Serena Williams Handed Worst Defeat of Her Career!

Serena Williams suffered the most lopsided loss of her career at the WTA San Jose event on Tuesday, losing the final 12 games in a shocking first-round upset to unseeded Johanna Konta.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner struggled mightily against the British No. 1 and former winner Konta, who crushed Williams 6-1, 6-0 in just 51 minutes on the main Stadium.

Williams, who was playing her first match since dropping the Wimbledon final, is trying to regain her top form after missing most of the 2017 season due to a pregnancy.

The 36-year-old Williams tried to shrug off the worst loss of her hall of fame career.

“I don’t know. I have so many things on my mind that I don’t have time to be shocked about a loss where I clearly wasn’t at my best,” she said.

Williams, who was seeded sixth, managed just nine winners against 25 unforced errors and had her serve broken six times.

She looked nothing like the player that dominated the Tour for years, winning 72 singles titles and earning more than $86 million in prize money.

“She obviously wasn’t playing her best level — nowhere near — so I tried to play the match on my terms and just do what I can out here,” Konta said.

Both women were playing their first match since Wimbledon, where Williams finished runner-up to Angelique Kerber and Konta lost in the second round to eventual quarter-finalist Dominika Cibulkova.

The loss to Konta comes just over a month after Williams complained that she is being discriminated against by the sport’s drug testing program because of the number of samples she is being asked to provide.

“Out of all the players it’s been proven I’m the one getting tested the most. Discrimination? I think so,” Williams wrote in a tweet.

Williams had won this tournament the last three times she played it in 2011, 2012 and 2014 and won her only previous meeting with Konta 6-2 6-3 in the 2017 Australian Open quarter-finals.

“I think she played better in this match than she did 18 months ago, so that’s a good thing for her,” said Williams.

– Beat both sisters –

Konta won her maiden WTA title at this event in 2016 when it was held in Stanford University, defeating Williams’ older sister Venus in the final.

Konta next faces Sofia Kenin, who earned an impressive win over qualifier Veronica Cepede Royg on Monday.

Konta played a superb match with 17 winners, nine unforced errors and won 83 percent of her first-serve points.

This was one of the biggest wins of her career but Konta said she won’t be celebrating too long because there is more work to do.

“I don’t believe in big bang moments, or magic moments where the fingers click and it all comes together,” she said.

“I believe in continuous hard work and every day perseverance, putting in the work and trusting the process.

“All this match has given me is the chance to play another one. I’m grateful for that opportunity and will work hard for another one.”

Uber Extends Insurance Coverage to Include Drivers Partners Across Pakistan

Uber has today announced it will provide all driver-partners, with an insurance product, known as ‘injury Protection’ across Pakistan in collaboration with Chubb Insurance, a global insurance leader.

Key to the product is the ability for drivers to be protected from the financial cost of injury, including medical expenses and lost earning opportunities up to certain limits if an accident takes place while driving on the Uber app. This announcement forms part of Uber’s global commitment to the driver-partner protection and the safety and security of its customers and will be funded by Uber at no cost to the driver.

Uber driver-partners, including those on the popular UberMoto and UberAuto, are automatically enrolled via an in-app message; from the moment they accept a trip or delivery request while driving to pick up a rider or on the way to a restaurant, and until the trip ends or delivery is completed. Participation is not compulsory, and partners are able to opt-out if they wish. All passengers are also automatically protected by the injury protection insurance.

Commenting on the partnership, Pierre Dimitri Gore Coty, Head of Uber for Europe Middle East and Africa stated,  “Driver-partners have told us that they enjoy the freedom of being their own boss and choosing if, when and where they drive. But they have also told us they want more security and the Injury Protection program is designed to provide Uber driver-partners with peace of mind while preserving the flexibility they value. We believe that we have an important role to play in empowering people to get access to quality economic opportunities and we are excited to have developed a leading insurance product for the ride-sharing industry here in Pakistan.”

“This collaboration with Uber to provide driver-partners with an innovative insurance product is part of our commitment to supporting efforts around digital transformation and providing consumers with peace of mind in emerging markets,” said Giles Ward, Regional President for Eurasia & Africa at Chubb Insurance

This new product covers all eligible driver-partners in Pakistan for major costs resulting from accidents or injuries that occur on the trip up to certain limits.

Injury Protection commences from 1 August 2018 and will instantly cover more than 50,000 active independent Uber driver-partners across Pakistan. This is an important step in addressing some of the biggest concerns raised by the driver-partners that use the Uber App.

