Scandal, Protesting Stars & Bans as Cannes Festival Opens!

Cannes2018

The most political Cannes film festival in years opens Tuesday with female stars vowing to protest on the red carpet, two top directors barred from attending and ban hanging over other movies.

With the industry still reeling from the Harvey Weinstein scandal, and Cannes under fire for its dearth of women directors, Cate Blanchett and Kristen Stewart are likely to join actresses and women directors Saturday in a protest in support of the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements.

festival-de-cannes-2018

The new “Star Wars” spin-off, “Solo”, is the only Hollywood blockbuster in a slightly less starry line-up than usual.

But with no less than a dozen films with LGBT themes, and others tackling child abuse, male prostitution and an eye-watering DIY sex change, it has all the makings of a vintage year for scandal and controversy.

A new documentary about the tragic singer Whitney Houston by Oscar-winner Kevin Macdonald reportedly includes a devastating revelation about the demons that dogged her short life.

“Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler — whose film is breaking box office records — is also likely to tackle the lack of black faces in Hollywood in a Cannes masterclass.

Lesbian Film Banned

With Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam fighting in the French courts to have his disaster-plagued “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” shown, the first Kenyan movie to be selected for the world’s top festival has already been banned in its homeland for daring to depict a lesbian romance.

Despite a plea by US director Oliver Stone, Tehran has refused to lift a travel ban on Iranian master Jafar Panahi, whose “Three Faces” is in the running for the top Palme d’Or prize.

The dissident director made it clandestinely after being banned from making films for 20 years for his activism after the “stolen election” of 2009.

Appeals to bail Russia’s Kirill Serebrennikov, under house arrest in Moscow on embezzlement charges his supporters claim are political, have also fallen on deaf ears.

Festival director Thierry Fremaux told reporters Monday that it was ironic that both Iran and Russia should be “punishing the directors when neither film is political”.

Serious doubts also hang over whether Gilliam’s Pythonesque movie will be allowed to close the festival after it became embroiled in a bitter legal battle over who owns the rights.

Judges in Paris will decide Wednesday whether the film, which Gilliam has labored on for nearly two decades, can be shown.

‘Problem with Women’

But it is Cannes’ “dismal” record on female directors, and Saturday’s red carpet protest led by A-list stars, which may generate the most political heat.

Long before Weinstein had been accused of attacking four women at the festival, Cannes had been under fire for a “problem with women”.

Women have been stopped on the red carpet in previous years for not wearing high heels, and its dress code has been condemned as sexist.

But the Weinstein scandal has given its critics further ammunition, with screenwriter Kate Muir of Women and Hollywood lacerating the festival as “a two-week celebration of male brains and female beauty”.

The fact that only three out of 21 directors in the running for the top prize are women — the same number as last year — has also rankled.

While admitting that Cannes “will never be the same again” after the Weinstein scandal, Fremaux said he was against quotas.

Instead, he put Hollywood star Blanchett — one of the first to call out Weinstein — at the head a majority-female jury alongside another of Weinstein’s victims, French “Bond” actress Lea Seydoux.

But Fremaux’s surprise decision to lift the festival’s seven-year ban on Danish director Lars von Trier has stoked feminist ire.

The aging provocateur has been accused of sexual harassment by the singer Bjork, and his production company has been hit by multiple similar claims.

Von Trier sparked outrage during a 2011 Cannes press conference by saying that he was a Nazi who understood Hitler and sympathized “with him a little bit”.

But Michel Hazanavicius, the Oscar-winning director of “The Artist”, who is on the festival’s board, insisted von Trier was joking, while Fremaux said Monday that the Dane was not an anti-Semite.

Pointedly, however, he has not risked giving von Trier a press conference this time for his new serial killer flick, “The House That Jack Built” with Uma Thurman and Matt Dillon.

Hazanavicius said the veteran Swiss-French director Jean-Luc Godard, whose latest film is also at Cannes, has also said “much worse things than Lars von Trier on this very same topic”.

But that “doesn’t mean we have to condemn them” as artists, he added.

“It’s very difficult for people to accept the idea that you can be a jerk in your personal life and a great artist.”

MET Gala: Five Years of Eclectic Red Carpet Beauty

On Monday night the world’s biggest stars and most prestigious fashion designers will take to the red carpet in New York for the 2018 Met Gala.

As they scrub up for the biggest night out of the year — and wrestle with the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s theme of “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” we take a look back at some of the most striking beauty looks served up over the past five years.

2017: Cara Delevingne

British supermodel and actress Cara Delevingne caused a sensation at last year’s MET Gala, when she took to the red carpet with a shaved scalp, painted a futuristic silver to match her outfit, and the “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons” theme.

