Pakistan Hockey Hero Seeks Heart Transplant In India

Pakistan’s World Cup winning field hockey goalkeeper Mansoor Ahmed Monday reached out to India for help in securing a heart transplant — despite years of breaking his rivals’ “hearts on the field”.

The 49-year-old has been suffering for weeks from complications stemming from a pacemaker and stents implanted in his heart.

Ahmed has been a sporting icon in Pakistan since helping the country win the 1994 World Cup in Sydney with his penalty stroke push against the Netherlands in the final.

“I may have broken a lot of Indian hearts on the field of play by beating India in the Indira Gandhi Cup (1989) and in other events but that was sport,” Ahmed told AFP.

“Now I need a heart transplant in India and for that I need support from the Indian government.”

India-Pakistan ties, including sports and cultural contacts, plummeted after the 2008 militant attacks in Mumbai, which New Delhi blamed on Pakistani militant groups.

Despite the strained ties, Pakistanis are eligible to apply for medical visas to India, renowned for its booming medical tourism industry.

Ahmed — who played 338 international matches, participated in three Olympics and various other high-profile events in a career spanning from 1986 to 2000 — said the visa could be a lifesaver.

“Humanity is paramount and I too would be obliged if I get a visa and other help in India” said Ahmed.

Sport has been one of the few avenues to improve relations between the arch rivals, he added.

“We have had a great rivalry and sports have helped on a number of occasions so that should continue,” said Ahmed.

India has suspended most bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan since 2008, with high-profile cricket tours bearing the brunt of the moratorium.

They have, however, continued to play each other in multinational events like the World Cup.

Cannes Film Festival: 10 Red Carpet Fails

The prestigious event may be synonymous with glamour, but the Cannes Film Festival still sees its share of fashion faux pas each year — although these are very often intentional attention-grabbing outfits. With the 71st edition of the French festival just around the corner (May 8-19, 2018), here’s a look at some of the event’s biggest red carpet fails.

Saudi Women Embrace Sports Abayas

Colorful and oozing defiance, a sports-friendly version of the abaya gown was once considered a symbol of cultural rebellion in conservative Saudi Arabia, but it is fast becoming the new normal.

Pictures of female athletes running in the garb in the Red Sea city of Jeddah went viral last month, setting off a new debate on sartorial freedoms for women in a country where the typically all-black, body-shrouding garment is obligatory in public.

Some cultural purists vented fury online, calling it a breach of tradition, but opposition has been largely muted following recent comments from powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that the abaya — any abaya — is not mandatory in Islam.

Until a formal edict comes, however, designers such as Eman Joharjy are cashing in on the growing popularity of the so-called sports abayas, as many women push back against traditional attitudes of equating chastity with the dress code.

“There is a big demand,” Joharjy told AFP at her fashion studio in Jeddah.

“Having them in different colors is empowering.”

Akin to a zippered jumpsuit, sports abayas envelop a woman’s body but offer greater mobility for sporting activities, in contrast to the classic baggy version where tripping on the hem of the flowing garment is a common risk.

The 43-year-old’s designs come in colors like pistachio green, beige and white — more tolerable in the kingdom’s scorching heat — and she uses natural fabrics, including French poplin, that does not cling to a sweating body.

One of the early pioneers of the trend, Joharjy said she was branded a social outlier and jeered by some as “Batman” when she began designing — and donning — sports abayas publicly in 2007.

“There was a little bit of rebellion but I designed it for myself because it’s practical,” she said.

“You zip up and are ready to go.”

– ‘Soccer-themed abayas’ –

Joharjy has defied a popular maxim in Saudi Arabia: “If it’s not black, it’s not an abaya.”

Abayas have evolved over the years, with new patterns, fabrics, and embellishments, and they are sometimes worn in the kingdom with baseball-style caps over headscarves.

The latest fad is an eye-catching ensemble of “soccer-themed abayas” — in the colors of the local teams, a new way for female sporting fans to cheer for their favorite players.

Such fashion trends are gaining momentum amid the kingdom’s liberalization drive, including a historic royal decree allowing women to drive from June and enter sports stadiums for the first time.

The government is also seeking to jump-start women’s sports and is moving toward compulsory physical education classes for girls after a ban was lifted in 2014.

Saudi officials recently announced that women would be able to participate next year in the Riyadh international marathon, previously a male-only event.

Women exercising in public were long a target for the kingdom’s austere religious police, which has largely been neutered in recent years.

And the once-unthinkable idea of doing away with the abaya appears to now be gaining traction.

“The laws are very clear and stipulated in the laws of Sharia: that women wear decent, respectful clothing, like men,” Prince Mohammed told CBS Television last month.