The ride-hailing app continues to develop, collaborate and launch initiatives in an effort to provide more support to its driver-partners and riders in Pakistan and in other countries it operates. Some of these include facilitating anti-sexual harassment training and hosting listening tours to capture feedback and concerns from local community organizations.

Key trends from this leaderboard include:

  • Made for digital: Unlike in the offline world where space and time is limited, YouTube offers brands and agencies a creative canvas, allowing them as much or as little time as they need to tell their story in whatever form works best for their message. Long-form or short-form works equally well as long as they are engaging, and YouTube ads allow creativity to flow as the narrative requires.
  • Millennials spend time on YouTube: many of the ads are catered toward millennials, including those with strong female leads across the ads that populate the leaderboard.

“These trending ads and branded content are a reminder of the amazing creativity alive today in the Pakistani ads industry. These videos show that it’s not only new technology but also the ancient art of storytelling that creates a winning combination. YouTube offers brands a creative canvas to tell stories that resonate with consumers in whatever shape best fits them,” said Farhan Qureshi, Regional Head at Google Asia Pacific.

iPhone X Plus Image Leaked Online!

iPhone X Plus and its smaller and cheaper variant have become the talk of the town. Apple fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the brand’s next innovation.

However, before the launch, an image has leaked online and reveals the dummy versions of what the iPhone X Plus and its other variant look like!

Even though these are just dummies and should not be considered real, they are often very similar to the final product. These dummies are used as samples which are often seen used by suppliers.

Keeping previous rumours and other leaks in mind, the dummies look uncannily very accurate, meaning this is likely what the new phones look like. It has been rumoured that two models will feature an OLED screen just like the iPhone X, while the third model will feature a 6.1-inch LCD screen (cheaper variant).

The phones will officially launch at Apple’s event in September.

Pakistan Army Receives Appreciation from Russian Mountaineer After Successful Rescue

A successful operation was carried out by the Pakistan Army aviation this past Tuesday. A Russian mountaineer was stranded and trapped in the Latok Peak in the Karakoram Range and desperately needed help.

For the very first time in the country, an operation like this was undertaken by the officers. With the gloomy & cold weather proving to be a potential obstacle, the Russian mountaineer, Alexander Gukov, was rescued from approximately 26,000 feet.

He was later safely transported to Skardu. On this occasion, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation thanked the Pakistani army men and all officials involved in the operation.

“We express our heartfelt gratitude to the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Pakistani pilots for rescuing our compatriot,” – Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation

Gukov himself shared his feeling and the overall struggle which he went through.

An event like this also occurred last Sunday, a Canadian Mountaineer, Serge Dessureault was leading a team of 9 individuals attempting to climb the K2 peaks. Unfortunately, the mountaineer reportedly slipped from a chimney of a house during a trek and later died.

British Mountaineers Also Rescued

On July 1st, an Army helicopter rescued 2 British Mountaineers from a devastating avalanche as they tried to topple the Ultra Sar peak near Hunza. They were trapped due to bad weather and were rescued from 19,000 feet.

British High Commissioner, Thomas Drew was full of praise for the mission:

“Our gratitude to the Pakistan Army pilots who rescued two British climbers trapped by an avalanche on Ultar Sar Peak near Hunza. Our thoughts with their Austrian fellow climber who did not survive the avalanche,”

Amusement Park Report: Substandard Material Used in Fatal Ride!

The investigation committee was formed after an Askari Amusement Park Karachi ride ended up being fatal for 1 and injured 15 others on 5th July. The ride called ‘Monster’ had broken down killing 14-year old Kashaf.

After extensive inquiries and investigations, it was found that substandard material had been imported from China to build this ride. Not only that but the team operating it was not trained to do so.

The cause of the breakdown was resulted due to weight imbalance and wrong fitting. Furthermore, the welding work done on the ride also failed to meet standards, and no SOPs were set for the ride.

Another eyebrow-raiser was how did this go un-seen during the inspections which were carried out on 2nd July. A conclusion was made that all rides will go through thorough inspections will be carried out for all rides and SOPs will be drawn and met.

Huawei Tops Apple in Tightening Smartphone Market: IDC

China-based Huawei took the second-place spot from Apple in a tightening global smartphone during the second quarter of this year, according to figures released Tuesday by International Data Corporation.

South Korean consumer electronics titan Samsung remained the top smartphone maker, shipping 71.5 million handsets, but Huawei moved into second position with shipments of 54.2 million, according to IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.

Silicon Valley-based Apple shipped 41.3 million iPhones, claiming 12.1 percent of the global market compared to 20.9 percent for Samsung and 15.8 percent for Huawei.

It was the first time since early 2010 that Apple wasn’t in one of the top two spots in the smartphone market, according to IDC.

