The update shall be rolled out in phases over the next few days, with all users getting it by the end of April 2018.

SZABIST Students Shine at SMUC 4.0

SMUC 4.0 (SZABIST Marketing University Competition) is a flagship event, organized by the students of SZABIST as a part of their marketing management course.

The aim of the event is to give our students an experiential learning platform where they can have hands-on marketing dynamics experience which they can relate to what they have learned in the classrooms.

Also, the student’s projects are whetted by the industry specialists and their feedbacks provide meaningful insights for their future learning.

SMUC 4.0, 2018 was a successful event it was attended by our prominent guest speakers from the industry namely Mr. Raheel Yousuf (Head of Digital Marketing – HBL), Ms. Uzma Khan (Head of Media – Unilever Pakistan) and Mr. Hasham Usmani (CEO – Stonehenge Communication) who shared their invaluable experiences of marketing with the students.
The SMUC 4.0 is based on the competition of Marketing Management projects in which 36 teams participated.

The theme of the event was Imagine, Believe and Achieve which was applied in the Brand audit between two brands and based on the insights the students have to choose one brand and proposed an effective communication strategy.

The panel of judges was comprised of industry stalwarts: Mr Arafat Hifazat (Convex Interactive Pvt Limited), Mr Faisal Bumbia (Bombi’s Group), Ms Bismah Usman ex-employee of Warid Telecommunication , Mr Ashhad Ahmed (Bosch Pharmaceuticals Pvt Limited), Mr Asad Nagaria (Daryland Pvt Ltd), Mr Danyal Qayam (14th Street Pizza), Mr Waleed Z.Ahsan (PSO) and Ms. Ayesha Umer (ex-employee of Telenor Pakistan). The projects were whetted scrupulously by the judges on all dimensions and as a result, two teams were finalized for the winning trophy, The Team Greyjoy won the first prize and the Team Ravenclaw won the runners-up trophy. The other 34 teams were acknowledged for their hard work and creativity.

Ms. Madiha Nayyar (Area Sales Manager of Nestle) awarded the trophies to the winning teams and she also enlightened the students and guests the dynamics of the Sales department. She also emphasized on the empowering and educating women, and encourage them to opt for new fields and prove their credentials.

The team of SMUC 4.0 acknowledges the support of Brandsynario in providing the students of SZABIST to market their credentials and their creative event.

The 8th PAS Awards ceremony was held at the Expo Centre Karachi on 14th April 2018.

Organised by Pakistan Advertisers Society, PAS Awards is one of the most prestigious and recognized award programmes of the marketing and advertising fraternity that honors ideas, strategy and creativity that works.

This year the awards were presented by Engro Corporation as its title sponsor in association with Leo Television Network. It featured the 15 regular categories, 12 Special Categories, and 3 special Awards and received more than 324 entries from the agencies and brands all across Pakistan and Iran.

PAS Awards 2018:

The show featured industry stalwarts from the field of marketing and advertising as award presenters. Some of the prominent personalities were Abbas Arslan, General Secretary PAS, Naveed Asghar CMO HBL, Mohammad Abid Sheikh, CEO, LEO Television Network, Muhammad Nasir Saleem, General Manager, BestSongs.pk, Syed Mazahir Hussain, Director Marketing, AAJ NEWS, Ali Asghar Jamali, CEO, Indus Motors, Mirza Uzair Baig, Director Marketing, Dunya TV, Javed Ahmed and Mujahid Hamid, the Jury Chair. They presented awards with some renowned names celebrities like Mussarat Misbah, Ronak Lakhani, Sheema Kirmani, Tooba Siddiqui, Mansha Pasha, Myra Khan, Angeline Malik, Komal Rizvi, Nimra Khan, Ghana Ali, Huma and Amir Adnan, Ali Kazmi and Maria Wasti.

The host for the award ceremony was Shafaat Ali and Veena Malik and the show featured some mesmerizing theatrical acts by Farooq Qaiser and a musical performance by Bilal Khan and Rachel Vicajji with other entertaining dance performances and skits. The Red carpet was hosted by Mashal Khan. The show concluded with the National Anthem performed by all the celebrities and industry people.