“This, however, does not particularly specify a black abaya. (It) is entirely left for women to decide what type of decent and respectful attire to wear.”

– ‘Modest look’ –

Muslim cleric Sheikh Ahmed bin Qassim al-Ghamdi added a new wrinkle to the debate when he dismissed the long-held view that black was the only color for abayas permissible in Islam.

“The cloak is meant for maintaining a modest look and it does not have to be black,” the former chief of the religious police in the holy city of Mecca, told Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya television last month.

But the risk of a social backlash is real in a society steeped in conservatism.

“They look like cleaners!” a tweet said, in response to viral images of athletes dressed in sports abayas.

“Their purpose is not sports. We have all been running in full body veil,” tweeted another.

Back at Joharjy’s studio, a longtime client Marwa al-Hadi walked in wearing one of her designs with magenta sneakers.

“Abaya is like the Indian saree, it is part of our identity,” Joharjy told her, as they weighed in on the future evolution of the garment.

“But at the same time, if God did not want women to do sports, we would not have muscles or a body.”

Hadi nodded.

“It is no one’s business to stop and question what I’m wearing,” she said.

Rashid, Tamim & Shakib Confirmed for ICC World XI Team to Play the Windies at Lord’s

Top-ranked bowler Rashid Khan of Afghanistan and Bangladesh stars Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal have confirmed their participation for the ICC World XI which will play a Twenty20 International against the Windies at Lord’s on 31 May.

Rashid, who is ranked number one on the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Player Rankings and is second in the list of One Day International bowlers, will be one of many big names to watch in the Lord’s match, which is being organised to raise funds for stadia in the Caribbean which were damaged due to hurricanes last year.

Shakib, the top-ranked all-rounder in ODIs and third in T20Is, and left-handed opener Tamim also come in with huge reputations and Bangladesh fans would be following their fortunes with interest. The trio joins three other Asians who have already confirmed for the match – Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik and Thisara Perera of Sri Lanka.

More big names are likely to be confirmed in the coming days for the ICC World XI side, which is being led by England’s limited overs captain Eoin Morgan.

Rashid Khan said: “It is a matter of great honour and pride for me and my country that I have been chosen to support one of cricket’s oldest and most loyal members. I don’t think it will be incorrect to say that a number of cricketers from this and previous generations were inspired and attracted to cricket due to the heroics of the West Indies sides of the 70s, 80s and 90s. And if the West Indies are now looking upon us for help, then there shouldn’t be a hesitation for even a second.

“Apart from my cricket obligations and responsibilities, the incentive of playing in this great match at the Home of Cricket at the age of 19, with and against some of the best cricketers of this generation, is just too tempting, irresistible and an icing on the cake.

“I urge all cricket fans and supporters to join hands with the match organisers and the players in making 31 May a hugely successful day so that the funds raised from this match can be reinvested into cricket that, in turn, will not only bring the smiles back on the faces of local cricket supporters but will also lead to the resumption of cricket activities in those regions.”

Tamim Iqbal said: “Cricket is a sport which unites people, bridges gaps, and in which players and teams support each other. This match is a testament to this statement and I am delighted to have been chosen to once again represent the ICC World XI for a cause which will only make cricket a bigger and better sport.

“The West Indies’ contribution to the global game is unmatched and unparalleled, and if the cricket fraternity can get together to play a small role in the rebuilding of their damaged venues following last year’s hurricanes, then this is a very small price with hugely positive results.

“Playing at Lord’s is itself a great honour for any cricketer. My only international appearance there was in 2010, so I look forward to reliving those memories. Playing with and against some of the best cricketers of this era will only make this occasion better and more memorable.”

The Windies, reigning ICC World Twenty20 champions, are being led by Carlos Brathwaite and the side includes other top names like Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Samuel Badree and Andre Russell.

The tickets for the match are available at https://tickets.lords.org/ with all proceeds going towards rebuilding and renovating five major venues as well as other community cricket facilities that were damaged by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

The venues that will benefit include the Ronald Webster Park in Anguilla, the Sir Viv Richards Stadium in Antigua, the Windsor Park Stadium in Dominica, the A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground in the British Virgin Islands and the Carib Lumber Ball Park in St. Maarten.

Samsung Galaxy S10 or Galaxy X Rumored Specs and Features

Here are the speculated specs and features that the Samsung Galaxy S10 or Galaxy X might have:

Display

The Samsung Galaxy S10 or Galaxy X is speculated to flaunt a next-generation OLED screen and a screen-to-body ratio that might be greater than 93 percent. Though there are no extensive details about the upcoming smartphone’s display, it is believed that the resolution will be the same as what the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S8 have. What Samsung might be planning is to lessen the bezels from the top frame, sides, and chin to give the handset a truly bezel-less appearance.

