The Future of Careers Defined for the Accountancy Profession

ACCA

In recent years the accountancy profession has suffered some reputational damage, however, ACCA’s latest report, Future-ready: accountancy careers in the 2020s indicates golden opportunities ahead.

The report by Jamie Lyon, Head of Business Management, ACCA, Professional Insights, reveals a significant number of trends signaling that the future can and should be bright for those whose careers are already in progress and for aspiring young professionals.

These trends range from the rise of data possibilities which will be become central to their role and linked to the adoption of automation technologies and will free up professional accountants to add more value, provide greater connectivity, highlighting the rising importance of inclusivity in the workplace, the changing nature of work, and evolving business models.

Now is the opportunity of a lifetime for the accountancy profession to build on its strong foundations and evolve: an opportunity to adapt and play its future part in building sustainable organizations for the long run.

It’s a great opportunity for countries like Pakistan to develop globally in-demand, future-ready accountancy talent to capitalize on our youth bulge. Timing is everything. – Sajjeed Aslam, head of ACCA Pakistan

The report brings together ACCA’s global research over the last three years, additional desktop research, including a member survey and interviews conducted with finance leaders, HR professionals and recruitment specialists in key markets to understand how careers may transform.

The report suggests there is a growing opportunity for the profession to contribute to building sustainable and purposeful organizations.  ‘This imperative is at the heart of the future profession,’ says Lyon. The report identifies a number of ‘career zones’ of opportunity where accountants can play a key role in supporting these ambitions. These include:

Assurance advocates. In fast-changing, digitally disrupted markets, organisations need to manage risk appropriately and ethically. Professional accountants can use digital tools and technologies to transform the risk, audit, compliance and internal control landscape to ensure effective stewardship of organisations and protect value.  They can also support responsible business practice, and drive transparency and trust in the organisation.

Business transformers. Business models will keep evolving in response to new technologies and changing market opportunities. Accountants can support businesses of all sizes in these efforts, as entrepreneurs or business advisers, or by taking a leading role in transforming smaller accountancy practices to bring new value to clients. Instead, they may be leading finance operational change programs or wider business transformation initiatives that are all designed to innovate and grow organisations.

Data navigators. Data is an enterprise asset that can be used in everything from building the business case for new investments to profiling competitive threats. Accountants can act as strategic advisors and business partners, helping to develop and apply rich data sets and use emerging analytical tools to provide real-time insights into how to create and sustain long-term value through better decision making.

Digital playmakers. Digital adoption is key to creating a competitive advantage through innovation. Accountants can act as technology evangelists, identifying the potential of robotics, machine learning and other emerging cognitive technologies to transform finance and business operations, or they may be working with technology teams to drive productivity and digital transformation initiatives.

Sustainability trailblazers. In today’s world, value is created by more than just financial capital, and intangible assets are a growing proportion of enterprise value. Accountants can help evolve frameworks that capture, measure and report on activities that truly drive value, providing more meaningful and transparent information about the organization’s performance.

Professional accountants could make an impact in more than one of these ‘zones of opportunity’ during their careers. Lyon envisages a future world of career transformation, where many individuals will have different types of roles during their working life, building more variable career paths rather than necessarily climbing the traditional vertical career ladder.

‘We will see more fluidity in terms of how people navigate across different types of activity,’ he says. ‘Roles are changing more quickly, and that is driving the need to develop new skills. That, in turn, is transforming the learning opportunities that are needed in the workplace.

In playing their part in building sustainable businesses, accountants will still need to apply the seven professional competencies – or quotients. These quotients include more typical competencies (technical and ethical, intelligence, digital, and experience) and the softer skills (creative, digital and emotional intelligence).

For example, the emotional intelligence quotient could become particularly important in the future, through assisting in understanding the viewpoints of wider stakeholders or advocating ethical approaches to the adoption of new technologies. ‘These professional quotients are so very relevant in this emerging world,’ Lyon says.

‘Accountants will need to apply a range of broad skills to have maximum impact in organizations. Those who succeed can look forward to a new world of opportunity and the chance to build brilliant careers.’

