Credits: thenews

A team of Pakistani scientists at Dow University has successfully managed to find a significant breakthrough in a hard and fast battle against the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Reportedly, the group was able to isolate antibodies chemically, purified it, and concentrated the antibodies using ultra-filtration to remove unwanted material from the final product.

The blood used for this experiment belong to coronavirus infected patients who have now successfully recovered.

Moreover, this method of treatment has been declared safe, comes with low risks and is highly effective against the virus. Whereas plasma therapy is only allowed in emergency situations because of its side-effects.

The lead researcher Dr. Shaukat Ali is the principal of Dow College of Biotechnology and other team members included Dr. Shobha Luxmi, Syed Muneebuddin, Mir Rashid Ali, Ayesha Ali, Mujtaba Khan, Fatima Anjum, Dr. Sohaib Tauheed.

The team developed the H-IVIG after days of hard work and dedication. The first blood sample was collected in March 2020.

Furthermore, this is the world’s first report of isolation, formulation and safety demonstration of immunoglobulin purified from recovered COVID-19 patients giving a ray of hope to Pakistanis and people worldwide.

As more and more COVID-19 cases come forward across the world, following many casualties everything seems to be at a halt, at the moment but the director Joseph Kosinski, of the film Top Gun 2, Maverick has still scheduled to complete the film in June.

After watching the video, it is safe to say that the top gun attire might as well be useful for grocery shopping these days considering the COVID-19 issue at hand.

The TikTok might as well be a promotional activity, a reminder to the world that the Top Gun 2 is still in the making. However, we are not sure when the film will be released as cinemas across the globe are shut down during the pandemic.

“We’re sticking to our schedule and finishing the movie just as if it were coming out on its original release date,” Kosinski told Comic Book.

There are many restrictions that need to be followed as it restricts the filmmakers but the real spirit is to make it work somehow and finish the film in time.

“We’re sticking to our schedule and finishing the movie and just holding it for six months, which is such an interesting thing to do but it’s the right decision because this is a movie that people need to see on the big screen and if there’s no big screen, then you don’t want to release this movie,” he added.

“We want this to be a shared experience on as big a screen as possible.” We hope so too!

Jazz To fund 1000 COVID-19 Tests At SKMCH&RC

Islamabad, April 13, 2020: As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) spreads across Pakistan, the health system is increasingly under pressure. One of the biggest issues being faced is the limited availability of free of cost testing for the destitute population. Realizing this as an urgent need, Jazz has donated PKR 8 million to Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC), which shall fund 1000 COVID-19 tests.  SKMCH&RC is a site designated for COVID-19 testing and has so far conducted over 500 free of cost tests on those who fulfilled the initial testing criteria.

This donation is a part of the PKR 1.2 billion COVID-19 relief support that Jazz recently announced. The support includes short to mid-term initiatives aimed to limit the negative impact of the pandemic, primarily for the most vulnerable communities.

“I understand that the policymakers are trying their best to ensure adequate supply of testing equipment nationwide, but we had to reach out to the private sector for urgent support. My greatest gratitude to Jazz for answering our call and supporting this humanitarian cause at a crucial stage. We will now revamp our testing efforts to clamp down on the virus spreading beyond control,” Dr. Faisal Sultan, CEO, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust.

SKMCH&RC has been at the forefront throughout the outbreak and is watching this developing situation very closely. Apart from being the designated testing site for the virus, the institution has also agreed to provide beds for the treatment of patients with coronavirus.

“Jazz has always been a strong supporter of SKMCH&RC and the ideology it stands for. The decision to support the institution during this critical time was unanimous as we believe they can create a positive impact in the fight against this pandemic,” said Jazz CEO Aamir Ibrahim. “As the leading mobile operator, we have a duty to support the health authorities and medical institutions during these critical times by leveraging our resources, digital expertise and nationwide footprint. To every one of the heroes on our front lines, we thank you.”

Jazz has always supported SKMCH&RC and has, in the past, been one of the leading philanthropists for the medical institution.  The mobile operator chose to answer the call for assistance during a time when every individual and corporate, alike, need to play their roles for the nation’s benefit.

