New Study Links Low Levels of Vitamin D to Lung Disease

Carried out by researchers at Johns Hopkins University, the study set out to look at which potentially treatable factors are associated with interstitial lung disease (ILD), a relatively rare group of disorders characterized by lung scarring and inflammation.

The disease may lead to progressive, disabling and irreversible lung damage, and once diagnosed most people do not live longer than five years.

Although many cases are caused by environmental toxins such as asbestos or coal dust, ILD can also be caused by autoimmune disorders, infections, medication side effects, and even from unknown causes.

To assess a possible link wth vitamin D, the new study looked at medical information from 6,302 adults with an average age of 62 over a 10-year period.

Blood samples were taken for each participant to measure vitamin D levels, with those with vitamin D levels of less than 20 nanograms per milliliter — which was about 30 percent of participants — considered to be vitamin D deficient.

Those with vitamin D levels of 20-30 nanograms per milliliter were considered to have an “intermediate” but not optimal level of vitamin D, while those with 30 nanograms per milliliter or more were considered to have met recommended levels.

Each participant was also given a heart CT scan so researchers could also assess the lungs at the initial visit, and ten years into the study 2,668 participants received full-lung CT scans to look for presence of scar tissue or other abnormalities.

The researchers found that the participants who were considered to be vitamin D-deficient had a larger volume of bright spots in the lung, which suggests damaged lung tissue, compared with those with adequate vitamin D levels.

These differences were still seen even after adjusting for influencing risk factors of lung disease such as current smoking status, physical inactivity or obesity.

The data from the full-lung scans also showed that those with deficient or intermediate vitamin D levels were 50 to 60 percent more likely to have abnormalities on their full lung scans, which suggests early signs of interstitial lung disease, compared with those with optimal vitamin D levels.

Again, these associations were still seen after the researchers had adjusted for other cardiovascular and inflammatory risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

The researchers caution that their results can’t prove a cause and effect, and further studies are now needed to see if treating vitamin D deficiency, for example with supplements or sunlight exposure, could potentially prevent or slow the progression of the currently untreatable and incurable disorder.

Vitamin D levels can be boosted by spending 15 minutes a day in sunlight or by including vitamin-D rich foods in the diet, such as fatty fish, eggs, fortified dairy products, calf’s liver, and portobello mushrooms.

The results can be found published online in the Journal of Nutrition.

Cabin Fever & Comedians: Life in the World Cup Bubble

As Facebook Ages, Teens Look Elsewhere to Connect

Manon, 17, has a Facebook account but to connect with her friends she turns to other social networks like Instagram or Snapchat.

“I don’t use it to post status updates or personal information,” the San Francisco teen says.

Manon maintains her Facebook account to be able to stay in touch with the large number of users on the huge social network and as a “gateway” to log into other apps.

“But to communicate with my friends, it’s Snapchat,” the high schooler said.

“Everyone says Facebook is out of date. I think it’s because all the parents are on Facebook.”

As Facebook has grown into a network of more than two billion people globally it has lost its luster for younger users who made up a core base.

While Facebook has become one of the world’s most valuable and powerful companies, it’s no longer seen as a cool destination for teens, who are turning to Snapchat and Instagram, which is owned by Facebook.

According to a Pew Research Center survey this year, 51 percent of US teens ages 13 to 17 use Facebook, compared with 72 percent for Instagram and 69 percent who are on Snapchat. The survey found 85 percent used the Google video sharing service YouTube.

The landscape has shifted since a 2014-15 Pew survey which found Facebook leading other social networks with 71 percent of the teen segment.

“The social media environment among teens is quite different from what it was just three years ago,” said Pew researcher Monica Anderson.

“Back then, teens’ social media use mostly revolved around Facebook. Today, their habits revolve less around a single platform.”

The breakup of teens and Facebook was occurring before the latest scandals which have hit Facebook over hijacked user data and propagation of misinformation.

