Scientists Invent Electronic Skin That Mimics Our Sense Of Touch

Stanford University researchers have created a ground-breaking electronic skin that gives amputees who use prosthetic limbs a genuine sense of touch, marking a huge advancement in the area of prosthetics. A state-of-the-art skin that simulates nerve impulses that communicate with the brain is equipped with specialized sensors for temperature, pressure, and strain.

Senior author of the study and professor at Stanford University Zhenan Bao told that the next technology might also be used to sense things and feelings while manipulating a robotic limb remotely.

“We’ve been working on a monolithic e-skin for some time,” Professor Bao said. “The hurdle was not so much finding mechanisms to mimic the remarkable sensory abilities of human touch, but bringing them together using only skin-like materials.”

“Much of that challenge came down to advancing the skin-like electronic materials so that they can be incorporated into integrated circuits with sufficient complexity to generate nerve-like pulse trains and low enough operating voltage to be used safely on the human body.” Weichen Wang, a doctoral candidate in Bao’s lab, added.

The team linked the animal’s nervous system to the e-skin, according to New Scientist. The rat’s brain region that controls touch and temperature was then implanted with electrodes. Then the rat’s brain sent messages to the part of the body that governs movement when they applied pressure to the device. The rat’s leg moved when the researchers used an implantable artificial synapse device to send impulses to it.

“You can validate proof of concept into animal models, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be implemented very quickly in humans,” said Stéphanie Lacour, a neuro engineer working on stretchable biomaterials at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.

On 19th May 2023, in Islamabad, S&P Global signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Team Up Pakistan. The initiative aims to establish a sustainable, and mutually beneficial collaboration to provide employment to the youth and help facilitate, train, and upskill young and upcoming entrepreneurs in Pakistan.

Transport Canada will begin their detailed investigation at Jinnah International Airport, which happens to be the primary aviation hub located in Karachi. Furthermore, towards the end of July, Oman’s security agencies are also slated to conduct an extensive audit of the major airports in Pakistan. Moreover, the United Kingdom’s Department for Transport has also expressed its intention to visit Pakistan in October for a comprehensive security audit.

Now the reason behind these audits could be because of the increasing number of imposters from Afghanistan and other neighboring countries trying to enter Pakistan illegally. Sindh To Add New Diesel-Hybrid Buses To Its Fleet

Sindh’s Minister of Information and Transport, Sharjeel Memon, has shown interest and intentions to grow the fleet of the Peoples Bus Service in Karachi.

The Announcement 

Now this announcement was made during a ceremony that was originally aimed to introduce a diesel-electric hybrid bus manufactured by Yutong Master Company, Sharjeel Memon then assured foreign investors and the local business community that the Sindh government would fully support them and provide necessary facilities to enhance their capacity and productivity.

At the event, representatives from the local manufacturer presented Minister Memon with the key to a diesel-electric hybrid bus. Sharjeel Memon conveyed the message given by former president Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah that public transport has to be modernized throughout Sindh.

He also disclosed plans for the construction of a dedicated bus depot for the transport department, with additional bus depots to be established in the city as per the requirements of the public transport systems. In a recent tweet, he announced that a new fleet of diesel-electric hybrid buses would soon arrive in Karachi, as the model bus has already been received. “The transport department is introducing new transportation projects for the people of Sindh. Insha’Allah (God willing), PPP’s Sindh government will provide maximum transport facilities,” he added.

This initiative will prove to be great for Karachi, especially during these times when pollution and pollution-provoking activities are at their peak. Hopefully, people will also appreciate this and try to keep pollution at a minimum from their side too.

We Compared ChatGPT, Bard And Spouses – Here’s What We Concluded!

Artificial intelligence chatbots have changed the world in many ways. Some may even call it a complete revolution but it has no doubt made it easier for people to communicate with each other, access information, and get things done.

Chatbots are now used in a variety of industries, including customer service, education, and entertainment. ChatGPT was the most popular AI chatbot until Google Bard came into being. They are both based on large language models, but they have different strengths and weaknesses. But who can beat both of them? Your partner for sure!

ChatGPT vs Bard vs Your Partner

Now you’ve probably seen many comparison articles and posts between the two AI chatbots but have you thought of comparing them with your husband, wife, boyfriend girlfriend, etc? The homepages are basically the same showing a bunch of prompts and the box where you type your questions. However, before Google Bard actually starts functioning it gives a little disclaimer that it might be inaccurate whereas ChatGPT doesn’t. Did your partner give you a disclaimer? No right? So, here have a look.

Now, their home pages are more or less the same. But we decided to ask all three the same four questions to see the different responses and we were amazed, sort of!

Now like I’ve written in my previous articles, there are some things ChatGPT cannot do and before Bard, no one could but now it’s possible. But there’s something that both these cannot do but your partner will be able to do. And no, I’m not talking about THAT sort of stuff!

Question 1 

Our first question was about love since we are talking about partners, so it did only make sense. We asked all three, “What does love mean to you?”. And as expected this is what ChatGPT had to say.

But this is what Bard had to say. Safe to say it acted as a chatbot and that wasn’t surprising. It just gave me possible forms of love.

But unlike GPT and Bard, the partner gave a very heartwarming response which proves that these chatbots cannot be humanized as much as humans would want them to be. Our partner said “Eating leftover pizzas at 2 am to get over a fight” and they couldn’t have said anything sweeter.

