Coca-Cola Pulls Out of CokeFest Amid Economic Slowdown

CocaCola CokeFest

Coca-Cola Export Corporation (Pakistan) has pulled the plug as the titled sponsor for CokeFest.

The reason behind the brand’s withdrawal is the economic slowdown in the country and change in management.

The annual food festival that was held by ActiveMedia and backed by Coca-Cola started back in 2016.

ActiveMedia has confirmed that Coca-Cola is no longer the title sponsor, however, the event will go on under a different title called ‘Soul Food Festival’.

The festival is still very much alive. Coca-Cola has pulled out from the event for their own reasons, but all the other sponsors are still on board -Saad M Khan, the CEO of Active Media told Profit.

According to Profit, the reason Coca-Cola stepped back was that the new management was questioning the return on investment the brand was making to sponsor the festival.

An official has shared that the current recession in the economy has also strained profit for the brand in Pakistan, sales have also fallen.

There were also security concerns. The event is not owned by Coca-Cola, and we make no profits from it, but it has our name plastered all over it. If anything goes wrong, it is our head on the chopping block -An Official told Profit

Coca-Cola, on the other hand, has not made an official announcement or has said anything in regards to this news. The brand has stated that they will release an official statement if need be.

Furthermore, Profit reports that there were some discrepancies between the brand and ActiveMedia in accordance with the operations of the festival.

Coca-Cola’s communication boss, Fahad Qadir, said:

After many successful editions, The Coca-Cola Export Corporation, Pakistan Branch, has decided to not sponsor FoodFest for 2019-20, in line with our evolving business strategy. All of our focus is currently on Coke Studio.

However, there are all kinds of possibilities to enter into the food side. And while we have pulled out of CokeFest thanks to the recent recession, we are constantly working on new ideas on how to expand.

We have now to see what Coca-Cola decides. What do you think of this sudden decision?

Shan Foods Clarifies Rumors of Acquisition by Unilever Pakistan

Unilever

Rumors have been speculating the social media that a multinational giant has acquired Shan Foods.

A tweet claiming that a multinational giant has acquired Shan Foods had gone viral. It was also claimed that Unilever, the Multinational Giant is the one to acquire 51% stakes of Shan Foods for an astounding 1.2 Billion USD.

This move could have been a part of Shan Foods’ expansion plans which were announced last year, when they started looking for an IPO (Initial Public Offering) back in May 2018. It was also indicated that this expansion might take place in 2020.

Last year, it was also claimed in some media reports that Unilever Group plans to invest the US $120m in Pakistan over the next two years. So there may be some truth behind this speculation that is going viral nowadays.

However, all claims and speculations have been denied by Shan Foods. Shan Foods has put forward a holding statement on all of their social media pages along with their website claiming that these speculations are nothing but a rumor.

Although Shan Foods in its holding statement has denied such rumors, it was also stated that “IF and WHEN” something like this were to happen in the future, then the food giants would be the first to announce it to all their stakeholders.

Adding further, the statement also said that Shan Foods has established itself as “a powerful global brand” and it would continue to explore itself in order to strengthen its business outlooks.

So even though this recent claim has been denied, there could be a possibility of it being somewhat true.

Jami Calls Out Soul Brothers Pakistan for Being a Toxic Male Group

jami

Jami Moor, famous Pakistani filmmaker, has been in the spotlight for the past week after he opened up to the public about his #MeToo story.

Jami has always spoken for assault and abuse victims in the past, regardless of the nature of the abuse or the gender of the parties involved.

Jami came out about his story through a twitter thread, and his story immediately caught attention from media, influencers, and fans and follower in general.

#MeToo: Filmmaker Jami Opens Up about Being Sexually Assaulted By Media Giant

Explaining his own story, he also mentioned that one of the reasons he had always supported such stories because he could relate to them on a personal level.

He received all sorts of mixed reactions from social media as a result of opening up, and was thankful for all the support and kindness extended towards him.

While his story was covered by many tabloids, some kept Jami’s truth intact but some chose to either modify it or removed the story altogether which visibly upset the director.

Recently Jami took to facebook to call out a facebook group called Soul Brothers Pakistan.

He called the group toxic in his post but did not mention exactly what had caused him to make that comment.

However, it seemed clear by the comments by other men that Jami was not the only one who thought like that. Take a look:

“So much agree to this but it gives you a window also of how our patriarchal, conservative and regressive society actually is!”

“Someone had once added me to this group and I was kicked out within a week for calling out the sheer jahaalat of its members.”

“Most posts are pseudo-woke or completely lacking any self awareness. Have it on mute.”

Are you of the same opinion on this male only, private facebook group?

Founded in 2016 by a group of visual art professionals and educators, Karachi Bienalle Trust(KBT)  a not-for-profit platform to promote creativity, innovation and criticality in the visual arts in the metropolis

It works closely with a network of local and international cultural, educational and philanthropic organizations. A flahsgip project of the KBT, Karachi Biennale (KB) has been designed to use art as a vehicle to discover, discuss and respond to Karachi.

Having made its debut in 2017 – highlighting ‘Witness’ as a theme – Karachi Biennale has returned this year with the theme, ‘Ecology’.

