The Ad Has A Simple, Sweet Message

The ad opens with a tense atmosphere as a father and son are sitting on a table, stoic and quiet while the mother makes herself scarce. Hesitantly, we realise the son is about to apologise for bumping the car. However, a simple gesture such as the father pouring 7UP for the son immediately repairs the situation.

The song in the background, soft and comforting, changes the atmosphere completely and the warm light only adds to it. The lyrics, “dil thora khaali tha, bhar gaya” encapsulates the importance of affection perfectly.

In desi households, we are all used to sometimes feeling incapable of expressing our emotions. Especially when the emotions are pertaining to love and affection and that is alright. Haven’t we all found ourselves in this situation with our dads when we have done something wrong and moms can’t do anything? 7Up teaches us that there is more than one way to express love, gratitude, and understanding.

This ad also shows us how dads are often just tough love. They appear scary and distant but from the inside, they are soft and full of love. Kudos to Asif Raza Mir for playing the role brilliantly. Moreover, the son is also a relatable character who is reckless yet, must answer to his parents. The mother also adds to making the union joyful.

The story was brought to life by the acting prowess of Osama khan, Asif Raza Mir and Hina Bayat. It was especially refreshing to see that no long-winded dialogues were needed by Asif who expressed a ton of words without uttering a single one on screen.

Govt Announces New COVID-19 Measures All Across Pakistan

With the deteriorating conditions of the country pertaining to coronavirus, the Government of Pakistan has announced new SOPs to follow. They have also warned that if these measures are not followed, the Government will be forced to impose a lockdown which will be disastrous for the working class.

While having requested the public to follow the SOPs religiously, PM Imran Khan also stated that this time they will be taking the help of the Pakistan Army to ensure the enforcement of the measures.

The new rules are:

  • Cities with a positivity rate above 5% will have their schools closed until Eid, classes 9-12 will be included in this.
  • Markets will only stay open till 6pm. After that only essential businesses will be allowed to operate.
  • Until eid, indoor, as well as outdoor dining, banned. Only takeaway and deliveries will be allowed.
  • Gyms that have indoor settings will be closed.
  • Offices to operate at the capacity of 50%. The rest of the 50% to be at work from home. They will be closed daily at 2 pm.
  • No eid shopping to happen after iftar.

Ferozsons Laboratories Limited Collaborates With Rizq Under Its Omega Initiative To Combat Hunger

Lahore, 21st April 2021:  Ferozsons Laboratories Limited, a leading pharmaceutical company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Rizq, an innovative social enterprise dedicated to ending hunger in Pakistan,  to launch the Ferozsons Omega Initiative. The initiative aims to improve access of food at hospitals and underserved communities across Pakistan. In line with the UN sustainable development goals, the Ferozsons Omega Initiative also works to create awareness around the wastage of food.

The MoU was signed by the CEO of Ferozsons Laboratories Limited, Mr. Osman Khalid Waheed and Rizq Founder Mr. Qasim Javaid  The signing ceremony took place at the Ferozsons Head Office in Lahore.

The overarching objective of the project is to reduce food insecurity and improve healthcare outcomes for underprivileged communities in Pakistan. Under the signed MoU, Ferozsons will provide a financial grant as well as field support to Rizq. The programme will support underprivileged patients under treatment at various hospitals during the month of Ramadan.

The scope of the MoU also includes other activities including a ‘Save Food, Save Life’ campaign which aims to create awareness about steps one can take to eliminate food wastage from restaurants and homes and redistribute cooked food to marginalized communities. Rizq is a non-profit established by young graduates of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) committed to eliminating food wastage, ending hunger and addressing poverty.

While talking about the collaboration, CEO Ferozsons Laboratories, Mr. Osman Khalid Waheed commented, “Lack of nutrition is a leading cause of disease in Pakistan. Through the Ferozsons Omega Initiative, we will work with Rizq  to support the nutrition requirements of patients, families in a safe and hygienic manner.”

