How Did Naseem Shah Influence Islamabad United To Pick His Brothers?

naseem-shah-influence-islamabad-united-to-pick-his-brothers

The PSL 9 will be the first time a franchise team featuring three brothers as Naseem Shah and his two brothers are part of Islamabad United.

Islamabad United picked Naseem Shah’s brothers, Hunain Shah and Ubaid Shah, during PSL 9 Draft, aligning them in the same colors their star fast bowler adorns.

Hunain, aged 20, recognized for his active participation in domestic cricket over the past two years, while Ubaid’s prowess in junior-level cricket and standout performance in the ongoing U19 Asia Cup earned him his place.

This marks a historic moment in PSL history as the trio of Shah brothers congregate within a single team, sparking anticipation about the possibility of witnessing them playing together on the field.

Dismissing any insinuation of favoritism or influence, Naseem Shah addressed the media in Lahore, asserting, “I am not the chief selector; I cannot bring my brothers into the team.”

He emphasized their merit, highlighting their individual efforts and dedication that earned them recognition in the cricketing sphere.

Hunain Shah has played 14 T20 matches and picked 17 wickets at 21.88. Meanwhile Ubaid Shah has picked 14 wickets from six one-day games at under-19 level.

Transitioning from Quetta Gladiators to Islamabad United in the recent draft, Naseem expressed his optimism for the upcoming season, acknowledging the novelty of the new team while hoping for a successful outing in season nine.

Reflecting on the challenges ahead, the young pacer acknowledged the competitive nature of the league, particularly citing the difficulty of making a comeback post-injury. “We’ll face formidable batters in PSL, presenting a compelling challenge for bowlers,” he added, emphasizing the test that awaits him and his teammates.

PSL 9 Set To Kick Off In February Across Four Cities

which-team-made-the-most-of-psl-supplementary-draft

The highly anticipated HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 is slated to kick off from February 17 to March 17, 2024, spanning across four vibrant cities: Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Multan.

Lahore is proposed to host the electrifying opening ceremony and several matches, while the grand finale is earmarked for Karachi, promising an intense culmination to PSL 9.

Sources close to the organizing body have revealed the intricate challenges in finalizing the schedule, primarily stemming from the inclusion of doubleheaders.

The decision predates Ramadan, yet the cricket board faces hurdles, particularly concerning the Karachi stadium’s lower turnout during single matches. Anticipations suggest the venue might face similar attendance woes during doubleheaders. Discussions persist, aiming to address this concern before promptly releasing the definitive schedule.

Meanwhile, the PSL 9 draft witnessed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) boosting franchises’ budgets by 8 crores rupees. Each team now possesses a formidable 35 crores rupees to strategize their player acquisitions.

Notably, this financial adjustment transpired without seeking input from the team owners, marking a unilateral decision by the PCB.

Interestingly, despite suggestions to renegotiate contracts with Pakistani players in rupees instead of dollars, no substantial action has been taken.

Franchises have opted to abstain from raising objections, wary of potential player dissatisfaction, leading to a status quo on this front.

Ahmed Shahzad Becomes The First Player To Quit PSL

ahmed-shahzad-bids-farewell-to-psl

Ahmed Shahzad, has become the first player to take retirement for one particular franchise cricket league today.

He announced to bid farewell to the Pakistan Super League (PSL), following the PSL 9 Draft where he remained unpicked.

Expressing disappointment, Ahmed Shahzad cited his non-selection by the PSL franchises as a primary reason for his exit. “I’m parting ways and saying goodbye to Pakistan Super League for my own self-respect. I’ve never played for money and will never do it,” Shahzad conveyed via X (formerly Twitter).

He emphasized his decision was devoid of monetary considerations. He reiterated his commitment to the national cause over lucrative foreign leagues.

Making a poignant announcement, Shahzad declared his stance regarding future PSL participation. “I will not play the PSL again with these six teams. It seems like a shared responsibility to keep me away from PSL, and all franchises have shaken hands,” he expressed.

Expressing gratitude towards his global fan base, Shahzad vowed to remain steadfast in refusing compromises that could undermine his loyalty to his country.

“Lastly, I’m thankful to all the support I’ve received from my fans across the world. I can only assure one thing and that’s never giving in to unfair demands or accept anything which lets my country down.”

