FDA Approves COVID-19 Diagnostic Kit For Self-Testing At Home

The first self-testing COVID-19 test kit was authorised in the US yesterday. Is it going to be a step in the right direction?

The Latest News

Yesterday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization for the first COVID-19 diagnostic test for self-testing from the comfort of the home. It has been promised to provide rapid results too. Now the result of the test can be found within half an hour as opposed to days before.

The kit has been named the ‘Lucira COVID-19 All-In-One Test Kit’. It is a molecular (real-time loop-mediated amplification reaction) single-use test that is designed to detect the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19.

How Is This A Development?

COVID-19 diagnostic tests were authorized for at-home collection previously. There are now drive-throughs at several hospitals too that take the test without having the person come inside the hospital. However, this is the first that can be fully self-administered and provide results at home.

The Lucira COVID-19 All-In-One Test Kit test has been authorized for home use with self-collected nasal swab samples. It is suitable for individuals age 14 and older who are suspected of COVID-19 by their health care provider. The test is currently, however, only authorized for prescription use. In other words, you can not purchase it from your regular pharmacy, you need your doctor’s prescription.

How Does The Kit Work?

The swab is pushed into the nose the usual way. The test then works by swirling the self-collected sample swab in a vial that is placed in the test unit which comes in the kit. In 30 minutes approximately, the results can be read directly from the test unit’s light-up display. It shows whether a person is positive or negative for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

How Does One Proceed?

Positive results indicate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 which means the person is carrying the coronavirus germ. Individuals with positive results than naturally have to self-isolate and seek additional care from their health care provider. On the other hand, individuals who test negative and experience COVID-like symptoms follow up with their health care provider. This is also an essential step as negative results do not preclude an individual from SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Why Are Tests Important?

Diagnostic testing remains one of the best strategies in response to COVID-19. By making self-administered kits available to all the transmission can be controlled to a great extent.

Grab a random Pakistani and ask him/her about the best food; they will most definitely say roadside food. No matter how many famous outlets open up, roadside food remains stuck in our minds.

This category of making roadside food, however, remains dominated by men for some reason. Considering women are supposed to handle the kitchen, men, cooking on the streets, doesn’t go with that belief. That said, since the public sphere has become very dangerous for women, our patriarchal society limits the movement for women on the streets.

This news where a Karachi woman runs her food stall without help from men in either cooking or any other reason comes as an interesting one.

In a Facebook group for Karachi, a lady posted about her encounter with this Karachi woman. Utterly impressed, she wanted people to support her as much as they could:

“A lady is running her own business with passion and motivation. She made everything herself… Zinger burger, limca, anday walla burger… Etc etc.

So we know what is available at her stall. She has the Zinger burger, Limca, Anday wala burger (our signature roadside food), among other things because, for one, we can see the range of drinks she can provide.

Why she needs our respect and support?

Moreover, while what the woman is doing deserves praise, we also need to acknowledge the strength it took for her to come out and work. It is not like women cannot work; many Karachi women do work, mostly in offices. So working on the streets knowing that it could be dangerous and continuously facing men who, without a doubt, would be eyeing her as they walk past, is something that demands respect.

So while we do need to order from big brand outlets because we have seen in the recent lockdown that if they do not work well, it is the people on the ground level who suffer, we also need to support such respectable and brave people who are trying to make an earning for themselves and their family, because who knows what led to her, instead of the men in her house, leaving her household in this patriarchal society.

OnePlus is a company that took hold of a stormy beginning. It’s like if you play chess using a technique known as Queen’s Gambit. If referring to the battery capacity, the phone sits at 4510mah, which is ample for phones these days. If we look at the specifications even further, the phone has a 128/256 storage variant with either 8 or 12GB ram. However, the absence of the slot for an SD card does prove a form of drawback. Then again, does one need an SD card after 128 or 256GB?

The Samsung:

This is one of the most powerful phones that Samsung has ever made. There are two notable flagship series of Samsung to date. As history dictates, the S series and the note series climb up on the top when it comes to premium. The S4 had the first retinal feature of the series, which baffled many users at the time. So, the Samsung S20 Ultra is the company’s wild card. Its chipset is the Exynos 990. It is an impressive processor, but it does not compete well with the Snapdragon 865.

The most robust feature of the phone is its 108-megapixel camera. You can shoot an apple of a person’s head at a distance using just this camera. Its battery is set at a high 5000mah capacity. New Medical AI Can Take Vitals Without Disturbing Patients

The latest development in the healthcare industry will relieve nurses and help patients rest better. Can you guess what AI has done?

The Dreadful Rounds

If you have ever spent a night or day in a hospital with a loved one, you’ll know about the dreadful rounds. The nurses come almost hourly to check the patients’ vitals. While this may be necessary, it disturbs the patients and is too taxing work for the nurses. There’s never just one patient; they do it with tens of them.

New Research Says What?

A team of doctors at the Feinstein Institutes for Research in New York says that overnight disruptions cause more harm than good. They can result in cognitive impairment, hypertension, extra stress, or other negative impacts on patients. Moreover, it is far more increased work for nurses.

What’s The Solution?

To develop a better way to keep the patients safe and the workload of nurses to reduce, the team started their research. They studied vital sign measurements taken from patients at Northwell Health hospitals between 2012 and 2019. This humongous data collected included respiratory rate, heart rate, systolic blood pressure, body temperature, and age.

This information was then used to develop a deep-learning predictive clinical tool that uses AI. The device can predict a patient’s overnight stability, eliminating the need for multiple vital checks. The study revealed that the AI only misclassified two out of 10,000 patients overnight hospital stays. The team also remarked that nurses could quickly fix those misclassifications on typical rounds.

Hear From Them

This is not to say that nurses will not be around to check anymore in the case of exceptions. The predicted model will be used and confirmed, but instead of 6 rounds, there might be a need for just two now.

“Rest is a critical element to a patient’s care. It has been well-documented that disrupted sleep is a common complaint that could delay discharge and recovery.” Zanos also noted that the team’s findings highlight the safety and accuracy of machine learning-based solutions.

How Does AI Help Nurses?

The AI tool can also potentially help overburdened nurses and hospital staff. According to the research team, nurses spend 20-35% of their time documenting vitals only. Additionally, approximately 10% percent of their shift is spent collecting them. They must do an average of four to five hours of work per patient. The researchers said that the new tool could mean a 20-25% workload reduction for nurses in one overnight shift.
