Jazz Contributes PKR 50 Million To PM’s COVID-19 Relief Fund

Islamabad – 19 April 2020: Pakistan’s leading digital company Jazz has contributed PKR 50 million to the Prime Minister’s COVID-19 Pandemic Relief Fund, in line with its commitment to support the government in the fight against COVID-19. In a meeting that took place between Prime Minister Imran Khan and Jazz CEO, Aamir Ibrahim, support for those in need during these trying times was reiterated. The cheque was presented to the Government specifically for health relief and food rations.

As a VEON group company, Jazz was the first telco to make an announcement pledging PKR 1.2 billion for the pandemic and demonstrated the need for others to follow. The amount gives 61 million customers access to zero-rated helplines and funds for COVID testing kits through the Shaukat Khanum hospital. The pledge also gives the opportunity for a large population of daily wagers to receive food rations via JazzCash and CNICs. Pakistanis can seek and verify critical information on a COVID-19 portal under a #JazzCares campaign launched right after the pandemic was declared.

Jazz CEO Aamir Ibrahim said, “Having met the Prime Minister, I’m grateful for the opportunity to do our humble part in the movement to end COVID-19 using all the means we have. The modern weaponry against disasters has changed. Now we need a wide knowledge-base, a documented economy, access to data and high-speed internet access. We cannot permit the economy to pause just because of a physical lockdown anymore.”

The telecom industry as a whole has agreed to work collaboratively and improve digital technology infrastructure in the country to support disaster management; work-from-home human capital, education technology, and digital financial services.

The Jazz CEO gave a live demo to the Prime Minister on how to contribute to the National Pandemic Relief Fund using JazzCash. This gives access to 8M JazzCash customers to contribute to the Relief Fund from the convenience of their homes within seconds.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said, “I appreciate the Jazz initiative of establishing a public SMS voluntary contribution service. This service is now extended to all operators on the contribution SMS code 6677.”

An estimated 50 million are below the poverty line in Pakistan. With the health and economic crisis looming over 2020, this number is estimated to rise considerably amidst the mandated lockdown nationwide. The cheque presented by Jazz to the nation reflects the philosophy of sustainable giving – philanthropy and business continuity that continues over the long-term. Jazz is determined to continue collaborating with the government on its robust Digital Pakistan agenda, health, youth, and relief programs, providing resource support and advisory where required.

Jazz is working with a variety of partners to ensure quality and streamline relief efforts all over the country. Turkish TV dramas have been making their name in Pakistan for quite some time now and people have only been craving for more.

After the whopping popularity in the Middle East, South Africa, and even in South America, action-packed Turkish television series ‘Dirilis: Ertugrul’ has made its way to Pakistan and did not fail to impress the Pakistani audience especially our Prime Minster!

The TV serial is also known as the ‘Turkish Game of Thrones’. The story is based around the 13th century Anatolia and tells the tale preceding the establishment of the Ottoman Empire. It shows the life and the efforts of Ertugrul Gazi, who’s the father of the empire’s first leader.

The show has gained massive popularity after the first season was dubbed in Urdu and released in Pakistan on Hum Sitaray back in 2015.

However, Prime Minister Imran Khan ordered that all five seasons of the drama serial should be dubbed. The show is not just a great watch it also tells a great part of Islamic history.

A huge number of Pakistani audiences love Dirilis: Ertugrul and from the plot to the direction, and the costumes, the high-quality production values, and some very talented actors the drama guarantees to keep the audience hooked to the screen.

Furthermore, the former cricketer Shahid Afridi took Twitter to express his adoration about Ertugrul and wrote, “Watching the Turkish series Diriliş: Ertuğrul I’m just overwhelmed by their achievements and victories that came as a result of their faith in ALLAH and the empire of justice which they were able to establish as a result of. May we be like that once again?”

More recently, according to the PM, Diriliş Ertuğrul “shows the culture of Islam.”

“Usually we copy things from Bollywood that have been copied from Hollywood.”

He added that the drama “also has romance, has historical moments, but all while showing Islamic values… I want our children and youth to know what our culture is.”

Since then, Imran Khan has taken many steps for this drama to be aired in Pakistan. The government has announced that it will air on PTV during Ramadan 2020.

This time it is not for a new tv show or movie but due to a video where he is seen cycling around the K-town streets with his rumoured new beau, model Sadaf Kanwal.

