#KarachiEat2018: 7 Stalls that Won the Festival!

Pakistanis are foodies by blood, for 5-years now, Karachi Eat Festival has remained successful for one simple reason, our love for food! This year to keep the excitement going, the organizers decided to step-out-of-the-box.

Last year, the ticket was priced at Rs. 250, this year the charges are Rs.300 with Rs. 100 redeemable, which means it got cheaper! Not to forget there will be over 120 stalls and a new venue, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Park.

Our passion for ‘tharkas’ and new innovations pulled us towards some really finger-licking good stalls this year!

Here are 7 stalls that truly won KEF’18!

1. Shan Foods (Stall No. B-3)

No matter how many fast food brands might catch your eyes, the love and desire for desi food in un-dying. Shan Food’s stall won our hearts with their desi winter menu! Last year, they worked their magic with the best Biryani in K-Town, this year it was their Paya and Nihari, and yes the delicious fried fish and keema that did it once again.

2. Meat the Cheese (Stall No.85)

Despite the long wait, all we can say is… WORTH IT! Meat the Cheese has marked a bar in no time at all. The service is fantastic, food is outstanding, everyone is eager to walk away with a satisfied stomach! If you are a steak lover, the Sirloin steak is a must have!

3. YUM by Amna (Stall No.1)

Amna never disappoints! If you have are a sweet-tooth, this stall is heaven on Earth for you then! YUM by Amna will cater to your cravings and we also get the chance to meet the cast of the upcoming film ‘Cake’!

4. Fry Guys (Stall No.30)

Fry Guys have been known for their famous ‘Deep Fried Chicken in a Waffle Cone’ but this year, the winner of the stall was their ‘Pastrami’! Hands down one of the best dishes if you want a change for your taste-buds at KEF.

5. Awesamosas (Stall No.40)

Talk about innovation! Ever imagine eating pizza, chocolate s’mores or apples as a filling in a samosa? Awesamosas just made our wildest dreams come true by taking us on a rollercoaster ride for one heck of a foodie adventure!

6. Chapli Kebab House

Just like the Shan Foods stall, if you want more desi flavours on your tastebuds, Chapli Kebab House has your back! dominating the recipe for the best kebabs at the festival, ‘agar chapli kebab nahi khaya toh kuch nahi kahya at KEF18!’

7. TacoCat

Mexican was the cuisine if you are looking for more variety of flavours, and there was absolutely no better place to binge on Mexican food asides TacoCat! Crispy, fresh, divine, saucy, and a must-have for those who love flavours from around the world!

We also tried some amazing new stalls including No Lies Fries, Teazuro, Saydys and many more!

Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) proudly revealed today the much-awaited #BeMyGuest campaign video, featuring Bollywood Baadshah Shah Rukh Khan.

While the first video, which took YouTube by storm last year, featured Shah Rukh Khan surprising residents and visitors around Dubai, this year Shah Rukh Khan explores what he considers to be his second home and takes viewers on a fascinating, multi-faceted journey through the city of endless possibilities.

Marking the first-ever collaboration between Shah Rukh Khan and acclaimed Bollywood director Kabir Khan, the newly launched 2.0 #BeMyGuest portrays Shah Rukh Khan’s journey across a series of short films that see him taking visitors to Dubai through a multifaceted destination that holds global brand appeal in much the same way he does as an actor.

Shah Rukh Khan reaches out to his legions of fans across the globe, and introduces them to the lives of four different characters, and how he personalises each of their experiences of Dubai by injecting the warmth and spirit of the city that resonate with him, yet each customised to the needs of every visitor.

Moving to the pilot episode, a heated debate is in the air in the Mujahid house where the children are forcing their ‘ammi jaan’ to get rid of an outdated wall painting and console. Apparently, it did not go with the American styled furniture.

While the melodrama continued and the mother gives a lecture on how kids these days do not appreciate antique items, a girl comes knocking at the door!

She introduces herself as Hira, the neighbor and starts communicating in fluent English! Of course, the kids were all inspired by their ‘angrezi parosoi’ while the mother seemed pretty miffed by her presence.

The twist comes when Hira could not help praising the console and the artsy painting! Eventually, the entire clan agreed that both the items can stay.

Suzuki Pakistan Dominates Automotive Sales in 2017!

Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) has released a report on figures of sales conducted throughout 2017.

Unfortunately for other manufacturers, their performance was not so impressive!

According to the report, these are the following figures;

  • Pak Suzuki, in the 1300cc category, sold 381 Suzuki Swift hatchbacks in December 2017; in the previous month, the company sold 342 units of the Swift
  • Honda Pakistan sold 2,464 units (Civic and City) and only 3,208 vehicles in November were sold
  • Indus Motors (Toyota) 3,807 units in December and 4,537 in November (19% dip in sales)

Apart from Suzuki, no other manufacturer had seen an increase in their sales. This is an alarming situation as the increase in the value of the cars have caused a backlash for the manufacturers already.

