Zameen’s Parent Company EMPG Acquires Lamudi Global, Enters Philippines, Indonesia & Mexico

DUBAI: EMPG, the parent company of Pakistan’s largest real estate portal Zameen and one of the leading digital classifieds groups in the MENA, South Asia and Southeast Asia regions, has announced its acquisition of Lamudi Global, which has businesses in Philippines, Indonesia and Mexico.

The group said the acquisition had taken place before its merger with OLX Group’s businesses in MENA and South Asia that raised EMPG’s valuation to $1 billion, which was announced last week. EMPG had also acquired Thailand’s top marketplace Kaidee in February, which – along with the Lamudi Global transaction – marks a strong push into Southeast Asia for the group.

EMPG owns and operates Bayut in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, Zameen in Pakistan, Bproperty.com in Bangladesh, and Mubawab in Morocco and Tunisia, alongside Kaidee. It now also owns and operates Dubizzle in the UAE, OLX Pakistan, OLX Egypt and OLX Lebanon, in addition to several other OLX platforms in the GCC.

Lamudi was founded in 2013 as an online property platform focused on emerging markets. Lamudi is currently a well-recognized brand and a well-established player in Philippines, Indonesia and Mexico. EMPG had already acquired Lamudi’s Middle East, Pakistan and Bangladesh businesses last year.

The combined total of real estate transactions in the Philippines, Indonesia and Mexico is estimated to be US $55.1 billion per year, with a potential commission pool of over US $2.3 billion for real estate professionals. The combined population of the three countries is just shy of half a billion people.

EMPG CEO Imran Ali Khan said, “We welcome the Lamudi Global teams to the EMPG family. They bring with them a lot of experience and domain knowledge, and we value the people who have been with the business since the beginning. We look forward to working with the team to continue growing the business, and EMPG will provide strategic, technological and financial support as needed.”

He added that the acquisition also signalled EMPG’s intent to focus on Southeast Asia in addition to its core regions.

“Our aim is to build a strong presence in the region with these acquisitions. Southeast Asia is a bustling, happening market with tremendous potential, and we look forward to providing the best experience to both professionals and consumers,” said Khan.

Kian Moini, CEO of Lamudi, said EMPG’s expansion into the region would raise the bar for online marketplaces.

“EMPG has built highly successful businesses in all of its geographies, and the group’s strategic depth and advanced tech are two major assets Lamudi looks forward to as we begin this next phase of our journey,” he said.

The transaction value was not disclosed.

3 Ways To Look After Your Car’s Cooling System

3 Ways to Look After Your Car’s Cooling System

Whether you are an experienced driver or a new one, in both cases, it is very crucial to understand the importance of your car’s cooling system. A car engine produces a lot of heat when it is running and must be cooled continuously to avoid engine damage.

Generally, this is done by circulating coolant liquid, usually water mixed with an antifreeze solution through unique cooling passages. Some engines are cooled by air flowing over finned cylinder casings.

In a country like Pakistan, where the summers are sweltering, the cooling system becomes a critical part of the drive. Because the temperature can surge to over 40 degrees Celsius, a reliable and well maintained cooling system may very well be the difference between a well-running engine and one that can self-implode.

Here are a couple of tips to help you maintain a properly functioning cooling system.

1. Keep Tabs on the Cooling Fan

3 Ways To Look After Your Car’s Cooling System
Source: Suttoncarspares

The cooling fan is responsible for keeping the radiator cool to prevent over-heating. In case if the radiator is getting too hot, that means your cooling fan may not be working as efficiently as before. In that case, check the fuses and solenoids that connect to the fan to see if they are worn. If need be, join the fan directly to the battery to avoid significant engine damage caused by over-heating.

2. Monitor Fluid Levels

3 Ways To Look After Your Car’s Cooling System

Just like how you need water to stay hydrated, cars require liquids to be able to function smoothly. Moreover, just like how you naturally consume more water in the summers, cars also need more liquids during these months. Once the temperature builds up and the vehicle begins to get warm, the radiator gets pressurized to improve the boiling point of the fluid.