Furthermore, Shahzad highlighted his consistent performance in domestic cricket, accusing PSL franchises of purposefully excluding him from the PSL.

“There seems a deliberate effort to keep me out, even when franchises have opted for other performers with inferior numbers than me. But when everything is pre-planned so it doesn’t really matter. I don’t know whose responsibility it is to get top domestic performers in the PSL then,” he added.

Notably, Ahmed Shahzad amassed 344 runs at a remarkable average of 43 and a striking strike rate of 133.33 in the National T20 Cup.

On top of that, many journalists and his fans ran campaigns across social media for his inclusion in PSL as well as Pakistan’s national team. However, all efforts failed to convince franchise owners as nobody bid to pick him.

Shahzad concluded by hinting at unveiling the reasons behind his exclusion. He also promised his supporters and the nation clarity on the matter in the near future.

Finance Professionals Should Take Lead On Public Sector Risk Management In Era Of Great Challenges

ACCA

Lahore, December 14, 2023: Top risks facing public sector organisations are financial challenges and an inability to meet changing demands and expectations of the public for services. A global survey of finance professionals and others working in the public sector showed a key part of the global economy wrestling with significant risks, while not always having the tools to cope.

The research, drawing on responses from those working in a range of roles across the public sector – finance, risk, audit and service delivery – found that, for their own organisations, they were worried about funding for public services and the ability to meet the evolving demands of delivering services, as well as finding the people with the right talent and skills.

In ACCA’s survey the following five risks were highlighted as the most significant risks facing respondents’ organisations (percentage figures represent the proportion of respondents identifying the risk as one of their ‘top three’)

  • Financial challenges – 49%
  • Meeting changing demands and expectations for services – 35%
  • Talent and skills deficit – 35%
  • Poor organisational culture – 28%
  • Ineffective leadership – 26%.

In response to the challenges facing the public sector, ACCA’s new guide Calculated Risk makes the case for finance professionals taking a leading role in the risk management process. Despite the skills finance professionals possess, the survey showed that many public sector organisations are not making effective use of their capabilities in risk management. For example, only just over half of respondents (55%) who work in the finance function said they were regularly involved in identifying and reviewing relevant operational risks.

Mark Johnson, ACCA senior subject manager for the public sector, said: ‘Some public sector organisations are neglecting the valuable insight of staff working on the frontline. Identifying risk is a two-way process: organisations need to be made aware of any risks that are not already formally identified and those working in services are often in the best place to identify such risks. Using the knowledge and expertise of staff working in each part of an organisation to build up a profile of risk is critical for a comprehensive understanding of risk.’

Read Calculated Risk: An introduction to finance professionals’ role in understanding risk and building resilience in the public sector

In an era where the outlook for public finances is challenging the public sector needs to move away from business as usual if it is to successfully negotiate the significant risks it faces. The finance function is well-placed to recognise risks across the organisation and support leaders in addressing these risks. Ultimately resilience in organisation is built by developing skills and capabilities.  Public sector finance professionals who understand the threats and opportunities posed by risk can help build more resilient public services.

Editor’s Note

Findings are based on an April 2023 survey of 436 public sector professional in over 60 countries worldwide. Almost 9 in 10 were ACCA members or students working in finance, risk, audit policy and service delivery roles.

Meta’s Ray-Ban Glasses Now Mimic Your Sight With AI

Source: Fox News

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has taken a bold leap into the future with its latest innovation in wearable technology. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the iconic Ray-Ban glasses marks a revolutionary advancement that allows users to experience the world in an entirely new way. The glasses, equipped with cameras and generative AI capabilities, represent a significant leap forward in technological evolution.

Bing-Powered Search and Voice-Enabled Features

During demonstrations at Meta’s New York headquarters, the glasses showcased their AI-powered feature by identifying caffeine-free teas among a selection of obscured packets. The response from Meta’s AI was swift and accurate, utilizing generative AI to deduce the contents of the tea packets, a feature announced earlier by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and slated for release in 2024.

The glasses now offer Bing-powered search functionalities, enhancing the existing voice-enabled features and showcasing Meta’s commitment to rapid innovation. However, the glasses do not feature a display but respond audibly, providing immediate feedback to user queries.

