Another Condom Ad in Pakistan Takes Social Media by Storm

Josh, a contraceptive brand has previously rolled out a series of commercials in Pakistan featuring Mathira to address the need to use contraceptives.

This time around, the condom manufacturers took a unique, humour based approach using the tagline ‘Josh Laga K’!

In Pakistan, contraceptive ads are not commonly aired due to cultural values and beliefs. The topic of intimacy and protection has always been considered taboo, which is why there is a need to raise awareness on sex education.

Josh’s new campaign has tackled this conservative topic in a subtle and effective way. Through different instances, the TVC highlights the fact that the brand is recognized and popular with individuals of different age groups and social strata who are aware of it.

Condom advertisements have usually been the center of numerous controversies with story lines based on erotic undertones as commonly seen in ads from other countries.

The ad many a time fails to portray the actual message and the intended communication aimed at sex education ends up being mocked thereby failing to spread awareness about the product and its need in society.

The communication used in the condom advertisement by Josh shows how easy it is to express your feelings. Additionally, the humor based approach makes the audience comfortable with the idea of buying condoms without hesitation, nervousness or the use of vulgarity.

In a country where birth control, sex education, and awareness are sensitive and taboo topics, Josh makes use of comedy to appeal to the audience who can relate to the humor and situations.

With its clever use of language adapted to suit our culture, the condom brand has added that “desi touch’ making it light-hearted whilst effectively communicating the message.

The Afreen Afreen singer Momina Mustehsan recently teamed up with a Bollywood singer Arjun Kanungo for their song titled Aaya Na Tu that has been making waves on social media.

It is not just us who absolutely loved it but the Bollywood megastar Salman Khan has also given a shoutout to the song.

The actor took to his Twitter account to share the link of the song with the caption:

Check this song by Arjun Kanungo called ‘Aaya na tu’. Best of Luck.

Soon after he shared the song, Momina Mustehsan could not wait and thanked him for the sweet gesture.

She tweeted:

Thank you so much for sharing the song! ☺ you’re my moms absolute favorite!

Momina couldn’t have asked for better promotion for her song!

But the Dabangg actor did not mention Momina Mustehsan in the tweet, well, it is her song as well, we’d still say this is pretty cool.

But Twitteratis could not stop and bashed the songstress for thanking Salman Khan even after he did not mention her in the tweet.

Look what people had to say!

And some people called her attention seeker!

And a few people advised her to have some self-respect!

Well, we think it does not matter if Salman Khan mentions Momina or not, she is still one of the most known personalities from Pakistan. There is no doubt that she is loved by many people around the globe and is also a social media sweetheart.

Oozing confidence and giving his female fans a “killer smile”, Ranbir has won our hearts yet again with his look at IIFA.

Does he ever age? Anil Kapoor dressed just perfectly in a dandy suit!

Fawad Khan Faces Social Media Backlash for Supporting Ali Zafar!

Fawad Khan is that one Pakistani celebrity who remains mum on most controversies. Distant from social media and away from the unnecessary spotlight, the superstar makes sure that he never lands himself in hot water.

He is that one celebrity recluse who avoids gossip and grapevine like a plague. However, a heartthrob like him so famous can never stay away from the public eye.

While mostly, Fawad is always a favorite of his fans and an apple of social media’s eye, this time he is facing major backlash for a reason we bet he did not see coming!

We all know how rarely Khan graces press events and media functions. His devotees crave to see him and go crazy whenever he is spotted at any occasion.

Consequently, it was a surprise for many when the Humsafar heartthrob showed up for the music launch of Ali Zafar’s debut movie ‘Teefa in Trouble’.

Ali Zafar-Meesha Shafi Jamming Session Video Leaked on Social Media

While Ali and Fawad’s camaraderie goes a long time back, Maula Jatts’ fans were shocked that he came out in support for Ali Zafar- an alleged harasser.

Social media has clearly lost its chill ever since!

Angry fans took to Twitter to voice out their displeasure over the situation.

People are outraged over how Khan has dismissed the whole Meesha-Ali controversy!

His fandom is no mood to forgive him!

Things have gotten out hands now that Twitterverse is claiming to boycott not only Teefa but Fawad as well.

There is heavy rainfall of hate against Fawad and its show signs of slowing down.

However, some loyal fans are rooting for FK like always!

Someone highlighted that artists should NOT divide over a controversy in the industry!

Some are lauding FK for remaining neutral!

The rest rightly stated that the matter should be resolved in court and no judgment should be made beforehand.

Back in April, Meesha Shafi shocked the nation to express how she was sexually exploited and physically abused by a close colleague, Ali Zafar!

Big-wigs of the entertainment world like Urwa Hocane, Iffat Omer and Osman Khalid Butt supported Meesha for breaking her silence.

Meanwhile, Ali Zafar’s Teefa in Trouble co-star Maya Ali, Mehreen Raheel and Resham stood up for the Coke Studio singer.

