Nutritional Value: Loose Milk & Packaged Milk

Did you know that in 2017 approximately 54.3% of individuals around the world consumed packaged as compared to loose milk? However, only 9% of people in Pakistan consume packaged milk!

Tetra Pak has always emphasized consuming safely packaged milk. The brand recently took the initiative to invite renowned social media personality Junaid Akram to their factory in order to demonstrate their packaging technology and to discuss the difference in nutritional value in both packaged and loose milk.

Though this informative process of learning, the renowned Brand aims to develop and implement awareness among individuals about the nutritional value of packaged milk.

All over the world, the number of Tetra Pak consumers have increased after adopting a healthier lifestyle and realizing how safely packaged milk can bring significant changes to livelihoods and one’s health.

Junaid Akram shows us how the procedure of how Tetra Pak packages are made, starting from basic design plates to how the packaging material goes through a 6-layers coating process to ensure the utmost safety of the product inside.

While having an interesting conversation with Sonya Kayani Communications Director Pakistan and Assad Abbas Marketing Director Tetra Pak the following topics were discussed.

When asked “Why is the consumption of packaged milk only 9% in Pakistan given that the technology is available since 1984”

Assad replied that there are 2 reasons, one, the population is still not aware of the benefits of packaged milk and of UHT technology. Secondly, the testing, processing, transportation, and packaging of packaging of packaged milk adds to its cost for the consumer and is therefore perceived as being more expensive as compared to loose milk However, this additional cost provides a great deal of value to the consumer; the fact that there is a surety with packaged milk that the milk inside is safe from bacteria which is not always the case with loose milk.

Junaid then asked, “we often see in soap ads that all germs are killed but there is always 1 bacteria cell left, so how can you claim that the UHT process eliminates all bacteria from milk?”

Sonya explained that most packaged milk producers have a comprehensive testing process which they apply on all the milk they collect. If the milk does not qualify as per the standards set during the milk collection phase, it is not accepted. Once the milk passes the testing criteria it goes through a process called UHT (Ultra High Treatment). Through this process, milk is boiled at a temperature between 137°C – 140°C for up to 4 seconds and then than cooled down completely to kill all harmful bacteria whilst retaining the milk’s natural nutrients. It is then packed in a sterile pack, which in the case of Tetra Pak’s 6-layer packaging, is impervious to light and oxygen which further ensures that no bacteria will exist in the package while it remains packed. The UHT process and Tetra Pak’s 6-layer packaging ensure that milk has a longer shelf life and can be transported easily without the need for refrigeration. Once the pack is opened however it will have a limited shelf life just like regular milk which demonstrates that it is completely natural and free from chemicals or preservatives.

Nutritional Differences in Packaged & Loose Milk

Milk is a natural source of 18 out of 22 necessary nutrients including Vitamin A, D, and B12, as well as potassium, calcium, zinc, protein, magnesium, and phosphorus.

This is the reason why doctors and experts always encourage a good intake of milk as lack of supplements lead to bone and health concerns like calcium deficiency, obesity, and even tooth decay!

On the other hand, loose milk is collected fresh from the animal (the health of these animals is not monitored or standardized) and does not go through any testing to ensure that it is free from adulterants or fulfills the basic nutritional criteria. It also does not go through a pasteurization or UHT process to kill bacteria. Not just that, it is usually stored in a plastic bag or container, which is not hygienic and can cause multiplication of bacteria.

Loose milk sellers generally resort to practices such as mixing water in milk to increase the quantity or adding ice to the milk to keep it cool during transportation. The water used during these practices is unfiltered/untreated and contains many germs, effluents and pathogens which get added to the milk by default and can lead to serious illness and diseases.

As 91% of the Pakistani population consumes loose milk, they are not only vulnerable to these illnesses but are also not getting the nutrition they need which is why as per a recent health ministry report malnutrition has increased from 12-13% in the last year. With a population of 206 Million people, this implies that over 26 Million people are suffering from malnourishment and associated issues such as stunted growth.

In comparison when we look at countries such as France, Spain, Sweden, Norway and Germany where UHT milk is the primary form of milk consumption and where major health issues in general and malnutrition, in particular, are virtually nonexistent and life expectancy rates are much higher than Pakistan, we have to question whether loose milk really is the safest and natural source of nutrition for our nation?

iPhone Passcode Hack Stirs Trouble!

