Prosus Ventures Funds $13 Million in Series B Funding to Pakistan’s Ride-Hailing Service, Bykea!

Bykea, a Pakistan-based on-demand transport & logistics platform, announced that it had raised $13 Million in a Series B funding round led by Prosus Ventures (formerly Naspers Ventures). The round, which brought the total funds raised to US$22m, saw participation from existing investors Middle East Venture Partners and Sarmayacar.

The pioneer and leader in motorbike taxi and on-demand delivery in Pakistan, Bykea plans to invest significantly in its platform strategy leveraging its peak active driver fleet of 30K+ in 2020 for cross-utilization in e-commerce logistics, food, and payment services in 2021. The fresh capital will also be used to expand Bykea’s market reach in smaller cities.

This is a crucial development as it will pave the way for investment by more countries in Pakistan.” said Ambassador for Foreign Investment, Ali J. Siddiqui.

“Bringing partners like Naspers/Prosus ventures into Pakistan will draw attract many other relevant technology investors, bringing more capital into Pakistan. The $13 million investment in the transportation service department will help provide cheap and remarkable services via technology to the middle-class segment of the country.” He added.

The three cities Bykea operates in, Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Lahore, have a combined population of 30 million people. Public transportation is underserved in all three cities, but these urban centers drive the economy of the 5^th most populous country in the world.

Motorbikes are the rails for distributors, couriers, e-commerce retailers, and restaurants to move goods and collect receivables, almost entirely in cash in one of the least banked countries in the world.

With 17 million two-wheelers in Pakistan; 4x the number of cars; Bykea offers millions of people the chance to earn an income by tapping into the tremendous opportunity in the country for both transport and hyperlocal commerce.

Motorway Incident: Police Releases Suspect Waqar ul Hasan

Police released the suspect of the Lahore motorway incident, who surrendered by himself.

Lahore Motorway Incident made ripples all over the mainstream media when the masses started making noise. This news frightened many women and woke a huge part of the population regarding the major societal issue. People went out on the roads and actively participated in social media protests.

In the meantime, the CCPO Lahore made a statement that indicated victim-blaming. It ultimately led to a further aggravated public. Within 2 days, the whole of Pakistan was actively speaking about it. And not even a week had passed when the police released information regarding 2 primary suspects; Abid Ali and Waqar ul Hasan. Abid Ali is still in the wind while Waqar ul Hasan surrendered himself and claimed innocence.

He said: “I have two mobile SIMs registered under my name. The phone number with which the police traced him was being used by one of his relatives.”

Waqar ul Hasan has proven innocent

Suspect Waqar made the argument that he surrendered because he was innocent, further elaborating that he has 2 contact numbers registered on his name. He conveyed this information since the police traced the phone number used in the area. According to him, an acquaintance by the name of Shafqat Ali was the person they wanted.

But the police did not accept it even after a preliminary investigation corroborated with his statement. They moved him to a secure location and waited for the DNA results. After 17 days of detainment, Police released Waqar, considering his claim was proven right. The DNA on the victim did not match Waqar.

Abid Ali’s previous records

A local news channel, 24 NewsHD, visited the prime suspect’s village, where they found that Abid is involved in various other crimes. But out of fear of him and his father, they do not dare to antagonize them. It was brought to their attention that Abid Ali has allegedly raped women in front of their family previously. Meanwhile, the father is also registered in the case in the local police station.

One could think that the police may have released suspect information in a hurry to avoid the spotlight. But we cannot disregard the fact that the primary suspect is still missing. And foreseeing this, the police released the information so that the active public would restrict the suspect’s movement. It was because of this that Waqar also surrendered. However, now that he has been proven innocent, one can only wonder how tarnished his reputation must have become due to the police making his face public.

Our cinema has given birth to some exceptional talents as well and has seen them rode high in success like Waheed Murad, Mohammad Ali, and Zeba.

Before the revival of the Pakistani cinema, there were some movies that you cannot not watch. Often termed as the ‘Best of Pakistani Cinema’, here is a list of ‘Golden’ movies starting from the newest and moving on to the oldest of them.

1. Yeh Dil Aapka Hua (2002)

The film that made a gross total of Rs. 30 million at the Pakistani box office, is a story about a young Pakistani, living abroad, who feels unidentified yearning for the eastern culture and a certain eastern girl. The film won 8 Nigar Awards in 2002.

