New Electric Taxis In Karachi? Here’s Everything You Need To Know

Sharjeel Memon, the Sindh Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, declared that an up-to-date, reasonably priced, and environmentally friendly electric taxi service will soon be introduced in Karachi and expanded to other significant cities around the province. After touring the under-construction Bus Rapid Transport Red Line project, which was launched with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank, here on Sunday, the minister made this revelation to the media.

An effort to improve the transportation crisis in Karachi

He said that the city’s current online cab firms were charging extremely exorbitant rates. He stated that the Sindh government was working to offer citizens affordable taxi service and that the Pakistan People’s Party leadership had instructed to speed up the pace of work on all ongoing public transportation projects in Karachi in order to address the city’s long-standing transportation issue. He said that the city has seen the inauguration of public transportation projects costing billions of dollars. To expand the number of buses in the city and upgrade the transportation system, the Sindh Mass Transit Authority worked day and night.

An initiative to sustainability?

In this context, work will shortly begin on the first biogas factory in Pakistan. He claimed that Sindh has the distinction of launching Pakistan’s first electric bus service and that construction is already underway on a BRT red line that will operate on environmentally friendly biogas.

The electric taxis are coming with the hope of cheaper fares since fuel is skyrocketing at the moment along with the reduction of air and noise pollution which enveloped the city of Karachi. He claimed that the Orange Line and People’s Bus Services had been launched by the Sindh Transport Department. The city’s official electric bus service will soon begin operating. The BRT Yellow Line project, which has the assistance of the World Bank, was nearing completion and that construction will soon begin. All major cities in the world, according to him, have cutting-edge public transportation systems, including BRT.

A happening time for Karachi since many projects are awaited

“The government of Sindh is working to establish a modern public transportation system in Karachi, the nation’s financial capital. The Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) is a very old project”, the minister added. The project had been incorporated into the CPEC projects thanks to the efforts of Chief Minister Sindh.

In answer to a query, he stated that all federal agencies, including the Malir Cantonment Board, had adopted the BRT Red Line project and were providing complete support for its development. He said that all encroachments on the Red Line Corridor of the BRT Project will be eliminated, and Karachi administrations had been given a week to do so.

The leadership of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has enquired about the project with the Sindh government. In order to provide the people of Karachi with the best possible services, they also wish to finish the city’s transportation-related projects as soon as possible.

K-Electric Announces Winners Of The First 7/11+ Innovation Challenge

KARACHI, November 25, 2022: K-Electric (KE) announced the winners for the first 7/11+ Innovation Challenge in partnership with INNOVentures Global at a day-long event held at Habib University in Karachi.

KE’s 7/11+ Innovation Challenge is the first-of-its-kind event in Pakistan’s utility market, designed for entrepreneurs, startups, researchers, and university students to promote and accelerate strategic innovation. Participants spent the first half of the day making final pitches to the esteemed Jury followed by a panel discussion and award announcement in the second half. Chairman NEPRA, Tauseef H. Farooqi was also in attendance as the Chief Guest.

The challenge is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), particularly Goal 7 – access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all and Goal 11 – sustainable, inclusive, safe, and resilient cities and communities. K-Electric aims to highlight the importance of innovative problem-solving and critical thinking within the public and provide a platform to convene organizations and individuals across Pakistan working at the critical intersection of sustainability and innovation.

Participants from various scholastic backgrounds took part in this Innovation Challenge in teams, beginning in February of 2022 going through stages of pitches, capacity-building sessions, and focused mentoring. The journey began with over 300 applications hailing from several startups, universities, and relevant fields of study out of which 10 teams made it to the finals.

Speaking to the audience, Tauseef H Farooqi, the Chairman of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) shared that “As a regulator, we have a tremendous responsibility towards a society that extends beyond the creation of affordable, accessible and reliable energy supply. We must also support the community, through constant innovation and development. Under our Power with Prosperity, Power with Safety, Power with Equality, Power with Security, and Power with Unity plans we have uplifted and transformed the socio-economic landscape of Pakistan aligned with the UNSDG’s to impact over 32 million lives, creating over 46,000 jobs including 8,400 jobs of women alone with over 32 Billion Rupees of financing. All this was aimed at promoting workplace safety, diversity and inclusion, and security. Innovation is imperative for positive change and we must continue to strive for a better and brighter future.” Mr. Farooqi also endorsed how K-Electric, the only vertically integrated power distribution company in Pakistan, was stimulating grass-root level impact through their best practices and serving as a role model within the power sector.

The Innovation Challenge Jury was made up of dynamic profiles in the current Pakistani innovation ecology including Farhan Anwar, Assistant Professor of Practice Social Development and Policy at Habib University, Seher Abbas, Co-Chair, Karachi Hub Women in Energy & IFC, Sheikh Imranul Haq, Energy Expert, Shehryar Hydri, MP, Deosai Ventures, Shaista Ayesha, CEO of SEED Ventures, Naeem Zamindar, Founder of Neem Financials and Naz Khan, CSO at KE. Together they selected the top 10 finalists which included Ezbike with their electric bike and battery swapping service, Ezgeyser with the sustainable energy plan, Lorawan with meter reading retrofit, Novel Insulator with an insulator design, OptimaLoad with a solution to balance the load on a transformer Orko with an application to manage EV charging stations, Power Distribution Improvement with an efficient short and long term demand forecasting technique, Smart Transformer Health with a device to monitor the health of a transformer, Thingsty with IoT applications for domestic and commercial users and Vtol Dynamics with drones for geospatial survey and monitoring. The total cash prize pool was 3 million PKRs – 1.5 million to the winner, 750,000 PKRs each for the first and 2nd runners up.