While speaking at the occasion, Mr. Qasim Javaid founder of Rizq said “Considering that 37% of our population faces food insecurity, it is extremely important for us to tackle this issue. Our partnership with Ferozsons under the Omega Initiative will go a long way in aiding our mission to eradicate hunger and support the vulnerable groups in critical need for appropriate nutrition to recover from diseases, and to simply survive. With this initiative, Rizq aims to take a step forward in achieving just that.”

Collaborations like these represent hope and a precursor to addressing long-standing issues of hunger, poor health and poverty in our society.

Female Pakistani Student In The US Becomes Victim Of Acid Attack

Hate crimes as a direct result of racism are on the rise in the United States of America. It is evident how much the Black community has to suffer at the hands of racism from the number of people that came out of their houses to support Black Lives Matter (BLM). But other groups are also being targeted as part of hate crimes, the Asian community, alongside the Muslim community. For the latter, a female Pakistani student became the victim of a recent crime.

Almost a month ago, on March 17th, Nafiah Fatima was attacked with acid. The incident happened at 8:15 pm when she was helping her mother unload the car. The 21-year-old Nafiah goes to Hofstra University and lives at Arlington Avenue Residence. In a video obtained from the neighbor’s house, one can see that the suspect rushed towards Nafiah, so it’s clear that Nafiah was targeted.

Moreover, he was carrying a dark-colored substance in a white cup very carefully as he wore gloves. So it is clear that he knew about how dangerous the substance was. Right after he threw the acid on Nafiah, he fled the scene.

Horror descended

The moment acid touched her body, it started burning her. She screamed in pain and rushed towards the house. Her parents heard the scream and tried to help her, but because she was screaming, the acid entered her mouth, burning her throat and tongue. In trying to help their daughter, her parent also sustained burns. As for Nafiyah, she got severe burns in her eyes, face, chest, and arms. She was wearing lenses that melted in her eyes.

It is being said that she had the acid went past the throat and into the lungs, she would have died. The disaster to the eye was two folds: one, acid had gone into the eyes; and two, the lens melted. So while she survived death, she may lose her vision.

GoFundMe gathers funding for female Pakistani student

Nafiyah and her mother cannot work while the medical bills, legal fees, security keep piling up. To help with the finances, a friend initiated a GoFundMe page. The page initially had set the goal for $50,000, but as of now, it has gathered more than $420,000, and it keeps on increasing.

According to the police, the suspect is still at large. He is being said to have a height of 6 feet 2 inches. On the day of the crime, he was wearing a black colored sweatshirt on his skinny build with a hood.

Will he get caught? Will Muslims continue to face hate with little or no regulation? Or will once again the suspect of a Muslim hate crime be treated as mentally unstable?

This Old Man’s ‘Taraweeh’ Story Will Restore Your Faith In Love

Someone on Twitter shared a precious exchange they had with an aged man and the story blew up. Keep reading to restore your faith that love is indeed not yet dead.

A Taraweeh Love Story

The person on Twitter definitely knows how to tell a story. Opening with a quote as profound and moving as that one had us hooked from the start. While sitting for Taraweeh, this guy noticed how an uncle besides him had brought two bottles along with him.

There was plain water and a bottle with Rooh Afza. What may seem like a normal preparation for choice turned out to be the basis of a love story of a lifetime.

What Was Peculiar About the Bottles?

Naturally, someone would assume the Rooh Afza is for when blood sugar levels decline or when one just needs a boost of energy. However, this aged man only drank from the plain water and kept the other bottle intact. This prompted our storyteller to speak to him after Taraweeh:

Reading Taraweeh Together

Turns out, the Rooh Afza was the uncle’s wife’s (now departed) choice of drink. She passed away two years ago until which they used to read Taraweeh together. This would have been their 26th Taraweeh round as the “Taya ji” noted. Now he comes alone and also reads her share of Taraweeh.

However, what has left us emotional is how he is still in service to her. He, not only still makes the Rooh Afza bottle out of love for her memory but also trying to get more sawab to her. He, himself, says that he makes it to give to whoever is thirsty, so that his wife may be credited. If that’s not love, we don’t know what is!

This Story Has A Moral

The moral of the story is firstly to be kind to strangers. Lend a helping hand or a listening ear, we don’t know what baggage people are carrying with them. This man carries the loss of his wife on his shoulders each time he comes to Taraweeh, maybe this exchange lightened his heart a little.