2016: Katy Perry

Popstar Katy Perry took the 2017 gala’s theme of “Manus vs. Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” very seriously, rocking up to the event with a severe beehive updo. She also sported a striking blue mascara and black gothic lipstick combination, crafted with products from her CoverGirl makeup range, which had recently launched at the time.

2015: Selena Gomez

Singer and actress Selena Gomez nodded to the 2015 gala’s theme of “China: Through the Looking Glass” with an elegant, avant-garde headpiece made out of white orchids — a look she complemented with a bold, red lip.

2014: Joan Smalls

Puerto Rican model Joan Smalls kept things simple and stunning for the 2014 gala, which came with a dress code of “Charles James: Beyond Fashion.” Her strapless gown was paired seamlessly with a bold, purple lipstick hue and gorgeous fishtail braid.

2013: Miley Cyrus

Popstar Miley Cyrus divided opinion with her choice of dress for the 2013 gala (theme: “Punk: Chaos to Couture”), but there’s no doubt that her spiky peroxide hairstyle was one of the most eye-catching on the red carpet that year.

Will Burberry Be the Next Fashion House to Go Fur-Free?

Burberry

Burberry has revealed that it is considering dropping real animal fur from its collections, as the material becomes increasingly out of fashion.

The British luxury brand is reviewing its use of real fur, it told The Sunday Times over the weekend, and pointed out: “There wasn’t any real fur in Burberry’s September 2017 or February 2018 runway collections.”

The news has been welcomed by the animal welfare group Humane Society International (HSI), whose Executive Director Claire Bass said in a statement: “HSI first met with Burberry almost a decade ago to urge the brand to drop fur, so we are delighted that this iconic British fashion giant is finally reviewing its fur policy.” \

Referencing an upcoming UK Parliamentary debate on the issue of instating a nationwide ban on fur, she added: “Burberry’s fur review couldn’t have come at a better time because it will hopefully send a strong signal to MPs that even the most British of brands is recognising that fur has no place in our nation of animal lovers.”

Fur farming has been illegal in the UK in 2000, but the country imports and sells fur from animals including fox, rabbit, mink, and chinchilla.

Anti-fur stances are fast becoming a major fashion trend, with John Galliano and Donatella Versace just two of the high-profile designers to eschew the use of the material so far this year. In March Versace told the press that her fashion empire will stop using fur in its collections, with fellow Italian brand Furla also making a similar pledge the same month, announcing plans to be a fur-free brand by 2019.

Last year saw Michael Kors, Jimmy Choo, and Gucci sign up to the growing anti-fur movement. Luxury heavyweights Armani, Hugo Boss, and Stella McCartney already operate fur-free models.

meesha shafi

Meesha Shafi has managed to make headline again with a tweet that she did not post – but rather, retweeted.

A few days back, Pakistani’s woke up to claims of Meesha accusing Ali Zafar of sexual harassment on her Twitter account.

Ali Zafar-Meesha Shafi Jamming Session Video Leaked on Social Media

Her tweet has sparked a controversy that would not be forgotten for years to come!

Ali Zafar, however, chose not to respond to this accusation on social media and instead chose to take matters to the court.

The whole matter sparked a furious debate on social media with several celebrities divided between the two personalities as well as fans of the two voicing their thoughts.

But they are not the only ones who seem to have an opinion on this matter. Nope, it seems that the issue has crossed borders and taken the notice of the neighboring country.

Check out what they wrote!

Retweeting the post, Meesha expressed her gratitude towards the organization.

WhatApp’s New Update Will NOT be Liked by Users!

WhatsApp is bringing a new change to its format, however, users are not going to like it!

WhatsApp founder Jan Koum left Facebook earlier this week, according to the speculations, the application will now be open to advertisers!

Review Of Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 | Brandsynario

Facebook’s vice president of messaging products, David Marcus, has said WhatsApp will be more open to advertisers.

Speaking to CNBC, he said: “As far as advertising is concerned, we’re definitely getting WhatsApp more open.”

“We’re now going to have the ability to enable larger companies, not only small businesses, to integrate a new API [application programming interface] to send and receive messages with people on the WhatsApp platform.”

Analysts have predicted that Koum’s departure will mean a possible wake of events which will encourage a format change encouraging advertisers.

Barclays analysts said;

“We normally wouldn’t publish a note on an executive departure, but we think Jan Koum’s departure as potentially significant implications. We’ve been told by many of our checks over the last few years that once Jan leaves, that’s when the ads show up.”

Koum’s blog post has talked about why he has always wanted to keep the platform ad-free. The platform reads;

“These days companies know literally everything about you, your friends, your interests, and they use it all to sell ads.

When we sat down to start our own thing together three years ago we wanted to make something that wasn’t just another ad clearinghouse.