Former Google Executive Aims to Unlock Pakistan’s Digital Future with ‘Digital Pakistan’ Initiative

Haier Becomes the Only Manufacturer in Pakistan with an Internationally Accredited HNR Air Conditioning Testing Lab!

Haier

Haier Pakistan’s air conditioning division was established in 2002 and soon Haier air conditioner became a prestigious brand in the minds of Pakistani consumers.

With the greatest market-share in Pakistan, Haier has been leading the Pakistani air conditioning market for the last 10 years.

For many years, there had been no national standard for air conditioning in Pakistan. The quality of products in the market is not good and some small scale local manufacturers advertise false information without any verification from any certified laboratory.

In 2017 the National Energy Efficiency Standards Committee and Air Conditioning Certification Committee were set up, to develop and implement energy labeling (Energy efficiency) standards.

Haier established its first air enthalpy difference lab in 2002 for testing of air conditioner products at different conditions, which was the first lab developed and still is the only air conditioner testing lab available in Pakistan.

In 2015 Haier’s accreditation team worked tirelessly for 2 years to get the lab certified by PNAC (Pakistan National Accreditation Council).

In 2019 a formal application was forwarded to PNAC to check the compliance of the lab management system (ISO 17025:2017) which after pre-assessment and complete assessment issued the certification in November 2019.

After this certification, Haier is actively taking the initiative to participate in standards development. Now Haier is also authorized to provide testing services for external customers (other brands), as they have no such facility.

The certified air enthalpy difference lab has testing capabilities to assess a wide range of commercial air conditioners and split air conditioners and test their cooling capacity, heat capacity and air volume.

The products are checked and tested according to the standard (ISO 5151) to ensure that products manufactured are qualified according to international standards.

The accreditation of Haier’s HNR AC Testing Lab proves that Haier is committed to not just international quality manufacturing, but also international quality testing to ensure that its products can stand equal as compared with air conditioners manufactured anywhere in the world.

Lawsuit Claims Apple Watch Tech Might Have Been Stolen by Apple!

Apple Watch

For all the Apple watch fans, we have some upsetting news for you. The joy you get after wearing an Apple watch might just fade from here now onwards, after knowing that Apple might as well have stolen the Tech from Masimo and Cercacor.

It is shocking for Apple fans around the globe that an American company has sued the California tech giant for stealing its supposedly secret technology for use.

It appears that the California tech giant offered a partnership to Masimo with it, but later changed its mind over the deal and instead hired its own employees.

Masimo, an American manufacturing company monitoring technology has partnered with subsidiary company Cercacor Laboratories and filed a lawsuit against the California tech giant.

Apple Watch

Apple has used its technology to resolve performance issues in the Apple Watch, claims  Masimo and Cercacor. Other than that, Apple Watch 4 and Apple Watch 5 are highlighted as the main devices that fall under the patent infringement.

These accusations are shocking in nature but Apple and all parties involved will face serious consequences, if proven guilty. However, there has been no official statement made by Apple.

These accusations seem to be surfacing on the internet but there are no official statements made by any of the opposing parties either. The companies, however, have made it clear that they require Apple to use their technology any further, effective immediately.

Former Google Executive Aims to Unlock Pakistan’s Digital Future with ‘Digital Pakistan’ Initiative

digital pakistan

Tania Aidrus, the former Google executive and MIT professional heading the ‘Digital Pakistan’ initiative recently launched by Prime Minister Imran Khan, has described it as having ‘an overarching vision that aims to unlock the potential of Pakistan’s digital future’.

She opens up about her views on the initiative and her plans for it in an exclusive interview carried in the January 2020 issue of Monthly SouthAsia.

Tania says Pakistan must work towards a future in which technology touches and enriches the life of every citizen, thereby driving higher productivity and giving the people greater control by unleashing their entrepreneurial potential and propelling Pakistan forward towards a secure economic future.

