UAE Clears the Air About Visa Suspension for Pakistanis

Update: News about Pakistanis being rejected for UAE visas made quite a buzz, however, it seems like this was just a rumor for dampening the festivities.

The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) of Dubai have denied these rumors. According to Khaleej Times, the GDRFA mentions,

“Visitors from Pakistan are welcome to enter Dubai after obtaining a visa”

UAE officials have asked visitors not to fall for any rumors and to verify any news they receive from UAE government agencies.

 

The biggest celebration welcoming 2018 is just around the corner, every year thousands of people travel to top destinations such as Dubai in order to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

For Pakistanis the closest place is Dubai, every travel enthusiast dreams of welcoming the New Year’s overlooking the magnificent fireworks display at the Burj Al Khalifa.

However, this time around it seems Pakistanis wanting to travel to Dubai for the new year will have to hold off their plans.

The Travel Agents Association of Pakistan (TAAP) on Monday has reported that the UAE government has been rejecting visit visa applications from Pakistanis and travel agents have been asked to stop applying until further instructions are given.

According to Chairman of the Travel Agents Association Naeem Sharif, 

“No particular details have been provided for the visa rejection.”

300,000 Pakistanis have already reached Dubai for the New Years celebrations, but the rest are surely in for a disappointment. The restrictions have been imposed only for Pakistanis as a large number have already gone on visit visa.

Vice Chairman Travel Agents Association, Nadeem Sharif also mentioned that the situation is a temporary arrangement and he thinks visas will be issued after 1st Jan as New Years celebrations would be over.

Bitcoin Cash’s Value Rises as Bitcoin Crashes!

There’s a brief crash in Bitcoin as the Coinbase initiated Bitcoin cash trade!

The Coinbase could only continue the trade for four minutes before the crash was triggered and the operation was immediately halted.

Another rise in the price encouraged heavy withdrawals that ended in the trading to halt. The prices amplified by more than 10% in just an hour on Wednesday morning.

BITCOIN CASH ON THE RISE!

The crash appeared when Coinbase, the largest and most significant cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, initiated the trading of alternative Bitcoin Cash.

Arther Hayes, the Chief Executive at Bitcoin-derivatives exchange Bitmex, added a statement in the same regard saying:

“It seems as if Bitcoin Cash being added to Coinbase has caused a rotation from Bitcoin into Bitcoin Cash. The speculation now is that if you can buy on Coinbase, it’ll add to this particular altcoin.”

However, Coinbase could only carry the trading operations for our minutes live on GDAX after which it was stopped. It stated that the new orders will not be entertained and the unfilled orders will also be expunged.

They didn’t reveal the reason behind the halt but stated that it would last until 9 a.m. PST. According to the exchange’s order book, the prices for the trading reached as high as $9,500 before it was stopped.

Call it a rival or an alternative but Bitcoin Cash has been spun out of Bitcoin only – during last August.

This rival cryptocurrency was designed to boost the number of transactions in this regard.

There was an increase in this rival cryptocurrency recently by 47% at $3,246.07 and the increase in Bitcoin cash was by ten folds since its debut.

On the whole, Bitcoin experienced a slump and dropped to $15,500 from $17,760, according to CoinDesk. Recently, it was at $16,650.

Amid the recent crash, a key cryptocurrency exchange revealed that the transaction of bitcoins isn’t possible.

Gemini, another famous and significant exchange co-owned by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, said in a statement posted to Twitter that the only reason they can’t offer the process transaction is that of the problems with blockchain.

“BTC deposits and withdrawals are temporarily unavailable due to an extreme delay in block mining on the Bitcoin Network. All customers assets remain secure.”

It took around 15 minutes for this outage to get resolved.

Since the increase in value, the trading volumes also surged leading to the so-called brownouts that cause the Bitcoin exchanges to suffer.

It is important to take note of the Gemini’s outage because the bitcoin prices it trades on are the sole reference for future transactions by Cboe Global Markets.

KIA Signs Agreement For Production of Vehicles in Pakistan

Lucky Cement recently announced the launch of KIA Motors in Pakistan. It has now been reported that an agreement between the Ministry of Industries and Production (MoIP) and KIA Lucky Motors has been signed on Monday.

The agreement between MoIP and KIA talks about the production of passenger and light commercial vehicles under Automotive Development Policy 2016-2021. However, KIA Lucky Motors has decided to import the vehicles in the beginning stages till their plant in Karachi is operational.

