The Everchanging Field Of Robotics:

The title suggests something that runs through our minds every day. Even if you’re not that much into tech, you must still be aware of what the principles behind robotics is. No, we are not referring to the Asimov laws of robotics but the general stuff behind it. People often associate the concepts of artificial intelligence and deep learning with robotics.

The concepts state that, in order to function on its own, a robot can be taught. It works as a learning computer of sorts, allowing humans to program it in such a way. If there is a robot that is cleaning the dishes, it is because it has been programmed to do exactly that. Maybe, through learning, it can clean them more efficiently. In light of this, Samsung has come up with a new robot. It feeds you food and does your laundry!

A New Samsung Robot:

At the online CES convention this week, Samsung had a few words to say. They are going above and beyond to show the world how well they can perform. Just yesterday, we saw the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S21. So now what have we seen? There has seemingly been a development for a robot. The robot is being called ‘The Bot Handy’. It has a pivotal arm with a three-point brace, allowing movement on a wider axis.

It has cameras installed on it. These allow for object detection as well as detecting the material of objects. This way, it knows which object to grasp harder and which one to not grasp tight. The cameras also allow for it to sense its environment while moving. It will detect, list and sort laundry and will even pour you a glass of water after a long, hard day!

Towards An Age Of Intelligence:

This advancement tells us that we are moving at an appropriate pace. Whether it is handy robots or self-driving cars, good development is being made. We hope the Samsung robot does not turn against its owners and go on a rage-filled frenzy!

Telecom Sector Contributes PKR 278b To National Exchequer In 2020: PTA Annual Report

Islamabad (January 15, 2021) Telecom sector has emerged as a prominent contributor to Pakistan’s economy and the sector contribution to the national exchequer has shown an increase of 129% in the year 2020 when compared to the year 2019, despite the economy being under pressure due to COVID effects. As per Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) Annual Report 2020, released here today, the sector contributed PKR 278 billion (including PTA deposits to the national exchequer) in FY 2020 as compared to PKR 121 billion in FY 2019 registering Year-on-Year growth of 129%.

A surge in demand for telecom services due to lockdown resulted in significant growth not only in the subscriber base but also in the usage of telecom services. Today, data usage stands at 4,498 Peta Bytes(FY2020) as compared to 2,545 Peta Bytes (FY 2019) showing a growth of over 77%. This substantial growth would not have been possible if the networks were not upgraded. The country currently has international bandwidth connectivity of 3.1 Tera Bytes and around 47,000 cell sites, of which 90% are 4G enabled sites.

According to the PTA Annual Report, in the last five years, total broadband subscriptions in the country grew by 175%. Today broadband subscribers have crossed 90 million showing a growth of around 8% in FY2020. Pakistan has a total broadband penetration of 42.2% in FY2020. The telecom networks are currently available for 87% of the population and PTA is working with operators to increase their network coverage for the remaining 13% of unserved people of the country. The total teledensity now stands at 82% with over 172 million mobile subscribers and 2.2 million fixed-line subscribers.

In 2020, the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) across the economy was affected due to global lockdowns, however, the telecom sector made an iconic share of 25% (USD 623 million) in the total FDI made in the country. Total investment made by the local operators grew by 14.25% and a total of USD 734 million were invested locally. Total revenues of the sector reached PKR 537 billion in FY 2020, which was mainly generated by mobile sector. The financial gains have been equally enjoyed by telecom consumers, the affordability of telecom services in Pakistan have improved over the years and currently the per GB broadband prices are as low as USD 0.20 which is amongst the lowest in the region.

Similarly, due to the Device Identification & Registration System (DIRBS) introduction government revenues increased many folds with tax collection on handset imports. The local manufacturing of handsets has enlivened the telecom ecosystem, with growth in local 4G device manufacturing crossing 34%. Pakistan experienced trials of 5G services which were one of the few firsts in South Asia. PTA is aiming for spectrum auction of LTE, VoLTE services in 2021 as a precursor to 5 G. The regulator is also gearing up for auction of spectrum for high-speed broadband services in AJK & GB.