After a rigorous and competitive journey, the Energy Informatics Company of LUMS emerged as the winner for their Data Analytics based Prediction and Forecasting model, while ezBike’s Electric bike and charging infrastructure was awarded first runner up and NUST PNEC’s was the second runner-up for their LoRaWan based meter retrofit technology capable of incorporating smart technology on conventional electricity meters.

Fourth Adab Festival Kicks Off On A High Note

Karachi, Saturday, November 26, 2022: The first day of the two-day Fourth Adab Festival
opened to a mammoth crowd here today. People of all ages could be seen jostling with one
another as they rushed from one interesting session to the other so as not to miss out on their favourite speakers and authors. Habib University students participated in sessions and there was a good representation of the youth at the Festival.

The morning session began with the inauguration ceremony in which the national anthem and Adeb Festival Song were sung, followed by the welcome address by Ameena Saiyid Founder and Director, and Shama Askari Director, Adab Festival. Speeches by Zehra Nigah, Maria Rehman, Deputy Director, British Council, Wasif Rizvi, President Habib University, HE Dr. Ruediger Lotz, followed after which Tariq Alexander Qaiser and Sherry Rehman gave keynote addresses. Dr. Tanveer Anjum was awarded the Adab Festival/Infaq Foundation Prize 2022 for Urdu Writing and Sheema Kermani performed a dance.

people together to connect and collaborate on creative responses to the climate emergency. The Adab Festival aims to stimulate conversations around the climate emergency and inspire transformational change.”

Wasif Rizvi, President Habib University, said, “Pakistan will soon be unliveable for
humans. Extreme weather events – disastrous rains, lethal floods, devastating droughts and heatwaves – have made such unimaginable catastrophe a lived reality for the people of Pakistan. Change in Pakistan will likely have increasingly terrible impacts on food security and water scarcity. Despite this existential threat, Pakistan has done little to impact the mainstream climate change narrative. Habib University is an intellectually vibrant institution that considers it our responsibility to initiate critical discourse highlighting the severity of such existential threats. Habib University’s intellectual programme is aimed at making society think beyond existing narratives and fostering alternative possibilities. The theme of the 4th Adab Festival – ‘Climate Change’ – is close to Habib University’s mission of working towards protecting our ecosystem, hence we are delighted to play our part by joining hands with Adab Festival.”

Adab Festival introduced new, innovative, creative approaches to promoting books, reading, authors, raising awareness of climate change by entertaining and engaging the audience through art exhibits, film, presentations, dramatic readings, debate, comedy, music, song, art and dance. Adab Festival celebrated public space and the cultural diversity of Karachi.

Standard Chartered And Karachi United Launch Fifth Football Youth League

Karachi, 25 November 2022: Standard Chartered Bank (SCBPL) announced the launch of its “Standard Chartered Karachi United Youth League” as part of its community service mandate to promote sports amongst children. This is the fifth year in a row that the Bank is sponsoring the league in what has become part of the local football fabric and culture, for the opportunity the league provides to over 1000 children annually.

The objective of the “Standard Chartered Karachi United Youth League” is to provide a platform for youth football teams from across the underserved areas of Karachi to come together, break barriers and inculcate the spirit and culture of sport and competition.

At the beginning of the year, Standard Chartered Bank and Karachi United also organised a Youth Football League in Islamabad where more than 400 children (boys & girls) participated.

The Bank has been sponsoring this league since 2017, supporting over 4000 children through sports.

This year’s league will see 1084 boys’ competitions in the following age categories: Under 10 years, Under 12 years, Under 14 years, and Under 16 years including a Government School competition. The format is that of a group system from which the top teams qualify directly for the quarter-finals and beyond. The Standard Chartered KU Youth League will also increase girls’ participation (through a Girls’ tournament) this year to 120 girls.

A total of 213 matches will be played in six different locations including Old Golimar, Shireen Jinnah Colony, Malir, Baldia, Ibrahim Hyderi, and Orangi Town, which promises to attract football fans from all over Karachi. In order to increase the standard of the league, kits are provided to each participant along with the appointment of official referees and match commissioners for every match.

Over the last four years more than 4000 children went through the SC KU league experience which was not only restricted to Football, but also included coaching in life skills, teamwork and other areas of life in general. Additionally, and significantly, in line with SC’s Future Makers program, we have started witnessing former Youth League participants become coaches for their teams and continue their education. We are committed to this program and look forward to developing more Future Makers as a result of this league.

Lastly, our coaches continue to benefit from the linkage with Liverpool FC’s Train the Trainer program. The syllabus and coaching methodology has been implemented across all Community Centres and we now look forward to engaging Government schools to amplify the impact.”