KIA will be investing $115 million in Karachi for setting up an automobile assembly plant that will manufacture a range of passenger and commercial vehicles.

Testing has been carried out in Karachi and Hyderabad for KIA vehicles which have given an idea about the kind of vehicles the company plans to introduce in the country.

Deadly Traffic Jam in Karachi Due to Another Protest!

It was supposed to be a usual day for many of us Karachiites! The metropolis was already geared up to brace the harsh winter winds. But who knew that a massive traffic jam is all set to strike the city all over again!

Yeap, the citizens are witnessing a major traffic hurdle in the metropolis that nobody saw coming

Despite the fact that people in Karachi now don’t bat an eye on the daily traffic problem, having made peace with that fact; the traffic in the metropolis has recently surpassed an average Karachiites patience level.

Of course, the reason is yet another protest that is affecting traffic various areas of town.

Apparently, the citizens are protesting against the Encroachment drives  & have come out to streets to express their anger.

Protests are going on in Karimabad, Liaquatabad & F.B. Area.

A massive traffic jam is now reported at Shaheed-e-Millat, Expressway, D.H.A and Baloch Colony Expressway.

Meanwhile, citizens are also facing trouble at Kalapul, EBM Causeway, Sunset Boulevard and Khyban-e-Ittihad.

It is suggested to stay updated with traffic and plan accordingly to avoid being unnecessarily stuck for long hours.

Facebook Kickstarts Crackdown on ‘Like This’ Posts in Your News Feed

Brands, it is time to change your tactics,

No more forcing or begging your followers to boost your presence because if that’s what you are planning to do, you are surely going to face a setback from Facebook.

Businesses usually follow strategies that encourages their followers to increase their likes and boost their online presence.

Facebook is now planning to take a step to stop this from happening!

According to a statement released by Facebook on Monday, their new step is to clamp down the ‘engagement bait’ throughout the social media platform this week.

If Facebook finds any page asking their followers to like, comment, share, or perform similar actions on their shared content to boost their presence and reach, it will ‘penalize’ them.

This will be done through ‘demoting’ the posts that follow such tactics.

“To help us foster more authentic engagement, teams at Facebook have reviewed and categorized hundreds of thousands of posts to inform a machine learning model that can detect different types of engagement bait,” said Henry Silverman and Lin Huang – the Operations Integrity Specialist and Engineer at Facebook.

They further added:

“Posts that use this tactic will be shown less in News Feed.”

Increased user engagement is great for Facebook pages – whether they are owned by individuals, establishments, or businesses. Not only their online presence is enhances, their social network also expands. As a result, they experience better sales and exposure through improved marketing capacity.

But using tactics, which forces the user to take certain actions for undesirable content can kill the whole purpose of authentic Facebook marketing.

It clogs up the News Feed and make it less effective.

Since Facebook has already identified this problem, they are set to take a step for it.
It can be said that the move is actually inspired by the algorithm changes implemented by Google to improve its search results to help users find only valuable content.

This is bad news for most but great for others who could not help their marketing capacity through natural means. The ‘stricter demotions’ step by Facebook will help address and fix this issue.

At the same time, the company also confirmed that the screening will be done individually and will not affect posts that encourage fundraising efforts, people looking for tips, or posts about missing child. Such posts will get the engagement they need without any demotion.

Stipendium Hungaricum Programme 

The Programme is managed by Higher Education Commission, Islamabad and Tempus Public Foundation, Hungary, welcoming all Applications from Pakistani/AJ&K nationals.

All awards will be made on the basis of:

  1. the academic merit,
  2. quality of the research proposal,
  3. the potential of the candidate,
  4. likely impact of the work on the development of Pakistan.

Scholarship Types

Stipendium Hungaricum scholarships are available for Pakistani students fulfilling basic eligibility criteria in specified disciplines and other requirements of Hungarian universities under following programs:

  • Bachelor Degree (04 years degree programme after 12 years education)
  • Master Degree (02 years degree programme after 16 years education)
  • Ph.D. Degree (03 years doctoral degree (Ph.D.) after 18 years education)

Monthly stipend

Bachelor and Masters Scholarships: monthly HUF 40,460/- (cca EUR 130) contribution to the living expenses, for 12 months a year, until the completion of studie

Doctoral level: according to the current Hungarian legislation, monthly HUF 140,000/-(cca EUR 450) at present – for 12 months a year, until the completion of studies.

