Federal Shariat Court Ruled In The Favor Of Interest-Free Banking

On Thursday, the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) declared the prevailing interest-based banking system against the Sharia law. The court directed the government to replace it with an interest-free system by the end of 2027.

The verdict was announced in a long-pending case on Riba (interest). The court directed the government to facilitate all loans under an interest-free system. The FSC gave its verdict after the supreme court had referred the case back to the court in 2002. Followed by the appeals against the decision of the FSC.

The Ruling Of The Case

In its long-awaited verdict, the court ruled that the elimination of interest was a religious and legal obligation. Since the parliament had already agreed to make Sharia-compliant laws.

In the written judgment, the bench said the prohibition of Riba is the cornerstone of the Islamic economic system.

“We have decided that every loan which extracts any additional amount upon the principal from the debtor is Riba, hence, any transaction that contains Riba even at the slightest level falls within the category of Riba thus prohibited. Furthermore, all the prevailing forms of interest, either in the banking transactions or in private transactions fall within the definition of Riba, according to the verdict.”

“All laws and regulations that facilitate interest are considered illegal and such laws should be abolished from June 1, 2022.” Further adding.

The court further directed the government to take internal and external loans under an interest-free system and added that an interest-free system. Citing that it would be more beneficial. However, it acknowledged that the transition towards an Islamic system would take time but the bank’s deposit “could be cleared of riba immediately.”

Response To The Ruling

Finance Minister Miftah Ismail took to twitter to share his thoughts,

“We welcome the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) decision in the Riba case. The government and SBP will carefully study this important decision and then seek guidance and clarification from the FSC about the process, steps, and time frame to implement this decision.”

Meanwhile, the federal government had argued that the interest-based banking system could not be eradicated as it would damage the already fragile economy. They mentioned that they have supported a parallel interest-free banking system already functioning in Pakistan.

Islamabad – 28 April 2022: Continuing its focus on driving digital inclusion, Jazz invested PKR 14.9 billion under its ‘4G for all’ ambition during the first quarter of 2022, taking its overall investment in Pakistan to US$10.2 billion.

A majority of its capital expenditure during this quarter was on the addition of approximately 500 new 4G sites, reaching a population coverage of its 4G service to 55.7%. This network expansion played a key role in increasing Jazz’s 4G customer base by 27.8 percent YoY to reach 36.7 million while its overall subscriber base touched close to 75 million.

The performance of its digital services during the quarter solidified Jazz’s position as the country’s leading digital operator. Its digital financial service, JazzCash, reached 15.7 million monthly active users and 145, 000 active merchants. Its self-care app, Jazz World, continued to enjoy strong customer adoption levels with monthly active users growing by 23.1% YoY to reach 10.5 million.

Jazz CEO Aamir Ibrahim, said, “We are continuously investing in expanding the outreach and capacity of our 4G network mainly in semi-urban and rural areas to empower the underserved, especially women, to benefit from the digital services portfolio we offer. Jazz remains committed to addressing the barriers to an inclusive digital ecosystem, including device affordability, so our fellow citizens can access health, financial, and other life-enhancing services through mobile broadband.”

Other streaming and entertainment platforms such as Tamasha, Bajao, Jazz Cricket, and Deikho, also enjoyed further growth as their quarterly usage increased multiple times YoY.

With Eid just around the corner, it’s time to take a look at our cookbooks and figure out what to serve to our guests. Keep in mind, it will be hot this Eid, limit your time in the kitchen to save yourself from excessive trouble. I believe you should serve something that is not only unique and tasty but should also leave your guests feeling refreshed.

Here are some recipes that we have grouped together for you to try making this Eid:

Doodh Sawayyian

Eid festivities always fall short if there is no vermicelli served. All you need to do is prepare the vermicelli by heating them with oil. Boil milk with sugar on low heat till it turns thicker, add in the prepared vermicelli and voila, its ready to be served. Personally I don’t like the garnishing; the badaam, pista and the likes of such, I like it better without these items, but if you have a knack for these items, then don’t stop yourself from turning this yummy dish even better.

Kheer

Another one of our customary Eid dishes; kheer. Just recently, my mother happened to make kheer that tasted just like ‘methayi’, we had bowls upon bowls of that divine sweetness. The secret to kheer lies in the patience with which you let it sit on the stove and cook. All you need is milk, grounded rice and sugar, leave it on the stove for at least 5 hours and you will get to revel in one of the most brilliant tasting delicacies that the festival of Eid has to offer.

