Pakistan 11th Largest Arms Importer in the World

Arms
Source: Al Jazeera

On Monday, a report published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) stated that Pakistan is the eleventh largest arms importer in the world.

Russia, Italy, and China are the key suppliers to Pakistan which make up to 2.6% of global arms imports during the years 2015-2019, says the report.

The research is based on armaments, arms control, conflict, and disarmament. Over the past five years, the report indicates India which is Pakistan’s neighboring country to be the second-largest arms importer in the world.

A senior researcher at Sipri said, “As in previous years, in 2019 India and Pakistan — which are nuclear-armed states — attacked each other using an array of imported major arms.”

He added, “Many of the world’s largest arms exporters have supplied these two states for decades, often exporting arms to both sides.”

“Between 2010–14 and 2015–19, arms imports by India and Pakistan decreased by 32 and 39 percent, respectively. While both countries have long-standing aims to produce their own major arms, they remain largely dependent on imports and have substantial outstanding orders and plans for imports of all types of major arms,” said the report.

AnTuTu Benchmark Apps Removed By Google From Play Store

Source: Android Police

AnTuTu is a renowned benchmarking tool for mobile devices that have recently been removed by Google from the Play Store. Furthermore, the three benchmarking applications with AnTuTu branding have also been removed from the play store.

Source: Giz China

It has been speculated that the removal could be a part of a crackdown on Cheetah Mobile after its repeated policy violations as it appears AnTuTu is owned by Cheetah Mobile.

The three applications are; AnTuTu 3DBench, AnTuTu Benchmark and AItutu Benchmark. AppBrain, an analytics service states the latest update for the AI Benchmark app to be on February 13th while the regular app was updated on February 7th. The exact date of removal for all the apps is not confirmed, however, the main AnTuTu App was available until 22nd February.

Looking into AnTuTu’s website, there seems to be no reference to Cheetah Mobile and it even has a separate privacy policy. However, the Tianyancha business database lists Fu Sheng as the chairman and manager of Beijing AnTuTu Technology Co. Sheng also serves as the CEO of Cheetah Mobile.

After tech-website, Giz China reached out to Antutu, the company has now responded in order to shed light on the ongoing situation.

Here’s what AnTuTu has clarified about the issue at hand:

“The team had received a notification email from Google on March 7th informing us that Antutu was one of the related publisher accounts of Cheetah Mobile, all Antutu apps were removed from the Play Store. But infact, we think there is some misunderstanding about it. Antutu is NOT the related account of Cheetah Mobile.”

AnTuTu further explains its business relationship with Cheetah Mobile,

“Antutu was founded in 2011, even before Cheetah Mobile, and is one of the earliest Google Play developers. Cheetah Mobile invested in us in around 2014 and became one of our shareholders since then. However, we still retain a considerable account of shares and Independent operation of the company as well as our own independent Google Play account. Cheetah Mobile has never touched our Google Play account, and AnTuTu has not done any promotion of Cheetah Mobile’s software.”

AnTuTu believes that this is simply a misunderstanding with Google and the issue will be resolved soon. They are also working on changing their legal supplier.

In the meantime, the company has replaced the links to download the apps on its website with APK links. The question now remains whether AnTuTu will return to Play Store and how would Google be explaining it all?

Renowned Pakistani Personalities Are Speaking Against The Aurat March Attack In Islamabad!

Source/ Dawn

Numerous people were wounded after the Aurat March in Islamabad came under attack by religious men – one of whom was masked as a woman in a burqa – on Sunday as the march was drawing to a close in front of Islamabad Press Club.

The occurrence took place when the march was about to come to an end. Some people removed a cloth partition installed for the safety of the participants and entered the demonstration.

On the other side of the partition, a counter-protest had been underway. However, the situation was soon brought under control by the cops.

There were people who gave their two cents on the entire chaos at the march on Sunday.

Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari also issued a condemnation, saying that while people have the right to disagree, “violence is unacceptable”.

It’s sad to see how women are not appreciated enough in our society and the reason to they were stoned was because they demanded equality.

Furthermore, the men, who reportedly belonged to the Jamiat Ulema-e Islam – Fazl (JUI-F) and Lal Masjid, were hurling abuses at women, telling them to stop chanting the slogan ‘Mera Jism, Meri Marzi’.

Women’s safety is actually something to think about in Pakistan

Questions are being raised regarding the negligence of Islamabad police at the Aurat March

It’s no surprise that the entire facade was to try and put women down. Irfana Yasser was returning to her car with her children when a man threw chilli powder at her face while many others reported that the religious men showed them their private parts.

Osman Khalid Butt also added his opinions on the matter

Actress Mansha Pasha stated that the alleged defenders if Islam needs a correct definition of women rights.

Is this really the Naya Pakistan?

The burqa clad when above and beyond to prove their point

What are your thoughts about the incident that occurred at Aurat March?

