Will Wearing Face Masks Become Mandatory In The Future?

Source: Business Recorder

The coronavirus pandemic is an ongoing crisis the world is facing, with over 900,000 people infected with the disease worldwide. The crisis has claimed more than 48,000 lives till date.  The virus that originated in Wuhan, China has now spread globally.

The one thing that Coronavirus has brought forward is the wearing of masks to protect yourself from the virus. It is slowly becoming the new normal, going out for groceries? You would see people wearing masks and gloves. However, people have been undivided over this and the topic has been debated on multiple times over.

Source: Khaleej Times

To Wear or Not to Wear, What Does the WHO Say?

To wear or not to wear the face mask? That has become the key question during the pandemic as the face mask has become a symbol of our changed lives under coronavirus.

In a recent briefing by the WHO held on 30th March, they still stand by their previous recommendation of wearing masks only if:

  • You are sick
  • Caring for someone who is sick
  • You are a frontline health worker

However, WHO was careful not to criticize countries that advise wearing of masks. The agency stressed on the fact that the masks are commonly misused and therefore don’t offer the required protection.

They believe, wearing a mask will make people less vigilant and give a sense of false security, such as they may not wash their hands often. WHO also added that a mask becomes less effective when it does not cover your nose or when people touch the outside of the mask.

What the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases & CDC Are Saying:

The US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases are under a discussion to recommend the broad use of masks in America said their Director, Dr.Anthony Fauci. The CDC is also looking at the same issue carefully as the US now has the highest number of people infected with Covid-19. On Monday, President Trump in a White House briefing mentioned:

“We are not going to be wearing masks forever, but it could be for a short period of time after we get back into gear. I could see something like that happening for a period of time.”

What Does the New Research Say?

Ongoing research in the US by MIT Professor Lydia Bourouiba used high-speed cameras and sensors to see what happens after we sneeze and cough. They found that coughs can project liquid up to 6m away while sneezes can reach up to 8m away.
She spoke to BBC and said she was worried of the current concept of ‘safe distances’. She further mentioned,
“What we exhale, cough or sneeze is a gas cloud that has high momentum that can go far, traps the drops of all sizes in it and carries them through the room. So having this false idea of safety at one to two metres, that somehow drops will just fall to the ground at that distance is not based on what we have quantified, measured and visualised directly.”

Does This Change What We Know About Masks?

Prof Bourouiba believes certain situations, especially indoors in poorly ventilated rooms, wearing masks would reduce the risks. She says, when facing someone who’s infected, masks could help divert the flow of their breath and its load of virus away from your mouth.

She further adds,

“Flimsy masks are not going to protect from inhaling the smallest particulates in the air because they do not provide filtration, but they would potentially divert the cloud that is being emitted with high momentum to the side instead of forward.”

According to Prof Heymann, a WHO Adviser,  the new research from MIT and other institutions would be taken under consideration and evaluated because it suggests that droplets from coughs and sneezes could be projected further than originally perceived.

Prof Heymann also said that if the evidence is supported, then “it might be that wearing a mask is equally as effective or more effective than distancing.”

Countries Where Face Masks Are Mandatory:

As the debate over mask wearing continues, there are some countries who have made it mandatory for people to wear masks in public. These countries include:
  1. Czech Republic
  2. Slovakia
  3. Bosnia
  4. Austria

So, the answer to your question about masks becoming mandatory could be a yes as per the laws in your country.

The UAE has made it mandatory for people to wear a mask when they go to the grocery store, not doing so could result in a fine of Dh. 1,000. Other countries like Hong Kong saw a considerable decrease in cases when the public began wearing masks outdoors.

Dalgona Coffee

You might as well have noticed ‘Dalgona Coffee’ going viral on social media. Amid the coronavirus outbreak, cafe’s across the globe have shut down and people have found an alternative for their caffeine fix.

We tried making it at home, and we loved it! The drink is very much like the whipped coffee we make at desi households, only to be added to cold milk and not warm milk.

You need a total of three ingredients instant coffee (only instant coffee can mimic the foam), sugar (white or brown), and milk (any kind of milk would do).

For one cup of coffee, you will need 2 teaspoons of instant coffee, 2 teaspoons of sugar, and 2 teaspoons of hot water. Combine them, and beat them for good 15 minutes until you see the liquid mixture tuning into a foam but we are pretty sure, you will have a sore arm at the end of it. Great way to start your mornings during the lockdown!

If you’re making it for more than one serving, just add the ingredients accordingly. Use a hand beater instead. Your whipped foam will be ready in less than 2 minutes.

Once done, add ice cubes to your glass. Pour milk as you like and place the foam on top. You can choose to add more or less as to how strong you like your coffee and tadaaa!