Accommodation

Dormitory place or a contribution of HUF 40,000/- to accommodation costs for the whole duration of the scholarship period

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be a citizen of Pakistan/AJ&K.
  • Must be between the age of 18-22 years for undergraduate programmes, for which they are applying for admission and the age limit should not exceed from 35 years for postgraduate Master’s (18 years) and Ph.D. programs on 31st January 2018.
  • In case of Ph.D. programs, for full-time employees of public sector Universities, Colleges and R&D organizations the maximum age must be 40 years on 31st January 2018.
    The applicant must have completed HSSC/Intermediate or equivalent for application in 04 years Bachelor’s (Undergraduate Program).
  • The applicant must have completed 16 years Bachelors/or equivalent Degree for application in Master’s (Postgraduate Program).
  • The applicant must have completed 18 years Degree/or equivalent for application in Ph.D. Program.
  • The applicant must fill all the fields of the Hungary Application Form and HEC application form and no column or field should be left unfilled.
  • Certificates/Transcript/Degrees to be attached must be attested by the attesting authorities such as IBCC and HEC. Equivalence of O & A level from IBCC is mandatory.
  • It is the sole responsibility of the candidate to make sure that all technical/engineering/professional programmes which they are applying, must be accredited by the respective Councils/Governing Bodies such as PEC, PMDC etc.
  • IELTS/TOEFL scores as required, where applicable.
  • All applicants must submit medical certificate of satisfactory health condition (issued not earlier than 1 month, a written certificate from a physician to prove that the applicant does not have the following illnesses: AIDS, Hepatitis A, B, C or any other epidemic conditions)
  • In case of final selection, applicants will have to submit a bond on legal paper to HEC that he/she will not change discipline after final award of scholarship, and immediately after completion of his/her degree, he/she will return back to Pakistan to serve the country for a period as prescribed by the HEC. In case of failure to do so, HEC reserves the right to recover from the candidate or his/her guarantor, a penalty amount as prescribed/decided by the HEC.
  • Applicants must fulfill all other requirements set by host Hungarian university/Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.
  • In case of final selection, the candidate has to submit a bond agreement and will not be allowed to withdraw from the scholarship.
  • Applicants declining HEC nomination will be barred for five years to apply in any HEC programme.

Terror Threat at Lahore Airport Calls for Increased Security

As news about the Quetta attack spread across the country, security was tightened at the Allama Iqbal Internation Airport in Lahore. The Airport Security Force (ASF) conducted a meeting in this regard.

Chief Security Officer (CSO) Ehsan Ullah met the Inspector general Punjab to discuss the situation at the airport after the brutal attack at a church in Quetta was carried out in the name of terror attacks.

A foolproof security plan has now been developed which will include tightening of vehicle and passenger searches. Sources have mentioned that there has been a threat of terrorist attacks in buildings and sensitive installations due to which security has been increased across the airport.

The various security enhancements have been made at the Allama Iqbal International Airport: 

  1. ASF has increased patrolling
  2. Body search of passengers
  3. Search of vehicles visiting the airport
  4. Luggage search
  5. Only one person allowed to drop or receive travelers

Pakistan International Airlines chief security officer had issued a circular titled “Daesh pursuing aviation plot” to Lahore’s airport manager. This mentioned the terrorist group was planning attacks that included hijacking airports using the low ranking staff.

As reported by The Nation who have a copy of the circular, it mentions:

“Daesh is planning to target commercial aviation using pilots, flight crew, and ground staff. Now it has been reliably learned that it [Daesh] has developed a multi-layered programme of conducting aviation operation, including hijackings, armed attacks as well as the detonation of aircrafts using concealed IEDs (improvised explosive devices).”

Hyundai Nishat To Inaugurate New Plant

The Government released the new Automobile Policy earlier on in 2016, after which various companies have shown interest in setting up their production plants across Pakistan. This new policy has various benefits, new investors can also enjoy reduced taxes and cheaper import costs of parts.

Another company, Hyundai Nishat Motors (HNML) has now been granted the approval to set up a ‘greenfield’ project that will undertake the assembly and production of cars from its plant which is based in Faisalabad. 

The new plant is a joint venture with Hyundai Motor Corporation (HMC) which will be inaugurated on December 20, 2017 at the M-3 Industrial City in Faisalabad.

Hyundai has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Industries and Production under the Automotive Development Policy 2016-21. The new agreement will allow them to assemble and sell passenger and around 1,000 commercial vehicles in Pakistan, this information has been quoted by the Nishat Mills Limited.

