Mercedes-AMG Plotting Porsche Cayman Rival: Report

Ronaldo Ends Nine-Year Madrid Reign, joins Juventus

Modern great Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid to join Italian champions Juventus for 100 million euros ($117 million) on Tuesday, with the Portuguese superstar saying the time had come “for a new stage” in his life.

Juventus confirmed that Ronaldo had signed a four-year contract and that the transfer fee, including 12 million euros in add-ons, would be paid over two years, with Spanish media reporting he would receive a salary of 30 million euros a season.

The 33-year-old striker is expected to have a medical in Turin next week before being unveiled by his new side.

“Today Real Madrid want to give thanks to a player who has demonstrated he is the best in the world and who marked one of the most brilliant periods in the history of our club and world football,” European champions Real Madrid said in a statement.

In a letter posted on the Real website, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner said his time in the Spanish capital, during which he became their record goalscorer, had been one of the happiest in his life.

“I only have feelings of huge thanks for this club, for the fans and for this city,” he said.

“But I think the time has come to open a new stage in my life and that’s why I asked the club to accept to transfer me.

“I ask everyone, and especially our supporters, to please understand me.”

Juventus begin their pre-season schedule with a friendly against Bayern Munich on July 25 in Philadelphia, while Ronaldo could make his competitive debut for the club the following month, with Serie A to announce its fixtures for the upcoming season on July 20.

Ronaldo, whose World Cup campaign with Portugal was ended in the last 16 by Uruguay just under two weeks ago, hinted after May’s Champions League final victory over Liverpool that he was considering leaving the Santiago Bernabeu.

“It was very nice to be in Madrid,” he said at the time, using the past tense. He later played down the comment, but doubts over his future at Madrid lingered, especially after he had also threatened to leave the previous year.

Despite failing to score in the 3-1 win in Kiev which sealed Real’s third successive European Cup, Ronaldo finished as the Champions League leading scorer for the sixth consecutive time with 15 goals, including an incredible overhead kick at Juventus in the quarter-finals which saw the Italian fans stand and applaud the forward.

– Juve focused on European glory –

Now Juventus will be hoping that he can maintain his ruthlessness in front of goal for a few more years and finally help them end an agonising wait to become European champions for the first time since 1996, despite a prolonged period of domestic success.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side claimed a seventh straight Serie A title last season by holding off an inspired Napoli, but fell to Real in Europe after a dramatic last-eight clash, when Ronaldo ended a thrilling fightback by the Old Lady with a controversial last-gasp penalty.

Ronaldo also scored twice in the 2017 final as Real downed Juve 4-1 in Cardiff.

It will be the biggest fee ever paid for a player aged over 30, but the Italians are gambling on the hope that Ronaldo can produce similar longevity to their former goalkeeper Gianliugi Buffon, 40, who left for Paris Saint-Germain last week.

But they are not the only ones with faith in one of the best players of all time, with Juventus’ shares on the stock exchange spiking by almost 40 percent since rumors of Ronaldo’s arrival first surfaced on June 28, and by 5.7 percent on Tuesday alone.

Ronaldo won two La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns with Real after joining from Manchester United in 2009 for a then world-record fee of £80 million ($94 million).

The winger was converted into an out-and-out striker, scoring an incredible 451 goals for Los Blancos in just 438 matches, smashing the club’s previous scoring record of 323 held by Raul.

“They have been nine unique years,” added Ronaldo.

“It has been an exciting time for me, full of respect but also hard because Real Madrid has high expectations, but I know very well that I will never forget that I have enjoyed football here in a unique way.”

Serie A will be the third of Europe’s four biggest leagues that Ronaldo has graced, and his move shows that none of his drive and ambition have decreased in the latter stages of his career.

He will also be hoping to take the lead later this year in his personal race with Barcelona forward Lionel Messi for most Ballon d’Or awards, although fans will now have fewer on-field battles between the two to enjoy.

Belgium’s ‘Golden Generation’ Exit World Cup

Belgium’s defeat by France in their World Cup semi-final produced mixed feelings of sadness, gratitude, and pride from fans at home on Tuesday, who bemoaned a missed opportunity for their “golden generation”.

A second-half header from Samuel Umtiti in Saint Petersburg gave France a 1-0 win, earning them a place in Sunday’s final in Moscow against either England or Croatia.

Thousands of crestfallen fans walked away quickly after the final whistle sounded on a giant screen in the town of Waterloo, south of the Belgian capital Brussels.

“We’re very disappointed,” 27-year-old Alice Cordier told AFP in Waterloo, where French emperor Napoleon was defeated by a mix of European forces in a huge battle in 1815.

