Gilead Expands Global Supply Of Investigational Antiviral Remdesivir

“The company is also negotiating long-term voluntary licenses with drug makers in Pakistan to produce remdesivir”

Islamabad, May 6, 2020 – Since January, Gilead has worked with speed, care and diligence to prepare for the possibility that the company’s investigational antiviral remdesivir may be found effective against the virus that causes COVID-19. Recent clinical trial results and the decision by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration to issue an Emergency Use Authorization for remdesivir have highlighted the urgency of this work and the importance of planning for access to remdesivir globally.

Gilead’s overarching goal

Gilead’s overarching goal is to make remdesivir both accessible and affordable to governments and patients around the world, where authorized by regulatory authorities. Given the urgent needs of patients globally, the company is pursuing the following strategy to further accelerate and maximize access to remdesivir:

Gilead is in discussions with some of the world’s leading chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing companies about their ability, under voluntary licenses, to produce remdesivir for Europe, Asia and the developing world through at least 2022. The company is also negotiating long-term voluntary licenses with several generic drug makers in Pakistan and India to produce remdesivir for developing countries. Gilead will provide appropriate technology transfers to facilitate this production. Finally, the company is in active discussions with the Medicines Patent Pool, which Gilead has partnered with for many years, to license remdesivir for developing countries.

To further facilitate access in developing countries during this acute health crisis, Gilead is in advanced discussions with UNICEF to utilize their extensive experience providing medicines to low- and middle-income countries during emergency and humanitarian crises to deliver remdesivir using its well-established distribution networks.

Maximizing global supply

Close coordination of remdesivir manufacturing will be critical. This is why Gilead is working to build a consortium of manufacturing partners – to bring efforts together to help maximize global supply. Producing the drug requires scarce raw materials, with their own lengthy production time, and specialized manufacturing capabilities with limited global capacity. Any disruption to the supply chain impacting these scarce raw materials and other manufacturing inputs could reduce the amount of remdesivir produced and increase the time it takes to do so.

Gilead is grateful to all its colleagues at health agencies and organizations around the world for their valuable input and insight, which have helped guide the company’s strategy. The company looks forward to keeping its partners and the public updated as plans move forward.

450 Mosques Served Notices For Not Following The Guidelines

As the lockdown continues in Pakistan, people are now finding it difficult to sit at home and practice social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic. The number of confirmed coronavirus in Pakistan has almost crossed 23,000, with nearly 520 deaths.

Earlier, the decision to temporarily banning mosques for prayers to curb the spread of COVID-19 created significant debate among Islamic scholars. In some parts of the country, people tried to barge into the mosques despite the strict curfew on Fridays between 12 PM to 3 PM.

20-point guidelines for mosques

Just recently, the monitoring committee set up 20-point guidelines for mosques to monitor the implementation of the instructions in the Rawalpindi division. It was reported that the SOPs by 250 mosques were not being followed, which was said to be highly risky in terms of security and to curb the coronavirus spread.

More than 450 mosques in Rawalpindi have been served notices

On Tuesday, the Rawalpindi policed served notices to 450 mosques and imambargahs for not following the SOPs given. Moreover, the panel comprising religious scholars, traders, citizens, and government officials stated that several mosques in the Rawalpindi district were only partially following the SOPs.

According to a report by the Express Tribune, all the mosques and imambargahs in the Rawalpindi district have been split into A, B, and C categories. In the list of sensitive sites, 129 mosques are located in Chakwal district, the highest in the division, 61 mosques are located in Rawalpindi district, and 42 in Jhelum district. However, the lowest number of such mosques were found in the Attock district, with only 18.

Furthermore, 52 mosques in different parts of the division only allowed older people and children to pray Taraweeh. The report also stated that a total of 79 mosques in the division had poor or no security arrangements at all.

What are your thoughts on this? Also, do you think the lockdown should extend, or should the government ease the lockdown? What safety measures should the government take if they reduce the lockdown? Let us know in the comments below.

6th May 2020: Islamabad airport turned into a wreck once again due to heavy rainfall. The region has been receiving severe rain, especially on Sunday and Monday, which caused severe damage to the building.

The building has recently been inaugurated and previously been affected by the heavy rainfall. Islamabad airport is by far the most advanced airport in Pakistan, as many think it is a technological marvel and advanced.

The building was equipped for over Rs. One hundred billion, which is instead an excruciating amount for an underdeveloped country. Many have the opinion that the investment was made by the government rapidly to gain political mileage.

Over the weekend, heavy rains in the twin cities flooded not only the Islamabad airport but also many low-lying areas. The storm shattered windowpanes in the domestic departure lounge and also affected various spots in the sealing.

On the first day of operations, passengers showed the world that we might not be deserving of such high priced projects, with littering, vandalism, and more.

New Islamabad Airport Pictures Show Remorseful State of Project Worth Billions

This time around, mother nature showed all of Pakistan that the new airport might just be a resource which had not been thought through twice.

Twitter User Ali Arif shared a video about how the airport was being flooded with rainwater, and nothing can be done.