Super Kabaddi League 2018 Players Draft & Live Updates

Processor

When it comes to the processor, it is anticipated that the Samsung Galaxy S10 or Galaxy X will be engineered by Snapdragon 855. This chipset could be the first SoC to be invented on the innovative 7nm process. Meanwhile, the Exynos equivalent will be the successor of the Exynos 9810, which is allegedly named Exynos 9820. Additionally, there were also rumors stating that Samsung would be integrating its in-house GPU solution along with the CPU.

RAM and Memory

RAM and memory wise, rumors suggest that the Samsung Galaxy S10 or the Galaxy X might be the first flagship device from the South Korean tech company to feature the LPDDR5 memory. Incorporating this piece of technology would lead to better battery life for the users. For the RAM, we might see 6GB and 8GB RAM variants and this might be a good idea to enhance the UI.

Other Features

Apart from the possible specs and features that are mentioned above, Bell has tipped that at least three tech companies are working hand in hand to develop Samsung Galaxy S10 or Galaxy X’s in-display fingerprint reader technology.

The companies that are working for this to be possible are the Qualcomm, Synaptics, and Aegis Tech. Fascinatingly, these firms aren’t only concentrated on an under-screen fingerprint scanner.

In fact, there’s also a possibility that the Galaxy S10 might also feature a 3D camera sensing technology that’s similar to the Face ID system of the Cupertino-based tech company’s iPhone X.

As of this moment, these are the alleged specs and features of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 or Galaxy X. Since these are just speculations it is advised that the aforementioned details will be taken with a grain of salt. Always keep an eye for further updates regarding the forthcoming flagship handset from Samsung.

This Powerful Reel on Calcium Awareness with Ayesha Khan, Bushra Ansari & Shaan Is a Must Watch

Pakistani women are taking matters into their hands and proving their mettle in everything
they do. Gone are the days when the subcontinental woman was portrayed as a docile, frail
figure that always lived in her husband’s shadow.

They are stronger, brilliant, more accomplished and career-oriented than ever before and no longer define the word ‘weaker sex’ in the dictionary.

But wait, there’s a catch!

In their quest to conquer all realms of life, and usually playing the primary caretakers, women seem to have forgotten about self-care. Their consistent dedication to their loved ones, work, and home often makes them careless about their health and diet.

One of the most common health problems that the modern-day woman suffers from is the calcium deficiency. Here’s an eye-opening statistic that points towards the gravity of the situation: 1 in every 2 women in Pakistan suffers from calcium deficiency.

All the biological changes that women go through including pregnancy can take a toll on their bodies and most importantly, their bones. In order to keep their bones in prime condition, taking calcium supplements is a small yet impactful lifestyle change women can make for a stronger future.

Enter GSK’s Calcium Awareness Campaign

In a bid to educate women about the importance of taking calcium supplements,
GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare has rolled out a powerful campaign to address the most critical yet neglected health need of every Pakistani woman.

Featuring the icon of femininity, Ayesha Khan, the evergreen Bushra Ansari and the bona fide patriot, Shaan Shahid, the ad sparks a much-needed conversation to make women aware about bone health with a clear call to action.

Calcium Kee Aadat

Don’t wait till it’s too late!Make calcium supplements a part of your lifestyle to stay strong today and even stronger, tomorrow!#CalciumKeeAadat

Posted by CaC 1000 PLUS on Saturday, March 31, 2018

The campaign highlights how women can protect themselves from becoming a victim of
calcium deficiency by incorporating supplements into their daily routine.

The powerful reel highlights the unwavering strength and tenacity of a woman and how she
accomplishes every goal she sets her eyes on. GSK’s calcium awareness initiative communicates the importance of self-care for women because strong women make a strong foundation for their family and for the society.

It is to be noted that this isn’t the first time that the brand has kick-started its dynamic
movement against calcium deficiency in Pakistani women. Last year, Sarwat Gillani, Aamina
Sheikh, Zeba Bakhtiar, and Nadia Hussain were GSK’s torchbearers for their calcium awareness campaign.

Let’s join hands with the GSK to spread its message on this matter so no woman ever falls prey to calcium deficiency or osteoporosis.

Anwar Maqsood’s ‘Anwarnama’ Apologizes for Racist Skit!

Anwar Maqsood has definitely stirred up a hornet’s nest with a video from his latest web-series, ‘Anwarnama’.

