COVID-19: Australian Researchers Claim Two ‘Existing’ Drugs Could ‘Cure’ Patients

Source/ The Guardian

Over the last few months, the COVID-19 coronavirus has rapidly spread around the globe. Around 170,000 people across the world have now been infected with the coronavirus and over 6,500 have deceased.

From Italy to France and Spain to the UK, countries are now going in a lockdown due to the virus. It appears that the entire world is facing a recession and from airports to cinema halls and other public gatherings are discouraged.

After China managed to get a handle on its sudden outburst, other regions were blindsided by huge epidemics – nearly 25,000 people have fallen prey to the virus in Italy, around 14,000 in Iran, 8,000 in Spain and more than 5,000 apiece in Germany and France which a high number altogether.

However, the scientists from the University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research claim that the antidote for the virus is apparent, thanks to two existing drugs.

The drugs, called Chloroquine and Lopinavir, are presently used to treat malaria and HIV respectively but could be used to treat victims of coronavirus.

According to Professor David Paterson, who is overseeing the research, the drugs have already been exhibited to wipe out the virus in test tubes.

Common side effects of the cure may include muscle problems, loss of appetite and diarrhea.

Professor Paterson also explained positive experiences in the fight against coronavirus have already been recorded overseas, referring to China and Singapore.

His research team is optimistic and they can begin getting the drugs to sufferers in a very safe way on home soil.

In February 2020, Chinese medics inferred the drug may be safe and effective in dealing with coronavirus induced pneumonia.

Coronavirus: Pakistan & Global Airline Industry Face Massive Losses

The coronavirus pandemic has caused major travel bans across the world, as fewer people are willing to travel during these troubling times. Pakistan’s federal minister for aviation, Ghulam Sarwar Khan, said that the coronavirus has caused immense losses in the airline industry, including Pakistan International Airlines and the Civil Aviation Authority of the country taking a hit of over $15 million in losses.

Source: Google

Khan further added,

“During the last one month, PIA lost 1.2 billion rupees ($7.6 m) due to suspension of flights while the CAA has also faced a 1.2 billion rupees ($7.6 m) last week.”

In order to contain the virus and stop it from spreading many countries have closed their borders and stopped land and air travel with the most affected nations. Pakistan has already halted its flights to China, Iran, Qatar and Italy due to the coronavirus outbreak.

International Airlines Facing Losses:

Global airlines stand to lose $113 billion in sales if the pandemic continues according to the International Air Transport Association. IATA said airlines could lose 19% of their business if the virus isn’t contained soon.

Flybe Airlines

Europe’s largest airline suffered collapse amidst the coronavirus outbreak after travel declined massively. The airline has gone out of business after serving passengers for over 4 decades. The impact of the coronavirus on flight bookings was the last straw for the Europe based airline which operates almost 40% of UK domestic flights.

American Airlines (AAL)

The world’s largest airline is canceling international flights due to the drop in demand as mentioned by their CEO Doug Parker. The AAL will reduce its international capacity by 75% on a year over year basis and this will result in the airline parking almost its entire wide-body fleet. The domestic capacity for April will reduce by 20% and it forecasts the domestic capacity of May to fall by 30%.

United Airlines

United said it would suspend flights to London from Houston and Denver starting Monday. The airline expects to fly three daily flights to London and one daily flight to Dublin through April

Germany’s Lufthansa (DLAKF)

The airline has canceled over 7,100 flights for Europe in March, mostly those having routes within Germany or on the way to Italy. This is about 25% of its total capacity. The airline has also decided to ground 150 of its Boeing 770 Aircraft. The German flagship carrier is considering a request for state aid.

Delta Airlines

Delta Airlines Chief Executive, Ed Bastian spoke to the staff on Friday saying the firm would be cutting flights by 40% over the next few months and ground 300 aircraft. They would also reduce spending by $2 bn.

Norwegian Air

The Norwegian carrier is set to cancel 4,000 of its flights and will temporarily lay off about half of its staff due to the coronavirus outbreak. The airline mentions it has “weeks not months to avoid collapse”

KLM

The Dutch airline plans to slash uptown 2000 jobs, resulting in massive unemployment and cutting back staff hours by one-third. It will also be asking for government support to overcome this crisis.

Southwest Airlines

The American low-cost pioneer warned on Thursday of a $300m loss during the first quarter due to “a significant decline in customer demand, as well as an increase in trip cancellations.”

It has been seen that the airlines with the majority flights to the countries affected most by the outbreak have been facing the biggest losses. Shares have plummeted after flights have been discontinued and the rise of unemployed staff continues as the pandemic disrupts global travel on a massive scale.

