Is WhatsApp Secretly Recording People While They’re Asleep?

WhatsApp

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world, with over 2 billion users. However, recent claims suggest that the app may be secretly recording users while they’re asleep. These claims have caused concern among users and have led to some people questioning the trustworthiness of the app. But is there any truth to these claims?

According to a recent article in the Daily Mail, some users have reported that WhatsApp is secretly recording them while they’re asleep. The article claims that users have noticed that their phone’s microphone is activated during the night, even when they’re not using the app.

Whatsapp defends itself

However, WhatsApp has denied these claims. In a tweet, the company stated that it “does not listen to your personal conversations as they are end-to-end encrypted.”

Despite WhatsApp’s denial, some users are still concerned that the app may be recording them without their knowledge. This has led to speculation that the app is using users’ microphones to listen in on their conversations and gather data about them.

However, cybersecurity experts have stated that it’s highly unlikely that WhatsApp is secretly recording users. End-to-end encryption means that all conversations on the app are encrypted and cannot be accessed by anyone, including WhatsApp itself. Therefore, it’s not possible for the app to record conversations without users’ knowledge.

Mark Zuckerberg privacy policy highlighted again

Furthermore, it’s important to note that WhatsApp is owned by Facebook, which has come under scrutiny in the past for its data privacy policies. However, WhatsApp operates independently from Facebook and has a strong commitment to user privacy.

In fact, WhatsApp is one of the few messaging apps that uses end-to-end encryption, which means that conversations can only be accessed by the sender and receiver. This makes it difficult for anyone to intercept or record conversations on the app.

Despite the reassurances from WhatsApp and cybersecurity experts, some users may still feel uneasy about using the app. If you’re one of these users, there are steps you can take to protect your privacy.

Firstly, ensure that your phone’s microphone and camera permissions are turned off for WhatsApp. This means that the app won’t be able to access your microphone or camera without your permission.

Secondly, be cautious about what you share on the app. Don’t share personal information or sensitive data, as this could be intercepted by third parties.

Finally, if you’re still concerned about your privacy, consider using an alternative messaging app that prioritizes privacy. There are several apps available that use end-to-end encryption and have a strong commitment to user privacy.

There is no evidence to suggest that WhatsApp is secretly recording users while they’re asleep. The app uses end-to-end encryption, which means that conversations are encrypted and cannot be accessed by anyone, including WhatsApp itself. While it’s important to be cautious about your privacy when using any app, there is no need to be overly concerned about using WhatsApp.

Tech Meets Treats: You Won’t Believe This AI-Generated KitKat Ad

KitKat

There’s nothing quite like a KitKat bar, period. Kit Kat is probably the elitist chocolate out there in the world. It gives you a much-needed break, does it not? See what I did there?  Anyways, KitKat is quite popular, and maybe it is because of its crispy wafers to its creamy chocolatey goodness but I think it’s not just the taste, it’s the iconic ads that have become ingrained in popular culture.

With its catchy slogan “Have a break. Have a Kit Kat,” the brand has created some of the most memorable and humorous commercials of all time. But this time, the ad makers have also taken a break.

Image Source: Branding in Asia Magazine

Now we all are already aware of how useful AI is. It can have voices, faces, bodies, etc. It can also make films, songs, 3D animations, and 3D “very real life looking” characters but no one thought of using it for their new AD campaigns until Kit Kat. The marketing/promotion/ creative team might’ve just been in the mood to take a break or they might’ve just been brilliant at what they do. Because this AI-generated ad is making rounds on social media.

The snack brand recently launched an advertising campaign that ridicules, almost funnily mocks the notion that artificial intelligence could potentially take over creative jobs. And let’s be honest, it might come true! To convey the message, the brand incorporated its well-known slogan “Have a break” and gave its own creative team some time off, resulting in disastrous outcomes. Here have a look.

So, the brilliant minds at Wunderman Thompson Australia decided to give AI a shot at creating some KitKat ads. They might’ve wondered why not see what happens when they ask a robot to talk like a cool Gen Z? Well, let’s just say the AI may have missed the mark a bit. The resulting ads are so hilariously bad that you might feel a little bad for the little machines. There are six-fingered hands, KitKat logos that look like they’ve been through a meat grinder, and some seriously robotic-sounding text. but it was definitely worth the shot!

What do you think about this AI Kit Kat ad? Let us know in the comments below.

Google has introduced a much-needed feature for its Photos app that will allow users to enhance their photos automatically. This feature is being called Enhanced Google Photos, and it’s available for both Android and iOS devices.

