The Pakistani government, in collaboration with commercial banks, has agreed on a Rs268 billion debt restructuring plan for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). While this move aims to facilitate the airline’s privatization, it significantly shifts the financial burden onto taxpayers. The Ministry of Finance, reversing its earlier stance, now commits to making principal and interest payments from the national budget.

Terms of the Agreement

Under the agreement, the government plans to utilize PIA sale proceeds for principal payments, resorting to the national budget if the funds fall short. In return, banks accept a 10-year debt rollover with a hefty 12% annual interest rate. Leading to Rs32.2 billion in annual interest payments. This means banks stand to receive Rs322 billion in interest payments over the next decade, surpassing their outstanding stocks of Rs268 billion. The grand total at a 12% interest rate is projected to reach Rs572 billion in 10 years.

IMF and Board of Directors to Weigh In

To implement this significant financial shift, the Ministry of Finance is set to seek the endorsement of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Given the implications on the national budget. Concurrently, banks will present the plan to their respective board of directors for approval. The sudden change in the ministry’s stance leaves many wondering about the circumstances that prompted this shift.

While this debt restructuring alleviates the financial strain on PIA and streamlines its privatization process. Concerns linger about potential delays. The finance ministry’s decision to stop interest payments on PIA debt in March 2023 prompted a search for privatization options. The agreed-upon restructuring, with the finance ministry taking ownership of the debt. Addresses a major hurdle for the airline, removing a substantial monthly charge from its balance sheet.

Privatization Challenges Remain

Despite reaching an agreement on this critical issue, PIA is still far from privatization. With a total outstanding debt of Rs825 billion, the airline, along with the Privatization Ministry, needs no objection certificates from the Civil Aviation Authority and Federal Board of Revenue to proceed with filing a scheme of arrangement with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

While the government acceded to some demands, rejecting others put forth by the banks, the path to PIA’s privatization remains complicated. The banks’ requests for considering PIA debt as eligible for Capital Requirement Regulations (CRR) and deferring tax payments on their earnings were turned down. The uncertainty surrounding the privatization process persists, making it a challenging journey for all stakeholders involved.

A recent survey by StudyFinds reveals that a whopping 8 in 10 adults have flushed items down the toilet that really should have found their way to the trash. From hair to cigarette butts to cooking grease, it seems like our toilets are doubling as garbage cans. But the consequences of these seemingly harmless actions may be more significant than we realize.

What Goes Down the Drain?

The study, which included 2,000 adults, found some surprising culprits. About 21 percent of respondents admitted to disposing of hair in their toilets, while 27 percent of women confessed to flushing tampons. Animal waste, cigarette butts, makeup, medicine, and even solid objects down street drains made the list of bathroom misdemeanors. It’s not just about clogging pipes – over half of the participants (56%) were blissfully unaware of the environmental impact of their bathroom habits.

The survey coincides with the release of the documentary series “Whale with Steve Backshall” on Sky Nature. Poppy Dixon, the director of documentaries & factual at Sky UK, notes, “The study suggests why it’s so important for scientists and conservationists, such as Steve Backshall, to take audiences on a journey across the world’s oceans, to demonstrate how our actions and the life quality of our marine animals are more closely intertwined than we may think.”

The Environmental Impact

Surprisingly, 17 percent of those who admitted to dumping non-liquid items down the drain didn’t believe it was a problem, while 15 percent assumed that if it fits down the drain, it’s harmless. But here’s the kicker – 67 percent of respondents expressed a desire to do more to protect the world’s oceans and marine life, and two-thirds claimed to deeply care about ocean animals.

As the survey indicates, education and awareness are crucial. Over 60 percent wished they had known more about the impact of their actions on marine life years ago and admitted they would have changed their habits. This unconventional dish gained traction after influencers posted videos of themselves frying the green sticks, leading TikTok users to replicate the process by frying the toothpicks, observing them puff up, and then adding seasonings like powdered cheese before consumption.

In a CCTV video, toothpicks crafted from starch are depicted turning green after being dyed and then fried in hot oil with spices. The trend gained popularity in South Korea following its introduction on a live-streaming platform where creators consume large quantities of peculiar or unconventional foods.

Shaheen Afridi was under fire for his low pace during the Test series against Australia too. Former captain Waqar Younis suggested that Afridi should take time off to avoid transitioning into a medium-pacer.

