SECP Issues Public Warning Over a Company Advertising Fake Schemes!

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) issued a notice on Thursday to warn the general public.

The warning was in regards to trusting schemes, job opportunities, programs, and investment options offered by unofficial media channels.

The Press Release further states that the commission has taken in to notice that M/s Galaxy Typing Jobs Limited was involved in illegal activities.

The company was taking unauthorized deposits under the promises of launching different investment programs through its website. In return, it was offering heavy incentives to all investors.

The company was also found committing fraud by claiming that the website is SECP approved. On the other hand, SECP clarified that just because companies are registered with SECP, it does not mean they will not commit illegal activities and that does not mean they have the authority to take deposits from the general public.

SECP has declared such business activities as unauthorized and unlawful in Pakistan and has also initiated action against the criminals.

The price of gold reached an all time high of Rs 80,500 per tola at the end of June 2019, with an increase of Rs 1300.

There seems to be no stopping when it comes to the prices of gold, silver, and gemstones these days. As they continue to become more unaffordable by the day, a report by geo, based on a survey conducted in Karachi tells us that there is someone who is benefiting from the inflation: the imitation jewelry in Pakistan.

The survey revealed that price-conscious female consumers this season are becoming increasingly inclined towards imitation jewelry and moving away from real gold.

When asked for insights behind this shift, here is what a Karachi-based goldsmith said:

“The unexpected hike in gold prices has affected our customers’ purchasing power”

Needless to say, artificial jewelry also gives women more options to choose from and in much less prices.

When women come looking for jewelry to go with their wedding outfits, for instance, a real gold jewelry set can cost them a minimum of 100,000 PKR. On the other hand, an artificial or even gold plated set of jewelry would cost them as less as 3 or 4 thousand rupees.

Moreover, these items are more practical, can be worn without fretting about getting robbed, and can be polished when they start to fade to regain their shine.

Emirates NBD & Dubai Police’s Rap Song on Online Bank Fraud Goes Viral on Social Media!

The number of cybercrime the global banking industry faces has been increasing in recent years and so Dubai Police has joined forces with Emirates NBD to launch a #SecureYourAccount campaign that is aimed at promoting public awareness on cybersecurity.

Combining humour and advice, Dubai police in collaboration with Emirates NBD produced a rap song about bank fraud. The song is a parody of ‘It Wasn’t Me’, the popular hit song by Jamaican rapper Shaggy.

The catchy rap tune sums up the conversation between a banker and its client who was tricked online.

The two-minute long video begins with him calling the bank insisting that his entire account was wiped out after receiving an email that asked him to send his bank details and password to resolve a payment issue.

The client said that the scammer messaged him on WhatsApp, called him in the shower and also told him that he won the lottery. However, the bank manager, unaware of the fraud repeatedly says “It wasn’t me!”

 “All the things a bank won’t ask, but a fraudster will! Our latest film “It Wasn’t Me”, in collaboration with @emiratesnbd_ae, gives you the do’s and don’ts of keeping your identity and account secure at all times…,” the caption stated.

Banks would never call or email and ask their customers to reveal personal details such as online or mobile banking credentials and password, card PIN or the three-digit CVV number.

Cybercrime is a global threat that demands collective attention. Accumulating positive response, the video has been labeled informative and entertaining.

Hidden WhatsApp Malware Compromises 25 Million Android Phones!

More than 25 million Android phones have been compromised after a hidden WhatsApp Malware was discovered. Dubbed as Agent Smith, this malware replicates authentic apps with fake apps.

These applications serve as advertisements, according to security researchers. Majority of the victims, over 15 million, were identified from India who became victims to the malware.

Reportedly, the malware spread to these phones through a third-party app store called 9apps.com that is owned by Alibaba and users outside the US and Europe.

When users download applications from the particular store, the malware also gets downloaded into the handset and starts infecting the system. The app disguises itself as a tool.

Biometric Verification NOT Required for Senior Citizens Anymore – Govt of Pakistan

The hidden WhatsApp malware was first discovered by an Israeli security group called Check Point and they have informed Google about the situation at hand.

A patch has been rolled out for those who have downloaded applications from the third-party platform. According to Forbes, the researchers have also found dormant pieces of the malware code in some apps on Google Play.

Mehreen Jabbar’s romantic drama, Dil Kiya Karey starring Feroze Khan opposite Yumna Zaidi was one of the most highly anticipated dramas of 2019.

While the story may not have been extraordinary or unusual, it’s the execution that stole the spotlight.

Penned by Asma Nabeel, Dil Kiya Karey is an emotional tale of Armaan played by Feroze Khan who happens to be in love with Aiman (Yumna Zaidi).

She marries Saadi (Mirza Zain Baig) who is a loving husband, and Arman is left heartbroken to the extent that he thinks he can never find anyone again. He moves to China for some business matters.