“The continued growth of Huawei is impressive, to say the least, as is its ability to move into markets where, until recently, the brand was largely unknown,” said Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers.

The iPhone did well, with the top-of-the-line iPhone X model a big seller in many markets, according to IDC. Apple was expected to wrest back control of the market with the release of new iPhone models in the fall.

Apple, Huawei and Samsung were the main contenders when it came to competition for high-end smartphones priced at $700 or more, according to Reith.

Preliminary findings by IDC indicated a total of 342 million smartphones were shipped during the second quarter in a 1.8 percent decline from the same period a year earlier.

The drop marked the third consecutive quarter of year-over-year declines in the global smartphone shipments, according to IDC.

Market saturation and climbing average selling prices were among factors curbing growth in the smartphone market, said Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker research manager Anthony Scarsella.

“Consumers remain willing to pay more for premium offerings in numerous markets and they now expect their device to outlast and outperform previous generations of that device which cost considerably less a few years ago,” Scarsella said.

Sindh Government to Re-Utilize Confiscated Luxury Vehicles

Sindh Government, in compliance with Supreme Court, has confiscated about 150 luxury vehicles from former cabinet members and government officers.

While keeping the federal government’s SOP in mind, the Sindh government has decided to utilise those vehicles.

On Monday, Chief Secretary Major (retd) Azam Suleman had said that these vehicles will be used at the disposal of the protocol wings of the respective CM Secretariat, Governor Secretariat and S&GACD for protocol duties to serve dignitaries.

It was also decided that all vehicles retrieved from the district administrations will be used by commissioners and deputy commissioners for protocol purposes. Cheif Security added that bullet-proof vehicles will be provided to officials and public office holders after assessment.

The luxury cars are almost 10 years old and require repair and maintenance work. The chief secretary has been directed to submit the government’s recommendation before the Supreme Court on August 6.

Uber Hits Brakes on Self-driving Trucks

Uber on Monday said it is hitting the brakes on self-driving trucks, shifting gears to focus just on autonomous cars.

Uber is among a number of technology and car companies racing toward what some contend is an inevitable future in which vehicles drive themselves.

Uber’s aspirations had included self-driving trucks, with the smartphone-summoned-ride service revving that effort with the purchase of startup Otto two years ago.

“We’ve decided to stop development on our self-driving truck program and move forward exclusively with cars,” Eric Meyhofer, head of Uber advanced technologies group, said in an email response to an AFP inquiry.

“We recently took the important step of returning to public roads in Pittsburgh, and as we look to continue that momentum, we believe having our entire team’s energy and expertise focused on this effort is the best path forward.”

San Francisco-based Uber had suspended its self-driving car program after a crash that killed a woman pushing a bicycle in a street in Arizona in March of this year.

Uber has a version of the ride service that matches truck drivers with loads in need of hauling.

In the absence of an urgent need for self-driving trucks to keep Uber Freight competitive, members of that team will work on autonomous cars or be offered spots elsewhere in the company.

Uber Freight has become a national operation since launching in May of 2017.

Otto co-founder Lior Ron left Uber in the weeks after the fatal accident in Arizona, according to media reports.

Ron and co-founders including Anthony Levandowski, started Otto in early 2016. The startup was bought by Uber nine months later in a deal valued at more than $500 million.

Levandowski was a central figure in a blockbuster federal lawsuit filed by Waymo against Uber claiming trade secrets were stolen from the self-driving car project where he worked before leaving to start Otto.

A trial was taking place when Waymo and Uber in February announced a surprise agreement to resolve the legal clash.

Hyundai Pakistan a Threat to Local Brands?

Earlier, Hyundai Pakistan shared its plans to start locally manufacturing their vehicles in Pakistan. Initially, the plan is to produce 10,000 units per annum by 2020.

Hyundai-Nishat wants to then further grow and manufacture 30,000 units per annum by 2024. While the plant is expected to be completed by 2019, we can expect full-fledged operations to kick-off from early 2020.

Hyundai-Nishat Pakistan is reportedly going to launch the pickup truck H100 which is famously known as Shehzore in the local markets. Following the Tucson SUV, Kona, and Elantra.

Pakistan-Assembled Hyundai Cars to Hit the Streets in 2020

However, if the lineup is closely monitored, we can come to a conclusion that none of the cars in the Hyundai Pakistan lineup have an advantage compared to their rivals, from price point and specifications as well.

This means that business for Toyota (IMC), Honda Pakistan, and even Suzuki Pakistan. However, we still have to see what miracle the company can produce to make things better for them in terms of business.
