Marks & Spencer To Ramp Up Textile Imports From Pakistan

The British retail company, Marks & Spencer Group, wants to increase its imports of textile products from Pakistan. They plan to bring in items like woven garments, denim, socks, towels, graphic design T-shirts, and polo shirts. To make this happen, experts from Marks & Spencer will visit Pakistan in September to meet with textile mills.

Does this mean that Pakistan’s economy will start benefitting again? Pakistan’s economy has been stuck in the worst downward spiral ever since the pandemic and the political tension that followed. Now it’s high time that Pakistan starts gaining investments.

During a meeting with the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA), the Marks & Spencer Group country manager for Turkey, Unsal Erdogan, expressed their interest in Pakistan’s textile industry. The APTMA Chairman invited Marks & Spencer to open their sourcing offices in Pakistan, believing that it would help Pakistani exports compete with countries like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and boost exports to Europe through the GSP+ facility.

The textile industry in Pakistan has great potential for growth. With the setup of more stitching units, it could increase its exports to $50 billion. The industry benefits from competitive advantages like lower labor wages, the devaluation of the local currency, and a young workforce. Overall, Marks & Spencer’s interest in enhancing imports from Pakistan presents a significant opportunity for the country’s textile sector and its potential for further growth in the international market.

Monsoon is upon us and with the rainy season, the situation of Karachi’s infrastructure has everyone worried.

The Backstory

The torrential rains over the years have wreaked havoc on the infrastructure of Karachi city. Previously, record rainfalls in 2020 and 2022 left the city drowning. One of the highly acclaimed and posh areas of the city, was in shambles after urban flooding destroyed almost everything.

While people were left stranded in their homes with no food and electricity, the damage to properties and houses became inevitable all because the drainage system of DHA and the city wasn’t good enough to handle such a huge amount of rain. Previously monsoon had also harmed a number of the city’s important roadways and about 35 of Karachi Water & Sewerage Board’s sewerage lines.

What Now?

While most of the city is now dug up in an attempt to revamp the city’s infrastructure, DHA on the other hand is underway of construction for the drainage system. The ‘DHA Storm Water Project’ has left the entire area upside down with most of the roads being dug up for renovation of drainage systems.

While previously, Karachi has been drowning due to poor infrastructure, this time people are wondering whether the authorities will be able to finish the construction on time or whether will Karachi flood once again.

Visitors and travelers are falling victim to these incidents, but no arrests have been made so far which shows a lack of attention of authorities and also portrays a bad image of Pakistan and its leaders to the tourists and travelers. Beware 

Since everyone is now on their own and there is no check and balance here are some ways you might fall prey to these robberies. One common method used by thieves is offering sweets and eatables to distract people before stealing their belongings.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has taken notice of this issue and has put up cautionary banners at various spots in the airport, urging people to be vigilant and take care of their belongings themselves. But was this a good enough plan of action to be taken? Or did this hinder Pakistan’s already dying image? Shouldn’t these robbers have been caught? Or shouldn’t the security have been increased? Hauntings are only interesting when you hear them in stories. But when they are actually happening to you, you may not be that excited. Something similar happened to one of our readers, and he shared the story with us. So get ready to hear something told to us by one of our followers.

Hauntings or breeze

This happened right here in Karachi. The story was about an office goer who had to pull an all-nighter at his workplace. Now, pulling an all-nighter is not a new idea or something to frown upon. Most industries, usually news channels and publications, are already 24/7 workplaces while others are only 9 to 5. In 9 to 5 workplaces, out of hundreds, usually, one or two of the staff stays behind when they have to complete a project. So in such a 9 to 5 workplace that we have been told not to name, our follower says he stayed until 3 am. With him was another colleague.

Aside from them, the floor was completely empty and dark. The only lights were on the side the two of them were working. Our follower says that he was rocking his chair a bit while brainstorming, and the designer was busy designing on the computer. Suddenly, from the corner of his eye, he noticed that a chair, three aisles down, was also rocking.

He considered it as being mistaken, so he ignored it because there was no open window. Right at that moment, the same chair smashed into the nearby chair. Startled, he asked his colleague whether he had noticed what just happened.

Jinns…cute?

The colleague who was known to have the sight of the supernatural and was known to almost always pull all-nighters at the office said, “Oh yeah, there are some cute jinns over there who like their presence known.”

With the normal tone, the colleague had replied, the storyteller got scared. To avoid the haunted aisle, he took the back route and just ran out of the office.

Anything haunted makes for a fun dare on a friend’s night. Each city has several haunted places you can explore at your discretion. If you or a friend are in the city, there are several haunted places in Karachi that you must visit if you dare!

1. Karsaz Road’s Bride 

There’s a legend that a young couple in the 1970s was driving home on their wedding night on  Dalmia Road in between Karsaz and Gulistan-e-Johar.