PTA Annual Report informs that the regulator this year awarded 110 licenses for different telecom services and issued 91 commencement of service certificates to the operators. PTA conducted QoS surveys across Pakistan for data, voice and SMS services and the operators were directed to take corrective measures where they underperformed. PTA conducted a number of successful raids against illegal VoIP setups this year to curb grey telephony.

The Annual Report further revealed that PTA was ranked as 4thgeneration telecom regulator by the ITU, which places PTA in the top five regulators of Asia-Pacific region. The Pakistan Citizen Portal recognized PTA as the best performing organization in complaint redressal satisfaction. The above performance is a testimony that the sector and the regulator are moving in the right direction under the continuous support and guidance of the Government of Pakistan in the form of prudent policies and directions that spur the growth of digital technologies.

While commenting on the situation arising due to Covid-19, the Annual Report further added that year 2020 was an extraordinary year around the world, unexpected, unforeseen and unanticipated events unfolded and changed the way the world was functioning. The new normal, replaced the focus of the world on telecoms and digitalization, the global telecom sector responded to the demands and so did Pakistan. Being at the forefront, while the country was acclimatizing to the changed conditions towards normalization, PTA assured network upgradations, traffic optimization, load balancing that resulted in uninterrupted service provision.

Punjab Govt To Shift The University Of Health Sciences To Solar Power

In a country that suffers terribly from electricity load shedding, it is high time it adopted alternatives of the traditional electricity generating methods. One of the most common alternatives is electricity generation from solar power. Since Pakistan gets quite a bit of it, solar energy is, by far, the best option. And people have indeed started shifting to it, albeit slowly and gradually. But if you want something to become common, installing it in prominent places is the way to go. Punjab Govt has possibly adopted the same strategy.

People in Punjab had already started using solar panels for electricity generation. If you travel to Punjab, even the smaller rural areas, on each house, you will find 2 to 6 panels. But that is for a small village house. For a structure way larger, the number of panels also increases greatly. So imagine the number when I tell you that the structure is the University of Health Sciences. Moreover, since the university teaches hard sciences, one can safely assume that there must be scientific laboratories that need constant electricity. Such a building has been selected to shift to solar power completely, announced the Punjab govt.

The energy minister, Akhtar Malik, says that this way, they will be able to reduce a huge chunk of electricity costs. The plant to supply the university with electricity will be 1 megawatt.

The minister has issued the order for a 1-megawatt plant, but he has also instructed authorities to finish the energy audit of UOHS in 10 days. This must ensure that the 1-megawatt solar system does not waste if the actual consumption of university requires more electricity.

But what led to the Punjab government taking such a decision?

As it turns out, the government has to pay PKR 37 billion just for electricity. Also, there are 95,000 government connections in Punjab. So this is the stepping stone of a greater move; converting all the government connections to the solar model. And Akhtar Malik reiterates it:

“Government connections across Punjab will be shifted to solar to reduce the high energy bills,” said Malik.

Let’s hope that the country sees the advantages of using electricity from a renewable source and not just Punjab, but the whole country adopts this practice. Until then, we will be dependent on the existing modes of electricity generation and used to the nationwide blackouts.

When it comes to pricing, Samsung has priced the Galaxy Buds Pro at $199, whereas Apple prices its Airpods Pro at $250, making it more expensive than Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Pro.

Since the Galaxy Buds Pro has just been released, there is no definite conclusion that can be drawn as of yet. Once more people get to use them, after a while, it would be better to decide which wireless earbuds one should opt for. However, since the AirPods Pro was released back in October 2019, they received a lot of praise from tech enthusiasts.

Female Polio Workers Walk Through Deep Snow On Duty

Living in the cities where we do not get much snow, we do not realize the issues that befall people who get tons of it. And maybe, in developed countries, it might not be that much of a problem because for some time now, they have figured out how to work around the snow infested days and clear it. But in Pakistan, a developing nation, the situation is quite different. We have Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan, that floods during rains, and we also have cities that become choked when it snows. But does that stop our polio workers?

