WHO Discovers Contaminated Medicinal Syrups From Pakistan

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently raised alarms after discovering a string of contaminated medicinal syrups and suspensions originating from Pharmix Laboratories in Pakistan. These tainted products, containing active ingredients to treat diverse health conditions, have been found in multiple countries across the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, South-East Asia, and the Western Pacific regions.

Ethylene Glycol Contamination

The primary contaminant identified in these medications is ethylene glycol, present in unacceptable levels, as stated by the WHO. This troubling discovery echoes previous alerts issued by the WHO concerning similarly contaminated medicines traced back to India and Indonesia. Tragically, these prior incidents were linked to the unfortunate deaths of approximately 300 children worldwide.

The initial detection of contamination occurred during a routine examination conducted by the Maldives Food and Drug Authority in November, notably in the Alergo syrup. Subsequent investigations confirmed this contamination, prompting swift action from health authorities.

Regulatory Measures and Company Response

Further inspections at Pharmix Laboratories by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan unveiled additional tainted products, prompting an immediate halt in the manufacturing of all oral liquid medicines by the company. A recall alert was swiftly issued in November for affected batches of Alergo syrup, Emidone suspension, Mucorid syrup, Ulcofin suspension, and Zincell syrup.

Despite no reported adverse events related to these Pakistan-made syrups, the WHO urges heightened vigilance and extensive testing of products manufactured by Pharmix Laboratories between December 2021 and December 2022. The affected products, intended to address allergies, coughs, and various health concerns, have contamination levels ranging from 0.62 percent to 0.82 percent—significantly surpassing the acceptable limit of 0.10 percent.

Notably, Alergo syrup has been found beyond Pakistan, detected in countries like Belize, Fiji, and Laos. However, swift regulatory actions have been undertaken in these nations to contain the spread of the tainted products.

KARACHI, December 12, 2023: Bank Alfalah, one of the largest commercial banks in Pakistan signed an agreement with Karandaaz to expand the female agent network in Pakistan. This partnership was signed in the presence of Karandaaz Chairperson Salim Raza, Bank Alfalah President and CEO Atif Bajwa, Karandaaz CEO Waqas ul Hasan, Group Head Digital Banking Group Muhammad Yahya Khan and other senior members of Bank Alfalah and Karandaaz.

The partnership aims to promote women’s financial inclusion in Pakistan and is aligned with the objectives of Karandaaz’s Women’s Financial Inclusion (WFI) programme. This collaboration is a significant step towards fostering economic empowerment and accessibility in the financial sector.

The focus of this strategic partnership is to scale up Bank Alfalah’s female agent network, specifically in the digital branchless banking realm, aiming to actively engage in providing services such as Home Remittance, G2P disbursements, e-commerce and QR transactions, money transfer, utility bill payment, and airtime-related transactions.

In line with the collaboration, Bank Alfalah will onboard female agents across various regions of the country and technically enable them with appropriate use such as remittances where our female customers will be more comfortable in getting serviced and sharing their phone numbers.

Karandaaz CEO Waqas ul Hasan added, “Our collaboration with Bank Alfalah underscores Karandaaz’s dedication to digitalization and financial inclusion with a gender lens. When we think about Rockstar, Grand Theft Auto is the game that comes to our mind first. It has been in the industry for quite a while now, and it only rising up. GTA 6 is the game that everyone is looking forward to, and it has now been announced. However, there is still some time until the game is released. The details in the game are extraordinary and you can never get bored of the random NPC events that take place all over the map. If Rockstar were to create a remake of a game, let it be of GTA 4.

3. Max Payne 4

The game that introduced the concept of bullet-time, Max Payne is a fan favorite. You can dive in quite a lot of directions, in slow motion, and shoot at your enemies. The first two games had quite a robust story and the third one had extraordinary game mechanics. If we were to experience a fourth one, it would certainly be an immersive game.

4. L.A Noire 2

L.A Noire, when it came out in 2011, brought about quite a lot of new technology. It featured a system where the faces of NPCs were mapped from actual people, and they had realistic expressions. The details in the game were quite a lot and people would love it Rockstar came out with a sequel. More cases for us to solve!
