Despite the observed improvements, the SBP has kept its initial projection for economic growth unchanged at 2-3% for fiscal year 2023-24. While this aligns closely with the International Monetary Fund’s forecast of 2.5%, it falls short of the government’s more ambitious target of 3.5%. In the preceding fiscal year, FY23, a combination of cooling measures and devastating floods resulted in a mere 0.3% economic growth, making it the third-lowest growth rate in seven decades.

Global economic prospects for 2023 have improved compared to earlier projections, as noted in the July 2023 World Economic Outlook. Afghanistan delivered a spectacular performance, excelling in both batting and bowling to hand Pakistan a surprising eight-wicket defeat in the World Cup 2023.

Pakistan’s performance in the field was lackluster, allowing easy boundaries for Afghanistan’s openers.

It took Afghanistan just 15.3 overs to breach the 100-run mark. By that time, both Ibrahim and Gurbaz had brought up their fifties.

Pakistan’s first wicket only came in the 22nd over, when Afridi induced a top edge off Gurbaz’s blade that was snapped up by deep third.

Gurbaz exhibited an impressive performance, hitting nine boundaries and a six in his 53-ball knock. Meanwhile Zadran showcased his skills with 10 boundaries off 113 deliveries before giving a catch behind off Hasan Ali with 93 runs still needed.

Rahmat and Shahidi ensured that Afghanistan maintained their composure, with Rahmat hitting five fours and two sixes during his 84-ball stay at the crease.

In the earlier innings, Azam displayed an elegant half-century to lead his team to a competitive total after choosing to bat first.

Star Australian women’s player Alyssa Healy has recently undergone finger surgery after suffering a dog bite during an attempt to intervene in a scuffle between her dogs.

Describing her injury as resembling “a crime scene,” Healy explained that the operation successfully repaired a severed artery.

The incident occurred during a playful interaction between the two puppies she shares with her husband, Australian paceman Mitchell Starc, which escalated beyond their usual rough play. Healy unfortunately found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“When I pulled my finger out initially, I thought I was in strife,” she admitted. “I think there was an artery involved which probably made it look more like a crime scene than it needed to be. It was quite gory.”

Healy is set to consult with surgeons again on Thursday to get a clearer understanding of her ‘dog bite’ injury. If regular captain Meg Lanning returns, Healy is expected to resume her role as deputy. Otherwise, Tahlia McGrath might take the reins.

This latest injury is on the opposite index finger from the one Healy fractured twice during Australia’s tour of England and Ireland in June and July.

Domestic Gas Tariff Hike Ahead of Winter

The proposal, brought forth by the Petroleum Division, includes a substantial 200% hike in gas tariffs and a 172% increase in gas prices for domestic consumers, with the aim of implementing these changes ahead of the winter season. This decision is expected to impact various categories of gas consumers, including both protected and non-protected consumers.

Impact on Non-Protected Consumers

For non-protected consumers, the monthly fixed charges are set to increase significantly, with a 334.78% hike up to Rs2,000, alongside a 172% increase in the base tariff. In terms of consumption, the plan involves a Rs100 increase for those using 0.25 cubic meters monthly, rising to Rs300 per mmBtu for consumers using 0.60 cubic meters, and Rs600 per mmBtu for those in the 100-150 cubic meter range. The rates continue to rise, reaching Rs1,500 per mmBtu for those consuming 400 cubic meters.

Sector-Wide Implications

For export units, the suggested hike varies from Rs950 to Rs2,050 per mmBtu, while non-export units could see an increase from Rs1,400 to Rs2,600 per mmBtu. The CNG sector, which plays a significant role in Pakistan’s transportation, may witness an increase to Rs2,595 per mmBtu.

The recommendations extend to various industries, including the cement sector, which could face a hike of Rs2,900 per mmBtu, while the CNG sector may experience a notable adjustment to Rs4,400 per mmBtu. However, the proposal maintains the current prices for power generation units and tandoors.

IMF’s Urgent Call for Tariff Increase

It is worth noting that the IMF had previously urged Pakistan to “immediately raise” gas tariffs, emphasizing the necessity of a 100% increase to alleviate losses and reduce circular debt within the gas sector. The IMF’s concern was communicated during a virtual meeting with Pakistan’s finance ministry officials.

Bombay High Court Stands By Pakistani Artists’ Rights To Work In India

The Bombay High Court has dismissed a plea attempting to bar Pakistani artists from working in India. The petition, initiated by Faaiz Anwar Qureshi, a member of the film industry and an artist, had called on the Indian government to prevent artists from Pakistan, encompassing actors, musicians, singers, lyricists, and technicians, from engaging in collaborations or employment within India.

India’s Ban On Pakistani Actors

As per reports, the plea referred to the resolution adopted by the All-Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) following the Pulwama attacks. As well as parallel resolutions by the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association (IMPPA) and the Federation of Western Indian Cine Employees (FWICE). These resolutions called for the exclusion of Pakistani artists from the Indian film industry. Furthermore, the MNS Cinema Wing, established by Raj Thackeray, cautioned filmmakers against engaging Pakistani artists.

The Verdict

A division bench comprising Justice Sunil B. Shukre and Justice Firdosh P. Pooniwalla emphatically expressed that the petition was deemed a “backward move in fostering cultural harmony, unity, and peace” and found no merit in it.

Advocate Vibhav Krishna, on behalf of the petitioner, contended that allowing Pakistani artists to work in India could result in bias against Indian artists. He argued that the favorable treatment offered to Pakistani artists in India is not mirrored for Indian artists in Pakistan. According to Krishna, the ban is crucial to prevent the potential exploitation of commercial opportunities by Pakistani artists in India. This might deprive Indian artists of equivalent opportunities.

Emphasizing the concept that art knows no boundaries and has the power to unite people, the court underlined that being a patriot doesn’t require harboring hostility toward individuals from foreign nations, even neighboring ones. They contended that a genuine patriot is someone who is altruistic, dedicated to their country, and a person of goodwill.