According to a Forrester Research survey 34 percent of US online youth view Facebook “as a website for old people and parents.”

“US online youth regard Facebook as utility, while other networks that deliver niche value steal attention from Facebook’s broad platform,” said Forrester’s Anjali Lai in a research note.

“Established social networks face an image problem.”

A separate report by the research firm eMarketer came to a similar conclusion, estimating that Facebook would lose some two million US users under age 24 this year.

– Still king globally –

Facebook remains king of the social media space and is still growing, though more slowly than in past years.

Its profit in the first quarter of 2018 jumped 63 percent from a year ago to $5 billion, and total revenues increased 49 percent to $11.97 billion.

And the California company has been moving to become more diversified, with its “family” of apps that include Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, and virtual reality gear from its Oculus division.

To connect with younger audiences, Facebook has launched a parentally controlled Messenger Kids app for those too young to have their own Facebook account, and recently expanded that to Peru and Canada.

Facebook is also moving to challenge YouTube, and potentially other services like Netflix, with original video on its own platform and on Instagram, which now has one billion users.

With 2.2 billion users, Facebook still has a big lead over Snapchat, with 191 million users at the end of March, and Twitter with 336 million.

“Snapchat has a lot of growing to do before it can really be a huge challenger to Facebook,” said Debra Williamson, social media analyst at eMarketer.

But the trends show services like Instagram and Snapchat — which has grown beyond its original offering of disappearing messages — have become the new, cool place for young smartphone users.

With Snapchat, “you can add animation, special effects, that’s what’s interesting for my generation,” said 16-year-old Charlotte, another San Francisco high school student.

Manon said she also likes Instagram because it is “more about creativity, people who make music or photography can post what they do.”

PIA’s Female Pilots Ridiculously Trolled for Flying to Gilgit!

In the 21st century where the world has advanced in phenomenal ways, there are still some who consider women to be the weaker gender.

Unfortunately, we saw a similar mindset after a picture of two Pakistan International Airline (PIA) female pilots went viral.

The national carrier took it to Twitter to praise their brave Captain, Maryam Masood and First Officer, Shumaila Mazhar, for a successful flight to Gilgit from Islamabad, the post read;

The flight to Gilgit is very challenging and requires a lot of precision and technique. Our dynamic duo, Captain Maryam Masood and First Officer Shumaila Mazhar make it look so easy as they fly through the mountains celebrating the beauty of our northern areas! Way to go!!

The original photo has been shared over 800 times on social media!

While the girls were applauded and praised for their achievement by many all across social media…

There were those who mocked and made fun of the ladies!

Girls have always proven, and are always proving that it does not matter what your gender you may be, as long as you are passionate, strong-willed and determined to make your dreams come true, it will happen!

We have reached out to both Maryam and Shumaila to share their flight experience.

Askari Amusement Park Launches “Man-Day” for Karachiites

Askari Amusement Park has been making headlines ever since plans for the park were announced.

With its grand opening on Eid-ul-Fitr, the new addition to the city has marked its place as one of the leading hang-out for family and friends.

With a number of heart-stopping and thrilling rides, it caters to pretty much every age group.

Upcoming Public Holiday on 25th July Across Pakistan!

But with most of these recreational places in Karachi having the “family only ” stipulation, it prevents most male Karachiites from being able to go with just their friends.

However, Askari Amusement Park has decided to break away from such stereotypes and dedicate ‘Monday’ as the “Man-Day” at the amusement park.

Posting about it on their social media, the management at the amusement park shared their new marketing strategy.

This means that all the guys in town will be able to go to the park without having to worry about being stopped by the guards for coming alone.

Seems like Askari has won the hearts of all males in the metropolis.

Karachi men just couldn’t control their excitement!

Some females were obviously trolled on the post!

Although a nice initiative, the world of social media is full of savage internet warriors!

Some K-town boys protested against Monday being the Man-day!

Now women are demanding that there should be a day devoted to them as well!