What does the new update do?

The Enhanced Google Photos feature will automatically adjust brightness, contrast, and color in your photos. It will also reduce noise and sharpen the image. This is all done automatically, so you don’t have to do anything. All you have to do is take your photos and let Google do the rest.

This new feature is particularly useful for those who take a lot of photos on their smartphones. It can be difficult to get the perfect shot, especially when you’re in a hurry. With Enhanced Google Photos, you can take a photo quickly and still get a great result.

Another benefit of this feature is that it can help you save time. Instead of spending hours editing your photos, you can let Google do it for you. This means you can spend more time doing the things you love, like taking more photos.

Enhanced Google Photos is also great for those who are not particularly skilled at photo editing. If you don’t have the time or knowledge to edit your photos, this feature can help you get the best possible result without any effort on your part.

One of the best things about Enhanced Google Photos is that it’s free. There’s no need to pay for expensive photo editing software when you can get the same results for free. This makes it an ideal option for those who are on a tight budget.

How to use it?

To use Enhanced Google Photos, all you have to do is update your Google Photos app. Once you’ve done this, you can start taking photos as usual. Google will automatically enhance your photos as soon as you take them.

Of course, there are some limitations to this feature. It’s not going to be able to fix every single photo you take. However, it should be able to improve the majority of your photos.

Additionally, some users may prefer to edit their photos manually. If you’re one of these people, you can still use the traditional editing tools available in the Google Photos app.

Enhanced Google Photos is a much-needed feature for smartphone photographers. It’s quick, easy, and free, making it an ideal option for anyone who takes a lot of photos on their smartphone. If you haven’t already updated your Google Photos app, now is the time to do so. You won’t regret it!

How Simple Measures Could Save One Million Babies A Year

How Simple Measures Could Save One Million Babies A Year

Around the world, health care isn’t readily available to pregnant women. In low-income countries, premature babies without food or access to incubators are dying. While access to resources is crucial in maintaining the health of the infant and mother, in cases when these resources are not accessible, surviving becomes a task leading to inevitable deaths. Ensuring that babies receive proper care, nutrition, and medical attention can significantly improve their chances of survival.

The rising incidence of babies with premature or stillbirth has also raised alarm. According to researchers 160 million live births from 2000 to 2020 to work out how often babies are born “too soon and too small.” Ever since then, they were classified under the new term called “small vulnerable newborns.”

“Quite shockingly, we found that this is much more common once you start to think about it in a more nuanced way.”

How Babies Can Be Saved With Care?

Ensuring that the mother receives proper prenatal care is also crucial to a baby’s survival. Regular visits to the doctor and proper nutrition can help prevent many complications that can arise during pregnancy. Meanwhile, babies can be saved by ensuring that they are delivered safely. Proper delivery techniques can reduce the risk of complications that can lead to death.

According to a series of publications published in The Lancet journal, eight tried-and-true and simple treatments could avoid more than 565,000 stillbirths in these nations.

In addition to delivering micronutrients, protein, and energy supplements, low-dose aspirin, progesterone, and information on the negative effects of smoking, the measures also included malaria, syphilis, and bacteria in urine treatments.

Meanwhile, more than 475,000 newborn newborns may be saved if pregnant women were given access to steroids and doctors delayed clamping the umbilical cord, according to the study.

A Fresh Look: Nickelodeon’s New Brand Identity Revealed

nickelodeon

Nickelodeon is bringing back the Splat logo, which was an iconic component of The First Kids’ Network in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, as part of its first brand revamps in 14 years. The network unveiled its new marketing strategy and design on Monday, paying homage to Nick’s outrageous past and featuring iconic Nick characters and the Splat emblem “but with a modern feel for today’s kids and families.”

“That was an exciting unlock for us because it meant while we can continue to be the best and the mess of being a kid, we can use that to bring kids and families closer together, which they are longing for in this time,” Said Sabrina Caluori, EVP of global kids and family marketing at Nickelodeon and Paramount.

“It’s the first brand I ever had any passion for as a kid, and now I’m a mom of three kids who are in the demo. It’s been really exciting for me to be able to look at the brand and look at everything that we’re doing through the eyes of my kids while also ensuring that everything that we’re doing still spoke to the Nick kid inside me.”