It seems like our actresses have made a mission to slam the concept that women who smoke are ‘characterless’, because of course according to some naysayers, smoking kills men’s lungs and women’s character.

When Mahira Khan’s pictures while smoking alongside Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor went viral on social media, the male chauvinists bashed the starlet for being herself.

But luckily, there were many people on the internet, which included the majority of celebrities, who showed support to Mahira Khan and tried to address that smoking is something very personal and we are nobody to criticize her.

When Mahira Khan was wrongly abused because of her snaps TWICE, it seems like the Pakistani actresses are trying to break this taboo by doing just what is least expected of them.

Last week, the Baaghi star Saba Qamar posted a picture on her Instagram account with a lit cigarette in her mouth, sending the message that smoking is injurious to all, not only women.

And today, we saw a Mehwish Hayat picture in which she is seen smoking.

As usual, the internet threw its barbs at Mehwish Hayat as well because we just can not tolerate a woman to smoke in public.

Renault Pakistan Website Officially Launched!

International automotive giant, Renault was eyeing Pakistan’s auto market for some time now. With the partnership with Al-Futaim (UAE) the company has made its first step of launching their vehicles in the country, by launching the Renault Pakistan Website.

Previously, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had met with Chairman and CEO Renault-Nissan, Carlos Ghosn at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos and invited Groupe Renault to consider Pakistan as their next investment destination, which they took positively.

Now, the Renault Pakistan Website is proof that something great is in store for the sector within the country as other international manufacturers including KIA and Hyundai are also going about their plans to bring their vehicles to Pakistan.

Previously, Renault was in talks with Ghandhara to bring their Duster SUV to the country, however, the association did not work out for the French automaker, thus they then partnered with Al-Futaim.

New Visa Policy For UAE Transit Passengers

United Arab Emirates (UAE) has devised a travel plan to allow entry visas to transit passengers across all the airports across the peninsula

Now the extravagant experience of visiting Dubai is about to get more dynamic for transiting passengers. Dubai Airports has proposed ‘Microcosm of Dubai’ as part of Dubai 10X Initiative, overseen by Dubai Future Foundation.

According to Khaleej Times, Dubai is formulating a plan to enable transit passengers to leave the airport and tour the Persian Gulf hot spot.

HOW COOL IS THAT?

However, passengers who are in transit for more than four hours will get the golden ticket to travel the town. The rest will just have the opportunity to enjoy a “virtual tour” of the city.

The average spends for each visitor in transit is AED9.

As per latest statistics, up to 4.5 million passengers on average transit through Dubai International Airport monthly, with a target of 20 million by 2020.

Massive Fire Breakouts in Al-Karam’s Bahadurabad Outlet!

In an unfortunate incident which occurred on the night of 12th April, Al-Karam’s Bahadurabad outlet was completely vanquished in a fire which had broken out in the 6-story building near Char-Minar Chowrangi.

Passerbyers had gathered around as they witnessed the huge outlet throwing out orange flames and smoke as firefighters tried their best to control the fire before it could spread across to Khaadi and Junaid Jamshed’s ‘J.’.

According to The Times of Karachi’s Facebook page, the outbreak injured 5 women, and fortunately, no fatal injuries or deaths have been reported.

Some sources are also saying that the fire had also found its way to Khaadi’s outlet, but was put out before extreme damage was possible.

Witnesses also shared their videos from the incident on different social media platforms to give insights about what had happened.

More than 8 fire brigade had arrived on the scene to rescue the civilians who were stuck in their homes as the fire continued to blaze.

The reason for the fire is still unknown, however, current reports suggest it started on the ground floor and worked its way up.

Pakistan Ranked 54th Among Nations on Tobacco Smoking!

Pakistan has reached yet another milestone – but this time, for all the wrong reasons

According to the Minister for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, Saira Afzal Tarar, Pakistan was ranked 54th amongst 84 countries with the highest prevalence of tobacco smoking.

This is a major cause for concern and the figures that have been revealed are staggering.