2. Choorian (1998)

Choorian is a 1998 Pakistani Punjabi-language action-romance film directed by Syed Noor & produced by Haji Faqir Mohammad. Film stars Moammar Rana and Saima. Choorian is Pakistan’s second highest-grossing film of all-time. The film has a simple love story. A city boy is sent to live with his uncle back in the village. He soon falls in love with his uncle’s older daughter Billo. Billo is a servant in her own house and does all the chores for Bahar, her stepmother. Bahar treats her like a slave throughout the movie while her two daughters live like queens. Looks like a local Cinderella!

3. Bandish (1980)

Released on November 1^st, 1980, Bandish completed 81 consecutive weeks (Platinum Jubilee screening) in the Pakistani cinema. The film also won 6 Nigar awards and was also a hit in Indonesia. The story revolves around cross-border love and its implications.

4. Mera Naam Hai Mohabbat (1975)

Mera Naam Hai Mohabbat, a Nigar Award Winner, is your to-go movie if you want to watch a love story which conquers all hardships and later evolves as stronger than ever.

5. Umrao Jaan Ada (1972)

The super hit film based on an Urdu novel by Mirza Hadi Ruswa is a story of revenge, romance, drama and unwanted love. It is an all-in-one movie which was known for years for its impeccable music and poetry.

6. Anjuman (1970)

Anjuman, which later saw a remake in 2013 as well, is a Pakistani Urdu colored film starring Waheed Murad, Rani, Deeba, Santosh Kumar, Sabiha Khanam and Lehri. The film was released during the ‘heydays’ of Waheed Murad and became a milestone in his career. The film was produced by Safdar Masud under the banner Ideal Movies and directed by Hassan Tariq, a well-known Pakistani film director. The movie is about lost love, sacrifice, and tragedy. It also won 8 Nigar awards.

7. Doraha (1967)

An Urdu black and white film, which failed to attract the audience when it as released but gained momentum in the 1980’s and 1990’s, is a romantic and melodious movie. The film was also a big hit in Dhaka and East Pakistan, now known as Bangladesh.

8. Insaniyat (1967)

A masterpiece by the director Shahab Kiranvi, starring Waheed Murad, Zeba, Tariq Aziz, Firdous and Nanna, the film completed 12 weeks on Karachi’s Reevali Cinema (main cinema) and 30 weeks on other cinemas. Thus, the film got the status of Silver Jubilee in Karachi and Golden Jubilee in other cinemas of Pakistan. The film is about a doctor whose love is married to a person suffering from cancer and how the doctors manage to save his love’s husband life. Talk about sacrifice!

9. Mirza Jatt (1967)

Released on 23 November 1967, Mirza Jatt is a Pakistani Punjabi movie based on the legend of Mirza Sahiban. Starring Firdous and Ejaz. Known for its award-winning script and melodious songs, you might want to give ‘Mirza Jatt’ a try!

10. Aaina (1966)

The vintage film which saw a number of remakes in the future, Aaina, was produced by Abdul Hameed and directed by Shabab Keranvi. The main cast of this film included Deeba, Mohammad Ali, Zeenat, Kamal Irani. The movie was known for its songs and poetry.

11. Armaan (1966)

Armaan, a Pakistani black-and-white film produced by Waheed Murad and directed by Pervaiz Malik, was the first Pakistani film to complete 75 weeks in cinemas and, thus, became the first Pakistani “Platinum Jubilee” film. In addition to its commercial success, Armaan won several awards at the Nigar Award ceremony in 1966 including Best Film. The film was picturized in Karachi. Armaan was remade in 2013 starring Fawad Khan and Aamina Shiekh.

12.Malangi (1965)

Malangi, a super hit movie of its era, made a unique record of a Double Golden Jubilee at the same cinema in Lahore. The movie is a must-watch!

Ghunghat is a 1962 Pakistani musical film directed by Khurshid Anwar. The film was selected as the Pakistani entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 36th Academy Awards. The film won four awards at the 1962 Nigar Awards.

The doodle which was unveiled by Google on the actor’s 81st birthday celebrates the life and legacy of the talented star.

Waheed Murad, who was known as Chocolate Hero for his romantic roles was part of some of the most memorable Pakistani films in the 60s and the 70s.

Waheed Murad was born on 2nd October 1938 and died on 23 November 1983 in Karachi but he is still remembered by his fans and followers around the globe.

The dream of space exploration is quite an old one. It has existed since the time humans first looked up at the sky and went, ‘Can we reach there?’ Then, in 1969, we extended beyond the pull of gravity and burst forth from the Exosphere to reach the Moon. Between then and now, we have achieved quite a lot of milestones in space exploration.

