Chinese Automaker Joylong to Enter Pakistan

Jiangsu Joylong Automobile Co Limited’s subsidiary, Joylong Pakistan, has announced to bring light commercial vehicles within the country.

These vehicles will be supplied to Pakistan’s transportation sector with completely built units (CBUs) from China.

During an interview with the Express Tribune, Joylong Pakistan’s Chairman, Rehan Maghani said;

“We have decided to target the commercial aspect of Pakistan’s auto industry after thorough studies by both our Pakistani and Chinese counterparts,”

“The variants we are offering have added features with half the price of currently available commercial vans; this will definitely break the monopoly of Japanese manufacturers,” -Rehan Meghani

The Chinese manufacturer is planning to introduce 4 different light commercial vehicle variants including passenger vans and a coaster. The plus point is that they would cost nearly half the amount of what Japanese vehicles cost in the markets.

In Pakistan’s automotive market, Meghani is the sole dealer of Joylong and has previously been associated with other renowned auto brands as well.

During the interview, he added that if China is becoming the new hub for global automotive manufacturers, Pakistan should take advantage of this.

“Pakistan’s commercial vehicle market was largely dominated by European and American brands till the 1970s. Then entered the Japanese auto manufacturers, who offered better quality and low pricing. After almost 40 years of monopoly by Japanese brands in the commercial sector, it is now China which will become the next in-thing for Pakistan,” –Meghani said

“China is also manufacturing high quality vehicles especially for export-oriented markets,” he added.

Initially, the brand is planning to roll out at least 150 units per annum, and then increase their units gradually after observing the potential market. This might be a helpful resource for Pakistan’s tourism sector and public transport sector as well as there are very limited transportation facilities available for both.

“Our long-term plan for Pakistan didn’t include increasing the CBU numbers only, we will closely monitor the markets and will go for production after three years of business and experience in Pakistan,” Meghani said.

Heatwave in Karachi: At least 65 Reported Dead from Heatstroke

The rising temperature in Karachi has taken a toll on the life of the locals, resulting in the death of 65 people, reports Dawn News.

Faisal Edhi of the Edhi Foundation told Dawn that amongst 114 bodies brought in to the foundation’s morgues in Karachi’s Korangi and Sohrab Goth area in the past three days, 65 of them had passed away due to the heatstroke.

“Most of the citizens who died from the heatstroke were residents of Landhi and Korangi”

He also added that most of these heatstroke victims had died at their homes with ages varying between six to 78 years.

Faisal Edhi added:

“People did not get medical help on time, which resulted in their death”

He further highlighted the magnitude of the crisis by saying that while the morgue in Korangi receives 10-11 bodies per day.  However, since Saturday that count has increased to 34 bodies while the morgue in Sohrab Goth had received 30 bodies. Most of these victims lost their lives while going about doing daily chores”.

However, Sindh Health Secretary Dr. Fazlullah Pechuho denied the notion that these deaths had resulted due to the ongoing heat stroke in Karachi.

“Only doctors and hospitals can decide whether the cause of death was heat stroke or not. I categorically reject that people have died due to heat stroke in Karachi”

According to him, Karachi had not received a single heat stroke patient during the last three days.

This news comes at a time when locals are struggling in Ramadan due to the extreme heat. With the temperatures expected to remain high, reaching around 44 degrees Celsius; residents have been advised by the government to take precautions by staying hydrated and remain indoors as much as possible.

‘Deadpool 2’ Topples ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ at Box Office!

Another weekend, another $100-million-plus superhero opening: This time it was 20th Century Fox’s “Deadpool 2,” with a $125.5 million take in North American theaters and a huge debut overseas, box office tracker Exhibitor Relations said Monday.

The movie, the 11th installment in the X-Men series based on characters from Marvel Comics, netted $174.9 million abroad, the biggest foreign debut ever for an R-rated title.

The movie features Ryan Reynolds playing the foul-mouthed and irreverent title character as he forms an X-Force team to protect a young mutant from the evil Cable (Josh Brolin).

