ACCA’s New Cert PFM Qualification to Upskill Public Sector Finance Professionals
The new Certificate in Public Financial Management (Cert PFM) qualification by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is now available for public sector employees and those looking to work in the sector in the future.
The global public sector is changing so it is critical that finance professionals working in the industry can manage it.
Whilst the ACCA Qualification is a perfect fit for a career in the public sector, ACCA has developed the Cert PFM to help support and build strong public financial management in response to this demand from the industry.
Cert PFM is designed to equip people with stronger and more relevant budgeting, financial reporting and financial management skills specifically for the public sector.
Delivering practical and broad-based knowledge of public financial management, the course covers the foundations of public sector finance and ensures public sector employees have a core understanding of what is involved in using essential information for those in public sector careers.
The course is built around the public financial management cycle including:
- Planning and budgeting
- Budget execution
- Accounting and reporting
- Audit, governance and oversight
Cert PFM includes both an online course and an assessment and it takes approximately 40 hours to complete.
Sajjeed Aslam, head of ACCA Pakistan said, “We work with public sector organizations in Pakistan and across the globe to develop the accountants the fast-changing world needs – accountants who will help to build better societies, economies, and nations. Many public sector organizations look to us to keep their teams up-to-date and future-ready. They recognize the power of our qualifications and support, both for now and in the future. And this new qualification is another example of our commitment to this important sector.”
Judith Bennett, director of professional qualifications said, “We’re delighted to now offer the Cert PFM qualification worldwide. Given the pace of change and size of expenditure in the public sector, it’s critical that those working in the sector have the right skills to deal with the challenges ahead. We have developed this qualification in response to demand from the public sector and to help support and build strong public financial management. ACCA believes public finance professionals play a role as key enablers and supporters of innovation throughout the public sector.”
Alex Metcalfe, head of public sector policy adds, “ACCA has a long history of involvement in developing the finance profession that the public sector needs. Our 67,000 members and students working in the public sector organizations around the world demonstrate that the ACCA Qualification is fit for the public sector, but our capacity-building work highlighted a need for introductory training in PFM. This new Cert PFM will meet that demand and provide public sector employees with the foundations required to excel in the public sector.”
Cert PFM is suitable for new entrants to the public sector, as well as staff with practical experience but without formal professional qualifications, and professional accountants moving into the public sector from the corporate sector or professional practice.
For those that already hold a professional qualification, Cert PFM can be a valuable source of continuing personal development (CPD) for members, offering an opportunity to top up existing competencies with specific knowledge and skills around public financial management.

Pakistan Featured on Forbes ‘Best Under-the-Radar Places to Visit in 2020’
Pakistan has stolen the spotlight for travelers who are looking for adventures this year.
The country was named as one of the best destinations to travel to in 2020 by Condé Nast Traveler in December 2019.
This was followed by British Backpacker Society ranking Pakistan third on its highest potential adventure travel destinations for 2020 list.
Now, Pakistan has also made it to Forbes’ Best Under-the-Radar Places to Visit in 2020 as well.
Travel off the beaten path in 2020 https://t.co/OLa4kzvzMC pic.twitter.com/xzEJEOTar2
— Forbes (@Forbes) January 3, 2020
Other countries featured on the list include Armenia, Chad, Eritrea, Guatemala, Mongolia, and Saudi Arabia among others.
The list is based on this newly discovered need of modern tourists.
The magazine writes:
Closed countries are opening up. Savvy luxury agencies are making remote destinations accessible to travelers who don’t want to rough it or risk much. And it’s also just feeling like the right thing to do.
Jonny Bealby’s company anticipates Pakistan as a destination to be one to watch in coming years especially after the nod from Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s recent visit.
On why the country is the next big destination, he said: “Pakistan is perhaps the ultimate adventure travel destination.”
It offers ancient Indus civilizations stretching back 4,000 years, and exciting cities like Lahore with its forts, mosques, and palaces. But most of all, it offers incredible scenery, particularly in the north where the three greatest mountain ranges collide.
Pakistan is great for trekking, mountain biking, rafting or just cultural tourism. The infrastructure has also improved, with resurfaced roads and new tunnels cutting down travel time, new luxury hotels are opening up in the region.
The new e-visa system and stability in the country, as well as the welcoming of international cricket and the royal visit by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, has done the country justice.

Hameed Haroon Sends Legal Notice to Jami Moor Over ‘Rape Allegations’
Dawn CEO, Hameed Haroon on Monday sent a defamation notice to the renowned filmmaker Jamshed ‘Jami’ Moor.