“It’s really too bad to lose to France, Belgium’s national bad luck,” she added. “But we are still proud to be Belgian.”

Some echoed the love-hate relationship and inferiority complex many French-speaking Waltons have with their bigger neighbor France.

“We will hear it spoken about for one hundred years,” 26-year-old supporter Stephanie Smeets said. “The French will take the mickey out of us.”

French speakers, who share a country with Dutch and German speakers, are particularly sensitive to what they see as France’s condescending attitude toward them.

It’s only the second time in history that Belgium have reached the World Cup semi-finals, 32 years after Diego Maradona’s Argentina beat them at the same stage in Mexico in 1986 before going on to win the title.

France won the World Cup in 1998 and are now in their third final.

But Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel was full of praise for the Red Devils.

“Bravo @BelRedDevils for your performance and having thrilled us until the semi-final,” Michel tweeted.

– ‘Harsh logic’ –

For many observers, this generation of talented players including Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, Vincent Kompany and others had a real chance to come home victorious.

“Regrets are eternal. It will not be our day of glory on this 10 July,” a presenter of Belgium’s French-language RTBF television station said after the final whistle.

But he thanked the team.

“Thanks for having allowed, thanks to football, to forget everything a bit and enjoy moments of pleasure.”

Analysts have also praised the multicultural team, including those whose parents are Congolese and Moroccan immigrants, for helping to unite a country split by political tensions over the Dutch and French language.

In Brussels, the national colors — black, yellow and red — were draped over cars, balconies, and cafes that showed the match on television.

In one cafe, Mathieu Geslan, a 32-year-old French baker who has lived in Brussels for nine years, wore Belgium’s red jersey to watch the match with his Belgian partner Aurore Szabo.

“The French have won once the World Cup. So why not have the Belgians win this time?” he said at half-time when the score was still 0-0.

After the match, there was plenty of analysis of what went wrong.

“The Belgians did not manage the last half hour well,” 79-year-old Jean Dhave said in the Brussels suburb of Uccle.

“We are sad but it is deserved,” said Dhave, a manager of a tennis club who organized a special evening for the match.

He said that key men De Bruyne and Hazard were not on form.

Belgian comedian Benoit Poelvoorde had predicted a 1-0 France victory in newspaper Le Soir.

“I think our team will lose Tuesday evening because it has every chance of winning. That’s the harsh logic,” he said.

Pakistan Just Launched Two Satellites & Indians are Not Happy!

Pakistan has launched not one but two indigenously manufactured satellites. These were launched using the Chinese Long March (KM-2C) rocket.

Out of the two, one satellite is a remote sensing satellite (PRSS1) for Earth observational and optical purposes. Whereas the second is the PAK-TES-1A, weights around 285KG. It is made by the scientists and engineers of Pakistan Space and SUPARCO.

Sanofi Shuts Down Factory over Toxic Waste Outcry

Both the satellites were sent to China as Pakistan currently lacks the infrastructure needed to launch both the objects into space.

Unfortunately, Pakistan’s progress and its friendship with China dropped like an atom bomb on some Indians who raised an objection.

Well, whatever the response the launch may be getting, it is a small leap towards greatness in Pakistan’s journey to go above and beyond.

Pakistan Ranks 22nd Among World’s Powerful Nations: Report

Sanofi Shuts Down Factory over Toxic Waste Outcry

French pharmaceuticals group Sanofi announced late Monday an immediate halt in production at a chemical factory in southwest France, in the wake of media reports that toxic waste emissions exceeded the norms.

“Sanofi Chemical has decided from today to stop production at its Mourenx site and to carry out the announced technical improvements needed to return to normal,” the group said in a brief statement.

It added that it was conducting an internal inquiry “to better understand the causes and history of the situation.”

Earlier Monday, Sanofi had admitted there was “a problem of exceeding the threshold for the vapour waste of solvents,” but it insisted that the local population was not exposed to levels higher than those laid down by regulation, a finding it said was determined by an independent health impact study.

The Mourenx factory with around 50 employees has been at the heart of an environmental outcry since Sunday.

France Nature Environment (FNE) said in a statement that the site has been emitting “dangerous material at astronomical levels”.

FNE, a federation of some 3,500 environmental associations, claims that in reality the factory’s emissions are “7,000 times more than the authorised norm… sending astronomical quantities of pollutants into the air”.

FNE and a local group Sepanso 64 had demanded the immediate shutdown of the factory, noting in particular that the chemical compound bromopropane in the emissions can hurt fertility or the foetus, and also irritate a person’s respiratory system and the skin.

Sanofi meanwhile said that it has already instituted an action plan to collect and treat the waste to significantly reduce it and that it had planned 10 days ago to carry out summer maintenance of the site.

