Senate passes bill: Allows 6 month paid maternity leave, 3 month paternity leave

Maternity leave

Paternity and maternity leaves are the right of all women around the globe. Sadly, in Pakistan, there are no laws in regard to this.

However, starting a family won’t be a problem for the working class since the Senate passed the Maternity and Paternity Leave Bill, 2018 on Monday.

The bill makes it necessary for employers to award 6-month paid maternity leave and 3-month paid paternity leave to workers.

According to the bill, the leaves the policy will be acceptable in both public and private organizations.

The bill, presented by Senator Quratulain Marri, was passed with a majority of votes, even as government senators opposed the move.

It will now be sent to the National Assembly for debate.

The bill reads ” the employees of every establishment shall be provided six-months paid maternity and three-months paternity leave as and when applied by employees, separately from their leave account, commencing from the date as applied by the applicant in the application and supported by a medical certificate.”

Furthermore, the ordinance also gives extra three-month maternity leave and one-month paternity leave, both of which would not be paid.

A lot of government officials are not in favor of the bill and Minister for Economic Affairs Hammad Azhar, while opposing the bill, told that there was already a law to give 90-day maternity leave to female employees, while male government employees could benefit 48-day leaves in a year.

He proposed lowering the number of paternity leaves to 15 days, adding that nowhere in the world was there a requirement for these many paternity leaves.

Let’s hope Pakistan understands the grave importance of raising a child and employers learn to be supportive.

Transparency International Issues Report: Corruption Set a Record in 2019

Whatsapp

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan on Friday announced that lately published Transparency International (TI) report on crime was prejudiced.

Pakistan was indexed 120 out of 180 countries on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2019 by the TI, a worldwide non-governmental organization ascertained in Berlin.

Speaking to the media in Islamabad on Friday afternoon, Awan explained that the report was unfair, declaring that there had been more crime in Pakistan during the government of retired premier Nawaz Sharif.

Furthermore, the assistant to the PM declared ”there is a long history of corruption in Sindh. The government of former premier Nawaz Sharif gave undue benefits to the chief of the group here in Pakistan,”

“Who will accept the Transparency International report?” Awan inquired, noting that the administration of Sharif had even given a prudent posting to the chief of TI in order to gain excessive endorsements.

The latest CPI report states that corruption in Pakistan boosted in 2019 as oppose to 2018.

Achieving 32 on the CPI in 2019, Pakistan not only dropped one point below the 2018 score of 33 but also lowered three stages in the world rating from the prior 117th to the latest 120th among 180 countries.

It implies that Pakistan, which was once the 63rd most violent country, is now 60th most corrupt region. This is also the first time in ten years that Pakistan enrolled a decrease in their CPI score

https://youtu.be/opCAG5Pgp_s

Awan added, ’corruption kings’ are using this report as a tool to hide their sins, but they will be disappointed. Moody’s and other international agencies have not only recognized an improvement in the country’s economic indicators but have also appreciated the efforts being taken by the government.”

Why Imran Khan Won’t Criticize China: World Economic Forum 2020

Pakistan China

On Jan. 22, Prime Minister of Pakistan met with Foreign Policy’s editor in chief Jonathan Tepperman at the World Economic Forum 2020 meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

Jonathan Tepperman (JT) interviewed Khan and topics of the discussion revolved around Kashmir’s issue with Modi, meeting with Trump, and also why Khan won’t criticize China.

JT questioned Khan asking: “You’ve been very vocal about criticizing India’s treatment of its Muslims and the oppression of Muslims around the world, with one notable exception: China. Why have you been so quiet about the persecution of China’s Muslims in Xinjiang and elsewhere?”

To which Khan responded, “Well, two reasons. One main reason is that the scale of what is going on in China—and frankly, I don’t know much about it, I just occasionally read about it—is nothing compared to what is happening in Kashmir.”

JT added, “With all due respect, we’re talking about some 1 million to 2 million people being detained in Xinjiang. That’s not nothing.”

Khan then explained, But what is happening in Kashmir is 8 million people under siege for five months. Over the last 30 years, about 100,000 people have been killed in Kashmir. And all the top [Kashmiri] leadership is in jail. So it’s the scale of what is happening.”

He further added, “As far as the Uighurs, look—China has helped us. China came to help our government when we were at the rock bottom. So we are really grateful to the Chinese government, and we decided that whatever issues we will have with China, we will deal with them privately. We will not go public.”

Pakistan is allied with China and any issues faced in the future will be discussed privately and not public says the Prime Minister.