Could iPhone 15 Be Making A Major Design Mistake?

iphone 15
source: Toms Guide

The iPhone 15 is one of the most anticipated smartphone releases of the year. With rumors swirling about its features and design, many people are eagerly anticipating its arrival. However, recent reports suggest that the iPhone 15 may be making a major design mistake that could impact its functionality and user experience.

iPhone 15 Pro: Rumors, design, colors
Source: AppleInsider

The potential design change that is causing concern among tech enthusiasts is the removal of the charging port. According to some reports, Apple may be planning to introduce a completely portless iPhone, meaning that users would have to rely on wireless charging exclusively.

Cost of going portless

While wireless charging has become more prevalent in recent years, it is still not as reliable or convenient as a physical charging port. It requires users to have a charging pad or mat, and it can take longer to charge a device wirelessly than it does using a charging cable. Additionally, wireless charging can be less efficient, leading to slower charging speeds and a decrease in battery life over time.

Another concern with a portless iPhone is that it could make it more difficult to transfer data between devices. Without a physical port, users would have to rely on cloud services or other wireless transfer methods, which can be slower and less secure than a direct cable connection.

The potential benefits of a portless iPhone are not immediately clear. While it could make the device more waterproof and resistant to dust and debris, there are already many waterproof and dust-resistant smartphones on the market that still have charging ports.

Apple’s marketing strategy

Some analysts have speculated that a portless iPhone could be part of Apple’s strategy to push users towards its AirPods and other wireless accessories. However, this could backfire if users are hesitant to invest in expensive wireless accessories or are frustrated by the limitations of wireless charging.

Overall, the decision to remove the charging port from the iPhone 15 is a risky one. While it could lead to a sleeker design and improved durability, it could also lead to frustration and inconvenience for users. Apple should carefully consider the pros and cons of this design change before implementing it.

If Apple does decide to go ahead with a portless iPhone, it will be interesting to see how consumers react. Will they embrace the change, or will they push back against it? Only time will tell.

The iPhone 15’s potential design change could be a major mistake. While a portless iPhone may look more sleek and modern, it could also make charging and data transfer more difficult and less reliable. Apple should consider the potential drawbacks of this change before implementing it, and should be prepared to address any concerns that users may have. Ultimately, the success of the iPhone 15 will depend on how well it balances innovation with practicality and user experience.

The Science Behind Hyundai’s e-Corner ‘Crab Driving’

Hyundai
Source: Autoblog

Hyundai has been making waves in the automotive industry with its innovative new technology, e-Corner Crab Driving. This feature allows vehicles to move sideways, or “crab,” which makes parallel parking a breeze. But how does it work? Let’s take a closer look at the science behind this exciting new technology.

First, it’s important to understand how traditional four-wheel drive vehicles work. In these vehicles, power is sent to the wheels through the drivetrain, which consists of the engine, transmission, driveshaft, and axles. When you turn the steering wheel, the front wheels turn and the vehicle moves in the direction of the turn.

However, in e-Corner Crab Driving, each wheel is powered by its own electric motor, which means that each wheel can be controlled independently. This allows the vehicle to move in any direction, including sideways.

Does the vehicle maintain stability while moving sideways?

The answer lies in the vehicle’s suspension system. The e-Corner Crab Driving technology includes an electronic active suspension system that can adjust the height and stiffness of each wheel independently. This allows the vehicle to maintain stability and balance even while moving sideways.

WATCH: Hyundai's e-Corner 'crab driving' takes parallel parking to whole new level - Tech - SAMAA

The suspension system works by using sensors to detect the position and movement of the vehicle. This information is then sent to a central computer, which calculates the optimal height and stiffness settings for each wheel. The computer sends these settings to the suspension system, which adjusts the height and stiffness of each wheel in real-time.

Transforming the modern automobile industry

In addition to making parallel parking easier, e-Corner Crab Driving has other potential applications as well. For example, it could be used in narrow urban streets where vehicles need to maneuver around obstacles. It could also be useful in tight spaces such as parking garages or loading docks.

Source; Autoblog

The technology is also environmentally friendly, as it uses electric motors rather than traditional combustion engines. This means that e-Corner Crab Driving vehicles produce zero emissions, making them a great choice for eco-conscious consumers.

E-Corner Crab Driving is an exciting new technology that has the potential to revolutionize the way we think about vehicle mobility. By allowing vehicles to move sideways, it makes parallel parking and maneuvering in tight spaces much easier. The technology is made possible by independent electric motors for each wheel and an electronic active suspension system that maintains stability and balance.

This innovation also has potential applications in urban environments and is environmentally friendly due to its use of electric motors. As Hyundai continues to push the boundaries of automotive technology, we can expect to see more exciting developments like e-Corner Crab Driving in the years to come.

