Oye Kuch Ker Guzar Review: Pakistan’s First Online Movie is a Masterpiece

It’s rare to find a good Pakistani movie out there and even more so to find a decent commercial one; but to my surprise “Oye Kuch Kar Guzar” managed to not only be such a commercial masterpiece, it in fact opened doors to a new genre of films in Pakistan. Oye Kuch Ker Guzar opened with a bang on Saturday night and since it is Pakistan’s first attempt at a proper online movie, it is basking in the limitlessly rising number of viewership from around the globe.

But miraculously unlike most firsts of anything, Oye Kuch Ker Guzar didn’t lack in terms of cinematic quality and wholesome storytelling. djuice and Harris Rasheed have truly set an example of how good movies can be if the sponsoring brand lets the film maker be creative and not set limits in terms of writing and direction.

So keeping spoilers to a minimum, let’s begin!

THE PLOT!

We follow our hero “Sherry” (Ali Safina) who embarks upon a journey from Lahore to Karachi to prove to his father that he can fulfill his dream of becoming a successful musician. He is accompanied by his best friend “Jango” (Uzair Jaswal) on his train trip where they meet “Xaraa” (Ushna Shah) a typical Lahori girl on her way to her brother’s wedding and “Shabnam” (Mahjabeen Habib) an Urdu literature fanatic journeying towards Karachi to meet her favourite urdu writer. But fate had a not-so-subtle plan for them in mind and they are thrown into a whirlpool of adventure, mayhem and excitement to realize that they are the creators of their own destinies.

THE CHALLENGER BECOMES THE CHAMPION!

I straightforwardly give this online masterpiece a whopping 8 out of 10; I think that’s the highest I have so far awarded any Pakistani production…and if you don’t take my word for it, by all means, do have a look at it yourself. YES…since this is an online movie, available to all on YouTube. Oye Kuch Ker Guzar enjoys immediate viewing by everyone anywhere in the world till the end of days.

It has so far secured the 42th position in the Youtube’s top 100 trending list since it was uploaded on Saturday night. Even if this was a regular box office movie I wouldn’t have minded watching it twice or thrice on the big screen. Another new appeal they brought to the movie was interactivity. When watching it, you’ll feel as part of the story itself since it would be up to you to choose where the story should go from each cliffhanger.

At the premiere we followed a particular set of options that led to the end of the movie, but once I got home I actually tried all the other options too and it felt like I had watched two or more movies instead of one…I couldn’t have been more satisfied.

5 Things to expect from Pakistan’s first online Movie Oye Kuch Ker Guzar

Starting with cast and crew, I believe Harris Rasheed completely understands and whole-heartedly connects to his audience. He doesn’t underestimate the audience and neither does the cast or how their roles were written. Ali Safina the lead of the movie stole most of the show because after all the story is about his journey to pursue his dreams. And we realize in the last moments of the story why that is so. Mahjabeen Habib totally blew me away with that flawless command over the

Mahjabeen Habib totally blew me away with that flawless command over the Urdu language that though highly impressed I could relate to Ali’s character about how confusing it was to hear such a pure form of Urdu. Uzair was more or less go to person for the cheeky humor and he delivered such an excellent one liners that it sincerely made me laugh. It was hard to realize whether the casting was done according to the characters or the characters were designed keeping the cast in mind.

The writing couldn’t have been more perfect, neither the narration of it nor the humor, they understood the audience and made a movie that anyone could relate to. They even broke the 4th wall so creatively, which had somewhat become a trend in movie culture of late 2015 and something that a lot of other local movies have been struggling to be good at.

From the first frame to the last one, all seem to be so masterfully composed that it’s breathtaking; from Sherry running towards the train to when he’s playing his guitar in his dad’s workshop, the travelling montages even the nightmarish yet vibrant Dakoo setting and when Sherry energizes a haduken. The makers of the film realized the importance of light and when & where to use what sort of camera angles.

All in all this movie looked nor felt any less than a feature Hollywood blockbuster. From brilliantly achieved colour corrections and stylized transitions between scenes and a totally savage cameo from the internet sensation known as Tahir Shah, this movie was easily the best comedy movie made in Pakistan of the decade. And though it had no problem being a movie meant for big screen with spectacular visuals and captivating songs, I believe the film makers wanted to empower the audience to take control of the narrative…and there couldn’t be a better place to do that than YouTube.

