Tension Rises At GC University Over Alleged Harassment

A female student at Government College (GC) University in Lahore allegedly assaulted a professor and the video has now went viral on social media. This footage showed the student throwing files and grabbing the assistant professor’s hair. The video, recorded by a bystander, depicted the student repeatedly hitting the professor with office supplies. While he attempted to protect himself from the attack.

Several other students joined her as she continued to hit the professor with a chair in what seems to be the staff room.

Soon after the video went viral, Dr. Ahmad Adnan, the Vice Chancellor of Government College University, established a committee to probe allegations of sexual harassment involving a faculty member and students.

Security personnel nearby intervened and escorted the teacher and students to the administration office.

According to University VC Dr. Adnan, he is treating the matter with utmost seriousness. Meanwhile, he has assigned Dr. Faiza, head of the GCU’s anti-harassment committee, to lead the investigation.

Former Pakistan captain Waqar Younis has offered some valuable suggestions to elevate the Pakistan Super League (PSL) to new heights.

The former fast bowler, who was part of the commentary panel during the PSL 9, addressed the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi on social media and requested to add more teams in the next season.

In a candid message shared on social media platform X, Waqar Younis stressed the importance of expanding the league’s reach by increasing the number of participating teams to at least eight by the 2025 edition.

“Six teams too less for such a big brand. PSL deserves at least 8 teams in 2025. We had 3 women’s matches last year, what happened this year? Urdu commentary must have their own channel and setup,” he posted.

He emphasized that the current roster of six teams might not fully harness the potential of a league as prestigious as the PSL.

Additionally, he raised concerns about the absence of women’s matches in this year’s tournament, highlighting the significance of promoting gender inclusivity in cricket.

However, implementing immediate changes may pose a challenge due to an agreement signed between the PCB and the franchises in 2021, which prohibits the addition of new teams until the completion of the tenth season in 2025.

Interestingly, Waqar’s sentiments resonate with those of Pakistan women’s cricket team star Bismah Maroof, who has been a vocal advocate for gender equality in cricket.

Maroof expressed disappointment over the absence of exhibition matches for women cricketers during PSL 9, emphasizing the importance of providing a platform for female players to showcase their talent.

“There are no exhibition matches for women cricketers in PSL 9, which is disappointing,” Bismah lamented. “It is crucial for women cricketers to have a league akin to the PSL. Last year, we had exhibition matches during the PSL, with foreign players participating. Although promised for this season, our exhibition matches did not materialize,” she added.

Traditionally, several segments of the community expect women to live as a weaker gender, obscuring them inside the house to perform domestic chores.

To combat a mindset that has held patriarchy in high regard, some of the leading multinational companies have taken it upon themselves to play their part in raising awareness about the rights of women.

One such company is YouTube. It has the power to transform lives and drive stronger equality, ultimately reshaping the narrative for women in Pakistan. These companies believe that no country can progress without unleashing the potential of its female workforce, ensuring gender-equality and providing them with the skills to add value in the social-mainstream. With this vision, the technological infrastructure must be enriched rapidly, with bigger programs to empower the common people.

YouTube has become a powerful tool for challenging negative societal norms, thus fostering a more inclusive environment for women to thrive creatively and professionally.

Pakistani women face big challenges in pursuing education due to socio-cultural issues, which is why the female-literacy rate in the country remains abysmally low at around 50%. The UN ranks Pakistan 135 out of 156 countries in ‘equality in educational attainment’. This emphasizes the need to support women with education and skill-development.

Yet, despite the hurdles, many women in Pakistan have shown great academic and professional performance. These success-stories must be promoted to inspire the youth. YouTube provides a powerful platform for them to express their wisdom and creativity and prove their mettle.

One such story is that of the iron lady’s – Iqra Kanwal – Pakistan’s one of the most viewed female creators on YouTube today. She shines like a beacon of hope for all young girls. Iqra found her voice through YouTube, using which she has been able to access a huge audience by digitally engaging millions of people.

Over the years, she has broken many stereotypes to become a symbol of female empowerment and success. Her story is a testimonial to YouTube’s positive impact on the lives of Pakistanis, including women.

Iqra, a doctor by profession, discovered her passion for creative expression and chose YouTube as her platform of choice. Through her daily vlogs featuring her four sisters and parents, she entertains and empowers her loyal audience. Safety and security concerns in Pakistan have also kept the ‘Female Labor-force Participation’ rate very low, currently hovering at around 22% only. The workplace environment and lack of job opportunities are also major barriers. However, with YouTube, Iqra has been able to perform and communicate in secured environments of her choosing to avoid all risks. Technology is enabling these women to contribute meaningfully to the workforce and achieve prosperity.

A gender Pay-Gap of around 34% also exists in Pakistan, highlighting the inequality faced by women. On its part, YouTube promises absolutely equal earning opportunities to qualified and competent content creators, including women.

In one of her messages, Iqra stated: “A Pakistani woman is no less than anyone. She’s an artist, and a skilled person in herself. I want to say to all the women watching my channel: never shy away from your dreams! You must design your own destinies, and show the world your talents through the internet and YouTube.”

Iqra’s words reflect her leadership skills, as she encourages the youth to use platforms like YouTube to realize their full potential. Her success is a catalyst for change in Pakistan, encouraging women to break free from societal constraints and pursue their passions.

It was in the month of Ramadan when Tabish’s family decided to visit Hira’s house for old times’ sake. She was just on her way out, dressed in her trendy clothes and her hair done, when her mother requested she greet them. Funnily enough at the time she insisted she was late and had to go. 

Clearly, mother knows best because the moment she walked in it was reported by Hira’s brother that Hashmi immediately nudged his mom to take notice. Tabish claims it was just an accident that his mum was asking him to behave and that’s all. But somehow, we have reasons to believe it was love at first site.

According to reports, the national selection committee is close to announcing a preliminary squad of around 25 players, from which the final roster for the forthcoming home five-match T20I series against New Zealand in April will be selected.

Imad Wasim finds himself omitted from the list of potential players due to his ongoing retirement status. Until he formally rescinds his retirement, selectors cannot consider him for national team selection.

Despite Imad’s stellar performances in the recently concluded PSL 9, where he earned the Player of the match award in the final for his exceptional five-wicket haul and pivotal batting contributions, his absence from the training camp remains inevitable.