However, during a press conference, Afridi himself refuted the claims of being slower and blamed speed guns in Australia for showing a slower pace.

Google Supports the Upcoming General Election 2024 in Pakistan

Karachi, February 1, 2024: Supporting elections is a critical part of Google’s responsibility to our users and the democratic process. As Pakistanis take to the polls to vote in the National election to elect representatives for the National Assembly and Provincial Assemblies on February 8th, we’re committed to working with government, industry, and civil society to connect voters with helpful and authoritative information, and keep our platforms safe from abuse.

Connecting voters with helpful information

We know that in the run-up to elections, people need useful and relevant information to help them navigate the electoral process. We make reliable information easily available with helpful product features, showing data from trusted, nonpartisan organisations on how and where to vote across our products:

Google Search: Our ranking systems are designed to elevate authoritative information and provide context to users on a variety of elections related information. In addition, the Google homepage will have links that direct voters to authoritative information on ‘how to vote’ and ‘how to register to vote’
YouTube: For news and information related to the election, our recommendation system prominently surfaces content and relevant context from authoritative sources, including local and national news sources on the homepage, in search results and the “Up Next” panel, to connect people to high-quality election news and information.
Google Trends: to help the media and public explore what voters care about this election, we’ve launched a Google Trends page, a tool that helps surface the top queries, topics, and interests in parties running in the elections. The page also includes data on the top election-related topics searched in each part of the country, such as the economy, taxes and wages, among others. This does not reflect voting intentions but it does provide unique insights into what people are searching for.
Google News Initiative: We ran a series of workshops to equip journalists with the right resources to inform their news coverage during elections, including teaching them about tools for news verification, digital security, and using Google Trends.

Farhan Qureshi, Google’s Country Director for Pakistan said “In the lead-up to the election, we have focused our efforts on supporting Pakistanis who are expected to cast their vote by helping them connect to useful and relevant election-related information online. We have also invested in the news ecosystem and trained journalists and newsrooms on reporting authoritative and credible news ahead of the election cycle. Recently, we launched a Google Trends Pakistan General Election page to make it easier for the media to find this data for their stories.”

Safeguarding our platforms from abuse

Protecting the integrity of elections also means keeping our products and services safe from abuse. Across Google and YouTube, we have long standing policies to keep our platforms safe, and that apply to everyone and for all types of content, including elections. Our YouTube Community Guidelines include policies against hate speech, harassment, incitement to violence, technically manipulated content, and certain types of election misinformation. We rely on a combination of machine learning and human reviewers to identify and remove content that violates our policies – between July and September 2023, we removed over 8.1 million videos and over 10 million channels globally for violating our Community Guidelines on YouTube.

Qureshi added, “Election integrity is a top priority for YouTube, and we’ve been working to ensure the right policies and systems are in place to support the country’s elections. On top of connecting people to authoritative and quality information, we remove violative content in a timely manner with the help of machine learning and trained reviewers. Our goal is to maintain the right balance between protecting our community from harm and enabling a diversity of viewpoints to thrive on YouTube.”

Is A 660cc Car Recommended For A Long Road Trip In Pakistan?

Going on a road trip in Pakistan, especially to the northern areas, can be quite a task to accomplish. It is not a trip that everyone can make and definitely not a trick that any car can make. Yes, when you go out on a road trip, it is always recommended that you take a car which can handle the terrain, weather and the load of people and luggage. In such a case, we would not recommend you to drive a 660cc car on a long road trip, or to the northern areas.

There are quite a few reasons as to why a 660cc car should not be taking terrain-heavy road trips. The purpose of the 660cc vehicle was fuel efficiency and it does that quite well, in the city or on the motorway. However, the fuel efficiency is present because of the appropriate engine size. However, that also means that the threshold for the engine can also be reached quicker over prolonged use.

Driving a 660cc in Pakistan

For Karachi’s stop-and-go traffic, a 660cc car is the perfect applicant. It consumes quite less fuel on idle and running both. However, due to the engine size, if the car is fully loaded with people and luggage, then the 660cc has to work quite hard to reach the same energy it was producing with lesser people. Thus, it is not recommended to take a 660cc car on a long road trip, especially to the northern areas.

You can take the car if you wish to, but it is going to be quite a lot of load on the engine for quite a long time. People have taken a Mehran on Pakistan tours but even that is not recommended. Most 660cc cars are made for city-driving and that is where they perform the best. For long road trips and Pakistan tours, the best engine capacity to have is at least 1.0 Liter or greater. A 1.0 Liter vehicle can handle load with better efficiency and still give good mileage over longer distances or hilly areas.