The coronavirus pandemic has caused countries to take on strict lockdown measures and the majority of the world’s population right now is working from within their homes. People are not using their car unless they need to buy groceries and this has made it difficult for car manufacturers to market their products during this difficult time. However, Honda UAE’s latest campaign tackles this situation with great ease.

Honda UAE embraces the #StayHome initiative by releasing a new 35-second commercial that was filmed entirely from home with the help of an ad agency, Memac Ogilvy in Dubai.

Source: Memac Ogilvy

The advert starts like any other car campaign, with a zoomed in shot of the car that showcases its minute details. However, there is a twist for the viewers as the text flashes on screens saying, “This might be the first car commercial to be written, directed, edited and watched entirely from home.”

Playing against instrumental music, viewers can see the miniature Honda Civic 2020 car zooming across the carpets, passing through furniture legs and finally a person uses a finger to close the door of the mini Civic. The car manufacturer puts up a hopeful message at the end saying, “Until we drive again” with the hashtag #StayHome.

Well, who would’ve thought that an entire commercial could be produced within the confines of our homes? Watch Honda UAE’s latest campaign here:

SWVL Partners With Naya Jeevan To Provide Comprehensive Health Coverage For Captains & Their Families

Karachi: April 14, 2020: Naya Jeevan and SWVL announced a strategic alliance offering comprehensive health & life insurance coverage (including COVID-19 coverage) to SWVL’s 1000+ captains and their families for the first time. Naya Jeevan has been championing the right to health & life insurance coverage especially for the lower & middle segments of the Pakistani society over the past 8 years (more than 80% of Naya Jeevan’s portfolio of 50,000+ lives across Pakistan consists of people who have never had insurance before) and this commendable step by SWVL goes a long way in creating a social impact while protecting families linked to its supply chain, especially during these challenging times.

Together, Naya Jeevan and SWVL have co-developed a purpose-built insurance plan, including a technology-enabled, health & wellbeing intervention powered by doctHERs (a digital health venture affiliated with Naya Jeevan). This will give SWVL’s captains and their families (approximately 3,000 lives) access to comprehensive, nationwide, Health and Life insurance,  cashless OPD benefits and unrestricted access to primary care doctors via telemedicine.

For SWVL, this initiative is an integral part of a ‘think forward’ strategy that takes into account the global COVID-19 pandemic and empowers its captains to stay engaged, safe, and stress-free, both for themselves and their dependents. For Naya Jeevan, the strategic partnership is another major milestone in its long journey towards enabling all Pakistanis to be protected under health insurance & life insurance coverage.

Khaqan Sikander, CEO Naya Jeevan & doctHERs remarked, “Strong are those that stand by the weak. Naya Jeevan has always been an impact-first company. We are proud to welcome SWVL into our growing portfolio of socially progressive clients that include Unilever, RB, Shell and FrieslandCampina (Engro Foods) to name a prominent few. Our clients have always been among the first movers in their respective industries to champion the right to health and wellness, be it for workers inside their companies, their supply chains, their industrial sectors or the country at large.”

Mr. Shahzeb Memon, General Manager for Pakistan at SWVL added that “Captains are the backbone of SWVL and are placed at the center of our decision making. Due to the countrywide lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it became evident that our captains would be impacted by the worsened economic conditions. During these challenging times, we pledge to safeguard them and support them and their families as much as possible. As part of our broader captain protection plan, we are partnering with Naya Jeevan to provide comprehensive medical and life insurance to all our captains.”

You Don’t Need To Disinfect Your Grocery at Home

Groceries

According to NPR.ORG, you do not need to disinfect your groceries. The COVID-19 is likely to spread through person to person through droplets.

A Michigan based family doctor shared an elaborate routine How he disinfects his groceries online and since then many people have started following the routine. However, the experts suggest otherwise.

The Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration suggests that your grocery haul is not a likely vector for the novel coronavirus.

Per the FDA’s website, “The virus is thought to spread mainly from person to person. Foodborne exposure to this virus is not known to be a route of transmission.”

Educate Yourself About the Dangers

“While it is possible to contract the virus [from contaminated surfaces], the majority of transmission is probably going to be from respiratory droplets, which you’re exposed to when you’re around other people,” says Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.

So it is more likely that you can contract the virus from people inside the grocery store and not the food that you’re taking home with yourself.