And it will actually be a super LIT idea!

Despite the mixed reactions, we must say that this is definitely a good idea!

Mehwish Hayat has won the hearts of millions of Pakistanis with her stellar acting skills and larger than life screen presence!

The diva has starred in a number of massive projects over the last couple of years, including award-winning movies Jawani Phir Nai Ani and Punjab Nahi Jaungi.

I was honoured to be awarded the Pakistan Icon Plaque in recognition of my film work over the past few years. I have always said that I do not judge my success by awards, but this one was different because it was international recognition for everything that we have achieved in our industry. To share the platform with members of our fraternity from across the border and to be considered on equal standing with them was very rewarding. It was acknowledgement of how far we have come in such a short time. We no longer have to live in anybody's shadow. We are all very naive if we think that films and artists can overcome 70 years of history and deep politics. True collaboration is much more than casting actors from across the border in each others films. But it seems like her latest project will be the most ground-breaking of all!

Mehwish has just given a major hint that she will be donning the role of the slain PPP leader, Benazir Bhutto and we just can’t control our excitement over this BIG news.

Revealing the news on social media, the pretty ‘Actor In law’ star shared the huge announcement with her fans.

"We have broken glass ceilings, we have broken the stereotypes, and we have been and continue to be prepared to go the extra mile, to be judged by unrealistic standards, to be held more accountable." Today would have been Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto's 65th birthday. It is an ideal time to reflect on her undoubted achievements. I have never really been a political person but leaving that aside there is no denying the great strides she made for women's empowerment and equality in our country – everything we are still fighting for even today. There was a time when she made women believe that almost anything was possible – she gave us hope and inspired us to reach for the stars. I am privileged to have been given the opportunity to research and learn more about her life and sitting here I can only reflect on so much more that could have been had she not lost her life so tragically. The sign of a true leader is the legacy they leave behind and the reverence with which the people remember her irrespective of party allegiances. She was a truly remarkable woman and I look forward to giving life to her story soon. ☑️ #MH #MehwishHayat #lostinreality

She expressed how much Bhutto had left an impact on not just her life but of millions of others and her struggle for women empowerment:

“Today would have been Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s 65th birthday. It is an ideal time to reflect on her undoubted achievements. I have never really been a political person but leaving that aside there is no denying the great strides she made for women’s empowerment and equality in our country”

The ‘Dillagi’ actress shared her excitement on being able to portray such a strong personality on screen.

Snapchat’s Latest Update Will Raise Your Bitmoji Game

Snap Map appears set to get two new features that will better illustrate a user’s day by creating Bitmoji effects that show their physical environment.

This time last year Snapchat introduced its Snap Map, putting Bitmojis in a user’s last seen location onto a map. Since then, a user’s Bitmoji world has received a few fun and addictive features, such as ‘Explore’ for getting updates on where friends are traveling to and ‘Actionmoji,’ which predict a user’s activity so the Bitmoji can do the same. Near an airport? Your lookalike avatar is flying a plane on Snap Map.

Now, according to a report from Mashable, there are two new features in the works that will bring a Bitmoji’s world even more to life — Weather and World Effects.

Weather Effects bring clouds, rain, and sunshine to a user’s Bitmoji, as well as their friends. Zoom in on someone’s Bitmoji to see what kind of day they are having, whether sunny or snowy.

As for World Effects, this feature will bring various themed animations to users on special occasions or mark significant events, such as confetti on a birthday or hearts on Valentine’s Day.

For anyone who hasn’t yet discovered their Bitmoji’s world, it may be because it’s like a hidden secret within the app. To enter, the Snapchatter has to open the camera mode and using two fingers, zoom out, opening up a bird’s eye view of the location and the first Bitmoji, the “Me”. The more you zoom out, the greater the scope, revealing Bitmojis of your friends in other countries.

Heat patches on the map show where a lot of snaps are being taken, potentially revealing real-time happenings from the perspective of people on the scene. These could include everything from a big sporting event, concert, to a natural disaster or accident.

