PEMRA Bans ARY News’ Show ‘Off The Record’ for 60 Days

off the record banned

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued an official notice to ARY News in which they have banned the show ‘Off The Record’ hosted by Kashif Abbas for 60 days.

The reason behind the banning of the show is an episode which was aired in which Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) minister Faisal Vawda brought a boot to pull a stunt.

Vawda used a boot to heap scorn on the PPP and PML-N for voting in favor of the recently passed Army Act in parliament.

Politicians and leaders took it to social media and other channels to express their anger and concerns over this action. Even Vawda said that Prime Minister Imran Khan was “not happy” over his action.

Although he took responsibility, he told GEO TV anchor Hamid Mir that he will not apologize for it.

Meanwhile, PEMRA has issued the ban on the show for airing the episode. The notice reads that one of the panelists performed a “very unethical act“.

“Subsequently, arguments made by Mr. Vawda were not only extremely frivolous and derogatory but also an attempt to debase a state institution,” the notification dated Jan 15 read.

“Whereas, the role of programme host Mr. Kashif Abbasi was quite unprofessional who actually did not intervene or stopped (sic) that unethical act performed by one of the panelists during a live show rather took the entire incident casually and kept smiling/cherishing such occurrence,” it continued.

According to Pemra, Abbasi cannot conduct his show, appear on ARY News or any other television channel as a guest/analyst or expert for 60 days.

The year 2019 was a slow and super tough one for Pakistan’s automotive sector.

While sales took a huge hit, manufacturers also observed NPDs (non-production days) and had no choice but to close shop.

Nonetheless, even after the Rupee stabilized from 165 to 154, things started to look a bit shaky in the second half of the year.

Even though the manufacturers had to hike their prices, many managed to get some sales done.

The following chart shows the number of units sold in a full calendar year (not a fiscal year).

Make & Model Jan-Jun 2019 Jul-Dec 2019 Total Sales in 2019
Toyota Corolla 28,770 11,742 40,512

Suzuki Wagon R 16,533 4,546 21,079
Suzuki Cultus 12,006 6,609 18,615
Suzuki Ravi 9,428 4,262 13,690
Suzuki Bolan 9,497 2,790 12,287
Toyota Hilux 2,642 1,881 4,523
Honda BR-V 2,551 1,227 3,778
Suzuki Swift 2,541 1,136 3,677
Toyota Fortuner 1,356 552 1,908
Isuzu D-Max 400 264 664

Indus Motor Company’s Toyota Corolla dominated sales with over 28,000 units sold in the first 6 months, followed by another 11,742 units in the remaining 6 months.

Honda Civic and City remained the second-most sold car variants with over 17,000 units sold in the first half and over 6,900 units sold in the second half.

Although Suzuki had no Alto sales in the first half of the year, they managed to successfully sell 23,658 units in the second half, making it the third most sold variant in 2019.

On the other hand, Suzuki Swift, Toyota Fortuner, and Isuzu D-Max saw the least amount of sales with 3,677, 1,908 and 664 units sold respectively.

Fenty Beauty

Fenty Beauty is a name every die-hard makeup lover is familiar with. Another very familiar name is Netflix‘s popular series ‘You’.

But what happens when you mix Fenty Beauty and ‘You’ and add a bit of glam?

Fenty Beauty’s marketing team creatively used a popular dialogue from the famous show with a touch of creativity.

You’re trying out a different foundation…. it doesn’t match… you think blending it more will help but it isn’t… but you don’t know any better because you haven’t heard of Fenty Beauty…but it’s okay… we can fix that…we can fix…you

Vatika Demonstrates How Creativity and Strategy Leads to a Successful Campaign with #OilFirst

Vatika

Advertising campaigns when executed correctly demonstrate that there are creative minds in the marketing departments who focus on the fact that it is the strategy of campaigns that matter as they have a direct impact on the well-being of the product.

Advertising is often considered an expense and marketing may not be given the priority it deserves.

However, once in a while you come across campaigns that revive your belief in the industry.

Marketing – Strategy done right!

One of Pakistan’s most well-recognized hair care brands, Vatika, tried a new approach with their new campaign, OilFirst.