Just recently Alif star, Sadaf commented on Shahroz’s Instagram post where she wished his mother on her birthday saying “Happy birthday mama” the starlet then deleted the comment but netizens definitely saw it and screenshots were taken and further circulated.

It was previously also believed that the growing friendship with Sadaf was the reason for Shahroz and Syra’s divorce. However, Shahroz denied these allegations and claimed that there was no truth to these rumours.

5 Things That Won’t Happen This Ramadan Due To COVID-19

As the novel coronavirus continues to spread globally and people go on to self-isolate in their homes and stockpile groceries, is this the right time to fast? Does fasting inadvertently weaken the immune system? Does fasting cause dehydration? These are a few questions raised by many Muslims and non-Muslims worldwide at such a turbulent phase of human history.

The Muslim holy month of Ramadan is expected to start on April 24 and will go on until the day of Eid al Fitr on approximately May 23.

Muslims across the globe also question how COVID-19 will affect Ramadan. With the pandemic, and following lockdown measures expected to continue for weeks, Muslims are preparing for an inevitable adjustment in practices.

Here’s how COVID 19 will affect Ramadan this year:

1. Prayers in mosques and Itikaf

During Ramadan, special prayers are conducted in mosques after every Isha prayer, which is known as Taraweeh prayers. However, since there’s a temporary suspension on prayers at mosques and places of worship in the country as a precautionary measure amid the global COVID-19 outbreak. People would also be unable to sit for Itikaf since we’re enforced to maintain social distance.

2. Restaurants to be shut

During Ramadan, iftar is the meal used to break the fast while suhoor is eaten before sunrise. During Ramadan, several restaurants and hotels entice customers with their mouth-watering menus and customized deals. This year, however, may be a more somber affair as the restrictions of social distance hinder restaurants to open.

The Ministry of Health and Prevention, along with several local authorities, have emphasized maintaining a social distance between family and friends. Bearing these social norms in mind, it looks like large family gatherings and meeting up at a friend’s house during Ramadan is unlikely until authorities confirm that public gatherings are safe again. So, there won’t be any Sehri/ Iftar plans this year.

4. Hoarding up groceries

In the run-up to Ramadan, several car trips are usually needed to make sure that the kitchen is filled with special ingredients to make traditional meals, as well as to decorate the home with themed decorations. Since the lockdown in Pakistan is 8 am – 5 pm, people will be forced to hoard on groceries that may result in a shortage for other consumers.

5. Less crowd on the streets

Since the government has extended the lockdown, there will be fewer buyers/sellers on the streets. During Ramadan, we witness several small business owners making a sale out of their homemade pakoras, jalebis, samosas, and other iftar items. Although, this year, it’s unlikely that the masses will purchase any food from the streets. Additionally, there will be fewer people outside donating food outside as we practice social distance.

COVID-19: Healthcare Workers In Lahore Go On A Hunger Strike

Young doctors, nurses and paramedical staff, under the banner of Grand Health Alliance (GHA), Punjab, carried a hunger strike camp at Health Secretariat against health authorities’ incompetence and inefficiency to give protective gear to the healthcare professionals laboring at isolation wards for treatment of coronavirus patients in the region.

However, things began to worsen when the protesting medics brought forward a political agenda and demanded the reinstatement of suspended doctors and a boost in salaries.

Young Doctors Association (YDA), Punjab Senior Vice President Dr. Shoaib Niazi published a list of YDA office-bearers suspended during their last agitation movement against Medical Teaching Institutes (Reforms) Act.

The Health Department officials announced that the young doctors had requested protective kits for medics in the beginning, but then they began making other demands encompassing restoration of their suspended colleagues, and additional incentives for all doctors.

Moreover, the officials told, they demanded to shift of doctors, who had tested positive for coronavirus, to five-star hotel rooms after converting them into quarantines.

The Health Department officials added that it was not time for the healthcare providers to do politics on the pandemic when the government and health machinery were combatting against the common enemy of coronavirus.

As the young doctors, nurses and paramedical staff started agitating aggressively under the leadership of GHA Chairman and YDA President Dr. Salman Haseeb and Paramedical Staff Association (PSA) Punjab Chairman Arshad Butt, the health authorities called police for maintaining peace at the secretariat.

The special secretary health said that young doctors, nurses and paramedical staff had inhabited the whole health secretariat. “We called police for our protection, not for arrests,” he added.