These features require location sharing to be on, which isn’t the preference of everyone; for those who don’t want to share, there’s a “Ghost Mode” that can be set to on, off or timer. Furthermore, there is “select friends” for a controlled version of who sees where the user is. It should be noted that Snap Maps doesn’t use background location.

Although no specific date has been given for the roll-out of Weather and World Effects according to a report in The Verge they are “coming soon.”

FIFA World Cup 2018: Messi’s Argentina Staring at World Cup Exit after Croatia Humbling

Lionel Messi’s Argentina were on the brink of a humiliating World Cup exit on Thursday after they were humbled 3-0 by Croatia on a dramatic day at the World Cup that saw the European side join France in the knockout rounds.

Argentina knew they had to chase a win in Nizhny Novgorod after their disappointing 1-1 opening draw against Iceland but instead collapsed in the second half to leave their campaign in tatters.

A horrendous mistake by goalkeeper Willy Caballero and two further goals from Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic mean the two-time former champions have to rely on an unlikely sequence of results if they are to progress in Russia.

It was the heaviest defeat for the two-time world champions in the first round group stages of a World Cup tournament since they lost 6-1 to Czechoslovakia in 1958.

The result spelt another night of misery for Barcelona star Messi, who missed a penalty in Argentina’s opening match against Iceland.

In stark contrast, his eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who last month won his fifth Champions League winner’s medal, has already scored four goals in Russia and looks a shoo-in to win his sixth world player of the year award.

Croatia sit at the top of Group D with six points. Iceland have one point, the same as Argentina, and Nigeria have no points, but both teams have a game in hand on the South Americans.

“I had to devise a plan for this match. If I had set things up differently, things might have turned out much better. I don’t think it’s realistic to put the burden on Caballero (for his mistake),” said Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli.

“I think because of the reality of the Argentinian squad, it clouds Leo’s brilliance. Leo is limited because the team doesn’t gel ideally with him as it should. As coaches we need to realise these things and try to deal with them and I’m the one that needs to accept it.”

Yet Sampaoli’s remarks, implying that Messi’s team-mates were to blame, drew a blunt response from normally affable striker Sergio Aguero, hinting at tensions in the Argentine camp.

“Let him say what he wants,” Aguero said, when asked to comment on Sampaoli’s verdict.

It is the first time that Croatia have progressed past the World Cup group stages since their third-placed debut in 1998.

“From day one I’ve trusted my team. I didn’t believe we would be through after the second game, but I believed we would be through eventually,” said Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic.

“Argentina weren’t confused, we were excellent.”

But a fierce post-mortem was already under way in Argentina, where the press tore into Messi and his team.

“Catastrophe against Croatia, Argentina disappoints and is on the way out of the World Cup,” the Clarin newspaper wrote on its website.

– France qualify –

France, who won the tournament on home in 1998, earlier joined Russia and Uruguay in the last 16 with a 1-0 win against Peru, who cannot now progress from the group stage after two defeats.

Paris Saint-German star Kylian Mbappe tapped into an empty net in the 34th minute in Yekaterinburg and the South Americans were unable to respond.

Mbappe is now the youngest French goalscorer at a World Cup, aged 19 years and 183 days, beating David Trezeguet’s record of 20 years and 246 days.

Denmark, also in France’s Group C, stayed on course for the knockout rounds after drawing 1-1 with Australia in the early game of the day in Samara.

Christian Eriksen’s half-volley was cancelled out by Mile Jedinak’s VAR-assisted penalty after Yussuf Poulsen’s handball, giving Denmark four points, while Australia are stuck on one point.

Australia coach Bert van Marwijk said the “last piece of the puzzle” — goals — was missing for his side who had several chances to win the game, leaving their survival in the balance.

“We had chances to win and we deserved to win, so I’m disappointed,” the Dutchman said.