Commuters Stranded Due To Absence Of People’s Bus Service Drivers

Karachi has been facing issues with its public transportation system for a long time now. But the absence of drivers for the recently launched People’s Bus Service is now causing problems for commuters on multiple routes. While the bus service was initially introduced to provide convenience to citizens, but the everyday absence of drivers has become annoying and frustrating.

Sources claim that the Sindh government has also decreased the number of buses from 30 to 20, further adding to the commuters’ problems. The public bus service users have also complained about delays on various routes of the People’s Bus Service.

Affected Routes

One of the routes affected by the reduced number of buses is the R-1 route from Malir Model Colony to DHA Karachi, where the reduction of ten buses has led to longer wait times for commuters. The commuters have been left stranded on multiple occasions due to the unavailability of drivers.

In response to the situation, the charge of the Bus Service for the R1 route stated that the time from 7 am to 10 am is being recorded as peak time, and efforts are being made to ensure that drivers arrive at their designated times.

This situation highlights the need for better management of the public transportation system in Karachi to avoid inconveniencing the citizens who depend on it. The authorities must address the issues of driver absences and reduced bus services to ensure the smooth running of the People’s Bus Service and other public transportation services in the city.

Congo Virus Proving To Be Fatal: Signs To Look Out For

Congo virus is a highly-infectious disease that is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks or contact with the blood and body fluids of infected animals, particularly livestock such as goats and cattle. With Eid-ul-Adha right around the corner, all cities of Karachi are at a high risk of Congo virus cases.

The virus is mainly prevalent in many African countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it was first identified in 1956. But now it might be the next global pandemic.

Congo Virus In Karachi

Karachi has now unfortunately discovered its first case of Congo Virus. On Monday, a man aged 28, who was identified as Mohammad Adil and worked as a meat seller in Liaquatabad, passed away while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Karachi. He was confirmed as the first case of Congo virus this year.

Similarly, this was the fourth death from the virus in the last 10 days. On May 2, a 20-year-old woman in Quetta also passed away due to the Congo virus.

How Does It Spread?

Congo virus is primarily spread through the bite of infected ticks, particularly the Hyalomma tick species. Here’s what they look like.

These ticks are commonly found on domesticated and wild animals, such as goats, sheep, cows, and camels. So basically, this Eid ul Adha, everyone is on high alert when taking care of their sacrificial animals. Humans can also get the virus by coming into contact with the blood, body fluids, or tissues of infected animals.

For example, people who work with animals or in slaughterhouses are at higher risk of contracting the virus. However, human-to-human transmission is rare and only occurs through close contact with infected bodily fluids.

Symptoms

The initial symptoms include;

  • fever
  • headache
  • muscle pain
  • weakness

As the disease progresses, patients may experience more severe symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bleeding from the mouth, nose, and other organs. In some cases, patients may also develop jaundice, confusion, and seizures.

Severe cases can lead to hemorrhagic fever, which is characterized by internal bleeding and can be life-threatening. It is important to seek medical attention if you experience any symptoms of the Congo virus, especially if you have been exposed to ticks or infected animals.

Treatments

Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment or vaccine for the Congo virus, but medical care can help manage symptoms and improve survival chances. Treatment includes hospitalization and supportive care, such as intravenous fluids, pain relievers, and blood transfusions if necessary. To prevent the

Congo virus, wear protective clothing, use tick repellents, and avoid contact with infected individuals and animals. At home, you can safely dispose of materials contaminated with blood or bodily fluids to prevent the spread of the virus.

Google’s Revolutionary Move Towards Password-Free Security

Forgetting passwords is so bad but do you know what’s worse than trying to remember your password? Trying to come up with a new one that meets the complicated requirements! You need at least eight characters, a mix of upper and lowercase letters, a number, a symbol, a hieroglyphic, and a secret ingredient that only Google knows. And then, just when you think you’ve created the perfect password, Google tells you it’s too similar to your previous ones. Oh my god!

Google, the world’s leading tech giant, has introduced passkeys as a new way of signing in to apps and websites, marking a significant step towards a future without passwords. The passkeys can be used across Google Accounts on all major platforms, and according to Google, they will provide a secure and more convenient option for signing in compared to traditional passwords, which can be frustrating to remember and risky if stolen. Google hopes that passkeys will eventually eliminate the need for passwords altogether.

What Are Passkeys?