While water is an excellent conductor of heat, a mixture of coolant and water usually works best. Most manufacturers will advise a 100 percent coolant or 50:50 percent coolant to water ratio in their cars. Be sure to ask an expert mechanic for the best coolant for your vehicle before you opt for a random one.

3. Keep Check on the Radiator Hoses

3 Ways To Look After Your Car’s Cooling System

Radiator hoses connect the engine block and the water pump to the radiator and also plays a vital role in keeping the car cool during the harsh summers. Since these hosen are made from rubber, and because of the intense heat that is generated under the hood, they wear and tear eventually. Even the smallest leak or crack in the rubber can lead to a significant issue. Loss of pressure in the cooling circuit can not only a sudden increase in water temperature but can also lead to overheating of the engine. It’s always a good idea to do a visual examination of these hoses.

Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar Is All Set To Create A Series Similar To Dirilis: Ertugrul

Khalil ur Rehman making ertugal

Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar is a name that requires no introduction. He has always been in the spotlight for one reason or another. While the famous writer has been denounced for his stance on topics such as feminism, Qamar is now working on a script similar to the acclaimed Turkish period drama, Dirilis: Ertugrul, that has now become a matter of the moment.

The drama serial Dirilis: Ertugrul is so popular that PM Imran Khan has suggested the nation to watch the show and gain a good knowledge of Islamic heroes. However, sadly the Pakistani entertainment industry hasn’t been able to create a masterpiece like it.

When can we see the play?

The Meray Paas Tum Ho writer announced that he already had a word with the Punjab Nahi Jaungi actor Humayun Saeed concerning the new series, and the duo will be working on a show similar to the renowned Turkish drama.

“Of course, we are thinking of making something like this. Three days ago, I spoke to Humayun Saeed about this, and we have decided to make something,” stated Khalil-ur-Rehman.

The Kaaf Kangana director went on to add, “I have been asking him to work on something like this for the last twelve years, but the problem is we have limitations. We do not have enough facilities. Otherwise, we have brilliant actors.”

The director also mentioned that we are stuck in typical saas-bahu dramas, so we do not pay attention to topics like Ertugrul Ghazi, he went on to say.

When he was congratulated on even thinking about working on a script as grand as the Turkish epic, the writer quickly interrupted and said, “I am not just thinking about it, I am going to start penning the script from tomorrow.”

Why is Dirilis: Ertugrul talk of the town?

Ertugrul has given people something to watch outside of English-language Hollywood movies, and it’s based on the life and times of the 13th-century Muslim Oghuz Turk leader, Ertugrul, has taken Pakistan by storm.

Ertugrul was the father of Osman, the founder of the Ottoman dynasty, which ruled a large part of the world for 600 years, and the drama has helped many learn about Islamic history.

Let’s see what we have in stores and what does director Khalil-ur-Rehman intends to show the masses. We’re undoubtedly bored of our minds watching the same misogynist Pakistani dramas, and this play might be a fresh breath of air.

Even before the premiere took over office, he has talked about his vision for a digitally-advanced, modern, and a tech-savvy Pakistan that can do wonders around the world. The Prime Minister has, from day one, emphasized the importance of introducing new and improved digital solutions to help make lives easier for all Pakistanis.

He launched the Digital Pakistan initiative with former Chief of Staff and Head of Strategic Initiatives on the Next Billion Users (NBU) team at Google Tanya Aidrus.

The future of Pakistan is very exciting. Developments [in the digital arena] are taking place at a fast pace, and in the times to come everything would be done through a mobile phone.” He added.

The vision sets Pakistan’s digital ambition and has been designed both for the government and the private sector to work towards a digitally progressive and inclusive Pakistan. According to a statement, it brings together multiple initiatives that the government has already kicked off, and identifies additional focus areas that it will initiate in the coming months. Digital Voice Technology Gains Momentum Amidst Pandemic Crisis!

Digital Voice Technology
Smartphones are not the only technology that have picked up pace, over the years digital voice technology has also become a keen interest for many

Technology is fantastic, especially the fact that humans have come a long way in groundbreaking tech in a short time.

The world’s first smartphone was invented in 1992 and was available for sale in 1994. Over the years, manufacturers become more innovative, as they shredded the bulky bodies, they introduced new features that our parents and many of us would not have thought to be possible.