The marketing for the brand indicates that their campaigns are not mindlessly created but rather they strive to learn about the product as well as the habits of their potential consumers.

Knowing that the shampoo market of Pakistan is booming with numerous brands cutting into the budget pie, they chose to address the entire market through their hair oil rather than targeting a small market share

Who to target?

It is a fact that for most women oiling is a part of the hair care routine. Using that to the brand’s advantage, Vatika decided to target all shampoo consumers by using social media in its ‘Oil First, Then Shampoo’ campaign.

They instructed all consumers to post a picture of any shampoo ad on Instagram with the hashtags #oilfirst and #vatikafirst and they would thereby automatically register for a reward. The winners would be given natural hair care products along with a curling iron.

How to target?

Various influencers and celebrities took part in this campaign as well. They shared their stories of oil first, then shampoo where they stated that oiling before shampoo is the perfect way to get flawless hair as opposed to investing in a hefty amount of products and creams for the hair.

Having celebrities share their own hair problems personalized it for their fans showing them the human side in the life of celebrities who have the same struggles as them.

Measuring the effectiveness

The campaign was measured for its effective utilization based on a number of things. Firstly, they targeted the entire shampoo market, not as a rival rather as a complementary product that goes with every shampoo.

Secondly, they reached consumers of most shampoo brands as they got tagged in the shampoo ad posts. Thirdly, the huge fan following of the influencers and celebrities on Instagram and Facebook created a ripple effect in the campaign.

And lastly, let’s not forget the charm of winning a gift. The whole campaign was innovative and clever whilst delivering the required message and getting the most audience.

Vatika with OilFirst became the brand that demonstrated marketing needs to be creative and strategic rather than wasting budgets to contribute positively to the brand.

It’s effective as long as it’s strategic!

Microsoft pulls the Plug on Windows 7

Windows 7

For all the 90’s kids, Windows 7 is going down and Microsoft is sure about it. The extremely popular operating system was launched almost 11 years ago in the media capital of the world, New York City.

Windows Vista was released prior to Windows 7 that failed. Microsoft launched a suitable fix which became everyone’s favorite at the time introducing file libraries, taskbar, aero window management, and much more.

The popularity of Windows 7 grew to an extent that neither Windows 8 nor Windows 10 could compete. It took Windows 10 more than 4 years after its launch to reach the same market shares as Windows 7.

Netmarketshare shows that millions of PC’s across the world are still running Windows 7. To upgrade to Windows 10, Microsoft also allowed its users to upgrade for free which helped Windows to transfer users from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

Regardless, there are millions of PCs across the world still using Windows 7 as its operating system. On Wednesday, (15/1/2020) all computers using Windows 7 will receive a full-screen notification warning users that systems are now out of support.

PCs that still use Windows 7 will now be left with security vulnerabilities. Paying for extended security updates can be an expensive venture.

Extended security updates for Windows 7 Enterprise are approximately $25 per machine. It will double every year which is $50 per device in 2021 and again to $100 in 2022.

Extended security updates for windows 7 Pro start at $50 per machine. It will jump to $100 in 2021 and $200 in 2022.

The Future of Careers Defined for the Accountancy Profession

ACCA

In recent years the accountancy profession has suffered some reputational damage, however, ACCA’s latest report, Future-ready: accountancy careers in the 2020s indicates golden opportunities ahead.

The report by Jamie Lyon, Head of Business Management, ACCA, Professional Insights, reveals a significant number of trends signaling that the future can and should be bright for those whose careers are already in progress and for aspiring young professionals.

These trends range from the rise of data possibilities which will be become central to their role and linked to the adoption of automation technologies and will free up professional accountants to add more value, provide greater connectivity, highlighting the rising importance of inclusivity in the workplace, the changing nature of work, and evolving business models.

Now is the opportunity of a lifetime for the accountancy profession to build on its strong foundations and evolve: an opportunity to adapt and play its future part in building sustainable organizations for the long run.