A video was recently uploaded on Twitter that showed two female polio workers making their way across a snowy route in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The snow came up to their waists. Every step they took would sink deep. The clothes they wore seem like daily wear, shalwar kameez, and they had no gloves.

People who have lived in these areas will tell you that while it snows, it is not that cold, but when the snow settles, it gets unbearably cold. Plus, as they venture deep into the snow, they would feel tired with every step, but they cannot because that could very possibly lead to frostbite. Yet, they continue on their journey because they have to deliver the vaccines to people living there.

When Twitterati saw this struggle, they couldn’t help but admire and appreciate the struggle the workers were going through. Moreover, they felt for the workers, who they said, were getting negligible salaries compared to the struggle they were enduring.

People also shared the right tools polio workers should be provided with, which could help move through the terrain. It could very well limit the feet, sinking multiple feet under the snow. Moreover, the dresses could be one that does not soak in the snow and make their clothes all wet.

But as people admired the polio workers and mentioned what further measures they could utilize, there was another narrative that appeared in the comments. The narrative was to stop romanticizing the struggle. And it made quite some sense too. Instead of just labeling them heroes and getting rid of all the responsibilities from your shoulders, we need to understand that there is no point in forcing them to be heroes. Instead, we should consider them human employees who deserve the right tools and equipment to carry out their jobs.

Maybe, if we, as a whole nation, unite to present this point to higher authorities, the right kind of action can be taken.

Before the new year dawned, Babar Azam’s image was smeared in the mud by the revelations of a woman who made huge claims against him. Call it the new year, new me, or a change of heart, but the woman now takes back her words.

The Pretext Of The New Stand

In December, a woman named Hamiza took to social media to speak at length about her illicit relationship with Babar Azam. Their relationship dates back to when he had no job and or money. Hamiza claimed that Babar Azam not only sexually abused her but also was dependent on her financially. 

She financed many of his needs and claims; she even helped him become a cricketer. She sought justice because Babar Azam apparently did not marry her after all this and left as soon as he joined the national cricket team.

The National Hall Pass 

This scandal obviously spread like wildfire, given that the claims were atrocious. Moreover, Pakistan’s cricketers have all had one or more scandals attached to their name, all of which are shocking. As a result, while several people denied these rumours, many also started believing Hamiza.

Hamiza also went to the extent of swearing whilst putting her hand on the Quran. She spoke at length about the necessity of doing this the “right” way, too, but how many “right” ways do we have?

Fast Forward To Today

Today a new video has been released by Hamiza, in which she claims the exact opposite. The woman has taken a 180 degrees turn, and there is also no Quran insight — shall we expect one religiously emotional video to back this claim?

Now Hamiza claims emphatically that she never had any relationship at all with Babar Azam. Moreover, she suggests that if any previous claims of her are floating on social media, they do so without her agreement.

What’s What?

Though we may not know the truth behind Hamiza and Babar Azam scandal, one thing is for sure. This scandal will bring a bad name to any woman who actually tries to take a stand against any influential man in Pakistan. Just as Hamiza made huge claims but now denies a relationship altogether, others will believe women make claims out of boredom.

HEC Announces New Policy For PhD

Education plays a crucial part in attaining the bright future of any country. While in the past, education has not gotten much attention, these days, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has been quite active. When before, the most focus of HEC was on scholarships for Pakistani students in local universities and abroad, the focus these days has shifted towards policies.

Revised policy for PhD

You must have heard of how they had recently ruled out two year Bachelor programs. And now they revised another policy. This time it’s regarding Ph.D. The revision was formalized on January 1, 2021. The policy is that people can now enroll in PhD programs right after completing their bachelor’s degree. They don’t need to do MS or MPhil to enroll in PhD anymore.

The important part, though, is that that bachelor’s degree should have been attained after a four-year program. And the duration of the PhD Degree can range from 3 years to 8 years; it will depend on how the candidate wants to pace their education. Moreover, you don’t even need to have relevant work experience to make you eligible for doing PhD in that particular discipline.

HEC Seems Serious About The Policy

Should the universities fail to comply with the revised notification, HEC will take immediate and strict action against the universities. The action can range from warning and suspension to revocation of the NOC.