Fast-forwarding to now, foldable phones with bezel-less displays, with water-proof technology and a virtual assistant, have become common.

Smartphones are not the only technology that has picked up the pace; over the years, digital voice technology has also become a keen interest for many individuals.

It is incredible how digital voice tech is no longer just limited to smartphones but has now become an essential part of life. Who knew that one day it would help you navigate your way to your destination, or will remind you of tasks needed to be done, or remember your favorite song!

Voice assistants can already do a lot for you, from placing orders, to helping you shop, closing lights, thermostats, to even changing the TV channel!

Use of Digital Voice Technology Amidst the Coronavirus Pandemic

Source: ichongqing

With the novel coronavirus pandemic upon us, this has got us thinking, is digital voice tech the best way forward from here on out?

Coronavirus is spread by one human to another via human contact, to prevent it from spreading further, governments have issued SOPs directing people to stay away from each other. Companies have changed their ways of marketing. The food industry has changed its method of delivering, as well.

According to analyst Jonathan Collins of ABI Research the pandemic is likely to provide “additional motivation and incentive for voice control in the home that will help drive awareness and adoption for a range of additional smart home devices and applications,”

ABI estimates that voice control device shipments for smart home devices hit 141 million last year, and in 2020 will grow globally by close to 30 percent.

On the other hand, Juniper Research estimates 4.2 billion devices in use this year, growing to 8.4bn by 2024, with much of the interactions on smartphones.

What will be the Future?

According to Collins, there will be a vast surge in smart locks and doorbells, along with other intelligent home systems, to eliminate the need for personal contact and face-to-face interactions because of COVID-19.

Avi Greengart, a technology analyst and consultant with Techsponential, shared that although there is no data available as of yet, “anecdotally, voice assistant usage is way up” as a result of the lockdown.

“Looking forward, office spaces will need move towards more touch-free controls; voice can be a solution, although motion triggers for lighting are often easier and more friction-free,” he added.

“However, I do expect smart speakers — along with an emailed list of commands — to be a common feature at hotels and other rental properties. The fewer touchpoints, the better.”

What do you think will be the Future of technology?

Etihad Airways Lays Off Staff Amid Coronavirus

Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways has laid off a large number of employees due to the ongoing pandemic since the travel ban has been imposed across the world.

COVID-19 has drowned the global travel demand. The airline has warned staff that there might be further cuts to survive during these uncertain times, according to three sources familiar with the matter, reports Reuters.

How many employees have been affected?

There has been no official announcement that clearly says as to how employees have been affected.

From which department have employees been fired?

The state-owned airline declined to comment on the matter as many airlines struggle through the pandemic.

Tony Douglas, Eithad’s Chief Executive, said the airline has made “quite sizeable redundancies” during an unreported U.S.-UAE Business Council webinar on April 29.

What is the % of temporary cut wages?

Scheduled passenger flights have been grounded by the state running airline, and a whopping 50 % has implemented temporarily cut wages.

When Will, the Flights, be Scheduled Next?

The airline is set to restart flights from mid-June, 2020.

How many Employees did Eithad Airways recruit before the pandemic?

According to the Etihad Airways website, the airline had 20,520 employees previously, as of August 2019.

It is not surprising to see airlines letting go off their staff as the travel ban over the past few weeks has diminished profits for many businesses.

The coronavirus pandemic has claimed over 287,354 deaths, while 4,256,540 confirmed cases in 212 countries and territories.

On the contrary, Emirates, a Dubai based airline has recorded a profit of 21 percent rise in full-year profit on Sunday but warned the outbreak of the coronavirus hit its performance in the fourth quarter of the financial year.

The Dubai carrier made $287.5 million in the 12 months to March 31, compared to 871 million dirhams a year earlier. There have been no lay off’s announced by the airline as of now.

The airline has announced that it will operate limited passenger flights. These flights will carry travelers from several selected destinations to the UAE, including Frankfurt and London Heathrow.

As people practice social distancing, companies across the world suffer. Public means of transportation have been declared at ‘high risk’ across the globe since it enables the spread of the virus.

I knew I needed to live my life and be true to who I was. I needed to be honest with myself, and that was coming out as a transgender woman.”

