COVID-19: This Funny Public Awareness Video Is Just What We Need

Veteran comedian Faisal Qureshi runs a production house with the name of ‘Game Over Productions’. And as one would expect from the remarkable comedian, he is doing a fantastic job keeping his loyal fans entertained. Just Yesterday, he posted a video on his page. It was a short clip featuring many celebrities with the idea to spread awareness about COVID-19.

The video is titled “Video Call To Action: A short Message on Corona awareness”. Faisal Qureshi himself is seen hosting the video and has invited three guests. For reasons of social distancing during COVID, like many other shows, this program as well is seen happening on what is most probably a zoom meeting. As guests, the invitees were Waseem Akram, Shehzad Roy, and Mehwish Hayat.

The lineup for the guests was indeed perfect because all of them are known to be very vocal when it comes to public service messages and actually giving back to the community. They, too, seemed excited to be on the program.

The short program starts with Faisal Qureshi talking about COVID-19 and how dangerous it is. He then begins introducing each guest and slightly shed light on their achievements to show that they are qualified in talking about this issue. All in all, this video call to action did indeed convey all the message that we, as Pakistanis, really needed to hear.

Now, you may be wondering, exactly what is it that makes such a serious message funny. Well, there is the thing. Only a veteran actor/comedian can do that. By not allowing them to speak in the entire appearance, he used their face to attract eyeballs and hence, was successfully able to convey a message which people generally skip.

In the end, the pissed-off celebrities stormed away, but the comedian was still rambling off. While this was all already very funny, the last sentence added even more flavor.

Online platforms are the new ‘in’. Instead of adjusting your schedule to watch entertainment content on television, online platforms allow you to make your schedule. And so people prefer watching movies to dramas to documentaries all on them. And yet, even with so many online platforms available by now, Netflix remains in the top categories. So while you may be a loyal ‘Netflix-ian’, it is quite possible that you have not seen these four hugely underrated movies on Netflix.

1. Enola Holmes

We all know and love Sherlock Holmes. This love began with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who created this character. But when Robert Downey Jr or Benedict Cumber batch brought their flare to Sherlock, the character became so much more than just an exceptional detective. Interestingly, however, the story of Sherlock Holmes is always a bit blurry when it comes to his sister. And this time, Netflix has given one whole movie to explain the story of the less spoken off sister, Enola. It brings fun, comedy, and intelligence without showing a girl to be weak. It is a must-watch, most definitely.

2. Marriage Story

Ironically marriage story is about divorce. And after seeing these two people playing dynamic roles in Star Wars and Avengers, Adam Driver and Scarlett Johannson, play ordinary people would have needed effort if it were anybody other than such great actors of the industry. But they make the funny-sad-normal movie, every bit amazing.

3. Annihilation

A sci-fi movie where the task force sent to deal with the anomaly is entirely female? Count me in. Actually, I have not watched it, but after just seeing the trailer, it seems like it is vastly underrated. So, I, for one, have added it to my watchlist.

4. #Alive

Zombie movies are usually about when you are out on the road, and all hell breaks loose. And the hero has to save himself and the people around him. But #alive is different. It is about two people who do not leave their apartment much. And while they are inside, the virus takes over their entire area. They have to battle through hunger, isolation and then find their will to live. For me, this was one zombie movie that actually had a story.

There are so many more movies on Netflix that you may have missed out on. To name a few, there is ‘Set it up’, Peninsula, Okja. So if you are under quarantine, practicing social isolation, or just bored, look up these movies and enjoy the core.

A Netflix series has sparked a row amongst Indians. Will this also be distorted and made into a Hindu-Muslim struggle or not?

What Happened?

Netflix’s web series ‘A Suitable Boy’ was accused of having hurt “religious sentiments” by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders. The show has a scene where a Hindu woman and a man belonging to the Muslim community share a kiss at a temple.

This, according to BJP Party leaders, calls for legal actions because the show is promoting ‘love jihad.’

What Is The Show About?

‘A Suitable Boy’ is Mira Nair’s TV adaptation of Vikram Seth’s novel A Suitable Boy. The series was released on Netflix on October 23. Ishaan Khatter, Tabu, Tanya Maniktala, and Rasika Dugal are seen in pivotal roles in the series and maybe in danger as a result too.

The series is set in the backdrop of newly independent India and is about families finding “a suitable boy” for their daughters.

Current Status of Legal Proceedings

BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra have initiated action against the OTT platform. “Netflix is promoting love jihad,” Tiwari said in a tweet in Hindi, which is sensationalizing this further.

Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra said, “I have instructed authorities to check what legal action can be taken against these scenes…”. Not only is BJP coming after the platform itself but also the producer of the series. This just shows to what extent this event is being received negatively.