The controversial comedy received backlash from all over the social media for targeting Sindhis. The video quickly went viral and after the negative comments that started pouring in.

https://youtu.be/UmvA3pOnN5M

Popular singer and comedian, Ali Gul Pir voiced his disapproval through his tweet.

Apart from Ali, comedian Mooro too was seen bashing the video through his tweet.

The backlash from the video, however, led Anwar Maqsood to later retract the video and issue a public apology.

Speaking to SAMAA TV, he said:

I love the soil of Sindh which is why I have never left it. Some of my friends from Sindh are upset because of what I did. I want to apologize to the ones who are hurt.

He revealed that the part he had acted out was meant for the late comedian, Moin Akhtar. He went on to describe Moin  Akhtar as the most versatile actor of all time and called him a legendary actor.

Whatever I wrote down, Moin brought it to life. He was the biggest actor in both India and Pakistan

The apology seemed to mollify Ali Gul Pir who later tweeted his appreciation for the comedian.

However, it seems that the issued apology was not enough to soothe the bruised sentiments of the viewers for they took to Twitter to express their anger.

However, some of his loyal fans stood up for him and forgave him after he issued his apology!

Prince William’s Wife Kate in Hospital in Labour

Kate, the wife of Britain’s Prince William, was admitted to hospital in London on Monday in the early stages of labor, Kensington Palace announced.

Kate, the wife of Britain’s Prince William, was admitted to hospital in London on Monday in the early stages of labor, Kensington Palace announced.

The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting her third child, after Prince George and Princess Charlotte. The baby will be fifth in line to the British throne.

The 36-year-old was admitted to the private Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in central London, where George, four, and two-year-old Charlotte were born.

She was accompanied by William, their Kensington Palace home said in a statement. The hospital is a mile (less than two kilometers) from the palace.

“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London earlier this morning in the early stages of labor,” the statement said.

“The Duchess traveled by car from Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital with The Duke of Cambridge.”

Royal fanatics have been camped outside the hospital wing for several days in anticipation.

A night at the Lindo Wing costs £7,500 ($10,500, 8,550 euros), including a delivery package and two-room suite, excluding consultants’ fees.

The baby will be the sixth great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II, who turned 92 on Saturday, and her husband Prince Philip.

It will hold the title of prince or princess after Queen Elizabeth changed the rules in 2012 to ensure that all of William’s children would be entitled to the style.

– Name speculation –

As with their two previous children, the royal couple do not know whether the baby is a boy or a girl.

Bookmakers have Mary, Alice, Victoria, Alexandra and Maria as the favourite girls’ names, with Arthur, Albert, Frederick, James and Philip the most popular boys’ names.

If the baby is a boy, it will no longer overtake Charlotte in the line of succession due to new laws agreed across the 16 Commonwealth realms where Queen Elizabeth is the head of state, including Canada, Australia, and Jamaica.

Under the law, designed to end male primogeniture for William’s children, any boys born after October 28, 2011, could not overtake their elder sisters.

Kate is being cared for by consultant obstetrician Guy Thorpe-Beeston, who is the surgeon-gynecologist to the royal household, and consultant gynecologist Alan Farthing, the Queen’s surgeon-gynaecologist — part of the trusted team who delivered George and Charlotte.

William, who is destined to become king after his father Prince Charles, and Kate met at St. Andrews University in Scotland. They married at Westminster Abbey in London on April 29, 2011.

The birth will be announced in both traditional and modern fashion.

A proclamation will be placed on an easel in the grounds of Buckingham Palace for the public to see. At the same time, Kensington Palace will release the news on its Twitter feed.

The birth will be celebrated with a 41-gun salute in London’s Hyde Park — the standard 21 rounds with an extra 20 because it is a royal park.

The Tower of London will fire 62 rounds: 21, plus 20 because it is a royal palace, and a further 21 because it is in the historic City of London.

Shoaib Malik & Sania Mirza Announce Pregnancy of ‘Mirza Malik’

She gave reference of an ad for a hair removal cream, saying that it was what pushed her to open up about this topic.

In the post, Mir says she was offered a “campaign by a company promoting a hair removal cream”, however, she refused it. The cricketer says the ad for both Pakistan and India was “magnifying a girl’s concern about how she looks on a basketball court”.

She continued to add that campaigns which body shame women do not show how strong or talented they are leading to questions like “are the talent, passion, and skill of a girl, not enough for her to play sports?”

Reaching out to young girls aspiring to take up sports, she says, “Make no mistake: you need strong arms, not smooth arms, on a sports field.”

In her 12-year long career as a sportswoman, Mir has rejected several promotional campaigns which have somehow been affiliated with directly and indirectly shaming women.