Transgender individuals have fought long and hard to be recognized in Pakistan. Their hard work finally became fruitful in 2009 when the Supreme Court announced that they will be granted special status and will be given equal rights as other citizens.

Unfortunately, although they are a part of Pakistan, they are to date discriminated against and treated harshly. Nonetheless, many of the brave members of the transgender community have become a massive part of serving their nation.

Some of them are working with the police to give information to help catch criminals, while others are working with the government.

Syed Kaleem Imam, the Inspector General of the Sindh Police, shared that the province of Sindh will help its people serve their duty by providing them opportunities and that it was high time more chances were created for them.

The number of transgender people in Pakistan

As of the unofficial census of 2017, there are around 10,400 plus transgender people in Pakistan, a country of 207 million people, but according to Charity Trans Action Pakistan, there are at least 500,000.

Reem Sharif is not the only well-known transgender person in the country. Earlier, Marvia Malik, a Pakistani transgender newsreader, and media figure, won the spotlight after becoming a prominent part of the media. She made her debut not too long ago in 2018 and has become an inspiration for all other members of her community.

Brandsynario wishes Reem Sharif all the very best and hopes people like Reem and Marvia get the best of opportunities.

Coronavirus: How Are Pakistani Brands Advertising During The Pandemic?

Lifebuoy

The coronavirus pandemic has engulfed the world. In these testing times, it has become difficult for brands to advertise and run campaigns. Brands have had to strategize and plan accordingly, as brand managers and agencies are not prepared for this situation.

The marketers that would shine during this time would be the ones that handle the coronavirus according to their brands sensitively and promptly. The international brand, Louis Vuitton, announced it would start producing ‘Sanitisers’ and giving them out free of cost to the French authorities, schools, and hospitals in the country’s fight against coronavirus.

Pakistani brands immersing themselves in responsible marketing during the pandemic are:

1. Lifebuoy

It makes sense for them as a brand to be working at this time as it is the need of the hour. Doctors advise washing hands as the best precaution against the COVID-19. The hygiene brand is working with the Sindh Government to raise awareness on washing hands and maintaining hygiene.

The brand recently posted these steps for Fighting Against Coronavirus.

Notice that they mention names of competing brands as well instead of solely promoting Lifebuoy soap.

2. Dettol

Dettol put out a public service message in collaboration with Pakistan’s Ministry of Health to encourage the washing of hands and overall hygiene to battle coronavirus. The campaign stars, Fahad Mustafa, who talks about using regular soap or sanitizers to keep hands clean.

3. foodpanda

The online food delivery service brand, foodpanda, is working in collaboration with Lifebuoy and has put up mobile washbasins outside public places and outside restaurants that are part of their network. This CSR activity is one that is needed as passersby will benefit significantly from this.

Bionic Film’s Surf Excel Advertisement Wins Hearts Across the Sub-continent

surf excel - brandsynario

Visit any of the big Pakistan marketing forums on social media, and you will read on common complaint: the quality of advertisements that are being made locally.

Though the recently released Surf Excel Ramzan advertisement was shot by a Pakistani production house Bionic Films and it has been going viral all over the subcontinent. It has been shot wonderfully and hits all the right notes at this time of global crisis.

What’s more, it was shot in Pakistan. The first time in a number of years, the South Asia Pacific Team of Unilever decided to shoot their Ramzan Commercial in Pakistan. Given the love and appreciation it has garnered across Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and the UAE, this might be the start of something big.

The credit, of course, goes to Bionic Films. Given the circumstances, things would have been extremely challenging. A misstep here and a lot of the blame would have gone towards the brand. However, their team followed all the SOPs for the shoot of the commercial. Locations were disinfected before and after the shoot. Team Bionic clearly rose to the challenge.

Bionic Film’s Surf Excel Advertisement Wins Hearts Across the Sub-continent

Technically sound and shot in a slick manner, what connects and resonates most is the emotion behind it. Surf Excel is a household name. So the more comfortable option would have been to focus on the brand only. Given the circumstances, it would have been acceptable to make a run of the mill advertisement. However, the creative team decided to take a more personal approach. In these testing times, everyone around us needs to feel that connection.