For an uber-bad guy, Brolin is having a very good week. He also plays world-destroying villain Thanos in Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War,” which led North American ticket sales before “Deadpool” bumped it off.

“Avengers” — the fourth highest-grossing film in history, starring Robert Downey Jr., Benedict Cumberbatch, Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth — took $29.5 million, pushing its global take past $1.8 billion.

Third in theaters was Paramount’s new rom-com “Book Club,” at $13.6 million. The film stars Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen as aging friends who decide to read the steamy “Fifty Shades of Grey” and find it expanding their literary and personal horizons.

In fourth was “Life of the Party,” a Warner Bros. comedy, at $7.6 million. Melissa McCarthy, who co-wrote the script with her husband, director Ben Falcone, plays a newly divorced mother who returns to the college she dropped out of, where her daughter now studies.

And in fifth was the Universal thriller “Breaking In,” at $6.8 million. Online reviews collator Rotten Tomatoes, summing up the critical reaction, described the film as a “disposable action thriller.”

But critics praised Gabrielle Union’s performance as a mother trying to protect her children from hostage-takers.

Barack & Michelle Obama Sign Netflix Production Deal

Barack and Michelle Obama have entered into a multi-year agreement to produce films and series with Netflix, the world’s leading internet entertainment service announced on Monday.

The former first couple have launched Higher Ground Productions to produce a variety of content for the video streamer, possibly including scripted series, documentaries and features.

“One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” Obama, who served two terms in the White House from 2009, said in a statement.

“That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix. We hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.”

The Obamas already have a large social media presence — a combined 150 million followers on Twitter and Instagram — but the deal will see their influence boosted significantly by Netflix’s 125 million subscribers in 190 countries.

“Barack and Michelle Obama are among the world’s most respected and highly-recognized public figures and are uniquely positioned to discover and highlight stories of people who make a difference in their communities and strive to change the world for the better,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

The statement didn’t discuss money, but their time in the White House has already begun to reap lucrative dividends for the Obamas, who negotiated book deals last year reportedly worth more than $60 million.

A much-awaited memoir by Michelle Obama is due to be released on November 13, publisher Penguin Random House said in February, describing her as “one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era.”

The Obamas met while he was an intern and adviser at a Chicago law firm, and they were soon married. She became his closest confidante during his political rise.

Michelle used her influence as one of the world’s most high-profile public figures to advocate for the rights of women and girls and campaigned for Americans to live healthier lives.

The Obamas are not planning to use Netflix to counter President Donald Trump or other conservatives, but will focus instead on “storytelling to inspire us, to make us think differently about the world around us, and to help us open our minds and hearts to others,” the former first lady said.

Google Maps Wants to Know What you’re Eating!

Google Maps may now start prompting users to identify and rate food that they’ve photographed at restaurants, according to Australian blog Ausdroid.

It’s not just about where you’re going anymore, it’s also about what you’re eating when you get there.

Google Maps seems to now be requesting users to identify their food and give it a thumbs up or down.

The Ausdroid report displays screenshots and details the prompts that were asked for.

“When you add a new photo, Maps will ask you to name the dish and present you with a fairly comprehensive list of meals as autocomplete options. In the three attempts I made at this, it didn’t recognize ‘pork dim sum’ but did recognize ‘porridge’ and even ‘deep fried ice cream’. After you’ve named the dish, Maps will also ask you to recommend it with a simple thumb up/down rating.”

It’s probably all part of the bigger Google picture.

Google’s recent developer conference I/O revealed a lot about the tech giant’s vision for the future, a lot of it revolving around AI.

Information we provide through clicks, searches and check-ins give Google’s AI technology the ability to learn who we are, where we go and what we like. Although this may feel slightly daunting in regards to privacy, it does come with its advantages.