And the most astounding fact about the movie was perhaps behind the cameras. Though the team had some of the best film making equipment at their disposal…the entirety of the movie was shot in only 8 days, no more and no less. The cast and crew rush around half of Pakistan from one location to the other. And with all that there seemed to be no disaster on set, no errors or anything. There was another bit of wonder that the sound team (comprising of just two people) created every bit of sound and music note themselves.

The tinging guitar chord that strung when they tried moving silently away from their captors or when Sherry’s heart crumples when he hears out Xaraa for the first time. Very sound you hear, and there was a huge variety of sound in the movie, was created individually. And all that was done on the least possible budget imaginable for a box office movie. And even then the budget wasn’t more than most YouTube productions internationally. Oh and did I mention that this was Harris Rasheed’s first movie venture EVER?

Being such an incredible movie there are close to no nitpicking I can do about the movie and for me that is impossible. It feels unnatural!

If I had to I’d say that there were a bit too many brand placements, but cleverly placed those brandings did a lot to drive the story forward. But if you’re an avid YouTuber like myself then I guess you’ll get used to watching such brandings since that’s the Youtuber’s bread & Butter…so can’t argue with that.

The only true problem I did have with the movie was that it could have ended with a blast…it could have been exciting but The film makers took another simpler route. But what we got wasn’t bad either, just not what we expected.

All in all, Oye Kuch Ker Guzar stands to show big box office producers and directors and seasoned actors that when you inject the project with the right talents, and ample amount of dedication, commitment and passion then no matter how small the budget and how little the experience, you can still create a work of art.

I recommend every person who has access to the internet to go and watch the movie and judge for yourself or just log on Youtube and watch!

10 Travel Songs For Road Trip Adventures That You Should Add to Your Playlist

You’ve planned one great adventure to a far-off place with your friends. You’re all set to go on one of the best road trips of your life with the car all loaded up and ready to run. But then it strikes you: what about the music? Your friends won’t be too enthusiastic about listening to the songs of the mountains. So here’s a list of some fantastic travel songs especially catering to road trips.

1) Dil Chahta Hai

Dil chahta hai/Hum na rahein kabhi/Yaaron k bin

This is a classic travel song. What’s not to love about this catchy number with the singer crooning about chamkeelay din with your loved ones?

2) Sky Full of Stars – Coldplay

The video is lovely, but we recommend sticking to the music only when you’re driving. The lyrics are well-composed and Coldplay is entertaining as always with the perfect music and perfect lyrics. Other Coldplay numbers are Paradise and Fix You (the latter is a little depressing though).

3) Khwabon ke Parindey – Zindagi na Milegi Dubara

This song makes you feel so light and dreamy. It’s great for those dramatic staring-out-the-window car moments.

4) Sunday Morning – Maroon 5

Maroon 5 is catchy as anything, and it doesn’t fail to impress with this item. Jam to this number during your road trip.

5) Happy – Pharrel Williams

All right, this song can be a little annoying, but if you really are feeling on top of the world, we highly recommend putting this track on to complement your bubbly feelings. You’ll find yourself singing along to Williams: Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof!

6) Aja Re Aaja – Karachi Se Lahore

The movie was a hit in Pakistan, and the sequel is impressing as well. The song itself is addictive and incredibly relevant to travel with its intriguing lyrics.

Chalte chalte ruk jaaye
Dil yeh sambhal na paaye
Ho jata hai kuch aise kabhi
Na phir yeh dekhe
Kuch aur yeh na jaane deewanagi

7) Hymn for the Weekend – Beyonce and Coldplay

This had to be granted a spot in our list: it’s lively, catchy, and can be danced along to (the driver is exempted from the dancing). Every moment in the song is a delight to listen to, so tune it up while you cruise to your destination.

8) Aao Milo Chaley – Jab We Met

What a song! The movie depicts two complete opposites who are forced to travel together due to the strangest of circumstances. And the lyrics – indescribable! It will force you to listen and even hum along – a guaranteed lift of spirits!

Hum jo chalne lagein, chalne lagein hain ye raste.

9) Sarak Sarak – Ho Mann Jahan

Pakistanis are really reaching out with their songs and movies, and this song doesn’t fall behind. It is a unique one which will intrigue your friends and family if you decide to play it during your traverse.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQPgAiwL02Q

10) Downeaster Alexa – Billy Joel

This song has the special characteristic of being hard to forget and having meaningful lyrics; Joel sings about the troubles of being a poor fisherman in the ultimate travel song.