Pakistan had an exciting weekend this time around as social media rejoiced the launch of the much-awaited Audi E-Tron Quattro SUV!

Audi has taken up the motto ‘Electric has gone Audi’ as it has now joined the electric vehicle game.

The automotive giant launched the E-Tron yesterday, 8th March at its Karachi showroom.

The E-Tron is a luxury SUV that will remind you of likes like the Jaguar I-Pace and Tesla Model X.

Car of the Future: Electric Hyundai Prophecy [Watch Video]

Under the Hood

Audi’s first all-electric production SUV is battery powered with a 95.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It is powered with two electric motors (one at each axle) which gives a combined result of a maximum of 402HP and 561Nm of torque.

Because of its super-powered batteries, the E-Tron can go from 0 to 100km/h in 6.6 seconds!

According to PakWheels, the five-seat crossover can make use of 150.0-kW DC fast-chargers that allow it to regain roughly 80km in 10 minutes and about 260km in 30 minutes. Those using a more conventional 240-volt outlet will be able to fully charge the e-Tron in about nine hours.

Inside the Cabin

Here are the following features in the cabin:

  • Digital gauge cluster—called Virtual Cockpit
  • Two flush-mounted touchscreens in the center
  • A head-up display
  • Massaging front seats

  • Apple Carplay
  • Android Auto

Furthermore, because of no traditional driveshaft or transmission, the cabin and cargo area gets even more spacious, measuring 29 cubic feet behind the back row and 57 with the seatbacks folded flat.

Safety

For any automotive manufacturer, the safety of its customers is a priority. The E-Tron was awarded 5-stars for the crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Moreover, it was named Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IHSA).

Dua-e-Reem: Mahira Khan’s Latest Song About Equality In Marriage Is Winning Hearts!

Marriage is a commitment and a contract between two people that is intended to last their lifetime. It is a bond unlike others that unites two people and grows as their relationship evolves. Nowadays, we see this bond being broken easily and the social repercussions are manifold. This is not to say that one needs to stay in a bad marriage but sometimes a little compromise from both sides can go a long way.

‘Dua-e-Reem’ featuring the queen of hearts Mahira Khan is a beautiful and witty song that highlights the journey of empowering women in marriage through a simple prayer. This work of art has been directed by the legendary Shoaib Mansoor and portrays the importance of both the genders in a thought-provoking manner.

We love the humorous exchange of words in the song between the singers and the highlight is the leading lady Mahira Khan’s equally witty comeback to the age-old unnecessary traditional barriers women face during marriage.

Ready to be blown away? Check out this Dua-E-Reem!

Changing the perspective!

In the past, we’ve all seen the cliched wedding TVCs where the storyline is usually exactly the same. The typically depicted “Rishta ” process, portrays everything to be just perfect prior to a marriage but no one talks about what happens after.

However, this song is anything but typical. It is most likely going to change the mindset of many. Nowadays, failed marriages have become common. Ever thought about the factors that lead to a failed marriage? Expecting too much from each other? Not willing to compromise? Not working towards making things right?

We’re sure everyone watching the song will definitely understand how annoyed Mahira and every other woman feels when we hear such age-old desi beliefs. Many a time women end up compromising even in the most absurd of circumstances – Yes, that’s the face we all make!

The video emphasizes on how both genders are equally important in a relationship. They complement each other and both need to compromise to keep their relationship going and to strengthen the bond.

The video beautifully portrays how a woman holds the key and power to the happiness of her household. The relationship in a marriage is based on understanding, companionship and compromise. The theory that opposites attract is true. Even if you have different backgrounds, likes and interests you can always find a way to create a bond is that is strong if it’s based on mutual respect, love and understanding. The song communicates an important important message through #RotiSayKhayenChawal as it symbolically depicts that even Roti can be eaten with rice – this shows the essence of compromise.

The beginning of any marriage is like an empty box that needs to be filled up. Both the husband and wife need to equally participate in it to live a happily married life and to create a perfect example for future generations.

She steals the show with this hilarious line – Well isn’t this what a marriage truly means? Equality for both partners, be it the good or the bad.

Although the message may sound pretty odd, the concept is pretty clear. Both the genders should accept the other despite their differences with utmost trust, love, care, respect and more. So, if one likes Roti and the other likes rice, who knows they might end up eating roti with chawal?

Oh! What a dream marriage this would be!

Summing it all up, marriage, no doubt is a beautiful relationship that asks for effort from both sides only if they are willing to make things work and maintain that perfect balance of love, trust, companionship and respect. To convey this very message to the masses, this campaign has done so exceptionally!

So, by now, we should all know that it takes two to make a marriage work

Let us know what you think about Dua-e-Reem in the comments below!

Engro Vopak: Empowering Young Women to Bridge the Gender Digital Gap in Pakistan

Over the last few decades, technology has drastically shaped the world around us. Yet, the tech industry is largely seen as a “male industry” across the world.