The notice read that Haroon is seeking an “unconditional public apology” for the allegations Jami has accused him of.
Both have been a part of public dispute since Jami revealed the name of his alleged rapist.
In October 2019, Jami broke the news on his Twitter that he was raped by a ‘media tycoon’ with influential ties.
#MeToo: Filmmaker Jami Opens Up about Being Sexually Assaulted By Media Giant
Furthermore, Jami has said he has received the notice and is in the process of perusing it, according to Dawn.com, which spoke to the filmmaker.
He added:
An apology was ‘not even a distant possibility’. There is a lot that needs to be done for victims of sexual harassment and for future victims,
Contents of the Notice
“[…] Almost two months after circulating your first tweet on being allegedly raped, and strangely and abruptly traveling outside Pakistan, on December 28, 2019, on the social media platform Twitter, you falsely and maliciously labeled our client as an alleged rapist,” the notice states.
“Since then, you have been continuing to circulate this false allegation all over Pakistan, including Karachi and abroad. Our client categorically denies that he has ever perpetrated the sexual assault on anyone and categorically denies that he has raped you.”
The notice repeats earlier accusations leveled by Haroon against Jami, including that the filmmaker is ‘defaming’ Haroon at the behest of powerful interests in the state who wish to “destroy [Haroon’s] credibility, especially his credibility as a leading advocate of the freedom of the press.”
According to Haroon’s legal team, Jami issued “a false statement […] to injure the reputation” of their client.
It says that Jami wanted to subject Haroon to “ridicule, unjust criticism, dislike, contempt and hatred and to target the freedom of the press”.
It should be mentioned that Jami has previously stated that he was summoned and assured of support if he went public with his allegations. He, however, claimed he had turned down the ‘offer’, saying his fight was not with Dawn as an institution, but with the person who assaulted him.
Jami has been told to issue an “unconditional public apology” as well as a retraction of his rape allegation “from all social media posts and other media outlets within 14 days of the receipt of this notice.”
He has been warned of criminal legal proceedings under Section 499 of the Pakistan Penal Code, 1860, and the Defamation Ordinance, 2002 in case he does not comply.

Social Media Calls Out Iqra Aziz for Her Upcoming Controversial Drama ‘Jhooti’
ARY Digital has an upcoming drama that stars the newlywed Iqra Aziz, Yasir Hussain and also the funny man Ahmed Ali Butt.
Titled ‘Jhooti’, the drama has two trailers and while the first one seemed like the plot is intriguing, the other caused havoc on social media.
The trailer implies that Aziz is playing a woman who is pretending to be a victim of domestic abuse, leading us to wonder if this is what makes her character a jhooti.
Here is the first trailer of the upcoming drama serial:
Check out the first look of #Jhooti which will be coming soon only on #ARYDigital! #IqraAziz #YasirHussain #AhmedAliButt @iiqraziz @ahmedaliB #aryddramapic.twitter.com/RfY5LUWKqC
— ARY Digital Drama (@aryddrama) January 4, 2020
In the teaser clip, we see a bruised Iqra Aziz calling out men for the abuse of power. On the verge of tears, she points at her bruises as evidence of what her terrible husband did to her.
When she is about to burst in tears, we see a speck of deceit in her eyes. The next few glimpses indicate that her character may have done this to herself. Finally, she applauds herself, as she was rehearsing in front of the mirror.
The Twitter users did not appreciate the drama plot and were unhappy with ARY Digital.
this is fucking disgusting. congratulations for playing your part on stereotyping Pakistani women as pathological liars who make up their trauma for fun. down with every single one of you. scumbags. https://t.co/uF9E6fB6gk
— #JunaidHafeez || علیزا سکھیرا (@aliza_sukhera) January 4, 2020
They also said that women are already doubted in our society and such shows are no highlight of the industry.
The society already doesn’t believe in the physical, emotional, sexual abuse women face, and shows like these don’t help. They minimize the struggles encountered by everyday women. https://t.co/fN2u3VRgml
— Shajia (@abidishajia) January 4, 2020
Another user shared statistics of women in Pakistan who suffer due to domestic violence
Roughly 5000 women get killed every year in domestic violence cases in Pakistan. This is the most tone deaf, insensitive shit someone can pull off. Bravo kanjaru https://t.co/6l2xd6cshh
— سک آف یور نانسینس سغراں (@01101100A) January 4, 2020
This user stated how such dramas will influence our society and their minds
What sort of Bullshit production is this?#Jhooti i.e. portraying Pakistani women as liars over the domestic abuse and violence is tbh not cool
WTF is the producer of this drama??? https://t.co/wg9wdI5CdU
— Salman (@SalmanJpt) January 5, 2020
More people spoke up against the trailer and it what showcased
This is absolutely disgusting. You’re trivialising domestic abuse & reinforcing stereotypes that the woman is always lying about her abuse. Stop dismissing real issues experienced by millions of women daily. @iiqraziz @ahmedaliB @aryddrama this is NOT ‘entertainment’ https://t.co/0t6DrOdcUi
— Daanika Kamal (@daanistan) January 5, 2020
Twitter users were not happy with the teaser of Jhooti and that’s crystal clear.
