We enjoy spicy, delicious, fresh hot dishes and crave for street food delights such as Pani puri and chaat.

However, not all dishes are appealing! Some of them will blow you off your feet the wrong way and will leave you in shock!

Do you recall the feeling you feel when you want to hurl after you smell rotten egg? Imagine eating one, which is 100 years old! Just kidding! The century-old egg is a dish from China. It is stored in a mixture of quicklime, ask and clay for a few months. This makes the yolk turn dark green even black at times while the whites turn brown. People say it smells of ammonia!

As you’ve guessed by its name, the Wasp Crackers are chocolate chip cookies like doughs filled with the main ingredients, wasps! However, the digger wasps have a nasty sting, so if you ever think about trying one, all the best to your tongue!

If you thought the first two items were disgusting, try the Witchetty grub! Sounds like an exclusive witch, right? The larva can be eaten raw or cooked, as per preference. The skin becomes crispy like a roasted chicken, while the consistency reminds one of the scrambled eggs. In case if you were wondering, the main ingredient of the dish is large, white, wood-eating larvae of several months!

Escargots à la Bourguignonne is just another fancy name for snails! Well, these snails are cooked in white wine, garlic, parsley and butter in their shells. According to those who have tried this dish, its consistency is similar to rubbery clams. PS. If you ever travel to Hong Kong, you can buy the cheap salt version of the same dish!

Stink bugs are said to be the secret ingredient of many dishes to give them a crunch, sort of like an apple. They are prepared through boiling, after which they release pheromones in an attempt to survive. It stings the eyes like onions, but it is what it is.

6. Marmite/Vegemite – Australia/UK/New Zealand

Marmite is yeast extract, which is a by-product of brewing beer. It is slurry and is found at the bottom of barrels. It looks like a sticky brown paste similar to melted brown sugar with a salty flavor. It is usually spread on toast or is eaten with some cheese.

HEC In Loss Of Rs. 1 Billion: PhD Scholars From KP Still Abroad!

Students from Pakistan who secured the Higher Education Commission (HEC) scholarships and went abroad have not returned to Pakistan upon completing their projects. A total of 68 PhD scholars from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are still abroad. In the past ten years, 734 students/scholars from KP went abroad. Out of that, only 550 returned after attaining degrees, 42 either failed or just returned, while 74 are still studying.

The story behind scholarships

Some Pakistani students do end up not returning or do not complete their studies. And they don’t feel the responsibility to either, considering they are not the ones paying. But let’s evaluate what really happens when you secure the HEC scholarship.

When you secure the HEC scholarship, it’s a deal between the university and HEC to let the Pakistanis study abroad. At the end of the degree, however much HEC has spent on you, you are supposed to return that by working in Pakistan for a few years.

According to the rules of HEC, each of the people in question has to return immediately upon completion of their program from abroad and serve Pakistan for five years minimum.

But when you do not return and give back to the country what you gained from abroad or when you do not return, HEC incurs a loss. And the people get marked defaulters.

The Defaulters

Due to the 68 PhD scholars this year, HEC is in a loss for PKR 1 billion. And they released this information due to the KP Right to Access to Information Act, 2013.

HEC will be going to court to deal with the whole situation and recover their losses. According to the rulebook, HEC can charge a 25% penalty on such cases, so they are doing just that and have taken the matter up with the designated authorities, including FIA, NADRA, Foreign Office, etc.

Considering most PhD applications are of university faculty members, they are the ones who owe HEC quite a lot of money. Let’s break down the official numbers for these defaulters.

  • Rs. 136 million by ten faculty members of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University Peshawar
  • Rs. 20 million by 2 of Khyber Medical University
  • Rs. 20 million by 2 of Islamia College University
  • Rs. 96 million by 17 of Kohat University of Science and Technology
  • Rs. 10 million by 5 of University of Engineering
  • Rs 28.3 million by 5 of Malakand University

Other than these people, others owe HEC millions. 2 of them belong to  Shaheed Benazir University, Upper Dir. 11 of them are from Hazara University; 6 are from the Institute of Management Sciences; 10 from University of Peshawar, among others.

Tesla is one of the leading names in the automobile industry. The Model S is the baseband version of the vehicles, and it alone deserves recognition too. 4 Things To Do Before You Quit Your Job For Good!

First of all, don’t quit your job just because you feel like it or that things become hard for you. But of course, if it fits your plan or you just do not want to put up with it anymore and have to quit, well, then here are four things that you need to do before you submit that resignation letter.

1. Clear your tasks

You do start with a job description (JD), but it keeps changing, evolving. Most of the time, it’s not even official. So when you are planning to quit, log all the tasks down and document them. Once you have the list, have it approved with your manager/supervisor. Sometimes it helps raise your image; when the supervisor learns that exactly how many tasks you were currently handling, which were not even in your JD, they appreciate your efforts.