#SaveBatool: Social Media Unites to Save 6 Year Old Rape Victim!

When APS had happened, the entire country had mourned be it man, woman, or children, and even today the nation is hurting from the incident leaving behind a scar, which will not even heal with time.

Similarly, another incident left a deep wound of our hearts and souls, the passing away of 7-yr old Zainab, who was mercilessly raped and murdered, left to rot in a waste dump in Kasur.

However, many were unaware that even before Zainab lost her like in the Kasur incident which has shaken the world, there were several other children before her, one of them is Kainaat Batool.

Kainaat’s story is also devastating, it will make you want to rip out your heart because let’s face it, humanity has died from within us and we are nothing but soul-less bodies feeding on the innocent. Out of the 12 children who were recovered, she was the only one to survive.

“It has to be the same man. It has to be the same person who did this to Kainaat,” -kAINAAT’S fATHER

The 6-year old girl left her home on the evening of 11th November to buy yogurt from a nearby shop and failed to make it back home. Devastated by her absence, her father gathered their friends and family to send out a search-party. After missing for 24-hours, the family received a call which toppled their world upside forever.

Kainaat was found in a heap of trash in a critical condition. The little girl was brutally raped and was left there thinking that she was dead, however, every second, that poor girl was suffering from pain which we can not even think about.

“The day we found her, we rushed her to Lahore’s Children Hospital, She stayed there till Jan 2, after which the doctors said it was best to take her home. But we knew she was not yet okay.”- Kainaat’s Father

The six-year-old is in Kasur’s DHQ Hospital for the past ten days. “The doctors say they found torture marks on her body,” he added.

“I am making do financially with some friends’ help. I would not be able to afford hospital expenses otherwise.” said her father. He is a labor worker who earns on a daily basis, however, since his daughter has been admitted, he has not earned a single penny as he stays by her side.

It has been 2 months since the innocence of the child was taken away, the trauma was too much for her to endure, so much that the child has not spoken a single word since and cannot properly move all parts of her body. Not only has Kainaat been physically and emotionally scarred, the mental trauma the child has endured is too much for someone of that age to survive.

After Kainaat’s story surfaced, celebrities who help spread the campaign #JusticeForZainab are now standing hand-in-hand for this angel by taking it to social media asking for everyone to help her and her parents by providing aid.

Even after the passing of Zainab, 3 more bodies of children were discovered. Parents in Kasur, in Punjab, and in Pakistan and sick and tired of having their children sacrificed, it’s about time we hang the culprits and instead of saying we are seeking justice, we want to say, justice has been served!

The world-wide messaging software, WhatsApp has made life easier for everyone since its inception. However, with all applications, none can escape the bugs and flaws that leave security loopholes.

WhatsApp has recently increased its security after the inclusion of end-to-end encryption. A recent research has found loopholes in the messaging application’s security protocols. It has been reported by Wired that anyone who has access to the WhatsApp server can easily add people to private groups even if they have not been invited to the group by the Admin.

The news is definitely a surprise as WhatsApp has mentioned multiple times on the importance of security for the company.

Paul Rosler, one of the researchers who discovered the loophole mentions,

“The confidentiality of the group is broken as soon as the uninvited member can obtain all the new messages and read them.”

The encryption set by WhatsApp doesn’t mean so much anymore if someone at the company can simply add a new person to a private chat anytime they want.

The private chats users currently have with friends and family can be breached anytime if someone gains access to the company’s servers. 

However, following the news, WhatsApp has responded that a notification would be sent out to all members if anyone new is added to the group. It would not be possible to keep the outsider a secret in the private chat.

Ethereum is Leaving Bitcoin Behind, Hits all-time High!

While on one hand, the value of Bitcoin and Ripple is continuously falling, Ethereum is paving its way to the top.

The new cryptocurrency has hit its all-time high value of $1,300 on Wednesday.

Ethereum is now the second-highest valued cryptocurrency in the market. However, the value of the currency has since pulled back, but remains in positive territory for the day, up more than 3.5% as of 1:20 p.m.

Bitcoin and Ripple’s XRP, both of which have seen falls on Wednesday. At 1.20 p.m. GMT, bitcoin was lower by about 3.3%, trading at $13,980, Ripple (XRP) remains 10% lower. One of the reasons behind this fall in value is being said to be the overnight announcement that the Australian Tax Office was establishing a task force to monitor cryptocurrency transactions.

Some Business Insider analysts have said; “aims to ensure cryptocurrency investors are paying the correct amount of tax” and a “team of specialists across tax law, technology, banking, and finance will devise strategies to follow the money on gains made from investment in the digital currency.”