Make sure you pick these songs for your next trip! After all, there is no medicine like music.

Facebook Messenger Introduces Group Video Chat

Facebook’s Messenger has once again rolled out a new feature, which was also one of the most awaited features users had been waiting for.

Stephane Taine, Product Manager, Messenger, announced the new feature, saying “As we close the year, we’re thrilled to launch the most requested Messenger feature ever – the ability to video chat in groups. Group Video Chat in Messenger makes it simple and seamless to stay connected face-to-face. Starting today, Group Video Chat is rolling out to Android and iOS devices, and the desktop version of Messenger, worldwide.”

How it Works

Group Video Chat is super easy to use (and, of course, free over wifi!). You can see up to six people at a time … but don’t worry if your group is a little larger because up to 50 friends can join in and choose to just listen in and join via voice, or be on camera. Once more than 6 people are on the call, just the dominant speaker is shown to all participants.

If you want to use the group video calling feature, you can select friends or a group text thread to invite to a video call!

To get started, you’ll need the latest version of Messenger. All you have to do is jump into an existing group conversation, or create a new one. Then tap on the video icon on the upper right of the screen to enter the video chat and everyone in the group will be notified. Each person can join when they are ready with just one tap. For an extra nudge, you can also directly ring just a few people or the whole group.

10 Fun Things To Do In Winter

If you have noticed the sudden need to break open your slightly warmer blanket and perhaps thinking of switching down your fan in the evening, ladies and gentlemen, it is perhaps because winter is finally here.

Now don’t get me wrong. We here in Karachi, barely know what it is like to have a proper winter, but let us not forget about the rest of Pakistan that does get to enjoy one with coats and jackets and those to die for winter boots.

Of course, winter might not be for all but those of us who have had a chance to experience the real winter will beg to differ.

Here is our comprehensive list of some of the top things one should do in winter.

1.Bonfires

When else would you get a chance to sit around a fire and sing some of the most cringe-worthy songs other than a bonfire in winter?

So break out those beanies and brush up on your John Mayer songs.

2.Drink endless coffee

We Pakistani’s just needed an excuse to Instagram a coffee cup and what better time to do it then winters when all we do is have endless coffee while curled up in bed with our favorite book.

3. Roast marshmallows

3

Have you ever heard of a bonfire without marshmallows?

Just like a bonfire is a must in winters, roasting marshmallows is equally important too.

4. Walk around in pajamas the entire day

4

There is nothing better than pajamas. And in winter an entire day lounging around in your favorite pair, nothing beats that.

5. Binge watching television shows

5

For most of us working folks and even university students, keeping a tab on our favorite television series becomes a slight bit of a hassle with so many new shows popping up left and right.

With winter nights being long and sometimes a bit too unbearable, catching up on all your favorite television shows is definitely one way to spend winters.

6. Morning walks

6

Now getting up early in the morning that too with freezing temperatures doesn’t exactly sound exciting. But they are definitely worth it in winter. Grab your cup of go to coffee, pull on your favorite hoodie and it is time to enjoy the winter morning walk.

7. Catch up on your reading

7

If you are a bibliophile, winters are heavenly for you.

With so much time on hand to be lazy and lounge around in bed, catching up on that pile of books on your side table, nothing beats that.

8. Camping

8

To most people, this would sound absurd. Camping? That also in freezing temperatures doesn’t exactly sound very appealing.

But late night bonfires, roasting marshmallows, waking up to some of the most beautiful scenery, winter camping definitely beats down the summer one.

9. Eat your yearly supply of dry fruits

9

What better time than the winters to eat dry fruits to your heart’s content?

10. BBQ

at Big Bite Mount Lavinia

You’ve got to admit BBQ doesn’t exactly need a particular weather or a season to be enjoyed.

But when it comes to winters and BBQs and those amazing mouthwatering tikkas and seekh kebab, nothing beats that.

Katrina & Ranbir’s Last Movie ‘Jagga Jasoos’ Trailer Revealed!

The Bollywood heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor has officially ended his relationship with the gorgeous Bollywood beauty Katrina Kaif. Both actors will now be seen in the upcoming movie, Jagga Jasoos even though the duo have parted ways.