The last episode showed everyone panicking because Aiman was missing from the house after knowing the truth. Armaan, on the other hand, has a flight for America on the very same day. While he’s supposed to leave soon, he ends up hunting for her too.

After finding that her father wanted her to marry Arman, she’s left confused about her decision. Later she confesses her feelings for Armaan and the audience couldn’t help but go ‘Awwwww’.

Despite acknowledging and owning her developing feelings for Armaan, Aiman doesn’t want to rush into anything. She also tells him that she had a dream where Saadi is giving her hand into his hand.

Dil Kiya Karey is a beautiful tale of love and relationships. Armaan marrying a window and wanting to raise her child is a progressive message to all those regressive people in the society who make things harder for women than they already are.

Apart from and Yumna Zaidi the cast also included Mariam Nafees, Sonia Rehman, Sarmad Khoosat, Shamim Hilali, Abid Ali and Tanveer Jamal who played their characters to perfection nonetheless. Directed by Mehreen Jabbar, the drama was absolutely worth watching and we cannot wait to watch Feroze and Yumna star in more projects together.

Not too long ago, Karachi, the City of Lights, was so popular for being anything but the City of Lights.

The dangerous city constantly went through years and years of terrorism including bomb blasts, kidnappings, target killings and criminal activities of all levels and against all kinds of races, sects, languages and religions.

Their efforts have greatly helped to improve the world’s perception of Karachi, and their sacrifices in doing so are not to be ignored.

  • 638 Police officials sacrificed their lives in the line of their duties
  • 287 in target killings
  • 87 in during encounters
  • and 264 during the performing duties in Karachi

Facts and figures suggested that ‘Karachi targeted Action’ initiated by former chief justice, Iftikhar Chaudhry in 2011, was a huge contributor in restoring the law and order situation and decreasing criminal events by up to 80 percent.

Suhail Jokhio, Spokesman Sindh Police said that Police officials sacrifice their lives only to safeguard the city’s peace.

“No doubt Law Enforcers done a great job in restoration of peace in city,”

He added that the Police department are constantly making efforts to maintain peace, and aim to make the city as crime free and safe as possible.

Things kept improving then onwards. Here is what the 2015 report tells us:

  • the number of killings reached 995 in ordinary crimes and personal enmity
  • there were 159 target killings
  • 7 bomb blasts
  • 35 kidnapped for ransom
  • and 233 incidents of extortion were reported

And two years later, in 2017, the situation got better:

  • killings in ordinary crimes went down to almost half at around 583
  • target killings reduced to 23
  • only 17 incidents of kidnapping for ransom were reported
  • Whereas the number of bomb blasts was none

The most recent report is even better with the following stats:

  • 268 killings of ordinary incidents
  • 10 target killings
  • 8 incidents of kidnapping for ransom
  • 63 incidents of extortion

‘Sacred Games 2’ Trailer is Out & Looks More Thrilling Than Before!

Sacred Games is an Indian web thriller series based on Vikram Chandra’s 2006 novel of the same name produced on Netflix.

Starring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, it was the first ever Netflix original series produced in India.

After keeping fans impatient for so long, the makers have finally released the highly-anticipated trailer of the second edition of their blockbuster series.

The first season left us all hanging with the city in danger and one of the key creators of this chaos, Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) dead.

Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan), a troubled police officer learns that Ganesh is dead at the end of the first season after a series of unusual events and is now on a mission to solve the mystery.

“The game’s bigger, the stakes are higher, and the players are ready. ‘Sacred Games 2’ premieres 15 August, only on Netflix,” the description on YouTube read.

Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui will reprise their roles as Sartaj Singh and Ganesh Gaitonde, while new characters played by Kalki Koechlin, Pankaj Tripathi and Ranvir Shorey also make an appearance in the trailer.

Meesha Shafi was quiet on the matter for a while, but she has finally broken silence over the matter. It was only natural that spoke up around LSA last year, and she chose to speak up around the same time this year.

Here is what she has said:

Calling Ali Zafar and his team’s attacks conspiracy theories, she clarified that their attacks have been “creative but baseless”.

She also thanked her legal team for “being on the right side of history”.

Moreover, she extended her respect to celebrities who had withdrawn themselves from LSA 2019 nominations.

However, it is yet to be seen how Meesha and her team will choose to proceed on the case legally.

Google recently conducted the Women Will Lead workshop for the first time in Pakistan to discuss the progress of young working women in today’s corporate and business environment.

The Women Will Lead Workshop in Karachi is a training program organized by Google Partners and focused on career development and cultivating female leadership skills within digital and marketing landscape of the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Country Manager, Pakistan & South Asian Frontier Markets, Farhan Qureshi said:

“Every day more and more Pakistani women are becoming part of our corporate landscape; and in many cases leading big teams and brands.

Pakistani women over the years have proven that they are more than capable in leadership positions and in particular, the advertising, marketing and creative industry has the opportunity to lead Pakistan in developing future talent, particularly with regards to rising female stars.”

