FIFA World Cup 2018: Germany Crash Out of World Cup at Group Stage!

Holders Germany sensationally crashed out of the World Cup on Wednesday in one of the biggest shocks in the tournament’s history — failing to make it past the opening round for the first time since 1938.

In a stunning reverse by the footballing superpower who have reached either the final or semi-finals of every World Cup since 2002, the Germans stumbled to a 2-0 loss to South Korea that left them rooted to the bottom of Group F.

Germany went into the game knowing that a win by two clear goals would have seen them into the last 16. But instead it was Sweden and Mexico who advanced after the Swedes romped to a 3-0 win over the Mexicans in Yekaterinburg.

“The disappointment of us being eliminated is just huge,” said Germany coach Joachim Loew, who is now under pressure to quit despite signing a contract extension until 2022 last month.

“It’s too soon for me to answer, it will take a few hours to see things clearly, the disappointment is very deep in me,” the 58-year said when asked if he would resign.

“It is a really, really bitter evening for us,” defender Mats Hummels added. “The situation is very difficult to put into words.”

“We had plenty of opportunities, we broke our necks trying out there today,” he added.

Germany qualified for Russia with a perfect record of 10 wins, but Hummels said the team had not played well since they wrapped up qualification late last year.

Hummels said the warning signs had been there after Germany lost their opening game 1-0 to Mexico.

“We put ourselves in this situation after the Mexican game,” he admitted. “The last game we delivered a good performance was in the autumn of 2017.”

Sweden coach Janne Andersson spoke of his immense pride after his side topped the group with second-half goals against Mexico from Ludwig Augustinsson, Andreas Granqvist and an own goal from Edson Alvarez to move into a last-16 meeting with Switzerland.

“We’ve done a fantastic job today with this match,” Andersson said.

“I’m so incredibly proud, almost moved as the thought of how we performed on the pitch, so disciplined. I think we’ve grown since our last match.”

Andersson said he refused to take any pleasure in the demise of the Germans whom he had accused of distasteful celebrations when they beat Sweden.

“I am not like that, it is not like that sport. I was very angry, but that was then and this is now.”

– Brazil ease through –

Brazil beat Serbia 2-0 to top Group E and cruise through to a last-16 meeting with Mexico.

Philippe Coutinho’s sublime pass was converted by Paulinho in the 35th minute and Thiago Silva powered in a second-half header at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow.

The Brazilians had to soak up spells of intense pressure from Serbia but finish unbeaten in the group stage.

After failing to fire in their opening match in Russia, a 1-1 draw against Switzerland, Brazil appears to be finding their normal fluency with each match as they go in search of a sixth World Cup. The Mexicans will need to regroup fast before facing them in Samara on Monday.

Mladen Krstajic’s talented Serbia team will always wonder what might have been. They will inevitably point to the disallowed penalty in the highly-charged 2-1 defeat to Switzerland when Aleksandar Mitrovic was wrestled to the ground as the point when their World Cup went awry.

Switzerland joined Brazil in the second round as runners-up after they drew 2-2 with Costa Rica in Nizhny Novgorod.

The Swiss will face the Swedes in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday but must do so without captain Stephan Lichtsteiner who will be suspended after picking up a yellow card.

A 93rd-minute own goal by the unfortunate Yann Somer from a Bryan Ruiz penalty gave the central American side a deserved 2-2 draw on a night of late drama.

Switzerland’s earlier lead lasted just two minutes after substitute Josep Drmic slotted home to seemingly give them three points.

Earlier Blerim Dzemaili had thumped home to give Switzerland the lead against the run of play against the team which finished bottom of Group E.

That goal was canceled out by Kendall Waston’s header in the 56th minute, the central Americans’ first goal of the tournament.

HUAWEI Y7 Prime 2018 is Pakistan’s Bestselling Smartphone Ever

The GfK report for May 2018 places Huawei less than 1% shy of clinching the No. 1 spot in Pakistan.

One in four consumers all over Pakistan chose HUAWEI Y7 Prime 2018 in the USD 100/- to USD 200/- segment. This was claimed by the GfK report for May 2018, making it Pakistan’s most loved smartphone. The device was launched in April as a perfect choice for youngsters looking to experience flagship Huawei features for an amazing price.

Featuring a 5.99” HUAWEI FullView Display with a stylish feel, the device is built for young photography enthusiasts with a 13MP+2MP dual rear camera powered by a superfast Octa-core chipset, 3GB RAM and 32GB ROM. With hardware and in-built features that most high-end smartphones have, the HUAWEI Y7 Prime 2018 became the device of choice for many not looking to spend big.

The GfK report also highlights how HUAWEI Mate 10 lite is the most preferred mid-range device in Pakistan. Having been launched in November 2017, it has stayed on the top spot for the last six months.