A Car Can Go Anywhere

Of course, if you want to take a smaller car loaded with people and luggage, you can. However, it will not only give you lack of power on many fronts, but the wear and tear on the engine with be a nuisance for the next person who decides to buy your car.

A lot of 660cc engine cars end up with seized or repaired engines in them due to overworking the engine itself. Thus, then the value goes down and the next buyer hesitates.

Shell Pakistan Conducts Free Eye Camps For Mechanics in Collaboration with LRBT

Karachi, Pakistan, February 1, 2024 – Shell Pakistan Limited (SPL) organized an eye camp for mechanics in partnership with Layton Rahmatulla Benevolent Trust (LRBT). The mechanics were provided free eye screening to ensure healthy eyesight.

As part of its community outreach program, SPL, in collaboration with LRBT, has been providing eye testing to community members.

The Chief Executive and Managing Director of Shell Pakistan Limited, Waqar Siddiqui, stated that: “We aim to be a good neighbour wherever we work, by contributing to the well-being of our communities. Shell’s social performance programmes enable us to share with communities the benefits that economic development brings while creating a sustainable business environment.”

A team of ophthalmologists and support staff from LRBT conducts these eye tests and dispenses medicine for eye ailments. If further treatment is required, patients are referred to the nearest LRBT hospital, where they receive additional free treatment.

SC Mandates Father’s Responsibility For Child’s Education

Education is one of the most important aspects of a person’s life. It is essential for a person to understand how the world works, and gain the necessary knowledge to function and move forward. It may not be something that everyone has but it is something that everyone is encouraged to get, no matter what stage of life. Not only does it help you think about the world more deeply, it helps you grasp a situation from more than one perspective.

It is also something that we believe is needed more and more in our country than ever. In regards to this, the Supreme Court has made a new ruling. The Supreme Court has ruled that fathers are accountable for their children’s maintenance as per Shariah and civil law. Justice Syed Hassan Azhar Rizvi emphasized the importance of quality education for children in a recent eight-page judgment.

Getting The Necessary Education

It may not be something that some people give importance to, but having an education provided for a child is something they will never regret. The supreme court ruling came after a case involving a woman, seeking maintenance for her six-month-old daughter after divorce, came forward. Initially, the family court ordered a maintenance amount of Rs.1,000/- per month, later increased to Rs.25,000/- in 2021.

The father contested the decision citing financial constraints due to his Rs.60,000 pension and family obligations. The Supreme Court affirmed that maintenance encompasses all essentials for living, including children’s education expenses, obliging the father to support his daughter’s education until her graduation and employment.

Education for All

Of course, we know that there are a lot of hard-working mothers and fathers present that already do support their children, no matter what. You will see them moving heaven and earth to make sure their children never face any adversity in life that they did. In an exciting move, an Art Competition has been organized to infuse innovation and thematic richness into the designs. The canvas is wide open for participants with themes ranging from social and cultural identities to demographic diversity, climate change, economic development, natural landscapes, architectural heritage, and national symbols. The SBP encourages artists to think outside the box, urging them to bring forth novel designs that encapsulate the essence of these diverse themes.

Submission Details

Artists can let their imaginations soar by submitting designs for all seven existing denominations or fewer based on their preference. The designs should be presented in hard copy on white paper accompanied by a concise write-up of no more than a hundred words in either English or Urdu, explaining the design and its thematic significance.

Adding a vibrant touch to the competition, the SBP emphasizes that the colors of each banknote denomination should be unique and easily distinguishable. This not only enhances visual appeal but also ensures clarity in identifying different denominations.

Jury’s Role and Lucrative Rewards

A panel of esteemed artists will form the jury, tasked with evaluating the submitted designs. The top six designs for each denomination will be recommended to the SBP for the final selection. The stakes are high, with hefty cash prizes awaiting the winners – Rs.1,000,000/-, Rs.500,000/-, and Rs.300,000/- for the first, second, and third designs of each denomination, respectively.

Imad Wasim shocked the cricketing world with his sudden retirement in November last year, however, his latest comments have hinted towards a potential comeback in the future.

In a candid conversation with a local news outlet, Imad reaffirmed his commitment to the retirement decision while leaving the door slightly ajar for a potential return if the need arises for Pakistan.