The rest of celebrities like Mahira Khan, Armeena Khan and Hamza Ali Abbasi remained unbiased on the whole matter.

While Fawad Khan remained silent on the whole hullabaloo, his sudden rendezvous with Ali Zafar has irked many of his followers.

Will Khan addresses his fans this time and clears the whole chaos? Let’s wait and watch.

Election 2018: PTI Candidate Slapped with Legal Notice for ‘Stealing’ Election Song

Election songs have become a norm in Pakistan, somehow now these tunes have become a regular practice as if they were a part of history.

For many politicians, their slogans and lyrics define who they are and everything they have worked for. However, if stolen, it is understandable that the act goes unappreciated.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate for PP-189 Okara Rao Ali Jabran Bhopal has been sued by Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) candidate for PP-150 Lahore, Jabran Butt, for ‘stealing’ his election song.

According to the reports, the election song belongs to Butt’s campaign, however, was misused and ‘stolen’ by Bhopal because the lyrics have his name in it.

In the legal notice Butt sent to Bhopal, he has demanded an apology for the usage of the anthem and a compensation of Rs 20 million for the inconvenience and damage caused to the politician’s campaign. The notice further stated that if the above demands are not met within 10 days, other consequences will occur.

While talking to Express Tribune, Butt had described how he had worked hard day and night and had given his campaign everything which he had. He stated;

“It is inappropriate to use someone else’s property without permission. If he had asked us to use the anthem, we might have given permission but it is highly inappropriate to use someone’s hard work without seeking permission first.

I was made aware on social media that our anthem was being used and singer Asad then looked into the matter further and gathered evidence.”

Singer Asad Qureshi confirmed that the song was written on 10th June and was recorded on the 12th, furthermore, it was released on the 14th.

Saudis End Ban on Women Behind Wheel

Here are some key facts about the historic move, seen as the most striking in a series of reforms as the kingdom prepares for a post-oil era.

How the reform happened

In September 2017, King Salman issued a decree declaring an end to the decades-long ban from June 2018.

A handful of driving schools for women were subsequently permitted to open in cities such as Riyadh and Jeddah.

Earlier this month, the kingdom began issuing its first driving licences to women in decades, with a handful of women swapping their foreign licences for Saudi ones after undergoing a practical test.

How many women will drive?

Some six million women — or 65 percent of the female driving-age population — are expected to apply for a licence once the ban is lifted, according to the London-based consulting firm Facts Global Energy.

But such a high number may not be immediately attainable, some analysts say.

Some three million women in Saudi Arabia could receive licences and actively begin driving by 2020, according to consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Eligibility

In addition to cars, women will be allowed to drive motorbikes, vans and trucks.

Women with licences from Gulf countries will be required to convert them to Saudi licences, according to the kingdom’s traffic department.

Those with international driving licences would be able to drive in the kingdom for up to a year, after which they would be required to apply for a Saudi licence, the department said.

Licences to drive private vehicles will be granted at the age of 18, and public transport at 20 — the same as men.

Crime and punishment

Many women fear they will be easy prey as drivers in a nation where male “guardians” — their fathers, husbands or other relatives — can exercise arbitrary authority to make decisions on their behalf.

In preparation for the lifting of the ban, the government preemptively addressed concerns of sexual harassment — with a prison term of up to five years and a maximum penalty of 300,000 riyals ($80,000).

New Study Links Low Levels of Vitamin D to Lung Disease

Carried out by researchers at Johns Hopkins University, the study set out to look at which potentially treatable factors are associated with interstitial lung disease (ILD), a relatively rare group of disorders characterized by lung scarring and inflammation.

The disease may lead to progressive, disabling and irreversible lung damage, and once diagnosed most people do not live longer than five years.

Although many cases are caused by environmental toxins such as asbestos or coal dust, ILD can also be caused by autoimmune disorders, infections, medication side effects, and even from unknown causes.

To assess a possible link wth vitamin D, the new study looked at medical information from 6,302 adults with an average age of 62 over a 10-year period.

Blood samples were taken for each participant to measure vitamin D levels, with those with vitamin D levels of less than 20 nanograms per milliliter — which was about 30 percent of participants — considered to be vitamin D deficient.

Those with vitamin D levels of 20-30 nanograms per milliliter were considered to have an “intermediate” but not optimal level of vitamin D, while those with 30 nanograms per milliliter or more were considered to have met recommended levels.

Each participant was also given a heart CT scan so researchers could also assess the lungs at the initial visit, and ten years into the study 2,668 participants received full-lung CT scans to look for presence of scar tissue or other abnormalities.

The researchers found that the participants who were considered to be vitamin D-deficient had a larger volume of bright spots in the lung, which suggests damaged lung tissue, compared with those with adequate vitamin D levels.

These differences were still seen even after adjusting for influencing risk factors of lung disease such as current smoking status, physical inactivity or obesity.

The data from the full-lung scans also showed that those with deficient or intermediate vitamin D levels were 50 to 60 percent more likely to have abnormalities on their full lung scans, which suggests early signs of interstitial lung disease, compared with those with optimal vitamin D levels.