Pakistan is no different and, according to P@SHA, women represent only 14% of the IT workforce and 13% of IT managers in the industry.

As the issues of women’s rights and gender equality take center stage, socially responsible businesses are now driving actions to create the gender-equal world we all deserve.

To tackle the gender parity issue in the tech industry and create a pipeline of women in tech, Engro Vopak, and Engro Foundation partnered with CIRCLE in 2018.

Under the Tech Karo initiative, Engro has supported the training in tech and life skills, and provided mentoring opportunities, for young girls from the underserved community of Lyari and other parts of the city.

#TECHKARO at a Glance 2018-19

  • In 2019, two training programs were conducted in Web Development and Coding at Usman Institute of Technology and Digital Marketing and Graphic Design at the Lyari Girls Cafe.
  • The program has benefited more than 170 young girls and boys (65% female)
  • Over 50% of the graduates were offered internship and job opportunities
  • 98% of the students said they will contribute towards their household income

Marvi Sirmed Claims Receiving Death Threats & Things Are Getting Out Hands

Source: Facebook/Marvi

Mera Jism Meri Marzi‘ (My body, my choice) was already scrutinized when it first made a manifestation on a placard at Aurat March last year, but the motto was given a new life when writer Khalilur Rehman went on a spree and attacked Marvi Sirmed for saying it on national television this week.

Khalilur Rehman Qamar, cursed journalist and social activist Marvi Sirmed on live television with no remorse.

This certain issue has garnered a lot of attention amongst the masses. From celebrities to journalists to laymen – everyone has given their two cents on the matter.

While some believe that #MeraJismMeriMarzi is consent, forced childbirth and rape among other things, others say that it’s the legalization of prostitution’ and indecent.

Amidst all the discussions on Aurat March, Marvi Sermid shared on Twitter how she is being threatened.

Sirmed wrote,

Some low life leaked my cell no & email on social media platforms. Self proclaimed protectors of women & of Islamic culture are sending me messages and calls full of rape & murder threats, asking to sell sex, and hurling all kinds of filthy sexual inuendo. So much for Islam!”

To her tweet, there were some renowned people who responded.

Writer Khalil ur Rehman has now been banned from a few TV channels after he lost his patience on live TV. We’ll have to wait and see what more will come out of this ongoing debate of feminism/non-feminist.

U Microfinance Bank Wins Grant from Karandaaz for Financial Inclusion of Women

U Microfinance Bank Ltd. signed a grant agreement with Karandaaz Pakistan, with funding from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The grant will help U Bank further its mission of financially including more women. U Bank won the grant through a competitive application process via Karandaaz’s Digital Experiments program.

While uptake for digital financial services (DFS) remains low in Pakistan, the gap is especially wide when it comes to women. Only 7% of women in Pakistan are financially included, compared to 20% of men.

Research shows that women are engaged in financial activity informally, especially when it comes to saving. While mobile money is becoming an increasingly popular mode of money storage internationally, in Pakistan adoption of mobile accounts continues to lag behind.

Through this grant, U Bank seeks to test out interventions specially designed to encourage more women to become active users of digital accounts.

The lessons learned through the experiment will be widely disseminated for the diffusion and uptake of best practices to push the entire ecosystem forward.

“U Bank looks forward to working with Karandaaz Pakistan over the next few months to generate new insights on the interventions that accelerate women’s usage of mobile wallet accounts”, shared Kabeer Naqvi, U Bank’s President, and CEO.

“The digital future of the bank is already shaping up with the introduction of internet and mobile banking, deployment of ATMs and a fully digital loan application process. This research will help us further learn the most effective ways to extend our reach and reduce the gender gap within the digital financial services space”.

Ali Sarfraz, CEO Karandaaz Pakistan said, “Karandaaz is delighted to engage in this partnership with U Microfinance Bank Ltd. The focus of this support is to encourage digital financial service providers to use innovative approaches for promotion of inclusivity in general and women’s financial inclusion in particular using A/B testing.

We hope that these experiments will help in identifying the drivers that can promote mobile account usage by women who otherwise find it hard to access traditional banking avenues.

The expected outcome is the conversion of in-active users or non-users by trying variations in communication strategy, product features and digital transaction costs.

We are excited about our partnerships with different DFS providers for generating insights about digital account usage and look forward to deepen our engagement with them to support such initiatives.”

Karandaaz is onboarding partners on a rolling basis to conduct digital experiments in partnership with DFS providers to address the barriers related to uptake and active usage of digital accounts. Interested parties can apply to Karandaaz for support to conduct experiments for testing ideas, products, services, and incentive structures that can potentially accelerate the uptake of DFS by excluded and underserved segments, especially rural women.

AB testing will be conducted through these experiments to extract results. The lessons learned through these experiments will be widely disseminated for the diffusion and uptake of best practices by the DFS practitioners.