We can see powerful winds blow and rain covering the floors, filling each level with the water. There seems to be no sewage system. Nonetheless, the ceiling was not prepared for such an event.

Truly it feels awful to know that a project built with high hopes, many resources, and a lot of time has ended up in such a condition within just 4 weeks of opening doors. Of this is the current state of the airport, we cannot even anticipate what the condition might be like another month down the road.

Here is Mashael Kamran’s poem, called “Angels”. The poem was picked up by Rafael Serrallet, a famous Spanish guitarist:

Those noble hands stopped working

A heart of a savior is now at rest

A death has prevailed, God took away another angel

Days will never be the same

Your selfless body will never walk again

And the tears of grief will take a while to dry

Oh dear angel, but let’s not forget, you are truly alive

As a guardian of humanity, you are an endless light

your spirit sings in the soul of many

So stretch your wings and fly!”

COVID-19: Amazon VP Quits After Company Starts Crackdown Against Employees!

Amazon VP Quits
Credits: inews.co.uk

Tim Bray, Amazon VP quit his job “in dismay” after the e-commerce giant started a crackdown against its employees who criticized the giant over its coronavirus safety measures.

The former VP said that the firing of its employees is “evidence of a vein of toxicity running through the company culture.”

Amazon has previously defended itself; workers have stated that Amazon has not done enough to keep workers safe, but this time the titan refused to comment.

Reportedly, it faces a possible investigation of worker rights violations in New York, where the company fired the organizer of a small protest about safety conditions at a warehouse.

It is also important to mention here that Amazon is one of the businesses which has been flourishing during the novel coronavirus lockdown as individuals are opting for online shopping rather than physical purchasing.

Mr. Bray also shared in his statement that Amazon has fired office staff who had been organizing another protest and had spoken out against the company on climate issues.

“At that point, I snapped,” he wrote. “That done, remaining an Amazon [vice-president] would have meant, in effect, signing off on actions I despised. So I resigned,” he wrote.

“What with big-tech salaries and share vestings, this will probably cost me over a million (pre-tax) dollars, not to mention the best job I’ve ever had, working with excellent people. So I’m pretty blue,” he wrote.

However, he also said: “Firing whistleblowers isn’t just a side-effect of macroeconomic forces, nor is it intrinsic to the function of free markets.

“It’s evidence of a vein of toxicity running through the company culture. I choose neither to serve nor drink that poison.”

Forget Oil, Data Becomes World’s Most Valuable Resource!

Credits: David Parkins

For the first time in history, oil is no longer the most sought after commodity in the world. Nowadays, the new commodity which has big firms and giants spending lots and lots of money is none other than data!

Data is so precious that individuals will do anything to keep it protected and stop it from being violated. In contrast, companies are willing to pay massive amounts of cash just to get their hands on the data sets.

To be honest, these companies are minting money from data collected from individuals. Titans like Alphabet, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, and Amazon thrive and earn massive profits.

Reportedly,  they collectively racked up over $25bn in net profit in the first quarter of 2017! Moreover, Amazon captures half of all dollars spent online in America. Google and Facebook accounted for almost all the revenue growth in digital advertising in America last year.

In this time and age, it has become tough, more like next to impossible to live without using their services. Can you imagine life without Google search? How about life without Facebook? No more online shopping without Amazon?

However, if you put your mind into it, not all data sets make one vulnerable and victims of data theft. Data sets released by hospitals and research centers can help save lives and make predictions that may just help save the human race!

Now that we understand that data is an asset in this digital age, the question is, how much is it worth?

It pays a lot. However, while it does churn a handsome amount, at the same time, it puts many at risk as when the data is hacked, it is straightforward to retrieve almost everything about a person.

This includes their residential address, email IDs, bank account numbers and PINs, Social Security Numbers, and more. This means individuals are prone to identity theft if the data gets in the hands of the wrong people!

This is why a proper regulation needs to be put in place so that data is not stolen or used for theft.

We have now to see how great companies plan to use the data for the interest of the people.

What do you think they will do with the information? Share your thoughts with us below.

“18M Pakistanis Might Lose Their Jobs During the Lockdown Due to Coronavirus”- Asad Umar

Virus

On Sunday, Planning, and development minister, Asad Umar, feared that around 18 million people might as well lose their jobs during the lockdown. The restriction was imposed to curb the virus in the country but comes with significant economic consequences.

As per a research carried out by the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE),  during a news conference at the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), Asad announced that “between 20 million to 70 million could fall below the poverty line, while 18 million people could also lose jobs owing to the virus.”

Umar emphasized during the conference that an average of 24 people were dying every day for the last six days due to Covid-19 in the country, and if the situation remained the same, then there would be 720 deaths each month.

“Around 4,000 people die in road accidents in the country every month, but we still allow cars on roads, because their necessity is greater than the danger of those accidents,” he maintained.

“If we focus on bringing Covid-19 deaths to zero, we must realize that we cope with the measures it would be needed for doing that,” he added.
