The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to reinstate the central contract of Haris Rauf, acknowledging that their previous decision to terminate it was a mistake.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi admitted the error during a press conference in Lahore, attributing the decision to a misunderstanding and describing Rauf as a “star player for Pakistan”.

“I received a letter from Haris Rauf who made his case very nicely,” Naqvi said at a press conference in Lahore. “There was a misunderstanding, and an incorrect decision was taken. His contract has been restored.”

He further emphasized the importance of looking after Rauf, considering him a vital asset for the team, especially during his recovery from a dislocated shoulder sustained during the recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9.

“I was worried about him because he’s injured, and there were concerns about who would facilitate his treatment. We will now have insurance cover that because he’s our star player, and it’s important to take care of him.”

This reversal comes less than six weeks after Rauf’s contract was terminated due to his refusal to join Pakistan’s Test tour to Australia.

At the time, chief selector Wahab Riaz criticized Rauf, accusing him of harming Pakistan cricket and breaking his commitment. However, Rauf contested these claims.

The decision to terminate Rauf’s contract was announced just days before the start of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), causing controversy.

Mohammad Amir, Imad Wasim Among Players Called Up for Kakul Fitness Camp

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the inclusion of pace bowler Mohammad Amir and all-rounder Imad Wasim among the 29 players selected for the upcoming fitness camp in Kakul, Abbottabad.

Having recently withdrawn their retirements, Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir rejoined the squad, marking their return to the national setup ahead of the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand.

Additionally, Usman Khan, a standout performer in PSL 9, has also earned a spot in the camp. However, his selection for the series is subjective to his willingness to represent Pakistan, for which he needs to give up his eligibility for the UAE national team.

Scheduled to run from March 26 to April 8, the camp, conducted in collaboration with the Pakistan Army, aims to prepare players for upcoming series and tournaments.

Pakistan is scheduled to play the home T20I series against New Zealand, followed by away fixtures against Ireland and England. The European tour will be concluded shortly before the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies.

According to a PCB press release, the camp will focus on team building and enhancing players’ physical and mental strength to tackle future challenges effectively.

Shaheen Afridi has played a key role as captain in convincing Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim to reverse their retirements. However, his position is under threat as the T20I captain.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to make a pivotal decision regarding Shaheen Afridi’s future as captain following the national camp, scheduled to commence on March 26 at Kakul.

During a press conference after announcing the selection committee yesterday, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi refrained from divulging specifics about Shaheen’s captaincy prospects.

“Even I don’t know who the captain will be,” Naqvi disclosed. “Whether Shaheen continues or a new captain emerges will be determined after the fitness camp.”

Naqvi emphasized the importance of considering various technical factors in the decision-making process.

“We want a long-term solution, whether it’s Shaheen or a new leader. And then we intend to stick by that individual, instead of making hasty changes in captaincy based solely on match outcomes,” he added.

Shaheen Afridi assumed the role of T20I captain after Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ODI World Cup 2023 in India, replacing Babar Azam. The decision was made by the former committee led by Zaka Ashraf, who also appointed Shan Masood as Test captain.

Shaheen’s leadership credentials were bolstered by his success as captain of Lahore Qalandars, guiding the franchise to consecutive PSL titles.

However, his initial stint as captain in the five-match series against New Zealand fell short of expectations, with the Blackcaps securing a dominant 4-1 victory.

Meanwhile, his team Lahore Qalandars also had a dismal PSL 9 season, where they managed to win only one game.

Aaqib Javed Lashes Out at PCB Over Head Coach Selection Process

Former Pakistan pace bowler Aaqib Javed has raised significant concerns regarding the coaching standards within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and critiqued the hiring process for coaches.

In a recent interview with a local sports outlet, Aaqib highlighted what he perceives as a lack of professionalism in the recruitment of coaches by the PCB.

He emphasized the importance of qualifications and experience in coaching appointments, stressing that decisions should be made based on merit.

“It’s not about jealousy, it’s about mindset. If you look at the past 10-12 years, apart from Mickey Arthur, PCB has not hired any professional coach,” Aaqib said.

“In the entire world, when there is an advertisement for coaching, the first requirement is usually a Level 3 plus qualification, followed by 4-5 years of international experience,” he added.

“PCB hires a person first and then the advertisement comes according to that person. So when you don’t correct your advertisement, then anyone can apply, then what is the criteria?” he questioned.

The former pace bowler reiterated the necessity of creating merit-based systems for hiring, advocating for professionalism in the selection process. He emphasized that qualifications and experience should be fundamental criteria for coaching positions.

Aaqib Javed is associated with the PSL franchise Lahore Qalandars as their head coach, meanwhile he was recently appointed Sri Lanka’s bowling coach.

Lahore Qalandars, who won back-to-back PSL trophies, struggled to replicate their past successes in the recently concluded PSL 9.

Out of ten matches played, they suffered defeats in eight, secured a solitary victory, and had one match abandoned due to adverse weather conditions.