Have you been affected by the airline industry slump? Let us know in the comments below.

Coronavirus Pandemic: Pakistan’s National Response Programme Vs Other Countries

Corona Virus

The novel Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19 has rapidly gripped the world with over 142,000 cases already diagnosed across the globe. The virus has now penetrated through our nation and 33 cases have been detected and they are being treated with the best medical help available.

The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) country representative in Pakistan, Dr. Palitha Gunarathna Mahipala has stated on Friday:

“Pakistan has one of the world’s best National response programmes against covid-19 PANDEMIC and it is being implemented very effectively.”

Dr. Mahipala spoke to media where he further urged the public to follow the precautionary and preventative measures to avoid contracting the viral disease.

The WHO representative inspected the isolation ward of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and said he was satisfied over the steps taken to deal with suspected patients. Moreover, he asked for more testing facilities in the public sector.

Dr. Mahipala also expressed satisfaction with all the arrangements for the screening of patients traveling to Pakistan from abroad at the Jinnah International Airport, Karachi.

He further added,

Pakistan has seven diagnostic labs which are capable of conducting 15,000 tests, but there is a need for more diagnostic facilities in case the number of suspected patients go up,”

He was also impressed with the authorities for setting up a mobile diagnostic facility at the Taftan border to test and diagnose suspected people coming from Iran.

Comparing Pakistan with Other Countries During the Pandemic

The situation in Italy and Iran is critical at the moment while there are a few countries amongst the same level as Pakistan such as Hungary, Georgia with 30 diagnosed cases and South Africa, Palestine with 38 cases. Pakistan stands at 33 cases as of 14th March 2020.

Pakistan is the only country amongst all of these that have 2 patients already recovered from the virus and have thankfully not faced any fatality due to the pandemic.

Hungarian educational institutes remain open while Pakistan has implemented preventative measures in order to curb the spread of the virus by closing down schools, colleges and universities.

Dr. Mahipala also mentioned that Pakistan was much better compared to other advanced health systems like South Korea and Italy had failed to contain Covid-19. He also added that Pakistani authorities took the virus’s threat seriously and this resulted in keeping it contained for a longer period while other countries were reporting its cases.

5 Lessons We Learnt From Drama Serial Alif!

Drama series Alif starring Hamza Ali Abbasi and Sajal Aly came to an end this weekend, and we cannot picture our Saturday nights without a fresh new episode on love and spirituality.

Source: Geo TV

There are very few stories that touch the soul, and Alif was one such drama that was packed with such emotions and feelings coupled with powerhouse performances and extra-ordinary impactful dialogues that will remain with the viewers for a long time to come. This drama was a much-needed breather from the same ‘extramarital affairs’ theme generally revolving around our Pakistani shows.

Alif was an eye-opening story that talked about the love between man and God and the road to spirituality that people such as Qalbe-e-Momin in today’s fast-paced world have wandered off from.

Things we have learned from this masterpiece drama Alif:

1. The love between a man and God is infinite!

The beautiful story of Qalb-e-Momin and Momina choosing to spend their lives in the bidding of the Almighty instead of getting married/being in a relationship with each other will make you reflect on how pure, and right this love with God truly is.

Source: Twitter

2. The path to spirituality can be chosen whenever one decides to

Hamza Abbasi playing Qalb-e-Momin, decided to walk on the way to spirituality after the loss of his grandfather. It is never too late to set foot towards spirituality, all that is needed is a firm decision, and you will reach your destination.

3. You don’t always need words to express how you feel!

The chemistry between the main leads Hamza and Sajal was off the charts in Alif. We could keep watching them looking at each other and talking through their eyes forever! This made us realize that sometimes our eyes can converse in a way that touches your soul.

4. Alif will make you reflect on your life!

After following Alif since it began, the impactful dialogues always kept lingering in our minds. This was a show that you would think about long after the episode was over.

The life choices made by the characters in the story and their relationship to something beyond the superficial world we live in will make you reflect on your own life and whether you’re on the right path or not.

5. This world will judge you for all that you do

The character played by Kubra Khan, Husn-e-Jahan, was deemed characterless; she was mistreated by her own family and then left by her husband too. However, she was loved by her creator, and only he knew about her purity, thus proving the Almighty does not judge you the way everyone else in this world does.

The story then showed the same world judging Momin when he began to work on spirituality; sponsors pulled away from his projects while the industry abandoned him. But because he kept on doing what he needed to, we witnessed how Allah accepted him and changed him for the better.

We will miss watching Alif as it was one spiritual drama that genuinely changed the way we think and made us reflect on different aspects of our life. What did you learn from Alif? Let us know in the comments below.
