The Supreme Court has issued the order to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) for the removal of all billboards mounted on the footpaths of the city.

All substandard and dangerous hoardings rooted  allegedly by the approval of Pakistan Coast Guards will be confiscated as they are a source disturbance to drivers and are a major reason for accidents in the city.

“The KMC shall uproot the billboards, which are claimed to have been installed with the permission of the Pakistan Coast Guards. This order shall be complied by the KMC within one week from today”, said the order passed by Supreme Court.

All  accountable federal, provincial and local land officers have been directed to appear before a three-member bench to submit reports regarding their issuance of license for outdoor billboards.

With around 17 agencies that allow the setting up of billboards in the metropolis, notices have been sent to their offices to appear in court on the next date of hearing.

“Mostly, these billboards and hoardings are installed by encroaching footpaths and roads and are a danger to the pedestrians and vehicles plying on roads. Some of the billboards even obstruct the view of the drivers,” said the Supreme Court judges.