2. Calculate your dues

Calculate your dues, exactly how much your company needs to pay you. There are 2 to 3 components that need to be cleared, and if you don’t clear it with the HR, they might forget, and you would lose out on a significant chunk of what is truly yours. The examples of those components can be your paid leaves. Some companies give cash compensation if you have not taken vacations.

3. The Succession process

Make the succession process easy for your successor so that the company sees that it won’t be affected much. Otherwise, what happens is that the managers panic and try to negotiate with you on the pay. And aren’t we all humans? If the offer is too enticing, you might just end up staying. This is never the right choice. Why? After the initial panic, the managers start thinking that you forced their hand, and they WILL resent you. Be prepared for a ton of work that will await.

4. Plan out your future right after you quit

Do not quit if you have not planned for the immediate future. If you quit thinking that you will take a break before you apply somewhere, that is the worst thing you will be doing. If you take a break, primarily if you work in software or medical-related fields, companies will not hire you when you do get to apply for a job. They will think that you have lost touch as these fields require you to be up to date with all the new tools.

The Truth Behind Halal & Haram Edibles In Pakistan

There are a number of brands that faced defamation and scrutiny due to the sensitivity of the halal/haram issue in Pakistan. Let’s take a look at how many of these cases were blown out of proportion and whether the ingredients in these food items were, in fact, proved to be haram:

Oreo cookies

Oreos are some of the most favorite tea-time biscuits of Pakistanis, whether they’re imported or local. They’re often sold out at grocery stores like AlFatah, but that doesn’t stop us from making trips and hoarding them when they become available again.

Recently, a rumor circulated that Oreo cookies contained alcohol in them.

Since they were imported to the UAE, the packaging was also translated to Arabic. The ingredient ‘chocolate liquor’ actually meant cocoa paste but it was translated to chocolate alcohol, raising concerns surrounding the consumption of Oreo biscuits in many Muslim countries including Pakistan.

However, the government of Dubai itself clarified the issue, releasing an official statement on their Instagram page:

“Dubai Municipality denies the rumor of the Oreo chocolate contains alcohol. The Municipality asserts that the product in the local markets is alcohol-free, but there was a mistake translating the food card into Arabic.”

The Reality of Lays Chips Controversy

This is a rumor that has been circulating for quite some time now.

Many sources speculated whether Lays is haram. However, this misconception stemmed from the fact that the brand used ‘E 631’ – a sodium salt which is present in fish, yeast extract and pig meat.

What is E631 in Lays chips?

Pepsi Co, the parent brand of Lays chips clarified that the E631 in lays was 100% halal, which was backed by SANHA, the halal food certification agency of Pakistan – leaving no doubts for consumers.

With that being said, it is understandable to see why consumers can be wary of food items, but it is also important to research ingredients from credible sources before believing false claims.

HEC e-portal Experiences Major Glitches – When Will It Be Fixed?

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) established its e-portal to simplify the processes a Pakistani student has to go through. Register through your CNIC, and you can have your degrees attested, or you can apply for research grants on your ongoing or upcoming researches. You can also apply for local and foreign scholarships. Foreign scholarships are vast. You can find commonwealth scholarships, Chinese, Hungarian, and many more.

But while the portal’s idea is fantastic, many problems exist with it. And considering we come from a nation where we prefer doing work on-site, not trusting technology, the e-portal glitches fuel that myth. Moreover, now that the e-portal is in place, HEC has transferred all its services to the portal.

So, if you cannot resolve the glitches of the portal, you cannot avail of the services HEC offers. And this puts the students in a troubling spot. But guess what, this is not a recent issue. The problems with HEC e-portal go back at least 3 to 4 years.

Even now, the e-portal repeatedly throws problems towards the users. And the students have to deal with them. And this sucks if you have a looming deadline for a scholarship application. So the aspiring candidates are left with no choice but to wait for another year for the process to begin yet again. One whole year wasted.

Types of problems

It seems just like elections where even dead people’s CNIC is seen voting, HEC e-portal faces similar phenomenon, not the same though. I mean not precisely dead people, but the first time users, upon registering, find their CNIC already registered.

We have already mentioned that HEC has wholly transferred all the services to the e-portal, so those in dire need of degree attestation right away experience difficulties if the server starts giving errors. When students are already worried about their education issues, they have to deal with ‘500 server error’ as well.

The e-portal keeps locking itself as well. And considering they already have server issues, logging back in an ordeal in itself.

But let’s think about who this whole list of problems is affecting. It is financially needy who need the government’s support to continue or finish their studies. One example of a scholarship program in the current case is the Ehsaas Undergraduate Scholarship. The local scholarship program is designed to help people from lower SECs to get an education. However, due to the e-portal problems, most of them fail to do so. Now, they can complain and be issued with a ticket number, and HEC gets back to them. But what’s the point if the deadlines have passed?

Meanwhile, those who come from wealthy backgrounds, as this Twitter user presumes, are getting through it without difficulty because they do not face the same issues with the portal as the financially underprivileged people face.

So this leaves us with the question: When will these problems get resolved?