Rolling out soon on the Google Maps app is a tailor-made “Match” feature that suggests how likely you are to enjoy a place and why. An “explore” tab will keep users updated on what’s hot in their neighborhood, be it dining options, events or activities. Not to mention a “Foodie List”, should you want to follow the tastemakers.

As for labeling and rating your meals, Ausdroid’s seems to be the first report on the feature and remains unconfirmed, but it does seem like something the tech giant would do.

10 Most-visited Museums in the World 2017

Around 8.1 million people stepped through the hallowed halls of the Louvre in Paris last year, making it the most-visited museum in the world for 2017.

That’s according to the latest edition of the Theme Index and Museum Index report, which ranked the most popular attractions around the world by attendance.

While growth among the top 20 museums was relatively flat (0.2 percent growth worldwide between 2016 and 2017), authors note the exceptional performances of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, which saw an impressive 25 percent spike in visitors in 2017, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, which also saw a 23 percent growth over the previous year.

After the Louvre, Beijing’s National Museum of China, and the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, tied with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, round out the podium.

The report was published jointly by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) and engineering firm AECOM.

Authors credit the Louvre’s performance — it saw a 10 percent increase in visits — to Paris’s tourism recovery, following a tumultuous few years of being rocked by terrorist attacks.

They also point to interest in one of the Louvre’s top-selling exhibits “Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting” which was unveiled last year, for its leap to the top spot.

In North America, the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington DC single-handedly helped boost visitor numbers three percent across the region. But a closer look at the figures suggest that when the NMAAHC is taken out of the equation, numbers were relatively flat — a finding that authors speculate could be tied to the decrease in international visitor numbers to the US in 2017.

Bucking the global trend of stagnant numbers, meanwhile, is Asia-Pacific, which recorded the fastest growth in the 2017 Museum Index, at 11 percent year-on-year growth.

An emerging middle class, cultural awareness, disposable income and social media are reasons cited for rising visitor numbers among Chinese museums. China landed seven of the top 20 museums on the index.

Likewise, Japan is singled out as a global leader in the museum sector, thanks to a high level of cultural appreciation among the Japanese, and widespread support for the sector, authors note.

In 2017, more than 11,300 people visited the Tokyo National Museum per day, during its temporary exhibit of 13th-century Japanese artist Unkei’s work, making it the most popular single exhibition of the year.

A quarter of the world’s top 20 exhibitions were also held in Tokyo in 2017.

Exercising 4-5 Days a Week Slows Down Heart Aging: Study

New US research has suggested that to slow down heart aging, exercising four to five days a week for life is ideal.

Carried out by researchers at the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, Dallas and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, the study set out to look at whether the recommended levels of exercise, which suggest four to five 30-minute workouts per week, are enough to slow down aging of the heart and blood vessels.

The team looked at 102 participants over 60 years of age, who had consistently exercised throughout their life.

Participants were categorized into groups depending on their lifelong exercise history, and how many exercise sessions of at least 30 minutes they did each week.

Sedentary was defined as less than two exercise sessions per week, Casual Exercisers were those who did two to three exercise sessions per week, Committed Exercisers managed four to five exercise sessions per week (in line with current guidelines), and Masters Athletes completed six to seven exercise sessions per week.

The team also gathered measures of each participant’s arterial stiffness.

The results showed that those who had a lifelong history of casual exercise (two to three times a week) had more youthful middle-sized arteries, which supply oxygenated blood to the head and neck.

However, those who met the current guidelines and exercised four to five times per week throughout their life not only had more youthful middle-sized arteries but also more youthful large central arteries, which provide blood to the chest and abdomen.

While any form of exercise helps reduce the overall risk of death from heart problems, the new research suggests that the different sizes of arteries are affected differently by varying amounts of exercise, which could be important information for developing long-term exercise programmes.

Benjamin Levine, one of the authors of the study, commented, “This work is really exciting because it enables us to develop exercise programmes to keep the heart youthful and even turn back time on older hearts and blood vessels.”