“This is an exciting time for us in the local market, because we can feel Pakistan’s love towards our innovative device offerings,” said Blueking Wang, Manager, Huawei Consumer Business Group. “This love and fan-following motivates us to introduce even better, more competitively-priced devices during the second half of 2018. Dove Unveils Beauty Mark For Un-Retouched Images

The skincare giant is launching a ‘No Digital Distortion Mark’ that will signal the absence of any alterations to its images from this July.

The aim of the mark, according to the brand, is “to help women and girls navigate the media landscape letting them know that the image they see has not been digitally distorted to fit the ideals of what beauty is and isn’t.”

“Last year, we pledged to use images with zero digital distortion,” said Dove Global Vice President, Sophie Galvani, in a statement. “This year, we want to go one step further and give women a tool to help them understand what is real and what isn’t.”

The new symbol will appear on all of Dove’s branded content globally, starting with its deodorant campaigns from next month. By January next year, it will also be rolled out across the company’s static imagery across print, digital and social media.

Dove, which is known for its down-to-earth approach to beauty standards, first unveiled a ‘Real Beauty Pledge’ that vowed to always feature ‘real women’ of all ages, ethnicities, and sizes in its campaigns, last year.

It is not the only major brand communicating its no-photoshop stance to shoppers; earlier this year, US drugstore giant CVS announced the introduction of a ‘CVS Beauty Mark’, a watermark symbol that appears on unaltered images to signify its authenticity to customers. The mark made its debut in April, as part of the retailer’s first photoshop-free campaign, dubbed “Beauty in Real Life.”

Volkswagen to Stash Cars at Berlin’s Problem Airport

Car giant Volkswagen will stock cars awaiting strict new emissions tests at Berlin’s under-construction airport, combining the German national embarrassments of the carmaker’s “dieselgate” scandal and the much-delayed travel hub.

“In this case, our normal logistics spaces aren’t enough,” a Volkswagen spokesman told AFP on Wednesday, saying the firm faces delays to emissions tests on between 200,000 and 250,000 cars.

The firm will store vehicles at VW’s testing grounds near its Wolfsburg HQ as well as the Berlin airport and “is looking into other spaces,” he added.

Like other carmakers, VW is scrambling to adapt to a new emissions testing regime known as the Worldwide harmonised Light vehicles Test Procedure or WLTP, forcing it to slow production in Wolfsburg as well as storing untested cars.

WLTP is designed to more accurately reflect vehicles’ emissions performance under real driving conditions, making it longer and more complex than previous procedures.

Volkswagen for years fooled regulators under previous testing regimes.

It admitted in 2015 to building software known as a “defeat device” into 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide, reducing harmful emissions in the lab but allowing them to shoot up in on-road driving.

Other carmakers like Daimler and BMW have since fallen under suspicion and this year were forced to recall thousands of vehicles for software updates.

As a blow to Germany’s pride in its engineering prowess and reputation for honesty in business, the endless, convoluted “dieselgate” scandal has been matched in recent years only by the succession of disasters at Berlin’s new international airport.

First slated to open in 2011, the opening of the hub named for former Chancellor Willy Brandt has been repeatedly pushed back over issues ranging from fire safety to structural integrity.

Meanwhile, one former manager at the project was jailed in 2016 for accepting a bribe and prosecutors said last year they were probing another.

Authorities now hope to open the doors — another of the many technical problems at the troubled airport — by October 2020.

PCB & UAE Cricket Board Lock Mutual Agreement

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) have been in talks for some time now. The discussion, or debate, was over the UAE acting as home ground to other tournaments and teams.

However, Pakistan and its home league, PSL, would suffer if the grounds cater to other leagues and tournaments around the same season. Thus, PCB Chairman Najam Sethi met with the ECB members to allow the nation’s matches to be played in the UAE.

Roger Federer Eyes Ninth Wimbledon title but wary of Nadal threat

On the other hand, around half of the fixtures are being expected to be hosted by Lahore and Karachi for PSL 4. Unfortunately, there remains a security threat that prevents several internationally acclaimed cricketers from playing in the country.

According to Crictracker, reports claim Najam Sethi is currently in talks with the ECB to allow a small time-period between the leagues for logistical and marketing efforts for PSL. The timeframe has been allocated as 35 days.

Though all PSL seasons have been successful up till now, the fact that many international players have security concerns for playing in Pakistan has still caused disheartenment amongst cricket enthusiasts.

We hope to see more players flying in soon! Who do you want to see on the ground in Pakistan?

Messi’s Argentina Save World Cup Hopes with Last-Gasp Goal

Facebook Eases Ban on Cryptocurrency Ads

Facebook said Tuesday it was easing a ban on ads for cryptocurrencies while keeping a prohibition on initial coin offerings to raise assets.

The move comes five months after the leading social network said it was banning all ads related to cryptocurrencies like bitcoin as a way to curb scams.

To place ads on Facebook for cryptocurrencies, companies will need to be pre-approved and offer proof they have licenses or are traded on a public exchange, the company said.

“Given these restrictions, not everyone who wants to advertise will be able to do so,” Facebook product management director Rob Leathern said in a statement.

“But we’ll listen to feedback, look at how well this policy works and continue to study this technology so that, if necessary, we can revise it over time.