The Hyundai-Nishat joint venture is important news as just recently, Lucky Cement, one of the largest cement makers in Pakistan that has brought in Kia Motor Company just two months before the Hyundai- Nishat announcement.

PFA Warns Against Eating This Popular Frozen Fish

For many Pakistanis, fish is a winter delicacy. We all love to cozy up in the chilly weather and prepare our favorite seafood dishes to cure our winter blues.

This season is a perfect time to buy and eat as many fish and seafood varieties. But living in a nation where you are always dubious about what you are eating, it was very important to find the right, healthy fish to cook.

According to latest reports, Punjab Food Authority has released a warning against sellers and consumers of Pangasius frozen fish.

The samples of the particular frozen fish were sent to an international laboratory and as per the report, a massive amount of mold, listeria and moisture content was discovered in the samples.

For those who don’t know, Listeria can lead to:

  1. Result in miscarriage for pregnant women
  2. Serious infection of the newborn
  3. Weaken immune system
  4. Throat and respiratory problems

Warning!

Pangasius fish can cause serious poisoning through cross-contamination of infection in other products when stored in the freezer.

Also, the food authority has notified that serious action will be taken against sellers of Pangasius frozen fish.

Indians React to Pakistani Movie Chupan Chupai Trailer

December is the season for movies in Pakistan, another comedy film Chupan Chupai starring none other than the dapper Ahsan Khan and beauty, Neelum Muneer is all set to release on the 29th of December, 2016.

The upcoming Pakistani movie, Chupan Chupai released its official trailer recently and it has created an uproar over social media. The movie has been produced by Mohsin Ali, the man who wrote the witty dialogues for Wrong No. Chupan Chupai is going to be his directorial debut.

People across the border hardly get to watch Pakistani films, however, Chupan Chupai has received quite the feedback from Indians. Various Youtubers have reviewed the trailer and given their reviews.

Looks like the Indian public has fallen in love with our dazzling diva, Neelum Muneer. They are all praises for her acting skills and can’t get over her beauty.

 

Popular Indian YouTube, ‘Superguy’ urged viewers to go watch the movie on the first day as he found it quite funny and loved Neelum’s acting. 

Another reviewer did not find it as funny as Na Maloom Afraad 2 but mentioned it was still worth a watch as some dialogues from the trailer are quite hilarious!

Another reviewer from across the border, Mayank mentions, the trailer reminds him of Na Maloom Afraad 2 and Bollywood blockbuster, Hera Pheri.

Absar Alam Removed as Chairman PEMRA

the Lahore High Court has declared the appointment of Absar Alam as chairman of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulation Authority (PEMRA) as invalid, removing him from the position.

A petition was filed by Azhar Siddique Advocate challenging the appointment of the senior journalist as PEMRA’s chief.

Here’s Why Absar Alam’s appointment has been declared illegal!

As per the petitioner, Alam did not fulfill the criteria of being the chief of the media-watchdog. He also accused him of misusing his position by pursuing the agenda of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

According to ARY News, Absar Alam was reaping a whopping salary of Rs1.5 million per. month. Meanwhile, his post was equivalent to a management position. Apparently, the maximum salary allotted for this scale is Rs450,000.

Hence, the advocate urged the court to declare Absar’s appointment as illegal

The judge, in his remarks, said that an advertisement should be placed for the appointment of new PEMRA chief.

Back in October 2015, the federal government had appointed Absar Alam, a working journalist, on the top position of electronic media watch-dog.

The feature is now globally released across Android and iOS.

Hailstorm & Rain Lash Parts of Karachi!

Karachiites woke up to an unexpected hailstorm and rain hitting various parts of the city in wee hours of Monday. This has happened in Karachi after four years, reported by Samaa News.

Heavy showers with hail pellets were witnessed in DHA, Clifton, I. I. Chundrigar Road, Shara-e-Faisal, Kharadar, Saddar, North Nazimabad and Malir, enveloping the city with chilly weather.

Late in the night, the sky erupted with lightning and the clouds roared to pour down. Of course,  breakdowns were reported in many parts of the metropolis.

Pools of water also accumulated on the streets and roads, affecting the movement of traffic.

More Rain Expected in Karachi

PMD has predicted that more rain will hit Karachi today and will continue for another day.  The weather in the city would be partly cloudy and the minimum temperature would range between 10 and 14 degrees Celsius.

Siberian winds would likely to continue in Karachi until afternoon and may increase up to 45km/h.