The newly-wed husband was tired and fell asleep behind the wheel. They had a terrible accident in which they died. However, several people have reported the sighting of the bride. A woman dressed in red can be seen by many. People say she lingers there and tries to approach people who stop on the road in the middle of the night. She is assumed to want to relive her last moments with her husband.

This is, in fact, one of the most haunted places in Karachi and if you live in the city, you’re probably already aware of it.

2. Chowkandi Graveyard

The Chowkandi graveyard is located on the National Highway of Karachi. In Pakistan, it is amongst the most ancient cemeteries and is around 600 years old. Although all graveyards are avoided at night, this one mainly makes people afraid. People of Karachi do not go near it after sunset. Nearby residents report a lot of noisy activity in the graveyard at night. Moreover, black magic vessels are most heavily found in this graveyard.

3. Mohatta Palace

The Mohatta Palace was built as a summer home for a Rajasthan businessman in 1927. Over time it has been turned into an art gallery. While there is no specific legend for Mohatta palace, there are many stories that go around about it. Museum guards claim that they hear the sounds of huge parties in the palace’s rooms at night, making it one of the most haunted places in Karachi.

Wine glasses float in the air. Most creepily, entire exhibits are often rearranged each morning.

4. Shireen Cinema

Shireen Cinema is located in the North of Karachi and has been closed for the public for over a year now. The staff of the cinema reported many paranormal activities and creepy experiences. The backseats of the hall that were visibly empty would sound like someone is sitting and chatting. Shadows of people would be visible on screens even though the halls were empty. Legend has it many jinns reside in the cinema.

5. Hawks Bay – Haunted Hut

This particular hut in the area has never been rented out. Legend again has it that those who make the unfortunate decision to rent it out never make it through the night. Now, we don’t know whether this means that they leave during the night or that they don’t make it out alive. Regardless, please don’t do it for yourself!

It is also said that during the night on a full moon, weddings are held by Jinnat. They do not take kindly to uninvited guests. So, beware and don’t dare your friends to rent this hut at Hawk’s Bay.

Services Hospital Lahore Faces Chaos Due To Electricity Shutdown

An electricity outage in Services Hospital, Lahore’s operating rooms created havoc, posing grave challenges for patients and medical staff. In response, Punjab’s Interim Chief Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, swiftly constituted an investigation committee, chaired by the Health Secretary, to thoroughly examine the matter. The committee presented its comprehensive report during a meeting attended by key officials, including Provincial Minister Dr. Javed Akram and the Chief Secretary.

The report highlighted the failure of Services Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) Principal Prof. Dr. Farooq Afzal and Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr. Ehtesham to fulfill their duties, resulting in their subsequent removal from their positions.

A viral social media video exposed the plight of doctors in the ENT operating room, struggling to perform surgeries without electricity. The generators had exhausted diesel, leading to a complete halt in essential medical equipment and subjecting patients to sweltering heat and humidity.

Taking decisive action, CM Mohsin Naqvi suspended those accountable for the negligence. However, this incident has raised significant concerns about the hospital’s preparedness during power outages and the well-being of patients in such dire circumstances. Urgent measures must address these issues and ensure the safety and comfort of patients during unforeseen disruptions.

Indian Woman Finds Her Soulmate In KPK, Pakistan

An Indian woman traveled to Pakistan to marry a man from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa after their Facebook friendship turned into love, as confirmed by security sources on Sunday. Anju, a 35-year-old from Delhi, followed her heart and went to Pakistan a few days ago to see her 25-year-old lover, Nasrullah, from the beautiful region of Upper Dir. Now that is what people like to call unconditional and boundaryless love. Pun intended!

Their virtual bond grew into love, prompting her daring journey into Pakistan, an unexpected love story. However, they haven’t confirmed if they are married yet. Anju expressed her love for Nasrullah in a statement, revealing how their Facebook friendship had evolved into an inseparable love. Security sources are investigating their friendship.

The district police officer of Upper Dir, Mushtaq Khan, confirmed Anju’s arrival and mentioned that investigations were ongoing. She is currently under police custody, and security agencies are conducting inquiries.

Seema And Sachin 

Interestingly, there’s another similar online romance story between Seema Ghulam Haider, 27, and Sachin Meena, 22, who met through the popular online game PUBG. Seema fled to India with her four children to be with Sachin, leading to their arrest and 14-day jail remand. They expressed their desire to marry and live together. The police are conducting a detailed investigation into the case.

The love story gained attention in India when the couple landed in jail. Seema illegally entered India in May, along with her four young children, and they lived with Sachin in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, for more than a month, as reported by the police.  Both of them were arrested and received a 14-day jail remand before being released. The couple is determined to marry and be together. Currently, the police are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
