this carnage immediately by boycotting any further payments that BTC demands. Bahria Town has never levied any additional Development Charges like this to any of their other developments at Bahria Town Lahore or Bahria Town Pindi. This unfair treatment is gifted to the people of Karachi only. If we don’t stop Malik Riaz now- we will continue to suffer financial and emotional blackmailing and related losses. Wake Up Karachi!!”

Pakistan’s Hulk Arbab Hayat is Looking for a Life Partner

arbab hayat

Arbab Khizer Hayat, also known as Pakistan’s Hulk is a weightlifter (70-stone) who is now looking for a life partner.

According to Hayat, he has rejected 300 would-be brides in fear that he might ‘crush them’.

The friendly-giant who stands at 6ft 6in is looking for a woman who weighs over 16 stone and is a great cook.

Hayat has a 10,000 calories-a-day diet, which includes 36 eggs for breakfast.

Originally belonging from Mardan, Hayat has shared:

I want to meet a woman who weighs at least 220lb, and she has to be above 6ft4in tall, so we look right together.

‘I need a heavyweight wife so I do not hurt her. All the women who have wanted to marry me so far have been too skinny.

‘My parents want me to get married. They want to have grand kids but I haven’t found the right match for myself.

In the last seven years, I have been desperately looking for love, and have seen 200-300 girls, but they were all an average weight.

‘I am 6’6 feet tall and weigh almost a tonne so it is not possible to look a normal couple with an average woman. It’s very important to me that we look right.

He added:

I don’t have any medical conditions. I am absolutely fit and comfortable with my weight.

‘But I have to keep exercising and eating to become a world champion, strong man.

‘I started gaining weight in my teens but I realised that I wanted to get into weightlifting and strongman championships. So I continued to put on weight.

Hayat has been recognized as the World’s strongest man across Pakistan. The locals consider him as a hero. He gained fame after his videos of pulling a tractor by rope while the machine went in reverse went viral on social media.

I get a lot of love and admiration from the people here. But I don’t want to stop here. I want to become a world star.

The Digital Ecosystem – Education in the Age of the 4th Industrial Revolution

PTCL 2

The world is now changing with the rapid influx of information, new trends in communication and the ability to connect anytime and from anywhere. The availability of information is no longer restricted to schools or universities. With the advent of the digital era, we see the opportunity to learn just by having a mobile and a network.

Companies are investing in engaging with the youth by creating relevant content that can connect them with the brand. PTCL is one such company that has recently started a series of talks ‘Talks@PTCL’ that is shared on their digital platforms to engage, inspire and educate the youth.

During the Talks@PTCL 2nd session, it was interesting to learn about education in the age of the 4th Industrial Revolution by Dr. Farrah Arif, a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. She is the founder and CEO of EDTechWorx, as well as an EDUTECH commonwealth scholar and a visionary techpreneur.

Dr. Farrah started off her session with one line that would go on to define her entire talk: “We are in the age of innovation, not replication”. She expressed the need for today’s education system to be transformed and evolved in order to cater to the ever-changing world; she used quotes from motivational leaders such as Jack Ma and Peter Diamandis to back her thought process.

Her opinion about the current status of education is that the focus is more on the consumption of knowledge. In reality, education needs to be about exploration and creating new pathways. She further explained that one should focus on oneself and prioritize tasks for better execution in a leadership role rather than being told what to do. This is significant in today’s age, where AI and technology are heavily relied upon to streamline and execute complex tasks instead of humans.

While talking to the audience, she outlined three ways our classrooms can prepare us for the 4th Industrial Revolution. The first being ‘empathy’, which according to Farrah, is about being aware of one’s environment. For this, classrooms need to be driven by real-life examples rather than theories taught from books. One way to introduce empathy into the classroom is through case studies, by going out and talking to people in the industry, observing their problems and trying to find solutions for them. This will give the right exposure to the students in real-life situations and will also make them aware of the environment around them.

Secondly, we need ‘collaboration’ in our classrooms to prepare for the 4th Industrial Revolution. While it is key to observe, think and innovate, it is equally important that all of this is achieved in collaboration with other people. She talked about how ‘Moodle’, an open-source learning management system that is currently used in local educational systems and has helped bridge the gap between learning and technology. However, this has a disadvantage due to lacking connection and collaboration part.

She further talked about ‘EDUCAUSE’, a community of technology, academic, industry, and campus leaders that are advancing towards higher education through the use of Information Technology in a more collaborative way. The difference is clear that Moodle concentrates on individual learning, while EDUCAUSE focuses on collaboration that is also supported in universities such as the University of Washington, who prefer to use tools that believe in collaboration. Dr. Farrah also recommends using design thinking in classrooms to encourage collaboration. Design thinking is the movement from divergence to convergence, bringing different people with unique ideas together.

Finally, she talked about ‘innovation’ in order to prepare for the 4th Industrial Revolution. Innovation is no longer a suggestion rather it is a requirement by the industry. It is quite evident that the industry experts have a perception that youth lack the leadership qualities, which are necessary to excel and grow in today’s fast-paced world. The current education system is working on an obsolete and irrelevant model, which is reflected in Pakistan’s ranking in the competitiveness index (110/141) and our competitiveness has been eroded by people that are not skilled in relevant fields to compete in the industry. Dr. Farrah recommends using industry projects by giving real-time problems to the students and solve them in a collaborative manner.

ptcl

Ending on an interesting note, she said that people in smaller cities are more innovative; therefore, it is important to bring them into the mainstream. Gladly, PTCL is aware of this fact and is providing a learning opportunity to our youth by providing a digital platform for learning through Talks@PTCL.