“Previous work by our group has shown that waiting until 70 is too late to reverse a heart’s ageing, as it is difficult to change cardiovascular structure even with a year of training. Our current work is focusing on two years of training in middle aged men and women, with and without risk factors for heart diseases, to see if we can reverse the ageing of a heart and blood vessels by using the right amount of exercise at the right time”.

The results were published in The Journal of Physiology.

Record-Breaking 100-GBPS Wireless Transmission is the World’s First

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) has successfully demonstrated the world’s first 100Gbps wireless transmission, using a new technology that already surpasses the upcoming 5G standard. But this new tech, called Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) multiplexing, isn’t likely to roll out on a large scale before 2030.

The technical feat was part of NTT’s laboratory experiments. NTT conducted transmission experiments at a distance of 10 meters using a system operating in the 28GHz frequency band.

In total, NTT simultaneously generated 11 data signals, each at a bitrate of 7.2 to 10.8Gbps, achieving large-capacity wireless transmission at 100Gbps — a world first.

This level of wireless capacity reaches a level around 100 times that of LTE and WiFi, and about five times that of 5G, launching in 2020.

In the short-to-medium term, this technology could be used to help boost 5G performances for new domestic uses requiring higher transmission capacities (autonomous and connected vehicles, VR, high-definition video transmission, etc.).

NTT will present the results at Wireless Technology Park 2018 in Tokyo, Japan, May 23-25. Although the concept is still relatively new, the successful experiment paves the way for a host of exceptional possibilities.

Viva Technology 2018: What’s in Store!

With just days to go until the third edition of Viva Technology — held at the French capital’s Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, May 24-26, 2018 — event organizers Publicis Groupe and Groupe Les Échos have unveiled the official program for this global event for innovation, startups and digital transformation. Here’s a look at what’s in store.

This year’s edition of Viva Technology will by far be the most international to date, with more than half of the 1,800 startups attending hailing from outside of France. Startups from some 20 countries — including Israel, Japan and South Korea — will be showing off their latest technology at the event, which this year also focuses on AfricaTech in particular. Young entrepreneurs and tech industry figures from the continent will be heading to the Paris event, along with Rwandan president Paul Kagamé.

Some incredible innovations will be on show at Viva Tech 2018, including IBM’s quantum computer, Airbus’s flying car mock-up, a life-sized spatial module and a host of domestic robots, including live demos.

Former executive chairman of Alphabet, Eric Schmidt — now a company technical advisor and board member — has been a Viva Technology attendee since the show’s first edition. He will return in 2018, joined by an impressive lineup of speakers from around the world, to discuss the latest innovations, breakthroughs and new technologies. These include Facebook CEO and chairman Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, IBM chairman, president and CEO Ginni Rometty, and Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

While the first two days of Viva Technology are reserved for professional attendees, the show opens to the public Saturday, May 26, giving everyone a chance to check out the 150 innovations presented in world premieres at the event. This year’s three major themes are latest-generation robots (watch out for robot battles held during the event), the future of mobility (with self-driving, electric and even flying vehicles) and virtual reality (with virtual group visits of Egypt’s famous pyramids).

The event also has a host of fun events and attractions celebrating technology, including an eSports tournament featuring “Fortnite” experts and a virtual artwork by artist Miguel Chevalier. Young visitors can try their hand at an initiatory hackathon (for 6-to-12-year-olds) or take part in workshops exploring the future of mobility.

Hyundai-Nishat Cars Launch Plan in Pakistan

Nishat group has partnered up with Hyundai to bring some of the international manufacturer’s well-known vehicles to Pakistan under the name Hyundai-Nishat!

The South Korean automotive manufacturer is making a comeback in the markets and is planning to pitch in an investment of Hyundai Nishat-Pakistan $230 Million to produce 10,000 units per annum by 2020.

Hyundai-Nishat wants to then further grow and manufacture 30,000 units per annum by 2024. While the plant is expected to be completed by 2019, we can expect full-fledged operations to kick-off from early 2020.