The other lesson is to love our loved ones as strongly as we can. We may never know which moments with them may be our last. This is also something the pandemic has made us see the value of. Go out there and hug your parents, siblings, grandparents today!

Should This Be A Point of Controversy?

Many supporters of Sabzwari would argue no! Let him wear what he wants to when he’s exercising. Men wear similar attire in gyms too, there’s nothing wrong with that. He is also only minding his business.

However, the controversy is stemming from the double standards this video exposes. If a woman was jogging in only a sports top and shorts, would it be acceptable? Sabzwari is practically naked but his choice of attire won’t reflect on the morality of the society. Why is it the other way around?

Moreover, France banning Muslim women from covering their bodies has also sparked similar debates. The clothing of women has always been more than just an outfit, it’s meant to signify society, family, piety and so on. The message ‘impossible is nothing’ is not hard to understand. But it certainly takes willpower to incorporate into our lifestyle. What it denotes is accurately explained by Muhammad Ali:

The message in the ad is certainly inspiring, but while watching the ad, it reminds the viewers, or at least me, of another ad—an ad by Nike, a rival company, featuring Kobe Bryant. Social media has been an immense help in these COVID times as it has helped reduce the distance for many during the lockdown. Alongside that, it has also aided in connecting people in need medically or economically. You must have seen various covid emergency posts coming up all over the social media platforms and they have been helpful to many as well because people want to help each other in these troubling times.

However, it seems that while social media has been a help, the people it connects with may not be all that helpful, in fact, they can be very much a source of harassment. This is exactly what happened with a girl last week.

Shasvathi Siva, an Indian girl was worried about her aunt’s health ever since she contracted COVID. Everyone is experiencing different extent of COVID so while doctors are suggesting quarantining at home. When the health worsens severely, patients have to be taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, however, hospitals are full and are lacking enough ventilators to accommodate patients.

So for this reason, Shasvathi decided to take on the help of social media. Within a few hours, she had found the ventilator for her aunt.

Situation goes critical

Within a couple of days, the health condition of her aunt went critical. They needed plasma donors for her. So once again, Shasvathi went to Twitter asking for people’s help. As it goes, several people reshared her request. And some of her friends even added her personal number for quick connection. But given how the men are, she ended up regretting it.

Instead of getting a plasma donor whom she urgently needed for a COVID emergency, people started harassing her. They asked her out on dates, giving her unsolicited comments, and wanted to know her relationship status.

She continued blocking all those numbers but they poured in without pause and the level of harassment kept heightening with time. She even got obscene and inappropriate pictures on her WhatsApp account.

Exhausted, she took to Twitter her experience and asked women to ensure their number never gets circulated on media even if it is an emergency because men do not even factor that when they want to harass.

Pakistani dramas have received a lot of recognition all over the world, especially in the last few years. Shows made in the Pakistani industry do not have a high budget at all in comparison to Indian, Turkish, and others. Despite it, Pakistani dramas have received fame due to their compelling stories and straightforward portrayal of life onscreen.

Today, we look at some of the Pakistani dramas which had the best endings:

1. Zindagi Gulzar Hai

HUM TV aired Zindagi Gulzar Hai in 2012. We must say that it had the best storyline in the recent history of Pakistani dramas. Zindagi Gulzar Hai had an incredibly talented cast, including the linked of Fawad Khan, Sanam Saeed, Shehryar Munawwar, Mehreen Raheel, Hina Bayat, Samina Peerzada, and others.

The drama had a beautiful ending for Saam Saeed and Fawad Khan’s characters. The story of Sanam Saeed’s Kashaf came into a full circle with her realizing how beautiful life is and how grateful she is for all of this.

2. Humsafar

 

Humsafar was the most popular drama of its time. It was aired in 2011 and also was the first Pakistani drama to be featured in cinemas. Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan rose to new heights of fame through Humsafar. The show was written by Farhat Ishtiaq and directed by Sarmad Khoosat.

The drama had a great ending with Ashar and Khirad reuniting. Fawad nailed the last episode with his acting in the scene where Ashar stood up to his mother for Khirad.