Take Extra Precautions

Only visit stores when it is absolutely necessary. Plan your meals out, make enough space in the fridge for storage.

When you are ready to enter the store, make sure you sanitize your hands before going in. Wear a facemask and be conscious of not touching your face and maintain 6 feet distance.

Until and unless you’re done buying your groceries, try to not touch your face.

Do you need Gloves?

“Gloves are not magic,” Schaffner says. “Gloves don’t make you invulnerable. As soon as you touch something with your gloved hand, that contamination is on the gloves.”

A lot of researchers are not a fan of gloves reason being that anything you touch with the used gloves instantly contaminates.

Watch a nurse in Michigan demonstrate How Easy Coronavirus Cross-Contamination Can Be

DrFaisal Mahmood – Consultant and Section Head for Infectious Diseases from AKUH in an interview with Dawn recommended that washing your fresh produce with water is enough. You do not need to follow an elaborate routine. However, you must limit yourself from going to the grocery store.

Bottom line is, you must wash your hands all the time for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. Train your mind to not touch your face often.

Follow good hygiene practices and stay home!

Mahira Khan Pays A Heartwarming Tribute To Her Phuppos!

Source/ Mahira Khan's Instagram

In no world, phupphos (aunt) are considered the best or the ones who would understand their nieces or nephews and there are countless memes and tweets that prove that.

However, starlet Mahira Khan who has been in constant touch with her fans via social media accounts during the coronavirus lockdown, spoke her heart out about her dearest phuppo.

The Raees actor, took to Instagram to share a picture with her two phuppos and penned down an endearing note for them.

Paying tribute to her paternal aunts, the starlet mentioned that she’s never been able to relate to the desi tales about phuppos. Although we must add, we finally know where Khan inherited her beauty from.

Here is what the stunner had to say:

“I always grew up hearing how Phopos were not always the best, stories about kids not enjoying their father’s family as much as their mothers (Might be a desi thing?). I never really got that!

I grew up in a joint family, in my dada’s home. All of us together. Even those who didn’t live with us were always around. I have two Phopos and God you all can’t imagine what they are like. They are beautiful, funny, kind and strong women. My older Phopo (Surraiya), looked after her parents along with my father like they were her babies. The woman who works for her eats with her on their table… I have never seen that anywhere.

My younger Phupo (Seema), when she moved to America with her family, worked till the day she left literally. And while I was there, her home was my safe place, till she was there I knew I would be ok.

I feel like we are who we are because of all these relationships and people we have grown up with. There is so much of my Dadi Dada in them and there is so much of them in me. I thank God every day for them and my Chachas (I have 2, but that’s for another day).”

Legendary Memes On Taher Shah’s Latest Song Has Taken Over The Internet

Source/ The Current

Farishta, the latest track by Pakistani singer Taher Shah graced the social media late on Friday night amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Eye to Eye and Angel singer announced the release of his new song Farishta via Twitter.

Essentially, a translation of his cult hit Mankind’s Angel, the video of Farishta is entirely animated. The video has over 1,00,000 views on YouTube, with the ‘dislikes’ far exceeding the number of ‘likes.’

After watching the video a user commented “Coronavirus: Finally a worthy opponent! Our battles will be legendary!” So, you get the basic gist of how unamused the masses are.

Watch the video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=7&v=dSJ7fFAWvWY&feature=emb_logo

However, Tahira Shah’s music and memes go hand in hand which is precisely why Twitter was flooded with them.

Have a look:

Is COVID-19 equally terrifying as Farishta? You tell us.

Did anyone get those Son Pari vibes from the Farishta video?

Farishtay be like “Tahir what is this behavior?”

Where’s Voldemort to ‘Avada Kedavra’ him?

This ones takes the cake

The song is basically dedicated to children and the visuals are animated cartoons so kids can enjoy. People were expecting something more from Tahir Shah. However, Tahir Shah produced this number which is not very different from his previous song Angel so there’s nothing new to it. This time not only Tahir Shah is being trolled but the unknown person who created the animated video of his song is also questioned by the masses.