“We are consulting with key stakeholders who have expressed an interest in tax issues relating to cryptocurrencies,” a spokesman for the ATO said.

iPhone Battery Explosion Injures One!

Recently, Samsung and Apple were under fire, literally! There were several reports about Note 8 batteries causing concerns as once the phone’s charge ended, it wouldn’t restart. Now, an incident has occurred with Apple’s battery!

While getting a battery replacement, a battery of an iPhone 6S exploded! This caused the Apple’s Calle Colón Store located in Valencia, Spain was immediately evacuated, leaving one man injured in the process.

Reported by Spanish outlet Las Provincias, an iPhone battery exploded at 1:30 PM local time today as it was being worked on.

According to municipal sources, the outbreak flooded the upper floor with smoke. The firefighters did not intervene because store employees opened the windows quickly to ventilate the establishment. The workers threw dirt on the burned battery and vacated the premises without incidents, the report read.

Battery problems have been reported in Samsung before, but Apple has not had such serious issues with their iPhones.

The futuristic city promises to be the next top investment destination. The Saudi Vision is said to attract investors from across the globe.

Saudi Arabia also plans to give foreign workers the right to own property in the country. This news seems to be the game changer and could open opportunities for Pakistani businessmen. They also plan to increase e-commerce by 80% in the retail sector.

According to various sources, there are plans to allow 100% foreign ownership for engineering firms investing in the futuristic city. As Pak-Saudi relations are friendly this would attract many Pakistani investors to take their business there.

Swine Flu Hits Karachi!

The notorious swine flu is an infectious disease that is highly contagious and is easily transmitted from one person to the other. After claiming several lives in South Punjab, it has now been reported that dozens of people in Karachi have fallen victims to the H1N1 virus.

According to The News, 38 people in Karachi have been confirmed to have fallen sick due to the Swine flu. 

An official from the Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi has mentioned,

“We have received dozens of suspected cases of H1N1 influenza since the middle of December. Following medical tests, 38 people have been confirmed to be infected by the virus as of January 8.”

The signs and symptoms of the swine flu are similar to the normal cold that we are accustomed to such as a fever, cough, sore throat, severe body ache, headaches, and fatigue. However, swine flu patients have also reported vomiting and diarrhea.

The doctors have asked swine flu patients to take extra care as soon as the symptoms become evident. The patient must rest and cover their mouth while sneezing and coughing and then throw tissue paper after using it just once.

Doctors have mentioned swine flu to be fatal for the patients who suffer from low levels of immunity in their body, elders, and children.

Multan has reported 18 people have already lost their lives to Swine flu. The number of patients keeps increasing in other cities of Punjab.

#JusticeForEveryChild: Another Minor Becomes Victim of Rape & Murder in Punjab!

Yesterday, the country mourned the death of 8-yr old Zainab. Her death unleashed a wave of anger among Pakistanis who demanded #JusticeForZainab. However, just a few hours later, another minor became prey to the same cruel fate as hers.

This time, it was 15-yr old Faizan. He was kidnapped and went missing from home since Tuesday night before his body was discovered in an agriculture field. The autopsy stated that the boy was sexually assaulted and was murdered after being raped.

Faizan was a student of class 9, who belonged to the Jhok Kharlan area. The tragic case occurred in Dijkot district of Faisalabad.  According to police, his body was found from open fields outside a village, Chak-243RB, in Dijkot area of Faisalabad district.

“It is my opinion that the victim was first subjected to sodomy and then strangled to death. Marks on the hands and feet of the victim appear to show signs of resistance,” said Dr. Khalid Iqbal, in-charge of Rural Health Centre Dijkot.

Zainab and Faizan were not the only cases of minor rape and murder, as of now, 11 cases have surfaced in which children were kidnapped from their homes, brutally raped, and strangled to death.

In the first six months of 2017 alone, 1,764 cases of child sexual abuse were reported from across the country, according to Sahil. In 2016, the total number of reported child abuse cases stood at a staggering 4,139, bringing the total number of children being abused in Pakistan per day to 11.

Still, the police have not been able to catch the culprits, and as expected justice is still being awaited. It surely is sad to see that it took the sacrifice of 11 angels to give the country and the government a wakeup call. Was the Army Public School attack not enough? Was it not enough that we sacrificed hundreds of children before we woke up only to go back to sleep?

We Pakistanis proudly call ourselves ‘zinda quom’ but in fact, we should be calling ourselves ‘murda quom’. We have become heartless, our hearts have been ripped from our bodies and our soul has vanished. It is just a matter of days when every woman in this country, every daughter, every son is eaten by this hunger of worldly pleasure.