We wanted to spend our time building a service people wanted to use because it worked and saved them money and made their lives better in a small way. We knew that we could charge people directly if we could do all those things. We knew we could do what most people aim to do every day: avoid ads.

No one wakes up excited to see more advertising, no one goes to sleep thinking about the ads they’ll see tomorrow. We know people go to sleep excited about who they chatted with that day (and disappointed about who they didn’t).

We want WhatsApp to be the product that keeps you awake… and that you reach for in the morning. No one jumps up from a nap and runs to see an advertisement.”

She has carved out a successful side hustle as a shoe designer, so it is no surprise that Katy Perry has been selected by the Fashion Footwear Association of New York (FFANY) to front its upcoming “FFANY Shoes on Sale” gala.

The pop princess will serve as the 2018 PSA Ambassador for the 25th Anniversary of the annual event, which is supported by shopping platform QVC and supports research and education programs targeting breast cancer.

“I’m proud to be able to partner Katy Perry Collections with FFANY and QVC in the fight against breast cancer,” said Perry in a statement. “This is an issue that is near and dear to my heart, especially because my aunt passed away from it in 1986. I have always been proud to support the cause and am grateful to have yet another platform to help find a cure.”

The gala, which will take place in New York on October 11, will see donated footwear sold across QVC platforms. Rishi Kapoor’s Talks About Pakistani Celebrities on India Media

rishi kapoor

There are two prominent Indian personalities who are famous for their controversial statements against Pakistan and they are none other than Rishi Kapoor and Arnab Goswami.

In a recent interview on Arnab’s show “Nation Wants To Know With Arnab Goswami”, Rishi Kapoor was in the hot seat and things certainly got heated alright!

We all know Rishi has always spoken out against Pakistan, however, there have been a few times when he has been seen supporting our nation as well.

The interview with Arnab covered one such occasion where Rishi was seen talking about supporting the peace between the two neighboring countries.

#RishiSpeaksToArnab | I love this country, but how many more widows and orphans will you see? We have to sort out problems with Pakistan: Rishi Kapoor

Posted by Republic on Saturday, May 5, 2018

Rishi tweeted about his interview saying:

Referring to relations between India and Pakistan as a ‘jhagra‘, a term used when two friends squabble, Rishi Kapoor said:

“This fight has to end some day,”

When Goswami tried to grill him on the term “jhagra”, Kapoor stood his ground and didn’t falter.

He went on to add:

“I love this country but how many widows and orphans do you want to see,” he said. “People are dying here and people are dying there (in Pakistan). We have to sort our problems with Pakistan.”

The conversation drifted towards a tweet that Rishi Kapoor had posted a year back in support of Pakistani players being included in IPL.

“I was shocked when you tweeted that,” Goswami accused. “It was so insensitive. Would any Pakistani star behave like that? Tell me one Pakistani star who takes an anti-Pakistan position?”

To which Rishi responded:

“I don’t even know if they have any stars in Pakistan, please,” Rishi Kapoor said in response. “There are some actors who are very popular…”

Eventually, the conversation steered towards working with Fawad Khan to which Rishi replied that he had worked with him in ‘Kapoor and Sons’.

He further asked if he can work with a Pakistani actor then why the Indian cricket team play can’t with Pakistani players.

The interview covered a lot more including the fact that Rishi Kapoor can get quite abusive on Twitter, to which the latter replied:

“I am what I am and will not change,” he said. “If you don’t like it, don’t follow me.”

It’s nice to see Rishi Kapoor speaking up for Pakistan for once – however, we would like to remind the popular actor that Pakistan too has its fair share of “stars”. Take your co-actor from ‘Kapoor and Sons’ for example.

Viral WhatsApp Bug is Causing Smartphones to Crash!

WhatsApp Crash

A viral message on WhatsApp is causing major trouble to the application and to the user’s phone! In the latest update of scams and frauds, another one has spurred trouble!

Upon receiving it, the application crashes, and consists of text in the Indian language Telegu. It reads, “I can hang your WhatsApp for a while, just touch below message.”

whatsapp scam

Yet Another Bug is Crashing your iPhone!

The message is being forwarded to both iOS and Android users across Pakistan. In the message, a black dot is being displayed. Apparently, if you tap it, your WhatsApp application goes unresponsive for some time.

Obviously, the black dot is not exactly the reason behind this abnormal behavior. The application crashes because of the space in between the text return and the black dot. When converted to HTML the text has the right-to-left mark, however, the invisible character separates left-to-right mark from the right-to-left mark, causing irregular formatting of the text, forcing the application to crash.

Where some have been ignoring the message, the popularity has led to some curious-minded individuals to try it out, thus spreading the scam further. Sometime back, other scams had also become very popular as WhatsApp is one of the most globally used communication applications.