3. Udaari

 

Udaari raised many important issues, including child sexual abuse. It also explored the class differences and rural and urban differences in terms of opportunities and mindset. Udaari’s cast included Farhan Saeed, Urwa Hocane, Samiya Mumtaz, and Ahsan Khan. Farhat Ishtiaq wrote the story, and Ehteshamuddin directed the drama.

The drama came to an end with Zebo getting justice, Imtiaz being prosecuted for his crime, and Arsh and Mira being engaged to marry. Moreover, the show had an incredible ending with Zebo and her mother being financially independent and starting their own business.

Udaari served a great purpose to educate people about child abuse. It was a much-needed drama on this concerning topic.

4. Ye Dil Mera

 

Ye Dil Mera is another Farhat Ishtiaq blockbuster. Apart from having a talented cast, the drama had great storytelling. It revolved around the lives of Noor ul Ain and Aman.

The best thing about its ending is that it didn’t follow the same route other dramas follow:

The guy does something terrible -> He realizes it in the end -> asks the girl for forgiveness and earns it.

On the contrary, in Yeh Dil Mera, Noor ul Ain did not forgive Aman for using her to get his revenge. Mahira Khan also acknowledged this change in one of her interviews.

Remembering The Legendary Moin Akhtar With 5 Most Iconic Characters

Humour and satire are the two human emotions that keep people going through the worst of times. There are very few people who master this art of satire, who take up the responsibility to make people laugh at their deprivations.

Moin Akhtar was indeed one of those men who remain unparalleled because today as we observe his 5th death anniversary, he continues to make us laugh and smile. We honour this great man who was brilliant at acting, impersonating, mimicking and most importantly spreading happiness across millions of faces.

Here are five legendary roles played by the man himself that are imprinted forever in our minds

1. Female Artist by Rozi

A creation of Imran Aslam, Rozi is an all-time classic drama in which Moin Akhtar has played the role of a female artist.

The drama was an adaptation of a Hollywood film, “Tootsie” and his role won him critical appreciation and was loved by all because of the hilarious depiction of female gender.

2. The Author In Half-Plate

Moin Akhtar’s role as an author in Anwer Maqsood’s Half Plate was one of his most outstanding performances ever.

The role which depicted the plight of literary people who refuse to leave their country versus those who earn foreign currencies was worth lauding upon. This play which had legends like, Khalida Riyasat, Jamshed Ansari and Lateef Kapadia is immensely popular till date.

3. The Poet In Angan-Terha

Again directed by Anwar Maqsood, the drama which had Shakeel and Bushra Ansari in the lead only featured Moin Akhtar in one of the episodes but so symbolic was his role as a poet that when Anagan Terha was reenacted in theatre, the role of the poet was also incorporated.

As a disillusioned poet, one of the most comical scene still remembered was when Begum Jahan Ara slaps the poet to get him going. His much memorable lines are still quoted by many, “Jo kaha tha main ne sach tha, jo suna tha who nahi tha”

4.  The Miser in Such-Much

Such Much, which came much after the dramas mentioned above, portrayed Moin Akhtar as a wealthy but stingy businessman who was always caught up between his two wives.

His accent which had a Memoni touch to it was very popular among people who especially tried to copy his very unique laughter.

5. Transvestite in Loose-Talk

Relatively new, “Loose-Talk”, which had the duo of Anwar Maqsood and Moin Akhtar was perhaps one of those shows which made sure that the newer generation knew who Moin Akhtar was.

With hundreds of characters ranging from a poor labourer to a politician to a dictator, Moin Akhtar did all. He even became a transvestite in one of the episodes and laughingly made all of us realize the actual problems of the lot which is a taboo in our society.

Mentioning five roles won’t do justice to the artist Moin Akhtar was but these shows changed the course of Pakistani television history and it was because of his excellence in  comic roles that  Pakistani artists are popular cross-border too.

Time waits for none and doesn’t care to miss people but there are a few, like Moin Akhtar who have the gifted ability to freeze time through their magical performances.

He came, he saw, he spread happiness and he left.
