The Ministry of Information Technology has introduced the Beep Pakistan communication app, aiming to enhance secure communication among government employees across 41 federal ministries and departments. This app will later become available to the general public. So is this new Whatsapp-style texting app actually an app with good potential or is it just another way of accessing people’s private information and details?
Features
Designed as an alternative to social media platforms like WhatsApp, the Beep Pakistan app offers features such as audio and video calling, video conferencing, and secure document transfer. Initially accessible to federal authorities, the app’s availability will extend to provincial levels in its second phase, marking Pakistan’s first homegrown social media application.
The government asserts that the app’s secure server location within Pakistan enhances its security compared to other alternatives. The source code will also be hosted in Pakistan. The app’s connectivity has been enabled through 83 projects with an investment of Rs. 79 billion.
The Launch
During the launch event attended by senior IT officials, including Federal Minister for IT and Telecom, Syed Amin Ul Haque, it was emphasized that the app’s introduction aims to prevent audio and video leaks. Additionally, over the past four years, three new incubation centers have been established. Syed Amin Ul Haque further highlighted, “Today, 33 companies are manufacturing smartphones in Pakistan. World’s major companies are also manufacturing mobile phones in Pakistan. In 2020, IT exports were only $1 billion. Today, IT exports have reached $2.6 billion. Our aspiration is to take IT exports up to $15 billion.” He also noted significant accomplishments such as the Cyber Security Policy and Data Protection Bill milestones.