Hyundai-Nishat Pakistan is reportedly going to launch the pickup truck H100 which is famously known as Shehzore in the local markets. Following the Tucson SUV, Kona, and Elantra.

New UAE Residency Visa Rule is Good News for Pakistanis!

In an attempt to further boost UAE’s position as the primary destination for top talent around the world and international investors, the Cabinet has adopted a new system of entry visas.

Now investors and professionals will be able to get a long term residence visa for up to 10 years!

Not only that, the families of these categories of expatriates will also be receiving the same visa validity.

Apart from that, students who are top performers, will also be eligible for the 10-year visa scheme.

This decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by His His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, further reinforces the UAE’s position as a primary destination for international investors and global talent.

The initial announcement of this move had been sent out via tweet from the official Twitter handle of Shaikh Mohammad.

The new rule was approved by at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Sheikh Mohammad at the Presidential Place in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. Lt. General Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, were also present.

In a statement, Sheikh Mohammad said:

The UAE will remain a global incubator for exceptional talents and a permanent destination for international investors. Our open environment, tolerant values, infrastructure and flexible legislation are the best plan to attract global investment and exceptional talents to the UAE.

This new visa system will not only boost the country’s economic competitiveness globally but will also increase the chances of attracting investors and competencies to the UAE.

According to the system, a 10-year residency visa would be granted for specialists in the research and technical field, medical, scientific as well as scientist and innovators. A five year residency visa for students studying in the UAE would be granted along with a 10 year visa for exceptional students.

The new development is indeed a good news for Pakistanis who are willing to invest in UAE and students who are interested in pursuing education in top varsities of Arabian Peninsula.

Google Pushes Artificial Intelligence for Upgraded News App

For its updated news application, Google is doubling down on the use of artificial intelligence as part of an effort to weed our disinformation and help users get viewpoints beyond their own “filter bubble.”

Google chief Sundar Pichai, who unveiled the updated Google News earlier this month, said the app now “surfaces the news you care about from trusted sources while still giving you a full range of perspectives on events.”

It marks Google’s latest effort to be at the centre of online news and includes a new push to help publishers get paid subscribers through the tech giant’s platform.

According to product chief Trystan Upstill, the news app “uses the best of artificial intelligence to find the best of human intelligence — the great reporting done by journalists around the globe.”

While the app will enable users to get “personalized” news, it will also include top stories for all readers, aiming to break the so-called filter bubble of information designed to reinforce people’s biases.

“Having a productive conversation or debate requires everyone to have access to the same information,” Upstill said.

He said the “full coverage” feed would be the same for everyone — “an unpersonalized view of events from a range of trusted news sources.”

Some journalism industry veterans were sceptical about the effort to replace human editors with machine curators.

“There’s been a fantasy of (algorithmic) personalized news for a long time,” said New York University journalism professor Meredith Broussard.

“Nobody has ever gotten it right. I think that news designers and homepage editors do a good job of curating already.”

Google and Facebook have also been criticized for scooping up most online ad revenues and for enabling false information to spread.

Recently, News Corp. CEO Robert Thomson called for an “algorithm review board” that would “oversee these historically influential digital platforms and ensure that there is no algorithmic abuse or censorship.”

– Changing News Ecosystem –

In the new app, Google’s “news stand” addresses some concerns by allowing users to sign up for subscriptions using their Google accounts, and will enable publishers to connect with readers directly.

Dan Kennedy, a Northeastern University journalism professor, said the revamped news app appears to be positive for the news ecosystem.

“For many years, Google refused to share ad revenues with news organizations on the grounds that Google was driving traffic to them, and that it was up to those organizations to figure out how to monetize that traffic,” Kennedy said.

“Now, with more than 90 percent of all new digital ad revenues going to Google and Facebook, Google is finally acknowledging that it’s time to try something else.”

Nicholas Diakopoulos, a Northwestern University professor specializing in computational and data journalism, said the impact of Google’s changes remain to be seen.