“I request all sponsors and celebrities to ensure that when we engage young girls to fulfil their dreams, we show them a path that gives them actual confidence rather than disabling them by making them self-conscious.”

Many of her followers applauded the Pakistani sportswoman and thanked her for lifting their spirits while referring to her as a real role model and idol for girls.

We all love Hassan Ali for his performance on the field, however, this time around, the young Pakistani fast bowler is under fire for a stunt he pulled at Wagah Border which has ignited fumes within the Indian Army.

Ali walked up to the gate during the ceremony and displayed his signature move, which he usually does after taking wickets.

Do Darya Closing Down: Reason Revealed Causes An Uproar!

One of the biggest shocks that Karachiites woke up to over the weekend was the news of Do Darya closing down after Ramadan.

The city’s famous tourist and dining spot, Do Darya has been a forever favorite amongst the locals to enjoy fine cuisine and enjoy the stunning view of the sea.

One of the busiest areas for delicious food and relaxing environment, the news has caused an uproar over social media with locals voicing their thoughts on this decision.

But why has DHA decided To Shut down Do Darya?

This is a question that has baffled many over the weekend.

If you remember, back in 2015, DHA had issued a similar warning to the restaurant owners to wind up their business; however, the issue had been resolved.

But this time, the decision seems to be final and according to reports, the reasoning behind this decision seems to vary.

While there are some that report that a new sports complex and entertainment center is being planned; other reports cite that the land has been taken by a foreign investment group to construct underwater restaurants and high rise buildings.

While the official reason behind this shocking decision has not yet come forward, there are plenty of people who have decided to step up and voice their thoughts on the matter.

Twitterverse is clearly heartbroken over the news.

Are you as heartbroken by this news as we are?

HSY’s ‘Mohabbat Nama’, Redefines the Solo Show Experience!

Pakistan’s iconic couturier HSY celebrated his 24 years of fashion with a first of its kind solo show experience in his home city of Lahore on 21st of April; showcasing Mohabbat Nama, HSY Couture.

The celebratory collection was presented against a historic backdrop at the historic Haveli of Wajid Ali Shah, Lahore.

The experience was inaugurated with a moving narration of the words of Faiz Ahmed Faiz on Lahore as narrated by his daughter, artist Salima Hashmi.

Then, set to a soundtrack of some of Pakistan’s most iconic music through the years, HSY’s Mohabbat Nama came to life with over 70 models adorned in HSY couture, with superstar and HSY muse Reema Khan closing the show. Each outfit worn has been named after the model wearing it in tribute to them and their careers. Indeed the show also featured those part of the HSY 24 year legacy journey; from original supermodels ZQ, Natasha Hussain, Simi Pasha, Vaneeza Ahmed, Abdullah Ejaz,  and Andleeb Rana; to Nael Ahmed and longtime collaborator and stylist Shahzad Raza and HSY’s first ever model, his sister.

The event was managed by Jalal Salahuddin Events, PR by Lotus Client Management and Public Relations, Catering partner Cosa Nostra, videography by Videographers, Photography by Team Dragonfly, Airline Partner Shaheen Airlines, Makeup Partner Nabila N-PRO, Logistics partner Re-START Branding Solutions, Hospitability partner Faletti’s Hotel, Backstage management by Production 021, Transport Partner Destinatons, Music by Jamal Rahman, Event Tech by Saad Hayat, Campaign videos by Filumbaaz, Paragon studios and 1947 (Hiba & Adil), Security by SSB Squad, On Ground Support by Walled City Authority.

“Mohabbat Nama or love letter is my tribute to my city with its legacy, tradition and heritage presented as an entire show ‘experience’.  This evening steeped in the romance of Lahore, was hosted in a haveli over 250 years old and favoured by the fifth King of Oudh. Based in the walled city of Lahore, the haveli is immersed in its own history of the Nawab’s courts, its romance, intrigues, poetry, dance, architecture and ambition, all of which for me presented the perfect palatte for this collection. Every element of the show had been curated: each look, each outfit, each model, each walk, each sound, light, projection; the culinary experience; the music experience.

Mohabbat Nama is then also equally a journey of my evolution as I am myself a Musafir of time; It is a show where I looked to my past and the HSY legacy; where we started with our first collections, solo shows, shoots, models, make-up artists, stylists, incorporating all of these elements within the show. Each outfit in this show has been created bespoke, for each model and personality in the show; creating harmony between the fashion and the person who wears it; for at HSY a model is not simply someone who wears what is put on them but rather an architect of her own style and elegance.” said Hassan Sheheryar Yasin.

Mohabat Nama is an HSY couture collection with all motifs and accessories made in Pakistan by Team HSY.