The trailer of the movie is now out and it is the quirkiest thing you will see today!

https://youtu.be/zBobLhXFBio

The trailer is sans dialogues and only compromises of music and voices.

According to the Indian media reports, Ranbir during the shooting of the film told the director Anurag Basu not to cast him and Katrina ever in a film together ever.

This distance seems pretty disturbing!

katrina-3

Ranbir and Kat both turned their backs on eachother during a song shoot, proving that they can’t bare each other. I wonder how they completed this film?

Both Ranbir and Katrina are total eye candies and their fans were rooting for them when they were couple. Their breakup did break many hearts! The ex-couple now maintains a distance by not bumping into each other at B-Town parties.

Exploring more about the breakup adventure, the Indian media reports revealed that the shoot for the film Jagga Jasoos was completed earlier this week after which Ranbir and the team decided to party whereas Kat decided to leave.

According to the details, Ranbir is expected to head off to Mumbai after wrapping up from the Morroco shoot location whereas Katrina, after coming back to Mumbai has decided to head off to London to spend some quality time with her family.

Well! This brawl does make us curious whether Anurag Basu’s directorial venture Jagga Jasoos, slated to release on June 3rd will pay off or will it see a disastrous fall, just because of Ranbir and Katrina?

If Popular Demand is not Shown in Pakistani Cinemas, Then Cinema Itself Will Die: Nadeem Mandviwalla

The recent decision to screen Bollywood movies again by cinema owners has been met with a certain amount of public criticism. With our artists and celebrities still unwelcome in the neighboring country, the Pakistani audience seems to be conflicted in accepting the screening of Indian content in theaters. The irony, however, is the fact that cinemas have been relatively empty as demand for Bollywood still exists and not supplying it has resulted in losses for the owners.

Brandsyanrio spoke with Nadeem Mandviwalla, Chief Executive of Mandviwalla Entertainment, to take his opinion on the burning matter.

According to the veteran, the right of declaring a ban on Bollywood movies in Pakistani cinemas belongs to the state alone.

“It was always called a suspension, not a ban – that prerogative lies with the Pakistani government”, he said

He added that the Pakistani Cinema owners came to the decision of uplifting the ban after enough time has lapsed for things to cool down with India.

Pakistani Cinemas Lift Bollywood Ban: Hostile Reaction by the Nation

What is more, he revealed that initially, the Indian stance was not voluntary either. It was coerced with many actors, directors and producers being forced to give statements under threats with anyone speaking against it being targeted and victimized.

“Someone needed to take the first step to normalize things once they have cooled down”, he added.

“At the time the Indian Film association took a stance, we had no choice but to retaliate even though we knew it would mean incurring losses, ” said Mandviwalla.

It is to be noted that not showing Indian content has led to a 50 % loss in revenue for Pakistani cinemas.  Many shows were canceled due to a lack of audience. Turkish, Hollywood and Pakistani content was being shown in theaters, however, there wasn’t much demand for it as compared to Bollywood movies.

Pakistani Cinemas in Loss as Bollywood Movies Face Ban!

“If popular demand is not shown in the cinema, then cinema itself will die “ commented Nadeem Mandviwalla.

As soon as the news to screen Bollywood films in Pakistani cinemas became public, the world of entertainment erupted into another night-time television drama. Veteran Pakistani director, Syed Noor is amongst those condemning the approval on Bollywood movies.

According to the ‘Meri Shaadi Karao’ director, Syed Noor believes the Pakistani cinema owners are nothing more than enemies of the state by screening Bollywood movies again.

Conversely, Nadeem Mandviwalla remarked that the Lollywood director should come with a viable solution to save Pakistani cinemas.

“Having an opinion is fine, but you must also provide an alternate solution that is practical”

He also highlighted that it is unfair that film industry alone suffers because of the political hullabaloo with India.

“We have to face the fact that our cinema industry does depend on Bollywood. This industry is no different to others. After all Pakistan cannot grow enough potatoes to meet internal demand and so it imports potatoes from India. If we want to show our stance towards India, then it should also apply to the $ 2 billion trade that we do with them- this should be cut off too. Just focusing on not featuring Bollywood films doesn’t solve the problem or make sense”

It seems like it would have been better if Pakistani cinemas continued to show Bollywood content earlier regardless of the political chaos. Now while circumstances haven’t changed, decisions are being reversed.