Meanwhile, the police thrashed the doctors and locked them in the health secretariat. The doctors also called their colleagues from the city hospitals to help them.

A huge amount of doctors, nurses, and paramedics staged a protest demonstration outside the secretariat.

The young doctors claimed that the police failed to end their hunger strike camp as protesters reorganized themselves.

They pledged that they would proceed to give full services to all patients in general and coronavirus wards in hospitals, but also vowed to carry on their protest until their demands were fulfilled.

People are feeling stressed and imprisoned in their homes. Yes, it is a very difficult situation to handle as we are cut off from our normal life which ironically was so abnormal.

But we cannot mourn and waste all this time. In other words, we must not forget the other side of the picture. We know everything happens for a reason and that could be anything. You can still choose to think the other way round. You are given a chance to reflect on yourself, to turn inward and connect all the broken threads. So, here are some notions that you should consider to ward off your quarantine blues.

1. Imbibe the quarantine hues positively

Let these moments polish you and do something that your future self will thank you for. As the famous writer, Paulo Coelho said, “Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path”. Consequently, you need to be optimistic and be hopeful about what’s happening around you. You need to listen deeply to the rhythms of nature, as everyone needs a break, so does nature.

Let us align ourselves with nature and do things that we love. Earth is in its healing process so its time for us to heal too. I think it’s been long that you have given time to yourself so go for it first. It’s time to learn and unlearn, to forgive yourself and forgive others, and to realize that all the worldly things are temporary. 2. Create Yourself

You do not have to be a loon and waste this golden opportunity of creating yourself. Do something that you are passionate about and something that you have not done because of your previously hectic routine. Pull yourself together and explore something new. Do not fear what a gem you can be. Let the artist come out behind the curtains. Add some colors to otherwise ponderous life. 4. Maintain a Healthy Routine

Besides that maintain your sleep routine which means try to sleep and get up each day at the same timings. Good sleep ensures good health, physically and mentally. Also, do some exercise to keep your body fit and relaxed. If you follow one such routine, it will help you balance your routine and will free you from extraneous things. Stay calm and healthy.

5. Solitude

The state in which you are happy within yourself not needing anyone to validate your existence. You must not negate the perks of solitude albeit it’s the best way to restore peace in your life. Before this quarantine, we were lost in the bustling life and almost forgot ourselves. KIA Sportage 2020 is Ready for Pakistan’s Automotive Sector!

April 17th, 2020: KIA Motors is all set to officially launch its 2020 edition of the Sportage SUV.

Reportedly,  KIA has officially begun its operations within Pakistan, and owners have the option of getting some additional features installed from KIA service centers.

Earlier, KIA Lucky Motors had officially unveiled and launched the highly anticipated KIA Sportage sport utility vehicle (SUV) with a 2,000cc engine.

Cars in Pakistan have engines starting from 600cc going up to 2,700cc. KIA Lucky Motors CEO Asif Rizvi, while speaking at the press conference shared:

Kia Sportage’s Booking Starts from Today in Pakistan!

June 30th, 2019: Kia Lucky Motors Pakistan Limited (KLM) has successfully completed the commissioning of equipment and pilot production and recently commenced CKD (Completely Knocked Down) operations at its plant located at Port Qasim, Karachi.

KLM is one of the eight new entrants into the Pakistan automobile industry.

KLM is a joint venture between the Lucky Group and South Korea’s Kia Motors. According to the details, the total project cost of the company amounts to Rs. 19.5 billion.

KLM has the potential to produce 50,000 vehicles per annum on a double shift basis.

“The booking of ‘Sportage’ an SUV being KLM’s first model will start from 30th June 2019 and delivery thereof will start from the first week of August 2019,” the notification said.

The notification also stated that the company would start the booking of Kia Picanto in August and the delivery would commence from October 2019.

“The booking of ‘PICANTO’ hatchback being KLM’s second model is expected to start in August 2019 and delivery thereof from October 2019.”

Kia Lucky Motors Pakistan Ltd had applied for Greenfield status on March 13, 2017, which was awarded on June 19, 2017. The planned investment in the project is $ 190 million.

Lucky’s script at the bourse closed at Rs. 380.47, up by 7.30 or +1.96% with a turnover of 606,500 shares on Friday.