FIFA World Cup 2018: France Eye Final but Belgium have Henry Factor!

World Cup favorites France are targeting the final in Russia two decades after their 1998 triumph with one of their greatest players, Thierry Henry, plotting their downfall from the dugout of opponents Belgium.

The European neighbors meet in Tuesday’s first semi-final in Saint Petersburg for the right to play England or Croatia in Sunday’s showpiece in Moscow.

Former Arsenal and Barcelona forward Henry, who was part of the squad that won the World Cup on home soil 20 years ago, is now alongside Belgium coach Roberto Martinez and eyeing the chinks in France’s armor.

“It will be bizarre to have him up against us,” said France striker Olivier Giroud. “He is a living legend of French football.

“He has given so much to the France team and we have got a lot of respect for what he has done. But we’re not thinking about it too much, we’re going to be focused on the pitch and our game.”

A slick Belgium side boasting the talents of Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku are the only team to have won all their matches in Russia and are the top scorers, with 14 goals.

Confidence is sky-high after they ousted Neymar’s Brazil in the quarter-finals but they will come up against formidable opponents in France as they try to reach a first ever World Cup final.

Didier Deschamps’ side, with Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe up front, struggled for goals in their group matches but have now hit their stride, dominating Uruguay after beating Argentina.

France will start the semi-final in Saint Petersburg as favorites, with an impressive mix of youth and experience allied to tournament nous after they reached the Euro 2016 final.

With Hugo Lloris impressing in goal and a solid midfield of Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante, the one potential weakness for France could be their inexperienced defense.

Belgium’s Thomas Meunier will miss the game after picking up a second yellow card but France will be buoyed by the return of defensive midfielder Blaise Matuidi, after sitting out a suspension of his own.

– Southgate tells stars: you can be heroes –

For the fifth time in World Cup history, the semi-finals will be an all-European affair. On each of those occasions, the tournament has been hosted in Europe.

In the other last-four clash on Wednesday, England takes on Croatia in Moscow.

England boss Gareth Southgate has told his players they can be bigger heroes even than the generation of 1966, which featured Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton.

“I’ve met quite a few of those players and we know exactly how they’re held and perhaps, in the modern era, that would be even crazier,” Southgate told British newspapers.

“(With) social media and everything else, the global thing is so much bigger.”

England is gripped by World Cup fever. Nearly 20 million viewers tuned in for the win over Sweden and social media is awash with videos of excited fans watching on big screens in bars and parks, fanatically celebrating every England goal.

Captain Harry Kane is the man leading England’s charge in Russia with six goals so far, putting him top in the race for the Golden Boot. Lukaku is on four goals and France’s Griezmann and Mbappe have three each.

Despite Kane’s impressive tally, Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic has identified Raheem Sterling as England’s danger man in their semi-final.

Sterling was a key part of the Manchester City side that won the Premier League last season but he has been less effective in England’s charge to the last four for the first time since 1990.

“I think Raheem Sterling is an important player because he is fast and dangerous alongside Harry Kane,” Dalic said.

Croatia, who boast Real Madrid’s Luka Modric and Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic in a strong midfield, emerged through extra-time and spot-kicks against Denmark before going through the same ordeal again against Russia in Saturday’s quarter-final.

“Our last three games were different because we played teams with a defensive approach,” he said.

“But we are looking forward to a different style of game against England because they like to play attacking the football.”

Samsung Opens World’s Biggest Smartphone Factory in India

Samsung opened the world’s largest smartphone factory in India on Monday, a move Prime Minister Narendra Modi said would help transform Asia’s third-largest economy into a global manufacturing hub.

Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in inaugurated the giant assembling plant — an expansion of an existing Samsung facility — in the city of Noida on the outskirts of New Delhi.

“The Noida plant has now become Samsung’s largest smartphone manufacturing unit,” Moon said, as the company announced that it planned to eventually manufacture 120 million smartphones a year at the factory.

The decision by Samsung comes at a critical time for the South Korean electronics giant, which is facing a tough battle from Chinese competitors for the control of India’s massive smartphone market.

It is also a shot in the arm for Modi’s flagship “Make in India” campaign which is trying to attract foreign investment and drum up much-needed jobs in manufacturing.

Modi said the new factory would generate jobs in Uttar Pradesh, an impoverished state of roughly 220 million where his Bharatiya Janata Party won a crucial election last year.

“This is an important step towards making India a manufacturing hub,” the prime minister said of the USD$750 million factory investment.

“It is a matter of pride for India and Uttar Pradesh.”

President Moon will be formally received by India’s President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday before holding talks with Modi in the Indian capital.