Beyond Novelty to Real-World Utility

Despite these impressive capabilities, limitations persist in this unnexplored technology. The AI’s image recognition operates through photo analysis, prompting a few seconds delay between voice commands and responses. Additionally, the verbose “Hey, Meta, look” initiation for each query feels somewhat cumbersome, signaling room for improvement in streamlining the user experience.

The glasses’ potential applications extend far beyond novelty. From aiding in daily tasks to potentially assisting individuals with visual impairments, Meta’s glasses hold promise. Despite occasional inaccuracies, such as misidentifying items or misinterpreting scenes, the glasses offer a glimpse into a future where AI seamlessly integrates into everyday life.

Meta acknowledges this early launch as an opportunity to refine and enhance on-glasses AI capabilities, acknowledging the need to address glitches and streamline user interactions. While the process may require refinement, the glasses innitiate a new era of wearable technology that promises a transformational experience, exposing us further into an AI-infused world.

However, there’s no need for despair, as Google has devised a seamless transition plan for affected users.

If you’re one of the concerned users, dont worry – your movies and TV shows won’t vanish into thin air. Google assures that all purchased content will find its new home either on YouTube or Android TV. The migration process will be automatic, ensuring a hassle-free shift for users.

For users utilizing Android TV-powered devices, finding your purchased titles post-January 17th will be a breeze. Simply navigate to the ‘Shop’ tab under ‘Your Library.’ Similarly, if you’re using a cable or set-top box operated by Android TV, your content will seamlessly shift to the YouTube app, conveniently accessible under the ‘Purchased’ tab within the Movies & TV section.

Renting films via YouTube

The transition will also be smooth for web browser users. Your purchased content will be available on YouTube, just as it was on the Play Movies & TV app. However, it’s essential to note that not all countries have the privilege of purchasing or renting films via YouTube. Google advises users in affected regions to verify the availability of these services in their respective countries.

Cricket Fans Troll Pakistan For Dismal Start To 1st Test Against Australia

cricket-fans-troll-pakistan-test-against-australia

Pakistan team’s tour opener in Australia took a dire turn as the hosts dominated the first session of the 1st Test in Perth, leaving the visitors struggling at lunch. The Australian openers, David Warner and Usman Khawaja, took full advantage of Pakistan’s erratic bowling, steering their side to a commanding 117/0 after 25 overs.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the Australian duo exploited some inconsistent deliveries, especially targeting star pacer Shaheen Afridi. Playing his final Test series, Warner capitalized on loose balls, concluding the morning session unbeaten on a brisk 72 off 67 deliveries.

Pakistan, eyeing their maiden series win on Australian soil, missed a crucial opportunity when Abdullah Shafique dropped a catch off Khawaja’s bat. Meanwhile, Warner seems poised for yet another big score, aiming for his sixth Test century against Pakistan, following his memorable 163(124) in the recent World Cup clash.

The 37-year-old batsman, who notched his highest Test score of 335* in Adelaide during Pakistan’s last tour in 2019, appears determined to maintain his dominance against the Pakistani bowling attack.

Lacking a specialist spinner in the playing XI, Pakistan’s pace battery might face a challenging and laborious stint, potentially impacting the series’ trajectory. The team, under Shan Masood’s captaincy debut, faces an uphill task to regroup and counter the Australian onslaught throughout the day and the Test match.

Cricket Fans React To Pakistan vs Australia

Fans on X (formerly Twitter), not unfamiliar with Pakistan’s historical struggles on Australian tours, were quick to express their dismay over the team’s performance. Here’s a glimpse of some of the notable reactions from the cricketing community:

Surprising Players Who Went Unpicked In PSL 9 Draft

The curtain fell on the PSL 9 Draft in Lahore yesterday, marking the assembly of teams striving for that perfect blend. Yet, amid the buzz and fanfare, some astounding omissions left cricket aficionados in disbelief. Several renowned names, despite their recent prowess, surprisingly, remained on the shelves, awaiting a bid that never came.

Ahmed Shehzad

Ahmed Shehzad, the seasoned top-order batsman, had turned heads with his sterling performance in the National T20 Cup, amassing 344 runs at a remarkable average of 43 and a striking strike rate of 133.33. Despite the chatter and social media hype, no franchise extended their hand to acquire his services, a decision that left many scratching their heads in astonishment.

