The Coronavirus pandemic has spread rapidly throughout the world. What began in China has now caused worldwide distress! In these trying times, it is difficult for brands to market their products and complete strategies are put into place to tackle the situation.

Dettol, however, has shined out from the rest after it introduced a ‘Dettol TikTok Challenge’ known as #HandWashChallenge in India to encourage more people to wash their hands in order to fight COVID-19. The challenge has become extremely popular in just four days, receiving a whopping 8.7 billion views.

Dettol’s TikTok challenge reads:

“Join hands with Dettol and take the #HandWashChallenge to spread awareness on how to wash hands!”

The challenge is fun to do and can be danced out as it has steps to wash the hands mentioned in the unique song. As seen below in renowned actress, Urvashi Rautela’s TikTok video, the green Dettol strip at the top displays the 4 Steps to wash the hands and challenge takers can dance accordingly. People can then share the challenge with their friends.

The brand has taken a simple WHO guideline and created a buzz around it through a clever marketing tactic. At the same time, the brand has played an enormous part in creating awareness on Handwashing that is a critical need at this time during the pandemic.

With over 8.7 billion views for this challenge, Dettol has surpassed E.l.f. Cosmetics that crossed 1.7 billion views in a week for its own challenge on TikTok last October. E.l.f was one of the first brands to create its own song for a challenge. In 4 days, other brands have received millions or hundreds of millions of views at the same time but no brand has received such a huge number to date.

The #HandWashChallenge has caught the eye of popular TikToker’s and various influencers each having a huge number of followers. This has in turn aided the challenge to become a trend in the past few days.

Students Distressed About CAIE’s As Cambridge Postpones Exams

Source: Raise Pakistan

Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE’s) examinations that are scheduled to be held in May/June have been postponed, the news was broken over Twitter on Tuesday evening by Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood.

He further mentioned that Cambridge would be announcing the new dates for the exams shortly. The decision was taken in a meeting to review the ongoing situation in Pakistan due to the threat from COVID-19. The meeting was held with provincial education ministers and senior education officials including Head of Cambridge Pakistan, Ms. Uzma Yusaf.

It has been clarified by the British Council and Cambridge that the examinations will be held as per schedule across the world and due to the situation in Pakistan, they will take place after the 1st of June.

Cambridge released a media statement on 17th March 2020 to shed some light on the situation at hand. The statement reads,

“We note that Pakistan’s government’s decision that examinations across the country will not take place until 1st June. This includes local and Cambridge examinations. Some Cambridge exams are scheduled to take place from 1 June, and as of now, we anticipate that they will run in Pakistan as planned. “

They further mentioned that the examination board is taking all the necessary actions to ensure the safety of schools and students and are working towards the smooth transition of students moving on to universities.

The news comes as a shock to the students who have been preparing to give their exams this year. Students are all under immense distress over the ongoing situation as there is great confusion on when they would be appearing for their papers.

It has been speculated that students could give the complete papers in Oct/Nov session of the Cambridge exams. However, they could also appear for some of the papers after 1st June.

A student of Lyceum College who is registered to appear for the May/June session was contacted and here’s what she had to say on the ongoing dilemma:

The school has not given us a final decision as the situation is still under review. Students are confused as to what is going to happen next.

As per her own schedule, she would choose to give the complete papers together in Oct/Nov instead of just a few in June. CIEs are scheduled to start in April but schools reopen on June 1st. Even if students opt for the papers in June, they may only be able to do parts of a paper as some subject examinations may not even be possible if they are scheduled by Cambridge before June.

It is important to keep in mind that due to the postponement of examinations to Oct/Nov, universities would also have to delay the admission process. In order to accommodate all the students, the Higher Education commission shared in the meeting that they would delay the universities’ admissions process to October.

However, the schools are in communication with CIE and still awaiting a final decision.

This is a developing story.

All across the globe, serious safety measures are being taken to stop the spread of coronavirus pandemic. As the numbers of cases are increasing on a daily basis, countries are taking preventing measures and announcing lockdowns.

Just like so, Pakistan is also taking such steps to help its people. From closing down schools, offices, restaurants and all other public places, people have now started taking this disease seriously.

imran khan taxes

Prime Minister Imran Khan addressed the nation on Tuesday regarding the Coronavirus Pandemic that is now spreading through Pakistan. Currently, the total number of people diagnosed with Coronavirus in Pakistan is 237.

PM Khan reassured the people in his speech and spoke about the measures to be taken in order to battle COVID-19. He further asked the nation to unite as one to fight the ‘war’ against coronavirus. He urged the people and added,

“We have to win this war as a nation”

Here are the Main Highlights from PM Imran Khan’s Speech:

1. Take Precautions Instead Of Panicking

The prime minister mentioned he was “seeing a state of panic” emerging among the people but he, instead, asked everyone to take precautions. He urged the public not to attend large gatherings of more than 40 people, avoid gatherings in closed rooms. He also asked all those arriving from abroad to practice self-isolation. Finally he asked everyone to take care of their personal hygiene and to avoid shaking hands.

PM Imran Khan also asked to lessen the burden on healthcare facilities and not rush to get tested if they experience a minor cold.