Tania Aidrus is an ex-Google executive. She has been made in charge of the Prime Minister’s Digital Pakistan initiative which is expected to herald a technologically-driven environment for the tech-savvy youth of Pakistan.

Talking about the start-up environment in the country, Tania says she strongly believes that Pakistan’s startup ecosystem is poised for take-off as ‘the middle class is growing and is driving growth in consumer spending’.

She states there are 70 million broadband internet users in the country besides a mostly young and dynamic population and incredible talent. In her opinion, it is only a matter of time when a few big successes in Pakistan will suddenly bring regional and global attention to the massive opportunity that exists in the country.

Asked how can this be a more structured, coherent and measurable pathway, Tania clarifies that like most other ambitious transformations, what Pakistan needs is a clear, comprehensive and articulate strategy to determine where it wants to go in the long term.

In Tania’s view, the Digital Pakistan initiative will make a marked contribution to the job market as the next billion-dollar companies will come from IT and hundreds of thousands of new jobs will be created.

She assures that these jobs will be in multiple sectors and functions and will offer the single biggest opportunity to Pakistan to help it bridge the unemployment gap.

Making her views about the blocks in the way of entrepreneurial evolution in the IT sector in Pakistan known, she says things should be made easier for tech startups to operate easily in the country.

In Pakistan’s future tech development, Tania pins her hopes on the private sector and adds that the government could contribute by creating an enabling environment for the new entrants.

‘Mere Paas Tum Ho’ Writer Khalil-ur-Rehman Slammed for Second Marriage

Khalil-ur-rehman

Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar has faced immense backlash since the news of his second marriage broke. It has been confirmed by his own family during an interview with a famous journalist Sohail Warraich. His recent work, Mere Pass tum ho, currently on- air on ARY Digital has earned its reputation for portraying women in our society. The writer has also come under the limelight not just because of his remarkable work but also his misogynist remarks.

During a guest appearance on the show, Aik Din Geo Kay Sath, Khalil-ur-Rehman got candid with his first wife, Rubi Naz, and family. His first wife seemingly had no complaints regarding her husband.

Upon investigating about his second marriage, Rubi responded, “Yeh 24 hours hamaray sath hi hotay hain, beech main ghanta do ghanta jatay hain. (He is with us all day, but he does leave us for an hour or two during the day).”

The family wasn’t directly confirming the news at the beginning of the interview but rather covering it. Khalil’s daughter, however, spoke up and added fuel to fire. She said, “Beech main ghaib ho jatay hain (He usually disappears during the day).”

Khalil’s fans are now calling him out as a hypocrite and also labeling the writer as a flirt. His wife during the interview also added, “Aurton k har waqt call aati hai, aur kuch yeh bhi dil phaink hain (Women call him all the time, and he himself is a flirt too.)”

The writer was earlier called out for his misogynistic remarks regarding equality during an interview with Entertainment Pakistan. While speaking to the interviewer, he said, “You can’t find a bigger feminist in Pakistan than me.”

The interviewer further questioned if he has heard of five women abducting a man to which his response was, “If women want equality, they need to do the same things men are doing” which was “Go and rob a bus, abduct a man and gang-rape him. Only then I would know there is equality.”

Many media platforms report that his second wife is Eshal Fayyaz. However, nothing has been confirmed by the writer himself.

Recently, the writer broke silence over Facebook, denied allegations of his second marriage with actress Eshal Fayyaz. He took it to his official page and wrote, “I strongly condemn and reject absurd and baseless news of my marriage with the heroine of my film Kaaf Kangna.

“It is so shameless to peep into the personal lives of artists like us and destroy our images.” He further added, “I solemnly declare nothing of the sort ever happened between me and the heroine and we were just working together to complete the project in quite a professional way.”

On Saturday, Kaaf Kangna’s actress, Eshal Fayyaz also cleared on social media regarding the rumor of her marriage with the writer. She said, “There is no truth in rumours that are doing the rounds since yesterday. I haven’t got married to anyone, I am very much single.”

She further added, “My relationship with Khalil ur Rehman Qamar is that of one between an actor and a director, nothing more than that.”