Despite that, we are nowhere near even 1% of exploring the known universe. Coming to one of the latest achievements, NASA is scheduled to launch its first Microgravity Toilet to the international space station.

This information reminds one of when ‘Howard Wolowitz’ from ‘The Big Bang Theory’ worked on the waste disposal system for NASA!

How do toilets work in space?

Since there is a constraint on resources on a space expedition, scientists have come up with ingenious ways to make toilets work. They work on the basic principle of suction and airflow. Anything discarded as waste from the human body is pulled into a funnel where fans run at high speed. It works on the same idea as a vacuum cleaner. Feces are flushed using the same air fan principle. 90% of the waste is recycled. However, there are efforts to increase this to 98% before the Mars mission.

Of course, there are already toilets in space, many Russian ones orbiting too. But, there can often be problems in the simplest of designs. This new Microgravity Toilet brings, with it, some significant improvements. The system itself has to be perfected in every way. There cannot be a chance for an escape or a leak. It could prove to be quite a difficult situation if something like that were to happen. This is another way the NASA Microgravity Toilet stands out.

How is it an improvement?

The first is the size of it. Older models are quite huge and even cause issues due to the size. This toilet is 28 inches tall, half the size of the Russian ones in orbit, and weighs about 100 pounds. Its size can allow it to fit inside the NASA Orion capsules. These are the ones that are going to be returning NASA astronauts from the Moon or towards Mars in the future.

Next comes one of the biggest step-ups in design. This toilet’s seat is slightly tilted and sitting at a higher position. This is so it can be accommodating to men and women both. This is also because NASA intends to send the first female astronaut on the Moon. The older models were more suited to the use of men.

There are some people whose kindness, compassion, and selflessness precede them. You might not know them personally, but just knowing of them will be a grounding experience. Meet Muhammad Fareed Qureshi, who is the epitome of such people.

Larger Than Life People

Muhammad Fareed Qureshi is the rickshaw driver who offers free service to people. And not just any regular customer, but all those with any and every kind of disability. You’ll see him helping blind people into his rickshaw and earnestly taking them to their homes. Children with polio, people with paralysis, others are what constitute as his favorite customers.

They were hailing from Sehra Meel, Muzaffarabad, this larger than life person began his service to others eight years ago. But eight years ago, something happened that shattered him too.

A Love Like No Other

Eight years ago, Fareed Qureshi’s wife got injured in an accident when their roof fell on her and damaged her spine. She got paralyzed after that and also lost her sight. As painful as this experience must have been, they also faced difficulties getting her admitted into a hospital.

Qureshi notes, in those few hours full of pain, his wife departed the world. You have to see it to believe it, his voice broke as he mentioned her death, and he almost broke into tears.

It was for the love of his wife that he started his free rickshaw service, and eight years forward, he’s helped countless people in need.

Sham Idrees was part of the group of Pakistani-Canadian Youtubers that changed the game a few years ago. It’s fair to say they were among the few people who exhibited what vlogging was and took it from there!

Idrees and his wife, Froggy, have been a part of several controversies, and it seems all their life is also about clickbait. Is this 10-year-old daughter coming out of nowhere, even a prank?

The Story Behind

Idrees claims that at the age of 19 or 20, he decided to get married on a whim. He admits that he did not know what he was thinking about too. As a result, the marriage inevitably failed within a few months, and the couple went their separate ways.

It wasn’t until a few months later when Sham Idrees found out he would have a baby. There came Dua Idrees, ten years ago, who has now shown her face to the public.

When responding to questions about this being a prank, Idrees revealed more about his daughter.

He said that back when she was born, he was starting his career. At that moment, he had to decide whether he would keep Dua in the limelight or not. Now a decade later, which makes Dua still reasonably young, he feels it’s okay for her to be on social media.

Punjab Rozgar Scheme 2020: Everything You Need To Know To Apply

You may have noticed that since yesterday, everyone is talking about the Punjab Rozgar Scheme 2020. Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has launched the rozgar scheme, allowing young individuals to take loans up to PKR 10 million to start their own business.

The scheme will promote employment across the province. Interested individuals who are in-between the age of 20-50 can apply for the loans. However, they will be required to have a valid CNIC to be eligible.

Moreover, applicants will have to submit a fee of Rs. 2000 (the amount is non-refundable) once the application has been officially submitted. The overall aim of the scheme is to distribute as many as PKR 30 bn among youngsters and provide 1.6 million job opportunities.