Earlier, the team of ‘Ishrat Made In China’ was stranded in Thailand and couldn’t make it back to Pakistan before the lockdown was announced. However, the team was finally able to come back to their homeland on the 14th of April. But even when they’re back to Pakistan, they haven’t been able to go back to their home despite being tested clear of coronavirus.

Sanam Saeed and Shamoon Abbasi were also among the team members who made it back to Pakistan, however, they landed in Islamabad and not Karachi.

Here’s what Sanam had shared

Toyota Pakistan is Offering Refunds Without Penalties or Deductions

April 17th, 2020: Toyota Pakistan has taken out an official statement on its official social media.

According to the notice, the brand talks about how the entire world is battling against the novel coronavirus and how the term “safety” has become of high importance.

Following the orders of the government, Toyota closed down its factories to respect the lockdown to keep its employees and those around them safe.

Moreover, due to the international economic conditions and fluctuation of the FOREX index, they had to regretfully increase the prices on their vehicles and products.

The notice further reads:

The new prices will not affect any full payments made however if a customer requires a refund, they may approach our customer assistance center (cac) which will process a complete refund without any penalties or refunds.

April 15th, 2020: Toyota Pakistan a.k.a Indus Motor Company has increased its prices for its vehicles. The variants that have been impacted with this decision are the Toyota Yaris, Toyota Corolla, and IMV variants.

The reason the manufacturer has given behind the surge in prices is the surge of the Dollar against the Rupee. Furthermore, there was an increase in the CKD cost and the cost of local parts.

IMC vendors have also witnessed an increase in prices, hence the automotive giant had to hike its prices from Rs 100,000 to 500,000 depending on the variant.

According to the reports, the newly launched Yaris’ base variant, 1.3L GLI MT, has increased by PKR 120,000, meaning the ex-factory price of the base model is now PKR 2,469,000.

Moreover, the top-of-the-line variant’s price has increased by PKR 150,000. A new 1.5L ATIV X CVT now costs PKR 2,959,000. The 1.6L Toyota Corolla has witnessed a hike of PKR 110,000 and now stands at PKR 3,159,000. Whereas the Corolla Altis Grande CVT has increased by PKR 200,000, and now stands at PKR 3,899,000.

The price of the Toyota Hilux Revo has increased by PHR 300,000. Revo V AT is now at PKR 6,549,000 while the base model, Revo G MT now costs PKR 5,899,000. The Toyota Fortuner has also seen an increase in value by PKR 400,000 for base variants and PKR 500,000 for top-end variants.

Major brands are working across the world in various ways to help the society amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Coca-Cola announced a collaboration with a star-studded lineup of top musicians, actors, artists and entertainers.

The stars will unite virtually this weekend for “One World: Together At Home”, it is being organised by Coca-Cola in collaboration with Global Citizen and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to support and celebrate the nurses, doctors and other health care workers in this fight against COVID-19.

The one of a kind virtual concert will be televised and broadcasted on various networks and at the same time live-streamed on digital platforms such as Instagram on Saturday, April 18th at 8 pm ET.

UAE to Extend Visas for Pakistani Nationals Amid Coronavirus Crisis

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced a visa extension for Pakistani nationals amidst the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Reportedly, the UAE has agreed to the extension along with other measures that were discussed between the UAE minister on human resource and PM’s aide on Overseas Pakistanis Zulfi Bukhari on Thursday.

As a conclusion, the UAE ministry announced to assist Pakistani nationals in all possible ways and provide legal protection to those who are willing to stay.

Reportedly, both the ministers discussed about Pakistanis who have now lost their jobs due to the pandemic. They will be given full salaries but it was also discussed that virtual jobs will be provided to Pakistani employees on a priority basis.

April 10th, 2020: The Pakistani Consul General in Dubai announced that 10,000 Pakistanis in the UAE have now been rendered jobless due to coronavirus.

Overall, around 35,000 Pakistanis are registered with the consulate in Dubai who are looking to come back home according to Consul General Ahmed Amjad Ali.

The official shared that preparations are underway to bring the stranded individuals back home.

“Tourists, unemployed and the elderly will be given preference,” he said. He added that screening measures have also been completed for those who are returning from Dubai airport.

On the other hand, Dubai authorities are waiting for approval for Pakistan’s government to operate flights for those who want to return home.

Earlier, Dubai’s Gulf News earlier reported that hundreds of Pakistanis had gathered outside the consulate on Sunday to register to return home.