Have you fallen victim to it? Share your experience with us in the comments below.

Bahria Town Lahore’s Plaza Collapses! [Watch Leaked Video]

bahriatownlahore

A video has surfaced of a plaza collapsing in Bahria Town Lahore. The tenant has accused the administration for their negligence towards the building and plot.

Plaza Tenant DWP Group had stated that a new building was in construction in the adjacent plot, as the work was going about, an underground water pipeline had burst causing water to pool the plaza’s foundation, thus causing the collapse.

Supreme Court Bars Bahria Town Karachi From Sale, Purchase of Land

The water issue was immediately reported to Bahira Town administration, but according to the tenant, it was not attended to immediately, which led to the falling of the plaza.

“The building collapsed while the laborers were working there, but we were lucky in getting them out safely before the building went down. It happened due to water pooling under the foundations of the plaza, weakening them in the process.”

The tenant added, “All the people working in the shops had been evacuated safely.” He has reached out to Cheif Justice of Pakistan asking for justice. An eyewitness claimed that while this incident had taken place Bahria Town security was missing.

Shoaib Younus, Head of Marketing at DWP Group further claimed that the contractor removed the soil without first giving support to the plaza. Pillars/beams could have been used as support for the plaza. He added that Bahria Town management is looking into the matter.

Bahira Town has not yet commented on this chaotic situation.

‘Stadium Surfing’ – Sneak Preview of Olympic Future?

A perfect wave, again and again, made to order? It’s the sort of thing that surfers all over the world might dream of as they bob about in the ocean, waiting in vain for the next foaming ticket to ride.

But while Mother Nature may be unreliable, a machine on display in this sun-baked corner of rural California this weekend, more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) from the Pacific Ocean, will serve up wave after wave for an elite-level surfing competition.

The Surf Ranch is the brainchild of legendary 11-time world champion Kelly Slater, a prototype of the giant wave pool that might one day be used to stage surfing competitions at the Olympics.

With surfing set to make its bow at the 2020 Tokyo games, the venue for the competition — natural waves or man-made — is still to be formally confirmed.

The Slater-inspired facility on show in this sleepy California town aims to present itself as a viable option for competition.

The center-piece of the Surf Ranch is a giant 640-meter long pool, where a huge metal hydrofoil is pulled along a track at one edge of the water, churning out consistent barrels and tubes.

“I always thought that if surfing is to grow it would have to be in a controlled environment,” Slater told AFP.

“I like to think that this could be part of the future. I don’t know if it THE future,” the 46-year-old added. “I think the ocean can’t be replaced. I think big waves can’t be replaced. I think the randomness of what happens in the ocean and in mother nature is a big part of why we love surfing.”

Unlike conventional surfing competitions, where the timetable is often at the mercy of the elements, at the Surf Ranch, waves are delivered more or less to order. For a competition like the Olympic Games, ever mindful of television audiences, that makes it an attractive proposition.

– Olympic future? –

The World Surf League (WSL) has bought the California facility and the concept from Slater. Construction on a similar site in Japan is set to begin later this year, and will be available to Tokyo 2020 if required, according to WSL chief executive Sophie Goldschmidt.

“So we are going to be building one in Tokyo and we hope that if it’s built and tested in time then the Olympics will consider using it because the waves at that time of year are not the best,” Goldschmidt said. “Ultimately it is not our choice.”

This weekend, Slater will captain a United States team in a WSL exhibition tournament which also includes Brazil, Australia, Europe and a team from the rest of the world.

Brazil’s Gabriel Medina and Australian veteran Mick Fanning and women’s stars Stephanie Gilmore (Australia) and Lakey Peterson (USA) are just some of the surfers who will be taking to the water.

So far, the surfers have been impressed by the man-made lake which delivers waves averaging around six feet high and traversing roughly 700 yards, offering barrel and manoeuvre sections.

“It’s easier,” admitted Brazil’s Filipe Toledo. “In the ocean it is more challenging because you’re relying on nature, waiting. Here you get a perfect wave every three minutes.

“Everyone gets the same conditions, the same opportunities, so the best surfer will win, and not necessarily one who makes a mistake or does not take enough risks.”

Gilmore, too, believes the venue makes for a true test of talent. Competitors would no longer be able to “blame it on the ocean” if they failed to deliver, she said.

The WSL are adamant, however, that artificial waves or “stadium surfing” will never replace traditional beach competitions.

“The ocean is as important as ever,” Goldschmidt said.

Slater meanwhile is dreaming of crowning his career with an appearance at the Olympics.

“It would be a great honour, to mark 40 years of competitive surfing like that,” he said.