According to the Saira Afzal:

24 million (19.1%) are using tobacco in different forms in Pakistan.

That accounts for 15.6 million adults who currently smoke tobacco while the other 9.6 million adults use smokeless tobacco, Saira added.

According to the Pakistan Health Education Survey 1999, every day 5000 Pakistanis are admitted to the hospital due to tobacco use.

With the cost of smoking amounting to Rs. 143.209 billion and 160,189 deaths are a caused by the use of tobacco, the figures are a cause for concern.

Efforts have been made to control that and according to the minister, early detection and treatment of diseases caused by tobacco use were done in hospitals.

She said that Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD) and the provincial governments are taking steps for early detection and treatment caused by tobacco use.

According to her, the ministry has taken various steps to increase awareness among the masses. This includes mass media campaigns on tobacco control with the assistance of World Lung Foundation (2015, 2016). And with the support of the Federal Film Censor Board, a pilot advocacy campaign in cinema theaters across Pakistan.

In this campaign, two tobacco control messages, “Alive” and “Sponge” have been disseminated to all cinema THEATERS to air/broadcast them during their shows regularly.

Initially, the airport was to be named as Thar Airport and the insignia had also been installed atop the departure and arrival lounges.

However, it was later renamed after a peasant leader Mai Bakhtawar Lashari. She passed away on June 22, 1947, near the Jhudo town of Mirpurkhas district, fighting a feudal lord.

According to an official, the runway of the airport is 3 km long. The airport is said to consist of the newest and up-to-date machinery and equipment.

Mr. Bhutto-Zardari, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shad and other senior officials of the party and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) were also present at the inauguration.

The spokespersons for the CM House and Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) stated that the PPP chairman would be visiting various sites of the Thar Coal project’s block-II after the ceremony along with the mining field and model village.

GSMA Launches Global Mobile Money Certification Scheme

At the Mobile 360 – West Africa event, the GSMA announced the launch of the GSMA Mobile Money Certification, a global scheme for mobile money providers to offer safer, more transparent and more resilient financial services to millions of mobile money users around the world.

The certification relies on an independent assessment of a mobile money provider’s ability to deliver secure and reliable services, to protect the rights of consumers and to combat money laundering and terrorism financing.

The certification is designed to enhance consumer trust and accelerate commercial partnerships by setting a high bar to which all providers can aspire.

“The GSMA Mobile Money Certification is a consumer-focused initiative, aimed at giving customers confidence that a provider has taken steps to ensure their funds are in safe hands, their rights are protected and they can expect a high level of customer service,” said John Giusti, Chief Regulatory Officer, GSMA.

“With over 690 million accounts globally, the mobile money industry is having a clear impact on the global effort to expand financial inclusion, providing access to life-enhancing financial services and serving as a gateway to the digital economy. Mobile money is directly advancing 13 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by facilitating access to essential services such as health and education, providing employment opportunities and reducing poverty.”

The certification scheme follows a three-year consultative process led by the GSMA, which worked together with providers in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to understand the challenges of their business and assemble best practices from these markets.

Certification is open to all mobile money providers, whether they are a mobile operator, a bank or other type of payment service provider. Orange Côte d’Ivoire, Safaricom (Kenya), Telenor Microfinance Bank Ltd. (Easypaisa Pakistan), Tigo Tanzania and Vodacom Tanzania are the first to be certified, covering 98 million accounts in four markets.

The certification promotes the application of consistent risk mitigation and consumer protection practices across key areas of business. The requirements include a set of eight high-level principles and 300 detailed criteria covering issues such as security, consumer rights and the prevention of money laundering, financing of terrorism and fraud.

The Certification criteria complement providers’ compliance efforts, but goes beyond regulation in its detail and scope, defining and promoting industry best practices in detail. Responsible business practices are essential to help regulators achieve their goals around financial inclusion, stability, integrity and consumer protection.

The operational management of the certification is contracted to an independent scheme operator, Alliances Management, which has responsibility for training and overseeing independent assessors to ensure all assessments are consistent and objective. The benchmark for achieving certification has been set high to serve as an aspiration to all providers and a pass mark of 100 percent is required.