School Children To Get Free Resources For Online Learning

Islamabad, April 1, 2020: Pakistan’s domestic digital and innovative learning industry has come together to offer FREE internet-based education products and services to students, teachers and schools during the current COVID-19 epidemic to combat the educational disruption.

The award-winning products and services span the entire spectrum of K12 education, from early childhood development (ECD) to higher secondary. They allow students to continue to learn and teachers to engage with the students while being at homes. Ilm Association (ilmA) members currently providing FREE services include Azcorp entertainment, Sabaq MUSE, Knowledge Platform, Learning pitch, KarMuqabla, Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi, Sabaq Foundation and Orenda Taleemabad. More members are expected to contribute more resources in the coming few days. Hence the COVID-19 products link shared above will be updated regularly.

Due to the closure of schools, online learning is the only readily available means for continuing education at home. “We consider it our civic duty to provide our online products and services for free to affected Pakistanis during this time of national emergency”, stated ilmA President Hassan Bin Rizwan.

It is estimated that more than three million children currently utilize domestically created online learning products and services in Pakistan. They benefit from cutting edge multimedia content and pedagogical innovations in English and local languages, which makes learning more interesting. The content is matched to national and provincial curriculums and backed by online assessments.

“Getting these solutions into the hands of tens of millions of students, hundreds of thousands of teachers and schools affected by this crisis is our biggest priority at the moment. We want all responsible Pakistanis to assist us in this offer reaching as many of them as possible through social media and all other channels”, urged ilmA board member, Baela Raza.

The COVID epidemic is fueling the conversation for more focus needed around online learning among parents, teachers and educationists. During the school shutdown, there is a need to explore innovative ways to help students learn at home. The options for learning through social distance include Television, Radio, Online and its hybrids through social media WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram and restricted face to face in communities with shared mobile phone facilities. Learning solutions during the crisis also requires an aggressive communication strategy with all media to enable solutions offered to reach to All citizens.  “We are looking to partner with the government, NGOs, donors, charities, corporations, internet device makers and media so that we can continue to provide these solutions for free beyond current disruption and to reach more children inclusively” explained executive director of ilmA, Zulfiqar Qazilbash. This online offer will continue during the current disruption.

No matter what the differences may be or how much we may despise someone, we all come together for the greater good and understand the importance of supporting those in need.

However, when Indian cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Harbajan Singh took it to social media to show support of Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi’s Crornavirus funds, they were abused.

Afridi had reached out to his fans and followers to ask for support to help the needy through his foundation.

Harbhajan urged people to contribute in a video message and urged cricketers in other countries to also be a part.

Yuvraj also tweeted “These are testing times, it’s time to look out for each other,”

Unfortunately, these two young men were abused online for their vocal support for Shahid Afridi Foundation!

Up Close & Personal: ‘Darvesh’ Talks About Their Latest Music Video

Q1) Darvesh has been around for a while now, why have you released a music video now?

Yes, we’ve have been around for about 4 years now. It took us some time to understand the journey we wanted pursue, to understand the sound of the band and the strength of the band members. We always take time to work on our tracks because all these tracks are not just songs but are a piece of our heart. Every song has a reason or a story behind it and we like to take our time into telling it. Right?

Q2) Can you briefly describe your creative process , whats it like?

Our creative process is very different from how it usually is for different bands or artists. For us, usually Rafay composes a song with Zain and calls in Saad or Haider to work on the melody. Once the song is ready and composed, it goes into the arrangement process. Qumber, the drummer of our band, comes in to arrange the song and decide what parts goes where.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WlTFUX1Fjk

This is the most time taking process as there is a lot of back and forth within the band and when everyone is satisfied with the arrangement of the song, we move on towards making our musical pieces over it. This is when Mohsin, Chandan, Qumber takes control of the driving seat to shape the song musically and decide the musical pieces, technical stuff and the groove of the song. Zain usually tries to keep the groove very eastern with Chandan, whereas Qumber and Mohsin usually come up with a progressive rock groove.

Then it goes into the fusion process of combining both and coming up with transitions and bridges to connect the eastern and the progressive element together. Once all of this is done, the vocalists start putting in their magic then! Saad keeps the song going as per the composition through his vocal power, whereas Haider always comes up with different sorts of eastern experimental sounds and harmonies. Waqar dives in with his eastern classical knowledge and his command over the vocals along with Samson, who becomes the cherry on top through his deep husky vocals.

Q3) What inspired you to name your band  ‘Darvesh’?

Darvesh is broadly an individual entity, a person who is in love, who has submitted himself to love. That’s who we are. 10 adamant children, listening to their hearts and doing what they love the most, Music. We love what we do, we are not here to compete with anyone and we don’t compare ourselves with anyone. We are moving according to our time and pace, we have stories of love to tell but with time!