But another drama has ensued following the revision of policy. The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) has outright rejected this notification by HEC since they do not believe it to be the right decision.

And let’s not forget the evergreen dialogue Mahira became famous for, ‘Mummy yeh aap kia keh rahi hain,’ was also from this drama.

2. Zindagi Gulzar Hai

There are very few Pakistani TV Dramas Fawad Khan has worked in, but the ones he has worked in are masterpieces. Zindagi Gulzar hai is one of them. Playing Ashar against Sanam Saeed, they produce a drama that is the epitome of finesse. And one would never forget that miraculous teacup, or else Kashaf would never have agreed to marry Ashar, and we know it.

Khaani features Feroz Khan. If looking at just Feroz’s character arch, one can say that it is not too different from how he was in Gul e Rana. This seems reasonable, considering it won’t take too long to move from one location to another.

The ministry of IT supports the project due to its prospect and range. It has a wide scope and is definitely worth an investment. If it can move towards other institutions with vast areas, it’ll be extremely useful and widely accepted. The service features state-of-the-art technology embedded within the vehicles, with a simple yet elegant design.

Imam-Ul-Haq To Miss Home Series Against South Africa

Opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq will not be available for the home series against South Africa following his thumb injury.

The 25-year-old, who sustained the injury during the practice session while touring New Zealand, recently underwent scans after which the doctors have suggested him to rest for one and a half week.

Imam who was part of the training camp held for the South Africa series was not allowed by the doctors to take part in the sessions. “I have been barred from even taking part in practice sessions,” informed Imam.

Earlier, Imam was sent home from New Zealand without playing a single match following his injury. He has been going under treatment but hasn’t fully recovered yet.

Meanwhile, the Chief Selector Muhammad Wasim, as his first assignment will be announcing the Test squad for home series against South Africa on Friday, where Imam won’t be part of the selection for 20-member squad.

Pakistan will be hosting South Africa for two Test matches. The series opener will be contested in Karachi from January 26 while Rawalpindi will be hosting the second game from February 4. The Test series will be followed by three day and night T20Is to be held in Lahore on February 11, 13 and 14 respectively.

Whereas, Hasan Ali who recently scored a century in the final of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy to draw the match between Central Punjab and KPK, is also in line for a first Test appearance in two years.

Following his performance in the final, he expressed his wish to be selected for the home series but left the decision on the new Chief Selector.

Cadbury Responds To Hate For Featuring Gay Couple In Ad

Amongst the most loved chocolates, Cadbury probably takes the crown; at least chocolate lovers would claim. And aside from good product quality, they also make good ads; don’t tell me you didn’t hum to ‘Dairymilk ka postman aya,’ or that you have forgotten the ‘tou Phir Kuch meetha hojaye?’

But these were both Cadbury’s ads for Pakistan. The Mondelez owned brand’s recent campaign for the UK has received some backlash. The campaign was made for the product Creme Egg. The campaign has many visuals, and amongst those many visuals, one features a gay couple biting on to the chocolate.

The homophobia, subtle and otherwise, flowed on to Twitter. Some were blatantly announcing their homophobic beliefs and called it names, while others thought they were presenting a sophisticated argument. In reality, however, it was clear that they, too, were clearly homophobic.

But what was the idea behind this particular campaign? The idea was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cadbury Creme Eggs by showing that the product can be eaten in different ways by different people. So you can lick it, dip it, or even cook it. And anyone can eat it as long as you are doing it with your loved ones. But the loved ones featured were a gay couple. And people said this was an unnecessary addition. You could also see supporters of Cadbury too though. They did make an interesting point that for years on, viewers have seen heterosexual couples get featured for even more unnecessary scenes, so this really is homophobia speaking.

“To anyone “offended” by this: you realize that we’ve seen a straight couple make out thousands of times on television already, and we don’t complain. wonder why you are?”

The brand releases the statement

But Cadbury decided to respond to the whole fiasco. They emailed their statement to a UK publication.