Facebook and other online platforms began cracking down on ads for crypto-related businesses amid concerns over fraud in the burgeoning and largely unregulated sector where currencies can see huge swings.

Fraud is common in the world of red-hot digital currencies such as bitcoin.

Earlier this year, the US Securities and Exchange Commission shut down an initial coin offering by a Texas company called AriseBank.

AriseBank was accused of relying on celebrity endorsers such as boxer Evander Holyfield and social media to cheat investors out of $600 million of its goal of $1 billion for a currency it called “AriseCoin.”

Initial coin offerings — used by some startups to raise billions of dollars — still won’t be able to advertise on Facebook.

Twitter, Google and Snapchat have announced similar bans.

The British government early this year called for global regulation of controversial virtual currencies like bitcoin.

Bitcoin and similar forms of virtual cash are independent of governments and banks and use blockchain technology, where encrypted digital coins are created by supercomputers.

The virtual currency is not regulated by any central bank but is instead overseen by a community of users who try to guard against counterfeiting.

Messi’s Argentina Save World Cup Hopes with Last-Gasp Goal

Argentina rescued their World Cup hopes in dramatic fashion on Tuesday as defender Marcos Rojo scored a stunning volley to snatch a late 2-1 win over Nigeria and set up a last-16 match against France.

Lionel Messi set the two-time winners on their way with his first goal in Russia but Victor Moses equalised from the penalty spot and as time ticked away the increasingly ragged South Americans appeared to be heading home.

But Rojo made a surprise appearance in the box to turn home a cross from Gabriel Mercado with a crisp side-footed volley in the 86th minute to send the Argentine fans in Saint Petersburg, including legendary 1986 World Cup winner Diego Maradona, into raptures.

A highly emotional Maradona rushed to the front of the VIP box where he was watching and gave a one-fingered salute with both hands and shouted an obscene insult.

Maradona later fell unwell and a video emerged of him being helped by two people in his entourage into a chair. Photographs showed the 57-year-old being tended to by parademics, although Argentinian daily Ola reported he later went to his hotel.

– Rojo’s VAR escape –

Argentina’s escape came after Rojo came close to having a penalty awarded against for handball minutes earlier until he was saved by a controversial VAR review.

“It is marvellous to have won it in this manner. It is a deserved joy,” Messi said in quotes on Argentina’s official Twitter account.

“We knew God was with us and wasn’t going to let us go out.

“I thank all the fans that are here, for all their sacrifice and to all those in Argentina that were always with us.”

Argentina were held by Iceland in their tournament opener and then humiliated 3-0 by Croatia, putting the 2014 finalists on the brink of a first-round exit.

Their struggles came after their pre-tournament preparations were wracked by controversy and poor form, coupled with a reliance on an ageing, unbalanced squad.

The Argentine federation was even forced to confirm that Jorge Sampaoli would continue for the final group game amid rumours of a rift between players and coach.

At the drama played out, 1,500 kilometres (950 miles) away in Rostov-on-Don Croatia snuffed out the challenge of Iceland, scoring late through Ivan Perisic to seal a 2-1 win and complete a perfect group stage.

Croatia will face Denmark in the first knockout round in Nizhny Novgorod on Sunday but Nigeria and Euro 2016 surprise package Iceland will head home.

Croatia took the lead thanks to a slick second-half volley by Milan Badelj. Gylfi Sigurdsson equalised from the penalty spot before Perisic struck late.

Croatia were already through to the last 16 and coach Zlatko Dalic rested most of the side that thumped Argentina 3-0, with only captain Luka Modric and the winger Perisic keeping their places.

“Our goal is achieved,” said man-of-the-match Badelj. “We are top of the group and we are ready to compete in the second round of the World Cup.

“Now we can concentrate on preparations for the knockout stage. This is a big new win for Croatia. There is no special celebration, let’s go further, step by step through the tournament.”

– France top group –

Earlier, France and Denmark produced the first goalless match of the tournament in front of 78,000 spectators at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

Didier Deschamps rested goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and midfielder Paul Pogba among six changes and his side struggled to create any clear-cut chances against a determined Denmark.

Deschamps immediately switched his focus towards what he called the “second competition” after the uninspiring contest.

“There’s a second competition that’s going to start, the last 16 is straight elimination,” said the coach, who must now prepare his players to face Messi and Argentina.

“There’s a mountain in front of us now. But we’re there and we’re full of ambition to get to the next stage.”

Australia will go back to the drawing board after they ended bottom of Group C with a solitary point following a 2-0 defeat to Peru, who are also heading home.

Andre Carrillo and Paolo Guerrero, the veteran who was only cleared to play days before the tournament after having a ban for taking cocaine lifted, scored in Sochi.

Tim Cahill, the 38-year-old Australian midfielder, came on as a substitute for his first appearance in his fourth World Cup but was unable to influence the outcome and the Socceroos will have to look to the future with talents such as 19-year-old Iranian-born Daniel Arzani.