While speaking to Salman Farooqi, the person spearheading Bionic – we asked him how was it possible for them to make this happen? He said, “Fortune favours the brave… When the client trusts you, respect you as their business partner and not only just as a production house, and work with you as one team, then you take the challenge for them no matter what the circumstances are and you achieve what seems to be impossible…”

While the concept is simple, it is highly poignant. Ramzan is all about patience, sacrifice, and togetherness. These values are shared across cultures and nations. Hence it is no surprise that it has worked for a diverse audience. A message of hope is the need of the hour.

3 Ways How COVID-19 Is Affecting Digital Advertising

Source: Forbes

The lockdowns due to COVID-19 have caused a substantial economic impact. The only saving grace during this pandemic is the availability of the internet and the increased connectivity, which has helped various businesses to remain operating despite not being able to open up their shops physically. Although the coronavirus is a considerable threat to businesses and jobs, digital marketing has leaped forward as a result of it.

Digital marketing has become the number one medium to reach consumers. Billboards that are usually the most popular form of advertising are now standing amid empty streets. Advertising promotional events are not being held, and neither are people buying magazines or newspapers. Digital advertising is right now the quickest and best way to reach out to consumers as people are always online. Moreover, the chances of your social media ad being seen are much higher than ever before.

Source: Adespresso

However, even after digital being the medium in focus right now, a report by PG Media Brands Magna highlights the impact COVID-19 will have on the digital advertising industry.

The report suggests,

“Digital media ad formats will be the least impacted due to the acceleration of digital media usage and eCommerce during the outbreak. However, global digital advertising is likely to slow down to single-digit growth this year, compared to +20% per year in recent years.”

Here’s how digital advertising is being impacted due to COVID-19

1. Decreased Spending on Digital Ads

Even though people are always online, the spending power has come to a halt. More so, impulse buying is no longer an option for many. Due to this, many businesses are thinking about spending on online ads as their target market may see the ads. However, there could very well be no outcome in the form of a sale from it.

Source: The Economic Times

2. Businesses are focused on Engagement instead of Conversion

Digital spending has always been driven by companies looking to convert buyers towards their products or services. However, during times like this, where everyone is just buying the basics, firms have started building campaigns.

These campaigns are aimed at engaging with its customers and to create awareness for their brand simply. This may not prove to be beneficial now, but it is in the long run as there are more people online now than ever, and a good engagement between consumers and brands would lead to a conversion (sales) later on.

3. Lack of Competition Between Brands

There are fewer brands spending on advertisements; many campaigns have been called off-air; some have been halted before being released and may stay that way until things start getting back to normal.

How do you think COVID-19 has impacted digital advertising? Let us know in the comments below.

Saadat Hasan Manto is being celebrated today with a Google doodle on his 108th birthday. He was born into a middle-class Muslim family in Ludhiana in 1912. In his early 20s, he translated Russian, French, and English short stories into Urdu, and through studying the work of western writers, he learned the art of short story writing, which he usually wrote in one sitting.

Manto’s short stories often exposed the bitter truth of a society that was at its worst after partition. His short stories highlight the victims who were faced with brutalities during and after the partition period.

Here are 5 of Saadat Hasan Manto’s Best Short Stories You Definitely Should Read:

1. Mishtake

This was initially titled ‘Sorry’ in Urdu and is only one paragraph long. This story is about a murder committed and highlights how insensitive and irrational people were during that time.

2. The Assignment

This is a saga of love, lust, hatred, meaningless violence, and cruelty that is all carried out in the name of religion. The Assignment is one of Manto’s darkest stories ever, and it shows us an insight to the wretched paradox of religious hatred and sentiments.

3. Kaali Shalwar

This is a story that revolves around a small-town prostitute called Sultana and her time in Bombay. It is a heartwrenching saga of identities, disillusionment, and relationships. An Indian film by Fareeda Mehta, based on this story, was also released in 2002.

4. Thanda Gosht

This is a haunting saga that will send shivers down your spine; it is a story of a Sikh man who, on his last breath, confesses to having taken advantage of a dead Muslim woman. The last line of the story is exceptionally thought-provoking and undoubtedly one of the best endings in Indian English Literature.