2. No Lockdown

Instead of following the western countries who have stronger economies than ours, he mentioned we would be taking different precautions. He further mentioned :

“Our economic situation is very fragile. We cannot lock down the country like these countries, if we lock down our cities, what will happen to the poor? Here, the people will die of hunger.”

Instead of a complete lockdown, public gatherings were banned and educational institutions were closed down in order to try to curb the spread of the virus.

3. National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)

PM Imran Khan spoke about the activation of the National Disaster Management Authority that will be working on COVID-19. The government has provided funds to the NDMA and tasked it with importing all the necessary medical equipment from abroad which also includes ventilators. Moreover, another core committee of health experts is monitoring other countries affected by the pandemic and their responses and then advising the Pakistani government.

4. Control on Inflation

The PM mentioned that various committees have been set up to fight coronavirus. One such authority will be keeping control on food inflation that could take place in the country due to the virus.

“I fear that an attempt will be made to cause inflation as was done by hoarding sugar and wheat stocks.”

Imran Khan said strict action would be taken by the government against people who will hoard the necessary food items. He further added,

“The state will act against you and punish you if somebody tries to take advantage of people’s difficulties again.”

5. Economic Crunch

Khan further predicted that the export industry such as textiles and businesses will face the biggest impact due to the virus. Businesses such as local shopping markets, wedding halls and malls will be closed down for the next two weeks and would be incurring great losses. Keeping all this in mind, he would be approaching the International Monetary Fund in order to give relief to various industries and exporters.

“Strong are those that stand by the weak” – Khaqan Sikander CEO Naya Jeevan & doctHERs

doctHERs

Every crisis is an opportunity. As Pakistan and the rest of the global community gear up its response to the Corona pandemic, we must look at ourselves and ask what we can contribute as businesses and individuals. We must also look closer at the role technology can play in our response at this crucial time.

In a country with a dearth of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals staring at a potential lockdown, the state, and the private sector must look into options for remote technology-based solutions available with telemedicine platforms across the country.

doctHERs is a pioneer in this domain and it has been advocating for the usage of telemedicine since its early introduction in Pakistan had successfully tested its implementation at scale over the last few years with over 1 million test cases just last year.

We are a company that primarily believes in standing for those who can’t for themselves. Therefore, we would like to especially highlight the plight of the blue-collar worker and marginalized members of our community at large during this pandemic.

At our sister concern, Naya Jeevan, an insurance brokerage firm, the majority of our portfolio consists of people who were never insured before. This is in line with our strategic mission to enlarge the total pool of insured lives which still lags at a meager 1% of the 220 million-strong population.

Our policyholders who are spread across the country include third party staff, distribution & sales reps, waiters, facilities management personnel, fuel station attendants, etc. We are happy to share that we are now providing cover for Corona related illnesses to all our policyholders in partnership with our underwriting partners.

If you are a business or an individual and would like to avail consultancy services (hygiene cards, compliance advisory on health & safety), tech-based awareness, health screenings, telemedicine services, employee outreach or a dedicated health helpline, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at covid19@docthers.com.

Together, we rise.

Pandemic VS Epidemic: Here’s Why COVID-19 Has Become A Global Concern

Source/ Washington Post

The new coronavirus disease, COVID-19, has moved from epidemic to pandemic. But, what does that mean?

We broke down the difference between the two so it’s easier for you to comprehend what the two are.

What is an epidemic?

An epidemic is an outbreak of a disease that circulates rapidly and affects numerous individuals at the same time.

An outbreak occurs when there is a sudden boost in the number of cases of a disease. It commonly interprets an increase that was not foreseen. An outbreak can occur in a community, geographical area or several countries.

Epidemic is often used extensively to describe any crisis that has grown out of control. During an epidemic, the disease is actively spreading.

A few examples of epidemics include:

1. The Zika virus outbreak that occurred in 2016 and 2017. Zika is spread by mosquitoes in tropical areas and in travelers returning from those areas.

2. The Ebola outbreak that occurred in 2014 to 2016 in West Africa was the largest outbreak of the disease, the World Health Organization reports.

3. The severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus that spread in Asia beginning in 2003 was an epidemic. SARS is part of the coronavirus family of diseases.

What is a Pandemic?

A pandemic is a type of epidemic that pertains to geographic spread and describes a disease that influences a whole country or the whole world.

An epidemic becomes a pandemic when it spreads over substantial geographical areas and affects a huge percent of the nation.

In short, a pandemic is an epidemic on a national or global level.

Below are the examples of pandemics:

1. The Spanish flu (H1N1 virus) of 1918. (Fans of the “Twilight” series may recall that Edward Cullen nearly died during the Spanish influenza pandemic.)

About 500 million people were sick from the Spanish flu. A total of 50 million people or more died from it around the globe.

2. In 1968, there was a pandemic caused by an influenza A (H3N2) virus that killed a million people worldwide, encompassing 100,000 in the U.S.

There have been additional flu pandemics in the past century, including the H1N1 pandemic in 2009. Although the WHO declared openly an end to the H1N1 pandemic in August 2010, the virus still circulates seasonally during flu season.

In this global pandemic, we request you to take drastic measures when comes down to your safety and take precautions.