Diakopoulos said algorithmic and personalized news can be positive for “engagement” but may only benefit a handful of news organizations.

His research found that “Google concentrates its attention on a relatively small number of publishers, it’s quite concentrated.”

Google’s effort to identify and prioritize “trusted” news sources may also be problematic, according to Diakopoulos.

“Maybe it’s good for the big guys, or the (publishers) who have figured out how to game the algorithm,” he said. “But what about the local news sites, what about the new news sites that don’t have a long track record?”

Diakopoulos said that while AI can offer some advantages in news curation, “you still need people involved in many different ways. you need to reflect human values, editorial values… you can’t quantify every aspect that might be important to an editorial decision.”

The growing importance of the platforms raise the questions of whether Google and Facebook are “media” companies and not simply technology firms, a moniker both have resisted.

Diakopoulos said Google “is becoming more and more like a media company,” although that is sometimes difficult to define.

“Yahoo started as a tech company and became a media company, and maybe Google is headed in that direction,” he said.

According to a report by Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association, motorbike sales have increased in the first 10 months during the current fiscal year. From July to April, the sales hit 976,492 units whereas they were 817,252 units the previous year.

Also, for the first time, Honda bikes sales crossed 100,000 units in January, March and in April. On the other hand, Suzuki’s sales also went up by 16.8% to 17,811 units in the first 10 months.

The royal wedding happened this weekend and people all over the world cannot stop swooning over the fairytale nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Cashing on this historic moment is our national aviation service, Pakistani International Airline (PIA). The carrier has now extended an invitation to the new couple in town to visit the Northern Areas of the nation.

Giving a throwback to the time Lady Diana came to Pakistan, PIA tweeted that it would be super cool if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex toured our breath-taking destinations.

Sadly, PIA’s move backfired!

While the aviation service tweeted this thinking it is a smart strategy, Twitterverse is having a field day trolling the living daylights out of PIA.

Poor PIA  didn’t see this coming!

The sweet gesture has clearly turned sour for the airline.

People are seizing the chance to vent out against the remorseful service.

New Islamabad Airport Pictures Show Remorseful State of Project Worth Billions

The new Islamabad International Airport was launched with great hopes and a lot of publicity and hoopla. A lot had been claimed for the project worth billions and expectations had been high since the airport had been under construction.

But going by the looks of the new airport, it can be said that sadly, all of it had been for nothing.

Over 29 Million Watched Royal Wedding in US: Monitor

More than 29 million people watched on television in the United States as Britain’s Prince Harry married American actress Megan Markle, according to Nielsen ratings released Sunday.

The estimated 29.2 million viewers for Saturday’s ceremony exceed the number for the 2011 wedding of Harry’s brother Prince William to Kate Middleton, which was watched by 22.8 million people.

Harry and Meghan tied the knot in a ceremony at Windsor Castle, where they were greeted by around 100,000 people lining the streets.

The couple will not be taking a honeymoon immediately, as they are due to attend a charity garden party for Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday.

Power Woes Continue in Karachi

The series of prolonged and unannounced power outages have become a nuisance for Karachiites.

Citizens were forced to have their Sehri in the dark, as load-shedding for as many as seven hours was reported in various localities of the city.

The power shortage was caused by a shortfall of 600-700 megawatts due to the Bin Qasim plant breakdown

However, as per the latest update by K-Electric, the situation is improving and electricity is gradually being restored in the affected areas.

Water Crisis at its Peak

With sizzling heat and ongoing power breakdown, fasting in Ramadan has even become hard for citizens with extreme scarcity of water in the city.

According to Geo News, the falling water level of Keenjhar Lake has resulted in a crisis in Karachi.

The citizens of North Nazimabad, North Karachi and SITE  are suffering the most, with water being absent for the for the past 20 days in the areas.

In light of the adverse situation in town, Board of Intermediate Education Karachi has delayed exams that were to be held on 21, 22 and 23.