Russia have defied pre-tournament predictions that they would struggle by qualifying for the knockout round for the first time since the Soviet era. They will be joined by Uruguay, condemning Mohamed Salah’s Egypt and Saudi Arabia to an early exit from Group A.

Morocco will also be leaving Russia after the first round following their defeat by European champions Portugal, who are level with Spain on four points at the top of Group B.

(All the matches are played between the respective teams of the allotted groups only, i.e., Group A teams do not compete against teams of Group B. Two Semi Final Matches are played and a match for the third and fourth place).

Scoring System

Boxing like other Combat Sports is an individual (Boxer) based sport.

However, Boxing in a team format is going to be introduced in the Super Boxing League where there will be Six Boxers in a team and the way a Boxer wins the bout gets his team a score under Point Scoring System.

The team with maximum score wins. This concept is going to grow the fan following of the Boxing Team instead of an Individual and as a result, will help in capturing the market.

Huawei Launches Second Annual NEXT-IMAGE Awards

Building on the huge success of last year’s global smartphone photography awards, Huawei, one of the world’s biggest smartphone brands, has launched the second annual NEXT-IMAGE Awards, with the support of the International Center of Photography (ICP), the world’s leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. Visual creatives from around the world, including Huawei Experience Ambassadors and Huawei smartphone users from Pakistan, are invited to submit their entries and compete to become NEXT-IMAGE finalists.

The NEXT-IMAGE Awards are an important part of Huawei’s overarching NEXT-IMAGE Plan to redefine visual expression and culture through more professional and intuitive smartphone cameras. Having started in 2017, the awards provide Huawei smartphone users from around the world with a gallery where they can showcase their best work to a global audience. Last year there were over 157,000 submissions to the awards from over 90 different countries, with 500 finalists chosen.

Announcing the launch of the NEXT-IMAGE Awards during his keynote speech at CES ASIA, Kevin Ho, President of Huawei’s Handsets Product Line said: “The annual NEXT-IMAGE Awards are designed to inspire smartphone users to capture and share moments in life and experience the joy of photography. With HUAWEI leading the way in advancing image taking and redefining the meaning of the visual expression, the awards are also our commitment to exploring alongside Huawei mobile users, the possibilities of next-generation smartphone photography and videography.”

“I am thrilled to once again collaborate with Huawei on the second incarnation of the NEXT-IMAGE awards,” says ICP Executive Director Mark Lubell. “The images that emerged from this program were powerful and provocative. We’re excited to continue this program as a way to engage image makers around the world while celebrating the power of mobile photography to spark conversation and increase visual literacy across generations.”

The 2018 NEXT-IMAGE Awards are broken down into six categories: ‘Good Night’, ‘Faces’, ‘Hello, Life!’, ‘Check-In’, ‘Timeline’ and ‘Story Board’. After being whittled down to 500 finalists, remaining entries will be judged by a panel composed of five industry experts including ICP’s Mark Lubell, along with five up-and-coming young visual storytellers — many of whom are recent graduates of the ICP School— as mobile photography cannot just be defined by experts, but also by a young generation who use their phones on a daily basis to take pictures to share on social media. There will be one Grand Prize winner who will win US$20,000, a HUAWEI P20 Pro smartphone and a HUAWEI MateBook X Pro laptop. Additionally, there will be six best-in-category winners and 50 runner-up prizes.

To build on the momentum surrounding the NEXT-IMAGE Awards, Huawei will also be holding a series of events focused on the company’s vision to expand on visual expression. These include workshops with notable photography experts, called NEXT-IMAGE College, a global exhibition in leading cities, as well as photography Master Class with world-renowned photographers including Alec Soth, Magnum Photos photographer, towards the end of 2018. Through NEXT-IMAGE, all Huawei smartphone users will rediscover the joy of creating and sharing visual content.

The call for entries has already begun with winners being announced in late September, 2018. For more details, photography enthusiasts from Pakistan can visit the official awards website: http://gallery.consumer.huawei.com