Ras Malai

This is another absolutely tasty dish to serve on Eid. In my experience, even people who do not generally prefer sweet dishes tend to enjoy ras malai a lot. To prepare ras malai you need to prepare two different parts of it. The ‘ras’ (alternatively, the thickened milk) and the rasmalayi balls.

For the ras all you need is whole milk, boil it till it thickens, and add cardamom and saffron till the appropriate taste in dispensed throughout the ras.

For the balls; a bit more technique and patience is required. Milk is boiled and vinegar or lemon juice is added to it so that it may curdle. Once the milk is curdled, the water is drained away and the material that is left behind is known as paneer. The paneer is then crushed and made into a fine dough from which small balls are made. These balls are then dipped into the sweetened milk.

Just a point to note: for the perfect soft balls; add some water to the boiling hot milk to bring its temperature down. Super-hot milk will produce harder paneer and thus harder ras malai balls.

Falooda

Now what sets this dessert apart is that it packs multiple flavors into one dish. Since it’s the seasons of mango, I suggest you go ahead and try out the mango falooda recipe. I am sure it can liven up your platter.

For a mango falooda all you require is mango puree, Jam e Shirin and some chopped up mango for the topping.

Blend the mangos and add in some cream if you want to thicken the mixture. You will also need to use the Jam e Shirin in its packaged form and thus I suggest you limit the quantity of Jam e Shirin that you add to your falooda.

Line the bottom with chunks of mango and a lining of Jam e Shirin, cover it with mango puree and then add some more mango chunks on the top of the mango puree layer.

Custard Fruit Trifle

It might seem a bit unorthodox, but trust me this dish always proves to be a godsend when kids come to visit on Eid. No kid turns down custard and jelly, add in some mangoes and bananas and you are all set to entertain even the pickiest of all children who will come to visit you.

In a trifle, the layering is the key to its success. You can line the bottom of the container with cake or biscuit, add a layer of custard, jelly and fruits, layer it again with cake or biscuits, cover this layer with custard. Sprinkle the top of the custard with jelly, fruits and crushed biscuits/cake. Presenting it in a glass bowl will add to the beauty of the dish.

Cheese Cakes

The no bake cheesecake is not only easy to whip up it also a mouthwatering delicacy fit for a royal fleet. The no bake cheesecake, if made properly might be the one that sets your Eid food items apart from those of your relatives. (And we women sure enjoy being remembered for our achievements in cooking now, don’t we?)

The Best Mango Desserts You Should Try This Summer

All you need is take some lemon juice (freshly squeezed lemons would be best), sour cream, condensed milk and whisk them all together. The lemon juice is what gives the cheesecake its electrifying taste.

For the base just crush the biscuits and mix them together with butter. Then line the base with this mixture and even it out. Then on top of the base add in the whisked mixture. Once done, put it in the fridge to let it set for at least 2 hours. Serve it by topping it with mint garnishing or if you are feeling a bit adventurous, cut mangoes in small cubes and sprinkle them on the top.

Banana Crunchballs

This one will surely be an instant hit with the children. Take some bananas, cut them into small pieces. Melt some chocolate chips and keep some crushed peanuts/almonds or sprinkles aside. Dip the banana pieces into the melted chocolate and then instantly afterwards dip the chocolate covered banana into the bowl bearing the peanuts, almonds or sprinkles. Cool these pieces overnight and by morning you will have delightful little treats to serve your guests.

Banana Sponge Cake

This is not only a standalone dessert, but coupled with vanilla ice cream or some cream it can be transformed into an another desert altogether. For banana sponge cake, you would need to blend some bananas and make a banana puree of sorts. To this mixture all you need to add are eggs, flour, baking powder and just a hint of vanilla essence. Blend the ingredients together to make a very smooth mixture and then bake it.

The writer of Mere Paas Tum Ho randomly decided to take a screenshot of Mahira Khan’s own post and put it up on Twitter. Mahira Khan had put up a picture of herself whilst she was acting in a drama written by Khalil Ur Rehman. She was playing the role of ‘shano’ in “Sadqay Tumhare”. Have a look at the picture here:

The writer took the picture and tweeted about how he will always curse himself for casting her in this “sacred role”. This is also not the first time he has expressed these sentiments. What’s The Latest?