Passkeys are like VIP pass to apps and websites. So you don’t need to rely on easy-to-guess words like “password123” or use your pet’s name and birthday anymore. With passkeys, you can unlock your apps and sites with a fingerprint, face scan, or PIN code, just like how you unlock your phone.

Plus, passkeys protect you from online attacks like phishing and are way more secure than one-time codes sent via SMS. If you want a password-free future, try out passkeys as an option for your Google Account since it’s now available.

You can now try them out at g.co/passkeys. Setting it up is really easy and Google guides you through the whole way. However, the change to passkeys will obviously take time. That’s why passwords and 2SV will still be working for Google Accounts.

When will you be changing your passwords? Let us know in the comments below.

Emirates Opens Check-In ‘Store’ For Passengers’ Convenience

Emirates, the best airline in the world, is raising the bar for passenger comfort. To eliminate the need for passengers to travel to the airport, the airline has created a location in the city where they can check in and drop off their luggage.

The store, which opened on 27 April in Dubai, is situated in the city’s financial area, around 15 minutes by car from the airport and 30 minutes by public transportation.

According to a recent news release, this is just another check-in option that airlines are testing to shorten the amount of time travelers must spend at the airport to improve customer satisfaction and lessen crowding.

“People can avoid busy periods at the airport and minimize queuing,” said Adel al Redha, Emirates’ chief operating officer, in a recent press release.

“We are the first airline globally that has introduced or plans to introduce portable check-in robotics. A robot that can complete all your check-in processes, including issuing a boarding card that will be sent to your registered number or email, and facial recognition by scanning your passport,” he added.

To reduce stress at the airport, travelers can turn in their luggage between four and 24 hours before their trip. From 8 am to 10 pm every day, passengers can check in at any time using self-check-in kiosks, and desks with Emirates agents or Sara, the world’s first check-in robot assistant.

After production reaches commercial size, the airline will roll out domestically produced check-in robots within the next two months. With plans to deploy more than 200 units over the next two years.

BMW Announces A Wake-Up Call You Can’t Ignore!

Do you own an old model of BMW? Then this news is for you. BMW has now issued a warning to all owners of approximately 90,000 older vehicles in the United States. BMW urges them not to drive their cars because there is a growing threat that the airbags may explode during a collision. The warning message applies to vehicles from the 2000 through 2006 model years, which had been previously recalled to replace faulty airbag inflators produced by Takata.

What Can Cause The Airbags Explosion?

Takata used volatile ammonium nitrate to inflate airbags during an accident. However, over time, the chemical can break down when exposed to heat and humidity, which can cause the metal canister to burst and hurl shrapnel, injuring or killing passengers and drivers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises drivers to park their vehicles and contact BMW for further details. Repairs, as well as mobile repair and free towing, are available to owners at no cost. “These vehicles are 17 to 22 years old, and the risk to vehicle occupants is dire,” the agency said on Thursday. “These are some of the oldest Takata airbags under recall and have an extremely high probability of failure during a crash.”

NHTSA tells BMW owners that if the inflators rupture, metal debris could be hurled toward the driver’s face, resulting in fatal or life-altering injuries. Since 2009, Takata’s exploding airbags have killed at least 33 people worldwide, including 24 in the United States. While most of the fatalities and about 400 injuries occurred in the United States, some happened in Malaysia and Australia. The recall includes BMW’s 2000 through 2006 3 Series, 2000 through 2003 5 Series, and 2000 through 2004 X5, all of which have driver’s front airbag inflators produced by Takata.

How To Make Sure You Are Safe?

If you are a BMW owner, you can visit BMW’s website to see if your vehicle is affected or contact BMW customer relations.

Owners of older Honda, Ford, and Stellantis vehicles with Takata inflators have also been previously warned not to drive their cars.

“These inflators are two decades old now, and they pose a 50% chance of rupturing in even a minor crash,” stated NHTSA Acting Administrator Ann Carlson.“Don’t take a chance with your life or the life of someone you love – schedule your free repair today before it’s too late.”

From Jeff Bezos to Elon Musk, the AI artist’s renderings of these billionaires are impressive. And who knows, maybe seeing these virtual fitness makeovers will inspire these billionaires to hit the gym and actually start looking like that.

Jack Ma-Cofounder Alibaba Group

How Did He Do It?

Indian AI art enthusiast, Sk Md Abu Sahid,  has been doing this sort of AI magic on his Instagram for quite some time now. His work on global millionaires in different ways has gained popularity. This time he shared eight pictures that show what billionaires would look like if they were gym enthusiasts. The post features Mukesh Ambani, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Ratan Tata, and other billionaires.