The general public is viewing the decision of cinema owners as solely out of economic concerns rather than on the basis of solidarity.  It is to be observed that the movie-buffs are still watching Bollywood movies on DVD and downloading the content since there has been no ban on it.

Pakistani Cinemas Lift Bollywood Ban: Hostile Reaction by the Nation

The news of Pakistani cinema owners officially lifting the ban on Bollywood films, has received criticism not only from people associated with the entertainment industry but also politicians and other media personnel alike.

The ban came right after an attack on an army base in Kashmir in which 19 Pakistani soldiers were killed.

This was then followed by Bollywood producers banning Pakistani artists in Indian films which resulted in a subsequent reaction by the cinema owners in Pakistan who imposed an indefinite veto on the screening of Bollywood films in the country.

Fast forward two months and the Pakistani cinema owners have now, officially lifted the self-imposed ban on Bollywood films.

However, this news was not exactly met with much enthusiasm as expected, as much of the entertainment industry is leaning towards investing in local projects rather than Bollywood content.

The removal of the Bollywood Ban has been met with a hostile reaction from the general public who took to social media and started the hashtag #DontLiftBollywoodBan which is still among the top twitter trends.

Read how people are reacting here!

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has been criticized in the past for banning channels and journalists, was once again questioned for not taking any action over something as significant as this.

Netflix Announce Pakistani Dramas: Complete List Revealed!

In January, the television and movie streaming app, Netflix was launched in Pakistan and it seemed like this was it. However, due to limitations, not everything was available to be streamed in the country.  Now the latest news is that our very own Pakistani drama serials are also available for streaming on the application.

Syed Noor Criticizes Cinema Owners For Being “Mulk Ke Dushman” by Uplifting Bollywood Ban!

With the news of Pakistani cinemas to start screening of Bollywood films, the world of entertainment has erupted into another nighttime television drama. Veteran Pakistani director, Syed Noor is among those condemning the approval on Bollywood movies.

The ban was self-imposed by cinema owners, back in October after the Uri attack and its subsequent meltdown. As per the buzz, the ban is all set to be lifted soon.

According to the ‘Meri Shaadi Karao’ director, Syed Noor believes the Pakistani cinema owners are nothing more than enemies of the state by screening Bollywood movies again.

See what Syed Noor had to say here!

“At the time when they self-imposed it, cinema owners knew the government’s stance; they knew the spirit of antagonism [towards India] that was in the air. The month of Moharram was starting, and there were no interesting films lined up. So, one fine morning, they decided to show their ‘national spirit’ by announcing the ban. The entire world knows Indian films were being imported as a ‘foreign’ item. Who are they misleading?” says Syed Noor

The Pakistani Film Association is all set to go to court with the director, however, hoping that it doesn’t come to that.

Noor believes a viable solution for this is needed by the electronic regulatory body PEMRA, which is known for its firm action towards shutting down television channels.

Activemedia Set to Introduce Pakistan’s First DOOH in Lahore

Ever been stuck in traffic? Well of course you have. An average person spends a minimum of 2 hours roughly in a traffic jam per day. The usual distractions, the radio, texting, can only work so much. What else can a driver do to kill time? Enter DOOH and the world got more interesting.

Billboards and other forms of advertising have had their time. People with their limited time spans demand something more to be impressed. Therefore the trend is experiencing a major shift. The good old billboards are rarely glanced upon, but go out on the road and see a digital screen playing the same ad, you’re bound to watch.

Whether you’re stuck in a bad traffic jam, or just driving through, if you come across a digital screen, chances are you will definitely stop to look. Whatever message the advertiser wants to relay, you will certainly receive.

Digital OOH is taking over all other forms of advertising and it is here to stay. Keeping up with the trend, Activemedia – Pakistan’s leading activation agency, has set out to digitize the city of Lahore. The historic city is a perfect choice for this form of advertising. The introduction of modern technology against the historic landscape as a backdrop will be a compelling contrast.

DOOH advertising is a tech-driven medium, taking help from online and mobile. Hence it is the most innovative medium currently functional in the market. The content being displayed can be altered and adjusted to keep the audience engaged. For instance data based on live feeds on weather condition, time or location can be used to make the content more interesting.

Imagine being on the road on a hot sunny day and an ad for a chilled cold drink comes up in front of you. You will definitely be interested in having some to quench your thirst. Very soon you will be able to experience DOOH.