One of the installations that garnered a lot of social media attention was Killing Fields of Karachi’ for being shut down forcibly on Sunday by alleged LEAs.

PEMRA Directs Anchors Not to Give Opinions on Talk Shows

The display was by female artist Adeela Suleman, and it mourned the 444 killings done by Rao Anwer, former SSP Malir.

The lower hall of the building, where part of the exhibit was displayed, has reportedly been sealed as confirmed by the artist herself.

Social Activist and Lawyer, Jibran Nasir has never been afraid of speaking up for justice. Hence he held a press conference alongside other members of civil society to discuss why the display was taken down.

“YOU ALL MUST HAVE SEEN PILLARS INSTALLED HERE WHICH SYMBOLISE KARACHI’S BLOODY HISTORY — THE 444 MURDERS WHICH WERE COMMITTED BETWEEN 2011 AND 2018 BY RAO ANWAR. THIS IS NOT A MATTER OF DISPUTE. THIS IS A FACT WHICH IS PART OF POLICE RECORD,”

“THERE ARE GRAVES HERE MARKING THE DEATHS AND THERE WAS A VIDEO PROJECTION WHICH CONTAINED VISUALS OF NAQEEBULLAH’S FATHER, AND VISUALS OF THE PLACE WHERE NAQEEBULLAH AND THREE OTHERS WERE MURDERED.

“AT 11 IN THE MORNING, SOME PEOPLE CAME HERE WHO INTRODUCED THEMSELVES AS BELONGING TO SENSITIVE ORGANISATIONS AND THEY SAID THIS ROOM SHOULD BE CLOSED AND PUT UNDER A LOCK, OTHERWISE ALL THE MATERIALS, LAPTOPS, PROJECTORS, PAINTINGS, WILL BE DESTROYED.”

Suleman is an associate professor and head of the Fine Art Department at Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture.

She said that two persons in a civilian dress appeared at around 10am and “pressurised” the administration of the Frere Hall to stop the exhibition, otherwise, they would forcibly stop it.

Hina Munawar becomes first-ever woman Commanding Officer in 106 years history of FC

Addressing the press conference, to speak about her exhibit’s closure, she said:

“MY AIM WAS JUST TO TELL A STORY. I WAS, IN FACT, REPEATING AN EVENT WHICH TOOK PLACE A YEAR EARLIER.”

“IT [THE DISPLAY] CONTAINED NO SUCH THING WHICH WAS NOT ALREADY PART OF GENERAL PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE,” SHE SAID, VISIBLY UPSET.

“IF ARTISTS CAN NOT EXPRESS THEMSELVES IN THEIR OWN WAY, THEN I REALLY CAN’T SAY HOW WE WILL EVER HAVE ANY CREATION OF ART AND WHO WE WILL HAVE TO TAKE PERMISSION FROM.”

Here’s what DIG South Sharjeel Kharal told Dawn:

“WE HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY COMPLAINT FROM ARTIST OR ORGANISERS FORMALLY OR INFORMALLY ABOUT [THE MATTER].”

“THIS THING HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO OUR NOTICE AND WE ARE LOOKING INTO IT,” ADDED THE CHIEF OF THE SOUTH ZONE POLICE.

What was worse, Jibran’s press conference was interrupted and Jibran was physically attacked during his address.

The unknown men threw away mics of media and tried to censor them.

A video snippet from the press conference shows Nasir being interrupted by a man who later introduced himself as DG (director general) Parks.

Nasir, however, refused to budge as expected from a man like him.

Now, social media is not only furious at the removal of the art display but also at the way Jibran was attacked.

Many fans, followers, and influential personalities have began protesting it on social media with the aim to fail the LEA’s attempts at silencing the artist and the activist.

#HBLGoesPink for Breast Cancer Awareness During Pinktober!

October or Pinktober is known internationally as breast cancer awareness month.

According to the World Health Organization, it is the most common form of cancer in women and 1 in 8 women is diagnosed with it.

As an institution that is a strong proponent of diversity and equality in the workplace, Habib Bank Limited (HBL) feels strongly about creating awareness about this disease.

As an ode to the women who are fighting to survive and to show solidarity to those who have lost the war against cancer, the leading financial institution illuminated its iconic HBL Plaza, I.I Chundrigar and HBL Tower, Clifton in Pink throughout 25th-26th October.

As a responsible and prominent leader, HBL considers this its responsibility towards the people of Pakistan.

Furthermore, awareness sessions were conducted throughout all offices for the staff. Professional doctors curated the sessions to help women understand the risks associated with breast cancer.

They even shared techniques as to how to identify the lumps/tumors and shared the importance of self-examination and regular checkups. The doctors also urged these women to share their learnings with family and friends.

To further support this cause, HBL hosted Pink Day in which all employees were encouraged to wear the colour pink to create awareness for the cause.

Pioneers like HBL have always contributed to Pakistan not only economically but also in highlighting social causes and concerns. As a responsible and renowned name, HBL has shown that sometimes a little effort goes a long way.

Kudos to HBL and its employees for their support towards this battle!