Q4)  What was the inspiration behind your latest music video “Main Mast”?

The inspiration for this video came to the director, Sibtain Shabbir. A visionary and super talented director and an even greater friend. I still remember him telling me that the following lines got stuck in his mind, “Maslaq dekhoun, Mazhab dekhoun, Ishq Samandur uthta dekhoun, Baycheni ko kaise rokoun?”. He was inspired from the Dr. Nimrita Kumari case and wanted to tell her story through a mime acting as her father and then herself. This is not known to the world and people have been coming up with interpretations as per their understanding which is amazing because that’s how artworks. People relate to it as per their understanding and experiences, however, I have just spilled the beans I guess.

Q5) Any artist you would love to collaborate in the future?

Yessss. We love to collaborate! We’ve collaborated with over 55 leading artists of the industry over a song in solidarity with Kashmir a few months back. We firmly believe, it helps you learn and grow! To name a few though, we would love to collaborate with Abida Parveen Jee, Jaffer (Kaavish), Gumby, Rohail Hyatt, Xulfi, Junoon, Atif maybe Zeb and Ali Sethi too. Oh but we would want to collaborate with Ahmed Jehanzaib, QB and Strings too. Haha, so like we said the list keeps growing!

Q6) Upcoming projects?

Yes, loads! We have decided that 2020 is going to be the year where we release a lot of content. We had planned live collaborations and shows but unfortunately, those are all canceled due to the current global pandemic. However, we plan to release a complete album on YouTube hopefully after Ramadan, more music videos, an original thumri we created for a fashion show as we have loads and loads of requests from India and UK to release it. So, hopefully, a lot of new music releasing this year!

April Fools Day 2020 is NOT Being Celebrated this Year!

Credits: Euro Weekly News Spain

Today is 1st April, a day marked in history to be known as ‘April Fools Day’ when everyone tries their level best to pull off the best-of-the-best pranks. However, this year is different.

The year 2020 has not been great so far as the world has been gripped by the novel Coronavirus outbreak leading to a worldwide recession.

Thousands have lost their jobs, their life, and this is absolutely no time to crack jokes. Hence, there will be no April Fools 2020!

Even tech giant Google called off its annual tradition given the dark times that have to ponder upon us.

Reportedly, Lorraine Twohill, Google’s head of marketing, states in a memo obtained by Business Insider:

Our highest goal right now is to be helpful to people, so let’s save the jokes for next April, which will undoubtedly be a whole lot brighter than this one.

We’ve already stopped any centralized April Fool’s efforts but realize there may be smaller projects within teams that we don’t know about.

Please suss out those efforts and make sure your teams pause on any jokes they may have planned — internally or externally.

Others are following suit of the decision as attempting to pull off an April Fools’ joke in the midst of a global pandemic is not the best way for any brand to represent themselves.

Even US President Donald Trump ‘suspended’ this year’s April Fools’ Day saying:

very few fools in the mood for pranks to feel like the pranks they should be.

Olympics is gone, NBA is gone, that Euro thing is gone, and everything is going. At this moment, it’s best that we push back the most celebrated day in the history of an American president.

Fools die, so don’t act like one in this crazy time. Be smart.

However, for those brands who have not received this memo yet… We are keeping our eyes open for you!

The Good & Bad: 8 Ways Coronavirus Will Change The World

The Coronavirus pandemic is a world-shattering event whose far-ranging consequences we can only begin to imagine today. This much is certain: Just as this disease has shattered lives, disrupted markets and exposed the competence (or lack thereof) of governments, it will lead to permanent shifts in political and economic power in ways that will become apparent only later.

COVID 19 will show us the new normal where the entire world where hopefully we will use this crisis to rebuild, produce something better and more humane. Coronavirus is an epidemic for our times. Perhaps more than any disease in living memory, it chimes with our society’s fears.

Here’s how COVID 19 will change the planet:

1. Fragile Economy

Source/ DailyMail

The official data has confirmed a widespread slowdown in economic activity and people will be forced to do odd jobs in order to make money. The economics of collapse is given. Businesses exist to make a profit. If they can’t produce, they can’t sell things. This means they won’t make profits, which means they are less able to employ you.

2. Working from home will be normal

Source/ Forbes

We’re all learning how remote meetings, panels, and other events work. To the extent that companies stick with these habits once we’re all able to work and travel like normal again, these changes could have a more lasting impact on our energy use, particularly in transportation.

3. Value of loved ones will be learned

Source/ Huffpost

By extension, people have rallied to one another via family, friends, and neighbors. The scramble to get loved ones home from overseas was an eloquent reminder of what really counts.