Again, these associations were still seen after the researchers had adjusted for other cardiovascular and inflammatory risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

The researchers caution that their results can’t prove a cause and effect, and further studies are now needed to see if treating vitamin D deficiency, for example with supplements or sunlight exposure, could potentially prevent or slow the progression of the currently untreatable and incurable disorder.

Vitamin D levels can be boosted by spending 15 minutes a day in sunlight or by including vitamin-D rich foods in the diet, such as fatty fish, eggs, fortified dairy products, calf’s liver, and portobello mushrooms.

The results can be found published online in the Journal of Nutrition.

Cabin Fever & Comedians: Life in the World Cup Bubble

As Facebook Ages, Teens Look Elsewhere to Connect

Manon, 17, has a Facebook account but to connect with her friends she turns to other social networks like Instagram or Snapchat.

“I don’t use it to post status updates or personal information,” the San Francisco teen says.

Manon maintains her Facebook account to be able to stay in touch with the large number of users on the huge social network and as a “gateway” to log into other apps.

“But to communicate with my friends, it’s Snapchat,” the high schooler said.

“Everyone says Facebook is out of date. I think it’s because all the parents are on Facebook.”

As Facebook has grown into a network of more than two billion people globally it has lost its luster for younger users who made up a core base.

While Facebook has become one of the world’s most valuable and powerful companies, it’s no longer seen as a cool destination for teens, who are turning to Snapchat and Instagram, which is owned by Facebook.

According to a Pew Research Center survey this year, 51 percent of US teens ages 13 to 17 use Facebook, compared with 72 percent for Instagram and 69 percent who are on Snapchat. The survey found 85 percent used the Google video sharing service YouTube.

The landscape has shifted since a 2014-15 Pew survey which found Facebook leading other social networks with 71 percent of the teen segment.

“The social media environment among teens is quite different from what it was just three years ago,” said Pew researcher Monica Anderson.

“Back then, teens’ social media use mostly revolved around Facebook. Today, their habits revolve less around a single platform.”

The breakup of teens and Facebook was occurring before the latest scandals which have hit Facebook over hijacked user data and propagation of misinformation.

According to a Forrester Research survey 34 percent of US online youth view Facebook “as a website for old people and parents.”

“US online youth regard Facebook as utility, while other networks that deliver niche value steal attention from Facebook’s broad platform,” said Forrester’s Anjali Lai in a research note.

“Established social networks face an image problem.”

A separate report by the research firm eMarketer came to a similar conclusion, estimating that Facebook would lose some two million US users under age 24 this year.

– Still king globally –

Facebook remains king of the social media space and is still growing, though more slowly than in past years.

Its profit in the first quarter of 2018 jumped 63 percent from a year ago to $5 billion, and total revenues increased 49 percent to $11.97 billion.

And the California company has been moving to become more diversified, with its “family” of apps that include Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, and virtual reality gear from its Oculus division.

To connect with younger audiences, Facebook has launched a parentally controlled Messenger Kids app for those too young to have their own Facebook account, and recently expanded that to Peru and Canada.

Facebook is also moving to challenge YouTube, and potentially other services like Netflix, with original video on its own platform and on Instagram, which now has one billion users.

With 2.2 billion users, Facebook still has a big lead over Snapchat, with 191 million users at the end of March, and Twitter with 336 million.

“Snapchat has a lot of growing to do before it can really be a huge challenger to Facebook,” said Debra Williamson, social media analyst at eMarketer.

But the trends show services like Instagram and Snapchat — which has grown beyond its original offering of disappearing messages — have become the new, cool place for young smartphone users.

With Snapchat, “you can add animation, special effects, that’s what’s interesting for my generation,” said 16-year-old Charlotte, another San Francisco high school student.

Manon said she also likes Instagram because it is “more about creativity, people who make music or photography can post what they do.”

PIA’s Female Pilots Ridiculously Trolled for Flying to Gilgit!

In the 21st century where the world has advanced in phenomenal ways, there are still some who consider women to be the weaker gender.

Unfortunately, we saw a similar mindset after a picture of two Pakistan International Airline (PIA) female pilots went viral.

The national carrier took it to Twitter to praise their brave Captain, Maryam Masood and First Officer, Shumaila Mazhar, for a successful flight to Gilgit from Islamabad, the post read;

The flight to Gilgit is very challenging and requires a lot of precision and technique. Our dynamic duo, Captain Maryam Masood and First Officer Shumaila Mazhar make it look so easy as they fly through the mountains celebrating the beauty of our northern areas! Way to go!!

The original photo has been shared over 800 times on social media!

While the girls were applauded and praised for their achievement by many all across social media…

There were those who mocked and made fun of the ladies!

Girls have always proven, and are always proving that it does not matter what your gender you may be, as long as you are passionate, strong-willed and determined to make your dreams come true, it will happen!

We have reached out to both Maryam and Shumaila to share their flight experience.