According to security researcher Matthew Hickey, any iPhone can be hacked using a lightning cable and giving it a lot of time.

However, Apple has refuted his claims without any explanations.

iPhone Passcode Hack

Hickey claims that he can hack an iPhone by simply connecting to a computer and then sending it keyboard inputs in one long stream. The brute-force attack forces the handset to process all the different passcodes at once, bypassing iOS’ erase data tool. The feature wipes all data after 10 failed password attempts.

Later on, Hickey replied to his original tweet with a correction as researcher Stefan Esser pointed out that not all the passcodes he’s sending to the iPhone’s secure enclave are getting processed.

This was possible in a few cases because of the fast inputs, meaning that the iPhone is registering fewer counts as to visibility.

Afterward, Apple stated that it was an error and the result of incorrect testing, though the company still did not reveal what exactly was wrong, given that the new iOS 12 update is on its way, the company will be ‘taking care of the problem’.

Most lightly, the new feature will then cuts off access to the Lightning port after it has been connected while unlocked for a certain amount of time.

What do you think of this trick, does it work in your opinion?

Meesha Shafi’s Lawyer Taunts Ali Zafar Over Harassment Case!

meesha shafi ali zafar

Ali Zafar and Meesha Shafi’s sexual harassment controversy is making headlines yet again.

The first hearing was held yesterday and the court has issued a stay order in favor of Ali Zafar.

Meesha is to refrain from “making any derogatory remarks in any manner on print or electronic or social media” against Ali.

Although the court has directed Shafi to file her response by July 5th, the actress’s lawyer, Nighat Dad took to Twitter to clear a few things up.

Educating her followers (and indirectly bashing those speaking out against Meesha), the lawyer tweeted:

She clarified that the court proceedings are underway and that no verdict has been announced as of yet, slamming haters from making any assumptions.

She also replied to those who were accusing the singer of making such allegations against the ‘Teefa in Trouble’ star for the sake of “cheap publicity”.

For those unaware, the pair had worked together in the past and had enjoyed quite a friendship.

However, things took an ugly turn for the two when Meesha accused Ali of sexual harassment.

Of course, an accusation like that created a storm and pretty soon, other women from the entertainment industry stepped up to report similar incidents against Ali.

However, most of the industry folks and fans of Ali refused to believe such rumors and supported their favorite artist.

Meesha Shafi-Ali Zafar’s Controversy Takes an Ugly Turn With Legal Notice!

Despite the support, Ali denied any such accusation against him posted on social media that he would be filing a defamation case against Meesha for such slander.

Well, it looks like the Meesha and Ali storm has hit the Pakistani entertainment industry yet again and only time will tell the damage it will do!

‘Green Gold’: Pakistan Plants Hundreds of Millions of Trees!

The change is drastic: around the region of Heroshah, previously arid hills are now covered with a forest as far as the horizon. In northwestern Pakistan, hundreds of millions of trees have been planted to fight deforestation.

In 2015 and 2016 some 16,000 laborers planted more than 900,000 fast-growing eucalyptus trees at regular, geometric intervals in Heroshah — and the titanic task is just a fraction of the effort across the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“Before it was completely burnt land. Now they have green gold in their hands,” commented forest manager Pervaiz Manan as he displayed pictures of the site previously when only sparse blades of tall grass interrupted the monotonous landscape.

The new trees will reinvigorate the area’s scenic beauty, act as a control against erosion, help mitigate climate change, decrease the chances of floods and increase the chances of precipitation, says Manan, who oversaw the revegetation of Heroshah.

Residents also see them as an economic boost — which, officials hope, will deter them from cutting the new growth down to use as firewood in a region where electricity can be sparse.

“Now our hills are useful, our fields became useful,” says driver Ajbir Shah. “It is a huge benefit for us.”

Further north, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Swat, many of the high valleys were denuded by the Pakistani Taliban during their reign from 2006 to 2009.

Now they are covered in pine saplings. “You can’t walk without stepping on a seedling,” smiles Yusufa Khan, another forest department worker.

The Heroshah and Swat plantations are part of the “Billion Tree Tsunami”, a provincial government programme that has seen a total of 300 million trees of 42 different species planted across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

A further 150 million plants were given to landowners, while strict forest regeneration measures have allowed the regrowth of 730 million trees — roughly 1.2 billion new trees in total, the programme’s management says.