 

The highlight of the event was a panel discussion of notable women personalities from Pakistan’s corporate landscape: Dr. Ayesha Khan, CEO and Country Head, Acumen Pakistan; Ms. Sultana Siddiqui, CEO Hum Network; Ms. Sima Kamil, President & CEO UBL; Ms. Shazia Syed, CEO Unilever Pakistan along with Google’s Farhan Qureshi were amongst the panelists. Sarah Liu, Founder & Managing Director of The Dream Collective, flew in from Australia to moderate the event.

The highly accomplished panel of women leaders shared their stories and viewpoints on the subject. The challenges they faced on their road to success were of interest to the audience and the panelists also gave career tips to the aspiring women professionals in the audience.

Women Will is a Google initiative to help women everywhere, with the aim of equipping them with the knowledge and tools to succeed.

The initiative focuses on helping women to realize their true worth as professionals and to inspire them to dream and pass the phases of grind with their heads held high.

Apart from inculcating a deeper understanding of gender disparity and how it manifests in the work environment, the event also helped women to expand their network by connecting with peers, mentors and sponsors who can support their career.

In June 2019 the Canadian province Quebec passed a ‘secular’ law according to which some civil servants, including teachers, will not be allowed to come to work wearing religious symbols like headscarves, turbans, etc.

Needless to say, the law sparked quite a debate within and outside the province. Some supported it as a good step taken towards a more secular state, where religion and state would be different.

However, some were of the opinion that it was a discriminatory law as it targeted Muslims in the name of openness and tolerance.

Mr Roberge, the Education Minister of Quebec, met Ms Yousafzai, the Nobel Peace Prize winner to discuss access to education and international development while he was in France.

He praised Malala for her courage and efforts with regards to women’s education, as Malala is popularly known for having been shot in the head and still persisting and pursuing education for herself and other girls too.

However, on the other hand, when asked in a tweet by journalist Salim Nadim Valji how he would respond if Ms. Yousafzai wished to teach in Quebec, he gave a shocking response that has created a stir on social media and otherwise.

Defending the law which covers judges, police officers, teachers and some other public figures, here is what the minister had to say.

“I would certainly tell her that it would be an immense honour and that in Quebec, as is the case in France (where we are now) and in other open and tolerant countries, teachers cannot wear religious symbols in performing their duties,”

Moreover, he also went ahead and shared a picture with Malala, which created quite a storm as the minister was called a hypocrite on Twitter for supporting an anti-hijab law but posting a picture with a hijaabi.

Karachi Public Transport Fares Increased by up to 100%

The transporters association in Karachi, on Sunday, increased the prices for bus fares, minibusses, and coaches by 100%.

The price of public transport fares comes after the increase in fuel prices, triggering a butterfly effect.

Given that there is already inflation in the country, the lower to the middle bracket is now facing anxiety.

A leader of the main transporters’ body informed Dawn that the transporters would observe strike on July 10 in the city to pressurize the provincial government to increase fares.

According to one of the passengers, the route number 11-C bus has increased the fare from Safoora Chowk to Saddar from Rs. 20 to Rs. 40.

The passenger further shared that when the public asked the conductors to present the official notice of fare increase, they were unable to provide any official document.

Instead, the passengers were shown a letter made and printed by the Bus Owners Association of Karachi.

Those passengers who raised their voices or refused to pay more were told that they can exit the vehicle if they are not willing to comply.

On the other hand, Mohammed Salman told Dawn that the minibus of route W-11 had increased fare from Liaquatabad to Tower from Rs20 to Rs30.

Passengers further complaint bus conductors and drivers over-fill their vehicles with travelers just to earn more money, which put the safety of all passengers at high-risk.

Mohammed Azam, who travels from Gulshan-i-Hadeed to Saddar on a daily basis, told Dawn that Muslim coach’s fare was Rs30 for travel between the two places, but it had recently stopped plying on full route. Instead, the coach drivers stop the vehicle at Quaidabad from where another coach charges Rs20 for onward journey to Gulshan-i-Hadeed.

The application will provide individuals with the latest news and information in regards to attractive recreational sites for both locals and foreigners to visit.

According to PTDC Chairman Sayed Zulfiqar Bukhari, the application will help unlock the true potential of the country’s tourism as the country embraces technological advancements as per Prime Minister Imran Khan’s vision.

While appreciating the initiatives of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism Corporation, he added that the federal government of Pakistan will implement the same model across the nation to boost tourism activities.

The plan will include provinces including Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, and Azad and Jammu Kashmir under one umbrella. PM Imran Khan will launch PTDC’s mega project of branding Pakistan abroad very soon, the chairman added.

Lauding the government for their efforts to improve tourism and for introducing an online visa regime, Bhukari said that Pakistan is now one step closer to yielding positive results.