4. Need for skilled people

Source/ The Guardian

This crisis is a larger-scale and longer-term lesson on the fragility of our civilization. We are reminded that, despite the boors, we need education, knowledge, and expertise. We also need teachers at every level and we must have skilled doctors and paramedics.

5. Change in environment

Last but never least is the environmental crisis, which has been put on hold by coronavirus. Pollution levels and carbon emissions will seriously reduce. After the crisis, things could well slope back to previous destructive levels. But it does not have to happen and it’s high time we take responsibility for that.

6. Business travel will be reduced

Source/ Travelport

Business travel is often considered important for the success of whole organizations and the effectiveness of running them. It is certainly true that face-to-face meetings help build relationships and trust, which is often crucial for making a project succeed.

However, now that businesses and other organizations are being forced to radically cut down or stop business travel, they may realize that it’s not so essential after all – as long as they find working substitutes.

7. Higher surveillance

We may see a method of proactive surveillance-based medical monitoring that automates healthcare and keeps society productive. By closely monitoring smartphones, and demanding that people report their body temperature and medical condition, China and Israel generated vast population datasets that algorithms could apply anti-contagion rules to.

8. Washing hands

People will now be requested to avoid shaking hands and greet each other with a certain distance and assure that they take care of their hygiene and cleanliness. In addition to fighting COVID-19, all this increased hand-washing will also fight multiple other illnesses that use dirty hands as a vector to human beings.

Pakistan’s premier beverage brand, Murree Brewery is the most prominent manufacturers of alcoholic products in the country. Due to the prevailing situation in the country, the company has asked the government of Punjab to grant them permission to produce hand sanitizers that would help Pakistan in the fight against Coronavirus.

Isphanyar M. Bhandra, the Chief Executive of Murree Brewery wrote to the Director-General of Excise and Taxation, Punjab to ask for permission to sell alcohol-based hand sanitizers. He mentions,

“Murree Brewery Co. Ltd possessed L-1 and L-3 licenses which are for the manufacturing/sale of intoxicating liquor and ethanol is the basic raw material for it. Considering the current pandemic situation of COVID-19 in the country and shortage/unavailability of hand sanitisers throughout Pakistan, we believe that as a responsible company we must contribute our role in making hand sanitisers on war footing basis to help the nation in this hard time.”

He further urged for the special permission without the necessary long formalities so they would be able to produce the sanitisers immediately.

Murree Brewery has been asked to shut down its operations during the lockdown. Therefore, the beverage company has asked for special approval from the Director-General, Excise and Taxation, Punjab to resume normal working operations. Murree Brewery’s General Manager also mentions that they have installed hand sanitizers for the staff and provided them with masks.

Globally, various brewery brands including Coors Beers have started manufacturing hand sanitisers to meet the market demand during the pandemic. It would be helpful if Murree Brewery was granted permission to do the same as it is the need of the hour.

Antarctica Records First-Ever Unprecedented Summer Heatwave!

Credits: Daily Mail

The year 2020 just keeps surprising us! First, the novel Coronavirus spooked us to the core and now for the first time in history, Antarctica has recorded its first-ever heatwave!

The world’s coolest continent could not save itself from the global-warming crisis. Researchers from the Australian Antarctic Program revealed on Tuesday that they had recorded temperatures as high as 9.2 degrees Celsius earlier this year.

“Heatwaves are classified as three consecutive days with both extreme maximum and minimum temperatures,” University of Wollongong biologist Dr. Sharon Robinson explained.

It was recorded that between January 23-26, a temperature of above 0 and up till 9.2 degrees was recorded.

“In the 31-year record for Casey, this maximum is 6.9 degrees Celsius higher than the mean maximum temperature for the station, while the minimum is 0.2 degrees Celsius higher,” Robinson said.

“Most life exists in small ice-free oases in Antarctica, and largely depends on melting snow and ice for their water supply,” Australian Antarctic Division applied Antarctic ecologist, Dr. Dana Bergstrom said.

“Meltwater flooding can provide additional water to these desert ecosystems, leading to increased growth and reproduction of mosses, lichens, microbes, and invertebrates. However excessive flooding can dislodge plants and alter the composition of communities of invertebrates and microbial mats.”

The researchers believe this sudden change in temperature is highly influenced by the Southern Hemisphere’s meteorological patterns during spring and summer of 2019. These patterns are highly influenced by the early breakup of the ozone hole in late 2019, according to Australian Antarctic Division atmospheric scientist Dr. Andrew Klekociuk.

On the other hand, global efforts to help repair the hole in the ozone layer will help reduce the regional shifts as well as bring a stable change to the climate system.