He used Midjourney, an artificial intelligence program, to create these illusions. Here have a look at his Instagram post showing different billionaires as bodybuilders.

The post soon started to gain popularity and people started loving it. Some even pointed out a few AI hints like Elon Musk wearing two watches. But despite all of that, it is absolutely crazy to think of how AI can alter literally anyone’s appearance and now even voices! To think of the endless possibilities this creates is even crazier.

Could this just stay as something cool? or could this soon turn into a threat? Well, that’s a discussion for another time.

Unprecedented Global Study Calls On Organizations To Enhance Risk Culture

Dated May 5, 2023, in Lahore, the need for effective risk management is obvious given that corporate failures have made headlines this year. This is the reason the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), The Association of Insurance and Risk Managers (Airmic), and the Professional Risk Managers’ International Association (PRMIA) worked together on a recent study to assess how risk and financial leaders are handling risk culture and how well they comprehend its impact on the organization’s overall strategy.

The study is based on a global online poll that was supplemented by a variety of interactive interactions with the members of the three professional bodies. It gathered opinions from thousands of risk and financial professionals around the world. Risk Culture: Building Resilience and Seizing Opportunities, a new report, details the conclusions.

While ‘box ticking’ is common, this groundbreaking study discovered that risk culture is becoming more popular as a means of coping with disjointed organizational cultures and difficult-to-detect risk breadth.

Regulation, compliance, and risk were the top risks for risk and finance professionals in all areas, followed by technology, data, cybersecurity, and economic inflation and recession.

According to results specific to each industry, respondents in the financial services sector were more likely to name “technology, data, and cybersecurity” and “regulatory, compliance, and legal” as their two top risk priorities, while respondents in the corporate sector ranked “logistics and supply chain” issues as one of their top three risk concerns. Interestingly, the corporate sector ranked “misconduct, fraud, and reputational damage” lower than any other despite an increase in corporate fraud cases.

Some of the overarching concerns coming out of the report are that risk conversations continue to happen in a vacuum at the top of organizations, and that engagement not only between boards and senior management – but also across functions and roles – needs significant improvement.

“Recent corporate collapses remind us of how inadequate and siloed risk governance can be, regardless of what is said in their financial statements,” said Rachael Johnson, head of risk management and corporate governance at ACCA and author of the report. “As our research shows, it is not only the regulators who are asking questions. In today’s highly interconnected, digital world, even a weak risk culture is better than none.”

“In an increasingly high velocity, complex and connected world, tensions can be created between managing performance, innovation, controls, and assurance.”

Julia Graham, CEO of Airmic, a partner said: “This report addresses how risk culture can contribute towards managing these tensions as part of good governance and concludes that managing risk dynamically and building resilience collaboratively are changing risk culture for the better.”

“Recent events, such as FTX and Silicon Valley Bank, show us that risk culture, more than ever, needs to be front and center for risk and accounting professionals,” said Justin McCarthy, CEO of PRMIA. “This report shows how we need to help our respective members work and learn together more.”

Over 2,000 risk and financial specialists from around the world contributed their insights to the research. 1,823 unique replies were submitted to the online survey in October 2022 by risk and financial professionals from various businesses throughout the world. These people have backgrounds in accounting to a large extent (93% are ACCA members). More qualitative information was added as a result of additional forums, roundtables, and one-on-one interviews with more ACCA members.

Risk Culture Conversations, a supplement to the study, delves into the two open-ended survey questions as well as these discussions and feedback from our online community pop-up platform, which happened in November 2022.

To complement the findings, the report also includes ten calls to action.

  1. Empower risk leaders to drive risk culture and influence behaviors.
  2. Resist the danger of tunnel vision when faced with a multitude of risks.
  3. Understand the behaviors driving both good and bad outcomes.
  4. Don’t mistake a ‘tick the box’ compliance approach as true, value-added risk management.
  5. Consider how you define the role of accountants in risk culture, particularly in reconciling ethics with profits.
  6. Define risk appetite clearly and communicate its purpose to help guide behavior and inform better decision-making.
  7. Eliminate the fear factor by creating a ‘hands up’ culture through visibility and leading by example.
  8. Measure and incentivize the risk culture you want by ensuring ‘everyone owns it’.
  9. Promote good governance through role clarity and knowing who is responsible and accountable for what.
  10. Coordinate multi-stakeholder engagement with regulators leading to more positive, pro-society outcomes.

ACCA will publish additional research on risk culture by industry throughout 2023.