Pakistani dramas should get an award for being absolutely insulting and demeaning to a whole new level. Instead of creating awareness about domestic abuse, they decide to create a drama that makes a joke out of domestic abuse. Pathetic and absolute garbage, shame on iqra aziz https://t.co/Ld4GkvS6Jr
— Eman Sadiq (@EmanSadiq4) January 5, 2020
People encourage ARY Digital to understand that domestic violence is not a joke
For Gods sake this has to stop! It’s already a miserable life for victims out there who do get the courage- this is sick! It gives justification and value to the abusers who say “dekha jhoot bolti hain sub” #stopairingjhooti @AryDigitalDrama
— Moomal (@acerbtrenchant) January 5, 2020
Here’s the trailer number 2 of Jhooti
Let’s see what the upcoming drama serial brings to the table and if it will be a yay or a nay for the masses. Up until now it seems to be receiving a lot negative feedback.
Gold Prices Hit All-Time High in Pakistan Amid Gulf Tensions!
The critical and extremely sensitive situation between the United States of America and Iran have resulted in a price hike.
Both oil and gold prices have shot up amid Gulf tensions. Gold prices have now hit an all-time high in Pakistan costing Rs93,400/tola.
The two countries are on the brink of war after a drone strike ordered by President Trump martyred Iranian military general Qassem Soleimani last week.
As per reports, gold moved up Rs2,600 or 2.86 percent to Rs93,400 per tola from Rs90,800. Haroon Chand, President All Sindh Saraf Jewellers Association, said Iran-US tension was the major cause behind the increase in the prices.
Whenever there are uncertainty and the war-like situation around the world, people invest in gold, which is considered safe haven.
The US is not increasing interest rate, nor are there any new jobs being created, so dollar is also weakening and people are moving towards gold as a mode of investment
The price of 10-gram gold also moved up Rs2,230 to Rs80,075. In the international market, the prices of the yellow metal increased $26 to $1,578 per ounce.
Only investors were buying pure gold bars for investment purpose, while jewellery sale is down,
Less than one percent people are coming to buy gold. They have no issue with the price and can afford gold, while 99 percent people are going for artificial jewellery. – Muhammad Shafi Khan, senior goldsmith
If tensions increase and a war starts gold can go to an all-time high. If the situation calms down, it can go down $1,500 or below.

#MeToo: “I Have Been Through Harassment in my Career and Life” Ayesha Omar Opens to Ahsan Khan
Pakistani actress and model Ayesha Omar opened up to Ahsan Khan in an interview. The starlet shared that she has been harassed throughout her life and in her career.
She further added that she still is in trauma and does not have the courage yet to speak up about the incidents that have taken place.
During the interview, Ayesha also shared that the #MeToo movement is extremely important to individuals because it takes everything they have to speak up about their experiences.
She even added that there are countless men and women in the industry who have gone through a similar state.
Ayesha shared:
This movement is extremely important because it takes a lot for the people who’ve been victims to open up about their experiences. There are so many men and women in our own industry who have been through it.
We need more people to come out, even if only the renowned are talked about. The lack of projection for some some, should not be considered as discriminatory towards anyone else’s struggles.
It should simply be taken as a means to empower those without mediums by channeling them through those with the means.
It is extremely commendable of those who come out with their experiences, making MeToo an extremely brave movement.
Even though it may also be exploited, but that doesn’t make the movement bad. Being exploited is no the movement’s intention. It’s just that, everything ends up being exploited.
The diva ended with a note that may be in the long-run, she will also find that anchor she needs in order to open about her experience someday.
I have been through harassment in my career and life, so I understand how it feels. I don’t have the courage to talk about it yet, maybe someday I will. But I can totally relate with everyone who has been through it.
There is no particular time for one to open up about it, it can take one 20 years, another only one, while for some it takes two minutes. People can come out whenever.