“Cadbury has always been a progressive brand that spreads a message of inclusion, whether it is through its products or brand campaigns. We are proud of our Golden Goobilee advert, which celebrates the many ways that everyone can enjoy a Cadbury Creme Egg. To illustrate this and showcase the joy our products bring, a clip of a real-life couple sharing a Cadbury Creme Egg was included in the advert.”

Moreover, they also explored the angle of not representing social distancing in the COVID era. They said:

“The actors featured in the film were from the same household, so they were egg-static to share a delicious Cadbury Creme Egg together! We also ensured that social distancing and stringent hygiene measures were taken when shooting the new advert.”

It is nice to see that brands do address concerns raised by the viewers, but they do not shy away from standing by their opinions.

Man Attempts Sending A ‘Samosa’ To Space & Here’s What Happened!

With everything that happened in the past year, there is nothing that could surprise us anymore. Whether it is mysterious discoveries or contact with aliens, the past year was extremely eventful. Now, with the year 2021 upon us, there has been an extremely unusual event that has taken place.

The Samosa-Space Launch:

According to a report, an Indian eatery known as Chai Walla made three attempts to send Samosa to space. Niraj Gadher, the Chai Walla owner, used helium balloons to launch the samosa. During the first attempt, the balloons slipped out of his hands, while in the second try, the helium in the balloons was insufficient to carry Samosa into space.

Niraj Gadher, the owner of Chai Walla, claimed while speaking to news site “API” that he had this idea as a joke once, then he decided to act upon it as a laughing matter.

The whole ordeal video was posted on Youtube, where Niraj shared the entire event on Chaiwalla’s official channel, where it has been viewed by over 100,000 times.

The video shows how the samosa was launched with helium balloons and a GoPro camera along with a GPS tracker to track its location. Gadher claimed that he had faced numerous failures in his life, but it has never made him afraid to try new things.

In the video, it can also be seen that the balloon was launched from England and landed all the way to Picardie, France. Instagrammer Alex Mathon found the rubble of the crash-landed Samosa and the equipment that can be seen towards the end of the video.

Why Would He Opt For Samosa’s Though?

In case you have wondered, why would ChaiWalla opt for a Samosa to launch into space, the eatery is amongst one of the world’s top places and is one of the most well-known restaurants with Indian Cuisines. This does not surprise as Desis, who comprise almost 1.5 billion people of the planet (if you add the populations of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh), consider Samosas a must-have snack. A video went viral a few years back in which Americans who were not familiar with the taste of Samosa can be seen trying them out for the first time.

Let’s hope the Samosa makes it to space one day, so maybe we’ll see the extra-terrestrials trying them out for the first time, which is not impossible considering all the bizarre and unusual events have been taking place.

Do you all recall the Ali Zafar Meesha Shafi scandal? There have been conflicting statements regarding that ever since the issue started. Some have supported Meesha as she led the torch for MeToo against Ali Zafar, while others supported Ali. Now, another woman has filed a harassment lawsuit against the singer.

An activist by the name of Leena Ghani has filed a suit for PKR 500 Million at Sindh High Court. The petitioner said that she was first harassed in 2014 and has continued to be harassed after that. In her lawsuit, she has detailed all the dialogues that have made her feel uncomfortable.

The statements referenced are indeed very distasteful. And if proved true, it will be a very disappointing addition to Ali Zafar’s track record. See Points 8, 9, and 10 in the images.

Moreover, she also brought in the tweets by Ali Zafar specifically posted on 20th and 22nd December 2020. She said that these two tweets were made with malicious intent and were based on lies. The activist claims that the tweets make the claim Leena was behind the campaign Meesha started. This episode has caused her mental anguish. It also damaged her reputation to a somewhat degree.

Not to forget the Meesha Shafi scandal where the two singers had an active battle on social media, the activist has ensured that the accused cannot cause further harm by talking about it on any platform.

The Sessions Judge Lahore has issued a notice for 25th January to Ali Zafar.

In this petition, she has also stated that the statement she made on 19th April 2018 be declared true. And as compensation for the mental anguish and damage to her reputation, Ali Zafar should reimburse PKR 500 million to her.