Netflix Is Not Off The Hook

On the other hand, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Goel also called for an FIR to be registered against Netflix.

“If any OTT platform is deliberately insulting the Hindu Gods & Goddess, pls file the complaint with the police or local court under Section 295A of IPC. The law will take care of such offenders. In case of any assistance, you can contact me or @chakusameer,” he tweeted.

What Is Likely To Happen?

This looks a lot like how Pakistanis received the video of Saba Qamar twirling in a mosque. That was just a twirl, and this was a kiss in a religious place for the Hindus, the temple. While the sentiments are understandable, the extent to which the BJP party will go is not.

The show’s producers are likely to apologize for it but will it be enough? Those who are hell-bent on bringing a platform like Netflix down on its knees will not be silenced with just an apology. Here’s hoping no harm is caused to anyone during this process.

HEC Announces Hungarian Scholarship Programme 2021 For Higher Studies

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan strives to offer more avenues for the Pakistani population to avail. These avenues are both local and international. They took to Twitter on Sunday to announce another scholarship opportunity, that of a Hungarian Scholarship. The opportunity is titled ‘Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme 2021’.

Considering most scholarships are for Master’s level students, this particular one provides an opportunity for undergraduate aspirants. As per the guidelines issued by the HEC, the program is for Bachelor’s, One-tier master’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees. One can choose to pursue a bachelor’s after 12 years of education, a one-Tier Master’s Degree after 12 years of education, a Master’s Degree after 16 years of education, and a Ph.D. Degree after 17/18 years of schooling.

HEC has said in the notice that:

“The program is managed by HEC Pakistan in collaboration with the Tempus Public Foundation, Hungary. Instructions must be read thoroughly before applying for the scholarship. Applicants must submit online applications on BOTH the Hungarian and HEC websites (separately).”

Should one forget to fill out one application, they will be disqualified.

And what makes it grander is that it expands to involved Azad Jammu and Kashmir national in this scheme.

The disciplines involved

There is one catch in this scholarship, however. There is a specified number of disciplines that one can apply to attain this scholarship. Let’s look at those disciplines and the major subjects.

For undergraduate studies, the fields are ‘Arts and Humanities’, Social Sciences, Computer Science and Information Technology, Economic Science, Engineering Science, Medical and Health Science, Teacher Training, Sports science, natural science, arts, and art education. For Master’s, the fields are Agricultural Science, Arts, and Humanities, Social Science, Computer Science, and Information Technology, Legal Science, Economic Science, Engineering Science, Medical and Health Science, Teacher Training, Sport Science, Natural Science, and Arts. As for a Ph.D., one can pursue the field of choice.

As the current existing generation on this planet, it comes to us as a responsibility to save the environment. We have to save behind a world for the next generations of people to come. If we continue on the same path of destruction and deforestation, there may not be a planet left to save. T

The movie ‘Interstellar’ even showed how much humans actually managed to cause turmoil and chaos. They achieved such a point that they had to plan an exit route from Earth! Let us keep that film as a lesson on what not to do to Mother Nature. In light of saving the environment, Google’s New Tool can actually help us save it. Since what we lack is the plantation of trees to a massive extent, this new tool can enable us to go beyond those bounds.

Saving The Environment:

The removal of mangrove forests in Pakistan became a dire issue once. Since mangroves are planted near the river, they are essential for us. Pakistan’s agro-based economy depends heavily on its rivers. So, Pakistan began a series of activities to save the mangrove forests. Nearly a decade later, we stand at a better than all that time ago.

So how has Google managed to come up with a tool to plant trees? Must they have employed some form of technology to achieve this result? Yes, that is exactly what they did. They are using Artificial Intelligence in aerial imagery to figure out where trees need to be planted. Right now, the operation is taking place in Los Angeles, but their plans extend beyond those bounds!

The New Tool:

What they are doing is image processing. Image processing is quite useful when it comes to 21dt century technology. Even self-driving cars intend to use that form of technology for navigation. Google uses images taken by planes during all four seasons. Then Google AI scans these images and detects where the trees are in each one.

The data from Los Angeles states that 50% of the population lives in areas with less than 10% of tree coverage. Additionally, it showed that 44% of the population lives in extreme heat risk areas. Both these places require canopies and tree layers for more coverage. Right now, they are mapping the entire city of Los Angeles to get accurate results and act accordingly. The more trees they plant, the better it is for the environment.

The Meaning Of Life:

This is an initial step for Google’s New Tool, but it can go far. Since the lack of trees is an issue common in many parts of the world, the same technology can be employed. We hope that Pakistan can get a whiff of this tool as well. We are in dire need of more trees and human-made forests.

Google is taking enormous bounds forward. Be it technology related to the environment or urban lifestyle; Google is dipped in all of them.