Consumers are met with a plethora of options when they visit the market – but let us bring our top picks of smartphones under PKR 30,000/-

HUAWEI Y7p (PKR 28,999/-)

Backed by the legacy of success achieved by Huawei’s Y series devices, the latest Y7p literally offers a flagship experience at an affordable price. The most remarkable features of this smartphone; make it the ideal choice for users with a limited budget.

Its large & crispy 6.39” display with FHD+ resolution of 1560 x 720, portrays great vibrancy and colors that are unmatched in this low-price category. The advanced Kirin 710F Octa-core processor is supported by 4GB RAM and 64GB of ROM delivers lightning-fast speed and security.

For photography purposes, it brings powerful cameras enriched with Artificial Intelligence. The triple AI camera at the back has 48MP (f/1.8 aperture) + 8 MP (Ultra Wide Angle Lens, f/2.4 aperture) + 2 MP (f2.4 aperture). On the front, it boasts an 8MP selfie camera.

With the new look and a long-lasting 4,000 mAH battery, the HUAWEI Y7p has given phenomenal performance to win the hearts and minds of mid-range smartphones.

OPPO A5 2020 – 64GB (PKR 27,999/-)

It is surely a good smartphone, but its base-variant, packed with 3GB of RAM and 64GB ROM, is priced higher at PKR 27,999/-. It does promise a lot with a 12 MP, AI-powered, Quad Camera setup & Ultra-Wide sensor at the back, while the front camera is an 8MP.

The 6.5 inch, HD screen promises superior imaging and creative expression, further enriched with a ColorOS 6, based on Android Pie. The device is powered by a Snapdragon 665+ processor. The 5,000 mAh battery ensures long-lasting performance.

VIVO Y15 (PKR 25,999/-)

VIVO Y15 is a well-equipped smartphone that is quite handy in day to day usage, according to its specs. VIVO Y15 comes in a sleek design, offering 4GB RAM and 64GB space.

VIVO Y15 is a mid-range phone but it does not justify its MediaTek Helio P22 processor as better options are available in the same price range as PKR 25,999/-. Y15 comes with a rear triple camera setup of 13+6+2 MP and 16 MP front camera.

The security system is an outstanding feature of the phone, fingerprint scanner and face detection works well if compared with its processor and RAM. 6.5-inch screen gives a charm to the phone.

Battery backup is a plus point of Y15 as it gives a backup of two days with a 5,000mAh battery. Its battery size justifies the screen size but just a big screen is not a dream variant for gamers.

Samsung A20s (PKR 28,999/-)

Samsung A20s comes with a spectacular 6.5 inches 720X1560 pixels resolution, a display feature like this enhances the display quality and colors seem more vibrant. Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset comes in two variants supported by 3GB RAM + 32GB and 4GB + 64 GB. Both variants deliver speed and data-security and smooth working experience. The main highlight of the phone is its fast charging and a battery of 4000mAh with a type C port.

Camera lovers and photographers will be satisfied with its triple rear camera setup of 13+8+5 MP while the front camera is 8MP. This is also a good choice in this price range.

Fashion Magazines Are Replacing Celebs With Doctors On Their Covers!

The coronavirus pandemic has caused chaos across the globe, with people quarantined inside their homes for three weeks and more it has given time to reflect on the essential things in life.

Celebrities and influencers seem to have lost the superior status they had in the general public’s eye. People are calling out in support for front liners to be recognised and celebrated at the next awards show and to be seen on red carpets across the globe once the pandemic is over.

This month, popular magazines worldwide have made last-minute changes to their cover photos for the upcoming months considering the ongoing COVID-19 situation. Instead of models and celebrity glamour, most covers feature frontline workers.

1. Italian Vogue

The Italian magazine said it started from scratch, shelving earlier cover plans in favour of a blank white cover, they mentioned, “It is a symbol of respect, rebirth, silence, purity, the color of lab coats and the title page of a new story that is about to begin.”

“To speak of anything else – while people are dying, doctors and nurses are risking their lives and the world is changing forever – is not the DNA of Vogue Italia,” the magazine said in the caption.

