IMF Declines Request For Lower Electricity Rates

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has firmly turned down Pakistan’s request for relief in high electricity rates for distressed citizens. Despite the federal government’s claim that electricity bill collections for August aligned with expectations, the IMF has ruled out any possibility of adjusting tariffs or providing additional subsidies.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has put forth another proposal to spread out the upcoming quarterly tariff adjustments (QTAs) and Fuel Price Adjustments (FPAs) of Rs. 7.50 per unit over the next four to six months. Issues in the power sector persist, with an urgent need for QTAs to be raised by Rs. 5 per unit this month and FPAs by Rs. 2.72 per unit. This totals to an anticipated increase of over Rs. 7 per unit.

The QTAs will be calculated based on losses incurred from April to June due to low consumption, high-interest payments, and currency devaluation.The planned FPA increase will account for rising fuel prices, potentially resulting in a Rs. 7.50 per unit hike in the September bill if approved by NEPRA.

Combining QTAs and FPAs, electricity costs for consumers using 400 units would decrease from Rs. 21,000 in August 2023 to Rs. 16,963 in September and further to Rs. 11,356 in October, according to calculations for various consumer groups.

For those using 300 units, charges would decrease from Rs. 13,000 in August to Rs. 10,000 in September and Rs. 8,000 in October 2023. Additionally, the government has requested NEPRA to consider seasonal trends when calculating future tariff adjustments.

In a recent episode of her blog Outstyle with Nadia, actress, and host Nadia Khan recently talked to her media fellows to discuss a constant change in utility bills and rates.

Amongst the actresses, Fiza Ali, Nida Yasir, and Sadia Imam shared their thoughts on the rising inflation and increasing living expenses.

Sadia Imam shared an electricity bill with the host which turned out to be a whooping 67k. The actress mentioned that she has now installed a solar panel at her home after which the monthly bill came out to be 19k.

Nida Yasir’s electricity bill came out to be 100k. The actress said. Adding that the bill amount was for only 15 days since they were out on vacation for the rest of the month. Nida also mentioned that she has stopped using the AC after recovering such heavy bills and since being an adult she is the one to have to be responsible since kids don’t care much.

While sharing her electricity bill Fiza Ali mentioned that she and her daughter don’t have the habit of sleeping in AC, yet her bill came out to be 67k. She further added that her last bill was for 100k even though she was in Dubai for a whole month.

The actresses further mentioned their fuel consumption rate and the amount they have to pay for petrol to run their daily errands was also in the hundreds of thousands. While getting benefits from the TV channels social media stars are still not immune to the daunting skyrocketing inflation.

England Introduces Quick ‘Seven-Minute’ Cancer Treatment

An injection that cures cancer in seven minutes will be given to patients for the first time in England.

The NHS will be the first healthcare system to introduce the injection to hundreds of patients annually after receiving permission from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Some NHS cancer patients’ drug treatment periods will be slashed by up to 75%.

Patients typically receive atezolizumab via an IV drip, but many of them will now receive the immunotherapy as an injection.

Cancer – Targeted Injections

The medication also referred to as Tecentriq, cures several malignancies, including bladder, lung, breast, and liver tumors. In England, roughly 3,600 patients receive it annually.

Instead of receiving it intravenously, which typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. It will now likely be administered to the majority of these patients via a seven-minute injection.

Atezolizumab may still be administered intravenously to patients who also receive chemotherapy. As a checkpoint inhibitor, the medication aids the immune system in locating and eliminating cancer cells.

Prof. Peter Johnson, national director for cancer at NHS England, said the action showed how a health system that prioritizes innovation can provide patients with the most cutting-edge cancer treatments.

“The “world-first” rollout of the treatment will mean “hundreds of patients can spend less time at the hospital and will free up valuable time in NHS chemotherapy units”, NHS England’s national director for cancer Professor Peter Johnson said.

“Maintaining the best possible quality of life for cancer patients is vital, so the introduction of faster under-the-skin injections will make an important difference.” He added.

Hareem Shah's Husband Disappears Post-London Flight

Hareem Shah, a popular TikTok star, revealed that her husband, Bilal Shah, went missing after returning to Karachi from London. Hareem claimed in a video statement that her husband was “kidnapped for unknown reasons.” However, Bilal’s family stated that he was being questioned due to Hareem’s social media posts.

Hareem and Bilal had been in London for about two months, following Hareem’s legal case against another TikToker. Bilal returned to Karachi from London eight days ago and disappeared two days after arriving.

Reports from Karachi suggest that Bilal informed investigators that Hareem was not managing her Twitter account directly but had allowed someone else to operate it.

Hareem appealed to law enforcement agencies to locate her husband, emphasizing that he was not involved in politics, activism, or any criminal activities. A petition has been filed in the Sindh High Court against Bilal’s alleged “illegal detention” by law enforcement personnel.

Hareem had previously faced an inquiry by the Federal Investigation Agency for a social media video in which she claimed to have easily cleared immigration with a large amount of foreign currency. An FIR (First Information Report) has been registered with the police regarding Bilal Shah’s disappearance, initiated by his mother, who reported that her son was taken on August 27, along with his car, by “unknown persons.”