It’s a great opportunity for countries like Pakistan to develop globally in-demand, future-ready accountancy talent to capitalize on our youth bulge. Timing is everything. – Sajjeed Aslam, head of ACCA Pakistan

The report brings together ACCA’s global research over the last three years, additional desktop research, including a member survey and interviews conducted with finance leaders, HR professionals and recruitment specialists in key markets to understand how careers may transform.

The report suggests there is a growing opportunity for the profession to contribute to building sustainable and purposeful organizations.  ‘This imperative is at the heart of the future profession,’ says Lyon. The report identifies a number of ‘career zones’ of opportunity where accountants can play a key role in supporting these ambitions. These include:

Assurance advocates. In fast-changing, digitally disrupted markets, organisations need to manage risk appropriately and ethically. Professional accountants can use digital tools and technologies to transform the risk, audit, compliance and internal control landscape to ensure effective stewardship of organisations and protect value.  They can also support responsible business practice, and drive transparency and trust in the organisation.

Business transformers. Business models will keep evolving in response to new technologies and changing market opportunities. Accountants can support businesses of all sizes in these efforts, as entrepreneurs or business advisers, or by taking a leading role in transforming smaller accountancy practices to bring new value to clients. Instead, they may be leading finance operational change programs or wider business transformation initiatives that are all designed to innovate and grow organisations.

Data navigators. Data is an enterprise asset that can be used in everything from building the business case for new investments to profiling competitive threats. Accountants can act as strategic advisors and business partners, helping to develop and apply rich data sets and use emerging analytical tools to provide real-time insights into how to create and sustain long-term value through better decision making.

Digital playmakers. Digital adoption is key to creating a competitive advantage through innovation. Accountants can act as technology evangelists, identifying the potential of robotics, machine learning and other emerging cognitive technologies to transform finance and business operations, or they may be working with technology teams to drive productivity and digital transformation initiatives.

Sustainability trailblazers. In today’s world, value is created by more than just financial capital, and intangible assets are a growing proportion of enterprise value. Accountants can help evolve frameworks that capture, measure and report on activities that truly drive value, providing more meaningful and transparent information about the organization’s performance.

Professional accountants could make an impact in more than one of these ‘zones of opportunity’ during their careers. Lyon envisages a future world of career transformation, where many individuals will have different types of roles during their working life, building more variable career paths rather than necessarily climbing the traditional vertical career ladder.

‘We will see more fluidity in terms of how people navigate across different types of activity,’ he says. ‘Roles are changing more quickly, and that is driving the need to develop new skills. That, in turn, is transforming the learning opportunities that are needed in the workplace.

In playing their part in building sustainable businesses, accountants will still need to apply the seven professional competencies – or quotients. These quotients include more typical competencies (technical and ethical, intelligence, digital, and experience) and the softer skills (creative, digital and emotional intelligence).

For example, the emotional intelligence quotient could become particularly important in the future, through assisting in understanding the viewpoints of wider stakeholders or advocating ethical approaches to the adoption of new technologies. ‘These professional quotients are so very relevant in this emerging world,’ Lyon says.

‘Accountants will need to apply a range of broad skills to have maximum impact in organizations. Those who succeed can look forward to a new world of opportunity and the chance to build brilliant careers.’

Mehwish Hayat Slams Oscar Nominations

Mehwish Hayat

Oscar Nominations for 2020 are out and no one is pleased with the nominations. Load weddings actress, Mehwish Hayat took it to twitter to express rage on Tuesday.

The Oscar nominations show that diversity is still a major issue and the film industry in the West has a long way to go to be fully inclusive,” Pakistani actress Mehwish Hayat said on Tuesday.

If no one else will do it, perhaps now is the time for us to step up and tell our stories to the world,” she added.

And Twitter agrees with her:

A fan quoted, “Exactly what Faran Tahir said, We have to tell our own stories, why do we depend on others.”

Another fan quoted, “Diversity should not be a reason to appreciate someone, one should have the talent n put in the hard work into it.”

Many have criticized the fact that female directors are completely shut out of the race for best directors as men only made it to the list. Other than that, black actors were greatly cut out too.

Mehwish Hayat has been vocal about social issues on social media quite frequently. She was honored with the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in 2019 by the Government of Pakistan.