Existing businesses must have a viable business plan that focuses on sustaining the impact of COVID-19

Residential / Commercial / Industrial / Agricultural Property/vehicle has a clean title and clear access (acceptable to the bank) and valued by banks approved appraiser as per the bank’s policy. B. The property should be in the name of the borrower or blood relative of individual/proprietor/partners. C. Documentation shall be as per bank credit policy / legal division. Charge / hypothecation on fixed / current assets as per internal / external regulations.

Individuals can visit the website to apply for the rozgar scheme. They will be required to fill a form with authentic details for verification purposes.

Keep in mind that eligible applicants will not be able to download the application form; it must be done online. After opening the portal, applicants are required to click on ‘Applicant Signup.’ Once you’ve clicked on it, you will be redirected to a form asking for your necessary details.

These details include your full name, CNIC number, Email ID, mobile number, and password of choice. Once you have officially registered, you can log in on the portal with your verified credentials.

Once you have landed on the main page, you will see an option reading ‘New Application’ on the top right. Select that option, and you will be shown a list of required documents needed to fill the application with correct information.

A profile will then be created with your name and information. After all the personal data has been saved, you will then be required to fill in some details regarding your business.

Once that is done, you’ll be required to answer what kind of loan are you wanting. Under the section, you’ll be required to give a breakdown of the cost you are seeking. Here, you’ll also be required to share details of a personal guarantee you will provide for security purposes.

You will continue to provide the information asked, last but not least, you will be asked if you agree with all the terms and conditions. A second confirmation will be taken in case if you have any doubts. If you are satisfied with your application, submit it officially on the Punjab Rozgar Scheme 2020 portal, you’ receive a message on the registered number with the application registration number, and you’ll be asked to submit a minimal fee of PKR 2000.

Like everything over time, Educational methods have also evolved. There are instances where children are taught in school through personalized tablets rather than just notebooks. Where a pencil box used to be the most extraordinary item in a child’s bag, it is now a thing of the past. What fascinates these children is technology? This gives rise to the much-inquired query; should Phones Be Prohibited to School Going Students?

It is quite understandable when younger children are not given charge of their cell phones. That is until parents believe they may be of a mature age. But what about mature enough children bringing the said phones to school? We must explore this,

A Major Distraction (Infinite Scrolling):

Once a student is permitted to bring a phone to school, they will find themselves going through it most of the day. School can often be a time for students to socialize, learn, explore, and even gain an interest in sports. The last part is not for every student since some children/teenagers spend time in a library, classroom, or just roaming about. How do you stop someone from using the phone during class, when you know they will use it under the table when scolded for it?

Spending time scrolling through social media apps takes away the effort one makes to stay in school. This includes learning something educational or picking up new passions. Imagine if there was a student with a flair for drama and acting, but when rehearsals were taking place, they played mobile games on a LAN network with friends. Now, the child is not to blame here since games do attract. However, they missed an opportunity without knowing they did. This is just one example. Imagine someone missing out on learning how the principle of physics and chemistry work because the video on Instagram seemed funny to watch mid-class.

Staying within the technological loop (A Benefit):

As big of a distraction a phone can be, it can be considered cruel to keep students entirely away from it. What if the student uses their phone in school, but they are merely expanding upon what their teacher taught? What if all they are doing is searching it on Google or YouTube? Of course, a counter-argument proposes that this is precisely why a library or a computer lab exists, but there are times when those are either closed or inaccessible.

After all, the students get their doses of phone usage at home, so why use it in school? However, What if they need to call and inform their parents of something? Communication is a huge factor in favor of the students, but this only applies to higher grade students. Primary and Secondary students have no use for a phone other than playing games.

So what to do?

What one can do, as in-charge of a school, is permit students to bring phones to school, but those who are in the ninth grade or above. This applies to any education system. The benchmark should be set at ninth grade or above. They may use it during break time or the 5-10 minutes between classes. However, when the teacher is speaking and teaching, the phones should be either on the desk or in the bag. According to the writer of this article, it does not use the phone during class. The student is missing out on precious minutes of education that the hard-working parents are paying for.

So, summing up, younger school-going children don’t have a critical use of a phone and need not bring one to school, but it can be allowed for above ninth grade. The institute need not provide them with a Wi-Fi connection as that will only increase their use.

Crunchy roast chicken

This dish is different because it involves BAKING. Take boneless chicken. Now dip it into buttermilk or sour cream. Then take the chicken pieces and roll them up in Pringles.