Kellogg’s partnered with a creative agency, NAKATOMI, to make a VR experience for a gut. The experience is basically set inside the human gut which Kellogg’s calls the ‘Gut Bacteria Reef’. It teaches you that your gut is like a coral reef. It is home to trillions of organisms that need very special nutrients to thrive.

In this VR experience, you get to follow the journey of Kellogg’s cereal through the human gut as the cereal’s fiber nourishes the good bacteria. The fiber allows them to grow and prevail over the bad bacteria.

Backed By Research

Kellogg’s does nothing without the backing of research. This campaign of theirs reflects findings from the CSIRO Institute of Research. The research shows that despite 50% of Australians experiencing gut health problems every year, two-thirds of Aussies are still not meeting the daily recommended intake of fiber.

The campaign also included a partnership with SEA Life Sydney Aquarium over the school holidays. The idea is to invite visitors to try the VR experience and get up close tp the organisms and diverse flora that live within our bodies. This is the best way to teach children about the importance of fiber in maintaining this ecosystem.

Standard Chartered’s Profits Soar By 101%

Overall revenue grew by 72% to deliver the highest ever quarterly revenue of PKR 14.3
billion. Net interest income grew by 36% year on year, primarily driven by volume upside from strong balance sheet growth. Non-funded income recorded a growth of 167%, impelled by strong performance in FX, derivatives, and securities trading. Operating expenses continue to be well managed through operational efficiencies and disciplined spending with an increase of 8% from comparative period last year. Moreover, robust recoveries of bad debts, coupled with prudent risk approach led to a net release of PKR 0.7 billion in Q1’22 compared to a net release of PKR 0.6 billion in the comparative period.

All businesses have positive momentum with strong growth in underlying drivers. This is
evident from pickup in net advances, which have grown by PKR 17.8 billion (up 8%) since the start of this year. This was a result of a targeted strategy to build profitable, high quality and sustainable portfolios. With a diversified product base, the Bank is well-positioned to cater to the needs of its clients. On the liabilities side, the Bank’s total deposits grew by PKR 23.2 billion (up 4%), whereas current and saving accounts grew by PKR 27.8 billion (up 5%) since the start of this year and comprise 93% of the deposit base.

The Bank continues to make good progress against its strategic priorities. The global network differentiates the Bank from its clients, bringing forth innovative solutions, product specialisation, and structured offshore offerings. The Bank strives to maximize its contribution to SBP initiatives on promoting housing finance and is consistently ranked among the top institutions. As of now over PKR 4 billion have been dispersed under Mera Pakistan Mera Ghar scheme. SCBPL is also amongst the top five contributors towards the Roshan Digital initiative and channeled remittances of over USD 350 million since inception and contributed USD 300 million to the investments in Naya Pakistan Certificate (NPC).

Apple has been promoting its phones and their undoubtedly impeccable camera quality in ways more than one. It’s hooked itself onto a ‘shot on iPhone’ strategy as of late and it’s making us hungry this time around. Here’s what’s being shot on iPhone!

What’s Going On?

Apple wanted to promote the camera capabilities of its iPhone 13 Pro. What better way to involve food in it somehow? So, Apple decided to create a spot called ’Poached’ for the ‘shot on iPhone series’. Poached would essentially cover Singapore’s national food, chicken rice! The idea is to keep two hawkers at the center as they struggle to find the perfect recipe and compete with each other along the way.

People have to take pictures of chicken and rice and add them to poach to participate in the challenge.

What Is It Showcasing?

This campaign may be focused on iPhone 13’s camera but it is showing a lot more. The campaign intends to showcase the war between the famous chicken rice stall Tian Tian and the stall just two doors down, Ah Tai Chicken. Both of these are over 20 years old.

A documentary was filmed by David Gelb, director of Jiro Dreams of Sushi and creator of Chef’s Table too on this. He aimed to highlight Singapore’s hawker culture and the chefs behind the food. Gelb added that there is little to no space in a hawker kitchen. So when we want to tell their story, we have to do it in a very natural and authentic way.

The Role iPhone 13 Plays

Gelb further added that when he started filming, he wished he could have a device like this. Filmmakers need supportive and excellent tools to be able tot tell their stories. The fact that with iPhone, entire generations have access to a phone with such impeccable recording qualities is insane.

On Apple’s part, this is also an incredible initiative to encourage people to use their iPhones to develop photography or filmmaking skills. You never know what touches a nerve where for people and how that may take them to a different point in their lives. Kudos to Apple!