The Vogue Italia April Issue will be out next Friday 10th. 🤍🤍🤍 “In its long history stretching back over a hundred years, Vogue has come through wars, crises, acts of terrorism. Its noblest tradition is never to look the other way. Just under two weeks ago, we were about to print an issue that we had been planning for some time, and which also involved L’Uomo Vogue in a twin project. But to speak of anything else – while people are dying, doctors and nurses are risking their lives and the world is changing forever – is not the DNA of Vogue Italia. Accordingly, we shelved our project and started from scratch. The decision to print a completely white cover for the first time in our history is not because there was any lack of images – quite the opposite. We chose it because white signifies many things at the same time. 🤍🤍🤍 White is first of all respect. White is rebirth, the light after darkness, the sum of all colours. White is the colour of the uniforms worn by those who put their own lives on the line to save ours. It represents space and time to think, as well as to stay silent. White is for those who are filling this empty time and space with ideas, thoughts, stories, lines of verse, music and care for others. White recalls when, after the crisis of 1929, this immaculate colour was adopted for clothes as an expression of purity in the present, and of hope in the future. Above all: white is not surrender, but a blank sheet waiting to be written, the title page of a new story that is about to begin.” #EmanueleFarneti @EFarneti #imagine #FarAwaySoClose #WhiteCanvas — Read the full Editor’s letter via link in bio. On the cover of our new issue, a man plays the double bass alone on his roof. Captured by photographer @jermcohen from his home in Bushwick, musician Gene Baker is most New Yorkers right now–living through a global pandemic that has already remade many cities across the world. This special issue is a guide to surviving the plague we’re living through. It also marks the very first issue of New York Magazine produced entirely remotely–from the bedrooms and living rooms (and for some in two-career, one-bedroom households, bathrooms) of its staff. “We decided to scratch much of the conventions of a typical issue and rebuild this one to suit the particular needs and circumstances,” says New York editor-in-chief David Haskell. “We knew we wanted to make a special project—a cover-to-cover attempt to help our readers adjust to the weirdness and difficulty of mass self-isolation.” Link in bio.

Ogni mattina, percorrendo i 55 km di strada che la dividono dall’ospedale di Bergamo dove lavora, la dottoressa Caterina Conti pensa a quanto il suo lavoro possa fare la differenza. «Mi attacco a quel pensiero.

Since the coronavirus was declared a pandemic on March 11, many companies have attempted to rapidly move their operations, culture, management style and communications fully online. The first few days were great. No need to put together an outfit, no reason to comb your hair or even look in the mirror. No commute! But unlike many things in life, working from home does not always get better with experience. The coronavirus pandemic has utterly disrupted the way millions of us work, and while the public health emergency will someday dissipate, some aspects of the ‘Work From Home Revolution’ are likely here to stay. We’re yet to see if Pakistani fashion magazines would choose to put front line workers on the front cover of their magazines instead of the usual models/celebrities to celebrate all the hard work the doctors, nurses and medical staff is putting in to fight corona in Pakistan. Keeping in mind the conditions the medical community is working in, they definitely need to be applauded for risking their lives in the line of duty.

Some people have been asking the Lux Style Awards to award the medical community with awards at the next LSA’s as these doctors and nurses deserve all the respect in the world for all that they are doing at a time when the rest of us watch helplessly.

What do you think of these covers? Let us know in the comment below.

Haier Pakistan Donates 2nd Batch Of Protective Material To Government Of Pakistan

Coronavirus pandemic is spreading like fire and the only way to fight it, is to keep ourselves protected. To prevent the infection from spreading, people are using medical masks, goggles and protection equipment. Due to the extensive use of these protective gears, there is a huge shortage of medical equipment from the market of Pakistan.

Haier Pakistan donates the 2nd batch of protective gear which included, 4000 N95 Masks, 50,000 Nitrile gloves, 4,000 Goggles, 20,000 Surgical Masks, 4,000 Face Shields and 1,500 Protective Suits to the Government of Pakistan. The material was handed over by Haier to the Pakistan Embassy in China and delivered to Pakistan on urgent basis through a special aircraft.

Hospitals and medical workers across the country are in desperate need of donations to protect the health care professionals who are fighting on the frontline. We at Haier Pakistan are here to stay with our people in these hard times and are geared up to provide support in any possible means to ease their pain. Haier donated 25,000 Ration Bags to the people to keep them and their families going through this tough time of lockdown, as a lot of them are daily wagers and unable to bear the expenses of their families due to this lockdown.

Haier Pakistan wants everyone to stay safe!