Source: PCB

Sharjeel Khan

Sharjeel Khan, another aggressive opener, faced a similar fate. After being released by Karachi Kings pre-draft, the 34-year-old found himself without a bidder. Despite a stellar run in the Pakistan Cup, finishing as the third-highest run-scorer with 344 runs at a staggering average of 57.33, his subdued performance in the National T20 Cup seemed to overshadow his credentials, leaving him unsold.

Source: PCB

Rahmanullah Gurbaz

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the explosive Afghan top-order batter, also faced the unexpected outcome of remaining unpicked in the PSL 9 Draft. His ability to single-handedly shift the momentum of a game in just a few overs had many hoping for his recruitment. His past PSL performances for Multan Sultans and Islamabad United showcased his prowess, but the draft night offered no takers, leaving the cricketing world puzzled.

Source: Cricinfo

Qais Ahmed

Qais Ahmed, the 23-year-old leg-spinner, had a stint with Quetta Gladiators in the previous season. Despite being released for a lacklustre performance, his global franchise cricket experience seemed like a valuable asset. Notably, his stellar performance in the T10 League, topping the charts with 16 wickets in 9 games, made his unsold status in the PSL 9 Draft a head-scratcher for many.

While these notable absences surprised the cricketing fraternity, the teams remain robust, blending local talent with global stars to craft balanced line-ups for an enthralling PSL season ahead.

Gautam Gambhir Believes Babar Azam Will Retire As ‘Pakistan’s Greatest Batter’

gautam-gambhir-believes-babar-azam-end-as-pakistan-greatest-batter

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir believes that Babar Azam will eventually become Pakistan’s greatest batter by the time of his retirement. Gambhir highlighted Babar’s unwavering credentials as a batsman, emphasizing that stepping down from captaincy could unveil the best of Babar in that role.

After a lacklustre World Cup 2023 campaign, Babar Azam relinquished his captaincy across all formats. The team failed to qualify for the semi-finals, while Babar had a mixed run with the bat, scoring 320 runs in nine innings with four fifties. However, many cricket experts believe that his decision to relinquish leadership responsibilities might pave the way for his batting prowess to shine.

Gautam Gambhir during an interview with an Indian publisher stated, “It’s an individual choice of players to leave or accept captaincy. Babar Azam is still a top-quality batter for me. We might get to see the best of Babar Azam now. In Pakistan, all the blame as well as the appreciation only goes to the captain. It happens to an extent in India as well, but not to the level that it happens in Pakistan.”

Gambhir, aged 42, highlighted that relieving Babar Azam from captaincy pressure could enable him to play with greater liberty, ultimately benefiting both Babar and the Pakistan team.

“Babar Azam’s batting abilities were never in question. Doubts lingered over his captaincy. With this step aside, Babar is expected to ascend to new heights as a batsman. Presently, he’s among Pakistan’s premier batters. When Babar concludes his career, he’s poised to become Pakistan’s batting great. He has ample years ahead, around 10 perhaps, to continue excelling as a batsman. His potential is yet to be fully realized,” Gambhir remarked.

Babar Azam has so far amassed 3,772 runs in 49 Tests, 5,729 runs in 117 ODIs, and 3,485 runs in 104 T20Is respectively.

Redefining The SUV Market – Kudos To HAVAL Pakistan!

In September last year, SAZGAR Engineering Works of Pakistan, in collaboration with Great Wall Motors, China’s leading SUV manufacturer for over a decade, introduced Haval to the Pakistani market. Since its arrival, Haval has swiftly gained traction and established a strong foothold in the country’s automotive sector.

The HEV, Pakistan’s first locally assembled hybrid vehicle within the Haval range, has notably emerged as the most coveted vehicle among Pakistani consumers in the past year.

Recently, Haval unveiled its debut television commercial featuring the HEV, setting a new standard in Pakistani advertising. The commercial’s exceptional CGI quality truly are a treat to watch and rivals international standards of advertisements as it artfully connects HEV’s hybrid-electric capabilities with the sheer power of thunder!

The ad showcases the HEV’s remarkable attributes, boasting a robust 240 horsepower, 530Nm torque, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) safety features, and an impressive fuel efficiency of 20km/l.