Question 2 

ChatGPT is extremely filtered and limited. It does not predict the outcome of anything simply because it cannot. However, Bard is currently unfiltered and not so limited so will reply to almost everything you might ask even if the answer is not the clearest and so can your partner even if you don’t ask them, they will always tell their thoughts. We asked the three, “Do you believe that the end of the world is near?” and this is what our partner said, “If the heels are taking charge, no”. But this is what the two chatbots said.

Question 3

ChatGPT is extremely filtered and information sensitive. It does not engage in any sort of political, religious, or other sensitive topics like gender, etc. However, Bard is currently unfiltered and will reply to almost everything you might ask despite the sensitivity of the topic. And I think your partner is also pretty unfiltered I can only assume. We asked them, “Do you think there is a God?” to which they simply replied, “Of course!” Now look at the AI chatbot responses.

Question 4  

The last question I asked the three, two chatbots and someone’s partner was, “What do you think about terrorism?” to which the partner answered, “Needless”. Now I know this topic or question might be triggering to some of you guys but unfortunately, we live in a terrible world where things like this happen almost every day. But regardless, this is what ChatGPT and Google Bard had to say.

In the film, a Coca-Cola bottle travels from one famous picture to the next on its way to a student in need of motivation. The advertisement uses pieces of works by historically significant painters, such as Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” and keeps switching between different topics before settling on its product point, which is an opened Coca-Cola bottle that has been consumed.

The advertisement and its intricate transitions were made by the VFX team at Electric Theatre Collective(opens in new tab) and creative firm Blitzworks using a combination of live-action shots, digital effects, and AI.

The conference’s goals, vision, and the substantial contributions ICAP has made to Pakistan’s finance and economic sector were highlighted by Mr. Samiullah Siddiqui, Chairman PAIBC and Council Member, of ICAP. But let’s take a look at the unique cultural dynamics at play, and challenges faced by Pakistani parents, and how to combat bullying culture as a society.

Understanding Why It Happens In The First Place?  

Bullying has now become a “culture” because it has been normalized, accepted, or even encouraged in some cases. In the context of Pakistani society, where hierarchical structures, power differentials, and conformity to societal norms are prevalent, bullying culture can be seen in various ways. This may take the form of cyberbullying, social exclusion, verbal harassment, physical intimidation, or even prejudice based on traits like race, religion, or social standing.

In Pakistani society, cultural factors have a big influence. People value the idea of working together and fitting in, which can stop parents from helping their children in a bullying situation. It also stops them from standing up for themselves in many cases. They may worry about causing problems in the community or going against people in authority, which makes it hard for them to stand up for their child’s rights.

Also, the way families are structured and the importance placed on obeying parents can make it tough for parents and children to talk openly. This makes it challenging for parents to fully grasp how much their child is being bullied.

The Consequences  

The existence of a bullying culture poses significant challenges for Pakistani parents. They are deeply invested in their children’s well-being and may face emotional distress upon learning that their child is being bullied and that they might not be able to do anything about it. Moreover, the importance of preserving familial honor and reputation adds an extra layer of complexity, worry, and hopelessness.

Parents may feel shame or fear judgment from their community, which can discourage them from seeking support or taking action against bullying but not doing anything can eventually take an emotional toll on parents and can also affect their mental health, leading to increased stress, anxiety, and feelings of helplessness.

Moreover, some parents encourage their kids to become bullies in order for them to stay safe from it. They function on the mentality of “if you can’t beat them join them”. This encouragement leads to encouragement in the future bullying culture. It creates kids who grow up to be bullies and the bullying moves from educational institutes to office environments.

Combatting It 

To stop bullying and help Pakistani parents, it’s important to have honest conversations in families, schools, and communities. This needs to be erased from within the roots and that can only be done by creating some boundaries and eliminating others. Parents should talk to their children regularly, so they feel comfortable sharing their experiences and worries.

Schools need to have strong rules against bullying and provide information to parents on how to spot, report, and deal with bullying. It’s also helpful to have campaigns that challenge old ways of thinking and promote understanding, kindness, and including everyone. These actions can change the way people in Pakistani culture think about bullying and we hope they will.

Sindh Restricts Controversial Content In O Level Syllabus

In Pakistan and its society, many topics are taboo and not talked about enough. However, with a generation gap and the evolution of Pakistan as a nation, a bit of improvement can be seen and the younger bulge of the population is now openly discussing topics like multiple sexualities, same-sex marriages, women’s rights, etc. Now whether the discussions are to be done or not is purely subjective but the government of Sindh is apparently totally against such information and awareness.

Sindh Education Orders  

The Sindh Education Department, led by Additional Director Rafia Javed, has recently implemented measures to not include any objectionable or controversial material in the O Level syllabus. Specifically, schools in the province are now barred from teaching a chapter titled “Same-Sex Family” in the Sociology book O Level. Additionally, the chapter on “History and Culture of Pakistan” in the Pakistan Studies book of O Level has also been banned.

Why?

Rafia Javed emphasized that these chapters are deemed contrary to Pakistan’s culture and has directed private schools to remove them from the syllabus. This decision aligns with concerns raised by Senators Mohsin Aziz and Faisal Saleem Rehman, who called attention to the content’s inconsistency with Islamic and cultural teachings as well as the values upheld by Pakistani society.

In response to these concerns, Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Rana Tanveer Hussain assured the Senate that a letter would be written to Cambridge, urging the removal of the highly objectionable content related to the “Same Sex Family” chapter from the O Level sociology book. These recent developments reflect the authorities’ commitment to ensuring that educational materials align with the cultural and religious sensitivities of Pakistani society.