– ‘Transparency’ –

Kamran Hussain, a manager of the Pakistani branch of the World Wildlife Fund, who conducted an independent audit of the project, says their figures showed slightly less — but still above target at 1.06 billion trees.

“We are 100 percent confident that the figure about the billion trees is correct,” he told AFP, highlighting the transparency of the process. “Everything is online. Everyone has access to this information.”

The programme has been praised by the head of the Swiss-based International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a green NGO, which called it a “true conservation success story”.

Initially mocked for what critics said were unrealistic objectives, it is a welcome change to the situation elsewhere in the country.

Pakistani authorities say just 5.2 percent of the country is covered by forest, against the 12 percent recommended by the United Nations.

Just one big tree remains in the poverty-stricken village of Garhi Bit in the southern province of Sindh, shading its small mosque.

It has stood there for a century, locals say.

“Before, there were big trees, many kinds of them,” says Dad Mohammad, a 43-year-old farmer.

“But they started to dry because of the lack of water, so we cut them,” he says, pointing to hundreds of meters of cultivated land where previously there stood a forest.

Disaster

More than 60 percent of the forests lining Sindh’s riverbanks have disappeared in the last 60 years, mainly due to river depletion and massive logging during the 1980s, says Riaz Ahmed Wagan, of the provincial forest department.

“It is a disaster,” he says, adding that forestry remains the lowest priority on the agenda of the provincial governments.

The Billion Tree Tsunami, which cost the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government $169 million, started in November 2014. Officials say they are still implementing maintenance safeguards such as fire protection, with the project due to be completed in June 2020.

In early 2017, the federal government announced its own Green Pakistan Project, which aims to plant 100 million trees in five years across the country.

It ranges from “legislative reforms” to “wildlife protection”, according to its leader Ibrahim Khan, who works under the authority of the ministry for climate change. More than a quarter of the work was done by the end of April this year, he says.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is ruled by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, the political party headed by former cricketer Imran Khan, which is the main challenger to the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as the country heads into a general election next month.

Khan has vowed to make the environment an election issue, and to plant a total of 10 billion trees across the country. “Every child in Pakistan should be aware of the environmental issue which, until now, has been a non-issue,” he told AFP.

But it is yet to be seen whether his ambitions will translate into votes.

Pakistani environmental lawyer and activist Ahmad Rafay Allam says that in a country where the electorate is often swayed by infrastructure projects rather than the environment, he has doubts.

“It would be a first,” he told AFP.

Maternal Diabetes to an Increased Risk of Autism in Children: Study

New US research has found a link between three types of diabetes in pregnancy and an increased risk of autism in children.

Carried out by researchers at Kaiser Permanente Southern California, the study looked at 419,425 children born at 28 to 44 weeks between 1995 and 2012.

Of the children included in the study 621 were exposed to maternal type 1 diabetes, 9,453 to maternal type 2 diabetes, 11, 922 to gestational diabetes diagnosed by 26 weeks’ gestation, and 24,505 to gestational diabetes diagnosed after 26 weeks.

Although type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes diagnosed by 26 weeks have previously been linked with an increased risk of autism, less is known about the association between type 1 diabetes and autism.

The researchers followed the children using their electronic health records from age 1 year for a median of 6.9 years, during which time 5,827 children were diagnosed with autism.

The researchers found that the risk of autism was higher in children born to mothers with one of the three main types of diabetes that complicate pregnancy — type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes diagnosed by 26 weeks — compared to those with no exposure to maternal diabetes exposure.

In addition, the findings still held true after the researchers had taken into account maternal smoking during pregnancy and mothers’ prepregnancy BMI, with the results changed only slightly.

However, gestational diabetes diagnosed after 26 weeks was not associated with excess risk compared with no diabetes.

As an observational study the findings do not show cause and effect, and the team also pointed out that they cannot control for all of the natural factors that could explain the study findings. Autism risk factors related to the father were also not assessed in the study.

However, they added that the findings now provide new information on the associations between type 1 diabetes and the timing of diabetes (early vs late in pregnancy) and add to the existing research on type 2 and gestational diabetes.

The results can be found published online in the journal JAMA.
